Abstract:With a chemically consistent evolutionary synthesis approach we follow the enrichment of individual chemical elements in the ISM. We describe the time With a chemically consistent evolutionary synthesis approach we follow the enrichment of individual chemical elements in the ISM. We describe the time evolution of broad band colors U to K and metal indices (Fe5335, Fe5270, Mg2, Mgb), taking into account the increasing initial metallicities of successive generations of stars. Using specific star formation prescriptions for the different spectral types of galaxies, we show our model galaxy broad band colors, synthetic spectra, and ISM abundances are in agreement with observations of nearby samples and template galaxies of the respective spectral types. We compare our synthetic Mg2 indices with observations and study the time evolution of the stellar index [MgFe] for composite elliptical galaxy models and for simple stellar populations of various metallicities. We show how the luminosity weighted stellar metallicity indicators in different wavelength bands from U to K compare to each other for the various star formation histories and how they evolve in time. We analyse as a function of wavelength the luminosity contributions of stellar subpopulations with different metallicities in the various galaxy types. The relations between luminosity weighted stellar metallicity indicators in different passbands, stellar absorption indices and ISM abundances are shown to depend significantly on the star formation history and evolutionary stage.

Black holes without Cauchy horizons and integrable singularities

Abstract:In general relativity, nonsingular black holes contain (at least) a Cauchy horizon, a null hypersurface beyond which determinism breaks down. Even though the strong cosmic censorship conjecture establishes the impossibility of extending spacetime beyond this region, in this paper we investigate how far we can go, without invoking this conjecture, in the building of a physically reasonable black hole without a Cauchy hypersurface. Following this reasoning, we find a black hole lacking of Cauchy horizon, asymptotically flat and satisfying either the strong or dominant energy condition. The above is possible by demanding integrable singularity for the Ricci scalar, whose direct consequence is the appearance of finite tidal forces. We show that the spacetime inside the event horizon represents a warped anti-de Sitter spacetime, which might be interpreted in terms of a finite superposition of configurations.

Black Hole Horizons and their Mechanics

Abstract:Black holes are often characterized by event horizons, following the literature that laid the mathematical foundations of the subject in the 1970s. However black hole event horizons have two fundamental conceptual limitations. First, they are defined only in space-times that admit a future conformal boundary. Second, they are teleological; their formation and growth is not determined by local physics but depends on what could happen in the distant future. Therefore, event horizons have not played much of a role in the recent theoretical advances that were sparked by discoveries of the LIGO-virgo collaborations. This article focuses on quasi-local horizons that have been used instead. Laws governing them -- mechanics of quasi-local horizons -- generalize those that were first found using event horizons. These results, obtained over the last two decades or so, have provided much insight into dynamical predictions of general relativity in the fully nonlinear regime. The article summarizes the deep and multi-faceted interplay between geometry and physics that has emerged. Conceptually, quasi-local horizons also play a key role in the discussion of the quantum evaporation of black holes. However, due to space limitations, this application is only briefly discussed in Section 6.

Abstract:These are the lecture notes for an introductory course on black holes and some aspects of their interaction with the classical and quantum world. The focus is on phenomena of "fundamental physics" in the immediate surroundings of the black hole (classical and quantum fields, with little astrophysics). We aim more at qualitative, intuitive understanding than at quantitative rigor or detail. Accordingly, we only assume previous exposure to a conventional introduction to the elements of General Relativity and a glancing acquaintance with the Schwarzschild solution, but not more. We use many figures for illustrations and provide a set of carefully guided exercises. Topics: (1) The black hole as a tale of light and darkness. (2) The black hole that vibrates. Abstract:We summarize our work on spherically symmetric midi-superspaces in loop quantum gravity. Our approach is based on using inhomogeneous slicings that may penetrate the horizon in case there is one and on a redefinition of the constraints so the Hamiltonian has an Abelian algebra with itself. We discuss basic and improved quantizations as is done in loop quantum cosmology. We discuss the use of parameterized Dirac observables to define operators associated with kinematical variables in the physical space of states, as a first step to introduce an operator associated with the space-time metric. We analyze the elimination of singularities and how they are replaced by extensions of the space-times. We discuss the charged case and potential observational consequences in quasinormal modes. We also analyze the covariance of the approach. Finally, we comment on other recent approaches of quantum black holes, including mini-superspaces motivated by loop quantum gravity.

Abstract:The main focus of this session was the presentation of new higher-dimensional black hole solutions, including black rings, black strings, and multi black holes, and the study of their properties. Besides new asymptotically flat and locally asymptotically flat black objects also new black holes with anti-de Sitter asymptotics were reported. The studies of their properties included the investigation of their stability, their thermodynamics, their analyticity and their existence. Furthermore, the geodesics in such higher-dimensional space-times were investigated.

Abstract:We present a discussion of the periodicity in imaginary time of maximally extended black hole spacetimes without reference to Euclidean manifolds. As motivation, we first demonstrate our approach for the Rindler geometry in flat space before then applying it for the case of Schwarzschild time in the maximally extended Kruskal geometry. One notable advantage of our approach is that it can be utilized in the Kerr case, again without reference to a Euclidean manifold, and without complexifying the angular momentum parameter, $a$. One unusual feature of our application in the Kerr case is that, even for the purely Lorentzian geometry, it is developed in terms of explicitly complex coordinates which are associated with distinct families of $\alpha-$surfaces. Moreover, coordinatization of these gives a single set of coordinates which cover the entire geometry outside the inner horizon.

