Abstract:This paper deals with superminimal surfaces in complex space forms by using theFrenet framing. We formulate explicitly the length squares of the higher fundamental forms andthe higher curvatures for superminimal surfaces in terms of the metric of the surface and the Khlerangle of the immersion. Particularly, some curvature pinching theorems for minimal 2-spheres in acomplex projective space are given and a new characterization of the Veronese sequence is obtained.

On such a manifold, the Kähler-Ricci flow has long-time solutions and its convergence and singular behaviors have been widely studied by various authors. In this talk, the speaker will discuss his works on this topic, in particular showing that the set of fibers (either singular or regular) on which the Riemann curvature blow up along the flow is an invariant set independent of the choice of initial Kähler metric. The talk is based on two joint works, one with Zhou Zhang, another with Yashan Zhang. The research conducted is partially supported by Hong Kong RGC Grants #26301316 and #16300018. Abstract:Minimal submanifolds are critical points of the volume functional. It plays an important role in the geometry of submanifolds and has been widely and deeply studied. In this paper, we survey the stability and the index of minimal submanifolds in several special ambient spaces. In the first part, we mainly summarize known results on the existence and the classification of closed stable submanifolds of arbitrary codimension in compact rank one symmetric spaces and product manifolds. In the second part, we exhibit results on minimal hypersurfaces with lower index in a sphere, a projective space and the product manifold of two spheres, including a new result of the author.

Abstract:Let N be a three dimensional Riemannian manifold. Let E be a closed embedded surface in N. Then it is a question of basic interest to see whether one can deform : in its isotopy class to some canonical embedded surface. From the point of view of geometry, a natural canonical surface will be the extremal surface of some functional defined on the space of embedded surfaces. The simplest functional is the area functional. The extremal surface of the area functional is called the minimal surface. Such minimal surfaces were used extensively by Meeks-Yau [MY21 in studying group actions on three dimensional manifolds. In [MY2], the theory of minimal surfaces was used to simplify and strengthen the classical Dehn's lemma, loop theorem and the sphere theorem. In the setting there, one minimizes area among all immersed surfaces and proves that the extremal object is embedded. In this paper, we minimize area among all embedded surfaces isotopic to a fixed embedded surface. In the category of these surfaces, we prove a general existence theorem (Theorem 1). A particular consequence of this theorem is that for irreducible manifolds an embedded incompressible surface is isotopic to an embedded incompressible surface with minimal area. We also prove that there exists an embedded sphere of least area enclosing a fake cell, provided the complementary volume is not a standard ball, and provided there exists no embedded one-sided RP2. By making use of the last result, and a cutting and pasting argument, we are able to settle a well-known problem in the theory of three dimensional manifolds. We prove that the covering space of any irreducible orientable three dimensional manifold is irreducible. It is possible to exploit our existence theorem to study

Abstract:In this paper, I will mention some applications of minimal surfaces to the geometry and topology of three-manifolds that I discussed in my lecture at the Current Developments in Mathematics Conference for 2004. The rst important application of minimal surfaces to the geometry of three-manifolds was given by Schoen and Yau [22] in their study of Riemannian three-manifolds of positive scalar curvature and their related proof of the positive mass conjecture in general relativity. The techniques that they developed in their proof of this conjecture continue to be useful in studying relationships between stable minimal surfaces and the topology of Riemannian manifolds. Around 1978, Meeks and Yau gave geometric versions of three classical theorems in three-dimensional topology. These classical theorems concern the existence of certain embedded surfaces. In the geometric versions of these theorems, Meeks and Yau proved the existence of essentially cononical solutions, which are given by area minimizing surfaces. They referred to these theorems as the Geometric Dehn’s Lemma, Geometric Loop Theorem and the Geometric Sphere Theorem. As an application of these special geometric minimal surface solutions to these classical topological theorems, Meeks and Yau gave new equivariant versions of these theorems in the presence of a dieren tial nite group action. Their Equivariant Loop Theorem turned out to be the nal missing step in the solution of the Smith Conjecture concerning the standardness of the smooth action of nite cyclic groups on the three-sphere S 3 . Abstract:The chapter discusses the equivariant loop theorem for three-dimensional manifolds that is needed in settling the Smith conjecture and reviews the existence theorems for minimal surfaces. The equivariant version of the loop theorem says that there are a finite number of properly embedded disks in M that satisfy the required properties. The loop theorem respects the action of the group G in a suitable manner. The chapter puts a metric on M so that the group G acts isometrically and so that ∂M is convex with respect to the outward normal. Then with respect to this metric, the existence of an immersed disk D1 is demonstrated, in M whose boundary ∂ D1, represents a nontrivial element in π1(S) and whose area is minimal among all such disks. The chapter describes Morrey's solution for the plateau problem in a general Riemannian manifold. The existence theorem for manifolds with boundary proves that M is homogeneously regular if M is a subdomain of another homogeneously regular manifold N that has no boundary.

Abstract:In 1982, Hamilton [41] introduced the Ricci flow to study compact three-manifolds with positive Ricci curvature. Through decades of works of many mathematicians, the Ricci flow has been widely used to study the topology, geometry and complex structure of manifolds. In particular, Hamilton’s fundamental works (cf. [12]) in the past two decades and the recent breakthroughs of Perelman [80, 81, 82] have made the Ricci flow one of the most intricate and powerful tools in geometric analysis, and led to the resolutions of the famous Poincare conjecture and Thurston’s geometrization conjecture in three-dimensional topology. In this survey, we will review the recent developments on the Ricci flow and give an outline of the Hamilton-Perelman proof of the Poincare conjecture, as well as that of a proof of Thurston’s geometrization conjecture.

Abstract:There is an obstruction to the existence of Kähler -Einstein metrics which is used to define the GIT weight for K-stability, and it has been extended to various geometric problems. This survey paper considers such extended obstructions to the existence problem of Kähler -Ricci solitons, Sasaki-Einstein metrics and (conformally) Einstein-Maxwell Kähler metrics. These three cases have a common feature that the obstructions are parametrized by a space of vector fields. We see, in these three cases, the obstructions are obtained as the derivative of suitable volume functionals. This tells us for which vector fields we should try to solve the existence problems.

Abstract:We address the question that if π 1 -surjective maps between closed aspherical 3-manifoldshave the same rank on π 1 they must be of non-zero degree. The positive answer is proved for Seifertmanifolds, which is used in constructing the first known example of minimal Haken manifold. Anothermotivation is to study epimorphisms of 3-manifold groups via maps of non-zero degree between 3-manifolds. Many examples are given.

Abstract: We give a brief summary of some of our work and our joint work with Stephan Tillmann on solving Thurston's equation and Haken equation on triangulated 3-manifolds in this paper. Several conjectures on the existence of solutions to Thurston's equation and Haken equation are made. Resolutions of these conjecture will lead to a new proof of the Poincar\'e conjecture without using the Ricci flow. We approach these conjectures by a finite dimensional variational principle so that its critical points are related to solutions to Thurston's gluing equation and Haken's normal surface equation. The action functional is the volume. This is a generalization of an earlier program by Casson and Rivin for compact 3-manifolds with torus boundary.

Abstract:This survey paper contains an elementary exposition of Casson and Rivin's technique for finding the hyperbolic metric on a 3-manifold M with toroidal boundary. We also survey a number of applications of this technique. The method involves subdividing M into ideal tetrahedra and solving a system of gluing equations to find hyperbolic shapes for the tetrahedra. The gluing equations decompose into a linear and non-linear part. The solutions to the linear equations form a convex polytope A. The solution to the non-linear part (unique if it exists) is a critical point of a certain volume functional on this polytope. The main contribution of this paper is an elementary proof of Rivin's theorem that a critical point of the volume functional on A produces a complete hyperbolic structure on M.

Abstract:We consider the problem of realizing tight contact structures on closed orientable three-manifolds. By applying the theorems of Hofer et al., one may deduce tightness from dynamical properties of (Reeb) flows transverse to the contact structure. We detail how two classical constructions, Dehn surgery and branched covering, may be performed on dynamically-constrained links in such a way as to preserve a transverse tight contact structure.