Abstract:In the paper, only Static Spherically Symmetric space-times in four dimensions are considered within modified gravity models. The non-singular static metrics, including black holes not admitting a de Sitter core in the center and traversable wormholes, are reconsidered within a class of higher-order $F(R)$, satisfying the constraints $F(0)=\frac{dF}{dR}(0)=0$. Furthermore, by making use of the so-called effective field theory formulation of gravity, the quantum corrections to Einstein-Hilbert's action due to higher-derivative terms related to curvature invariants are investigated. In particular, in the case of Einstein-Hilbert action plus cubic curvature Goroff-Sagnotti contribution, the second-order correction in the Goroff-Sagnotti coupling constant is computed. In general, it is shown that the effective metrics, namely Schwarzschild expression plus small quantum corrections, are related to black holes and not to traversable wormholes. In this framework, within the approximation considered, the resolution of singularity for $r=0$ is not accomplished. The related properties of these solutions are investigated.

Abstract:We study the metric corresponding to a three-dimensional coset space $SO(4)/SO(3)$ in the lattice setting. With the use of three integers $n_1, n_2$, and $n_3$, and a length scale, $l_{\mu}$, the continuous metric is transformed into a discrete space. The numerical outcomes are compared with the continuous ones. The singularity of the black hole is explored and different domains are studied.

Abstract:We use hyperbolic tensor networks to construct a holographic map for black hole interiors that adds a notion of locality to the non-isometric codes proposed by Akers, Engelhardt, Harlow, Penington, and Vardhan. We use tools provided by these networks to study the relationship between non-isometries and quantum extremal surfaces behind the horizon. Furthermore, we introduce a limited notion of dynamics for these interior tensor networks based on the qudit models introduced by Akers et al., and study the evolution of quantum extremal surfaces in an evaporating black hole. We also find a tensor network description of a wormhole connecting the black hole interior to the radiation, providing a mechanism for interior states and operators to be encoded in the radiation after the Page time. As a particular case, we construct a tensor network realization of the backwards-forwards maps recently proposed to incorporate non-trivial effective dynamics in dynamical constructions of these non-isometric black hole codes.

Abstract:We provide a new exact solution of the Einstein equations which generalizes the noncommutative geometry inspired Schwarzschild metric, we previously obtained. We consider here more general relations between the energy density and the radial pressure and find new a geometry describing a regular ``dirty black hole''. We discuss strong and weak energy condition violations and various aspects of the regular dirty black hole thermodynamics.

Abstract:In the realm of lower-dimensional accelerating spacetimes, it is well-established that the presence of domain walls, which are co-dimension one topological defects, is a necessary condition for their construction. We expand the geometric framework by adding a conformally coupled scalar field. This endeavor leads to the identification of several new families of three-dimensional accelerating spacetimes with asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter (AdS) behavior. Notably, one of these solutions showcases a hairy generalization of the accelerating BTZ black hole. This solution is constructed at both slow and rapid phases of acceleration, and its connection with established vacuum spacetime models is explicitly elucidated. The inclusion of the scalar field imparts a non-constant Ricci curvature to the domain wall, thereby rendering these configurations particularly suitable for the construction of two-dimensional quantum black holes. To establish a well-posed variational principle in the presence of the domain wall, two essential steps are undertaken. First, we extend the conventional renormalized AdS$_3$ action to accommodate the presence of the scalar field. Second, to establish a well-posed variational principle, we extend the renormalized AdS$_3$ action to include the scalar field and incorporate the Gibbons--Hawking--York term for internal boundaries and domain wall tension. We engage in holographic computations, thereby determining the explicit form of the holographic stress tensor. In this context, the stress tensor can be expressed as that of a perfect fluid situated on a curved background. Additionally, it paves the road to ascertain the spacetime mass. Finally, we close by demonstrating the existence of three-dimensional accelerating spacetimes with asymptotically locally flat and asymptotically locally de Sitter geometries, particularly those embodying black holes.

Abstract:Gravitational entropy arises in string theory via coarse graining over an underlying space of microstates. In this review we would like to address the question of how the classical black hole geometry itself arises as an effective or approximate description of a pure state, in a closed string theory, which semiclassical observers are unable to distinguish from the "naive" geometry. In cases with enough supersymmetry it has been possible to explicitly construct these microstates in spacetime, and understand how coarse-graining of non-singular, horizon-free objects can lead to an effective description as an extremal black hole. We discuss how these results arise for examples in Type II string theory on AdS_5 x S^5 and on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 that preserve 16 and 8 supercharges respectively. For such a picture of black holes as effective geometries to extend to cases with finite horizon area the scale of quantum effects in gravity would have to extend well beyond the vicinity of the singularities in the effective theory. By studying examples in M-theory on AdS_3 x S^2 x CY that preserve 4 supersymmetries we show how this can happen.

Abstract:In these notes we discuss various methods relevant to the numerical construction of stationary black hole solutions in General Relativity with negative cosmological constant. We focus on solutions which explicitly break translational invariance along the boundary directions. Within the framework of the gauge/gravity duality, these can be interpreted as lattices. They have finite conductivity and thus help us move one step forward towards more realistic scenarios in holography.
