Abstract:We give a parity condition of a Heegaard diagram to show that it is unstabilized. This improves the result of [5]. As an application, we construct unstabilized Heegaard splittings by Dehn twists on any given Heegaard splitting.

Abstract:Let two Heegaard splittings $V_1 \cup W_1$ and $V_2 \cup W_2$ of a 3-manifold $M$ be given. We consider the union stabilization $M=V \cup W$ which is a common stabilization of $V_1 \cup W_1$ and $V_2 \cup W_2$ having the property that $V=V_1 \cup V_2$. We show that any two Heegaard splittings of a 3-manifold have a union stabilization. We also give some examples with numerical bounds on the minimal genus of union stabilization. On the other hand, we give an example of a candidate for which the minimal genus of union stabilization is strictly larger than the usual stable genus -- the minimal genus of common stabilization.

Abstract:We consider the family of Heegaard splittings of genus $g$ at least three which are defined via a glueing map that is the $n$-th power of the Dehn twist along a curve that satisfies a natural topological assumption, namely pared acylindricity. We show that if $n$ is at least 14, then the Heegaard splitting has a hyperbolic metric for which the simple closed curve defining the Dehn twist is a closed geodesic of length at least $0.7/(n^2g^2)$ and at most $34.3/n^2$.

Abstract:We construct families of pairs of Heegaard splittings that must be stabilized several times to become equivalent. The first such pair differs only by their orientation. These are genus n splittings of a closed 3-manifold that must be stabilized at least n-2 times to become equivalent. The second is a pair of genus n splittings of a manifold with toroidal boundary that must be stabilized at least n-4 times to become equivalent. The last example is a pair of genus n splittings of a closed 3-manifold that must be stabilized at least ${1/2}n -3$ times to become equivalent, regardless of their orientations. All of these examples are splittings of manifolds that are obtained from simpler manifolds by gluing along incompressible surfaces via "sufficiently complicated" maps.

Abstract:We give two criteria for diagrams of Heegaard splittings of 3-manifolds. Weaker one of them guarantees that the splitting is strongly irreducible, and the stronger one guarantees in addition that the Goeritz group is finite. They are generalizations of the criteria introduced by Casson-Gordon and Lustig-Moriah. Their original ones require as input the diagram formed by a pair of maximal disk systems. Our present ones accept as input that of arbitrary disk systems, including minimal disk systems. In other words, our criteria accept Heegaard diagrams.

Abstract:It is Thurston’s result that for a hyperbolic knot K in S 3 , almost all Dehn fillings on its complement result in hyperbolic 3-manifolds except some exceptional cases. So almost all produced 3-manifolds have the same geometry. It is known that its complement in S 3 , denoted by E ( K ), admits a Heegaard splitting. Then it is expected that there is a similar result on Heegaard distance for Dehn fillings. In this paper, Dehn fillings on genus two Heegaard splittings are studied. More precisely, we prove that if the distance of a given genus two Heegaard splitting of E ( K ) is at least 3, then for any two degenerating slopes on ∂E ( K ), there is a universal bound of their distance in the curve complex of ∂E ( K ).

Abstract:Let $F$ be a totally real field of degree $g$, and let $p$ be a prime number. We construct $g$ partial Hasse invariants on the characteristic $p$ fiber of the Pappas-Rapoport splitting model of the Hilbert modular variety for $F$ with level prime to $p$, extending the usual partial Hasse invariants defined over the Rapoport locus. In particular, when $p$ ramifies in $F$, we solve the problem of lack of partial Hasse invariants. Using the stratification induced by these generalized partial Hasse invariants on the splitting model, we prove in complete generality the existence of Galois pseudo-representations attached to Hecke eigenclasses of paritious weight occurring in the coherent cohomology of Hilbert modular varieties $\mathrm{mod}$ $p^m$, extending a previous result of M. Emerton and the authors which required $p$ to be unramified in $F$.

Abstract:Abstract We introduce a multiparameter deformation of the triply‐graded Khovanov–Rozansky homology of links colored by one‐column Young diagrams, generalizing the “‐ified” link homology of Gorsky–Hogancamp and work of Cautis–Lauda–Sussan. For each link component, the natural set of deformation parameters corresponds to interpolation coordinates on the Hilbert scheme of the plane. We extend our deformed link homology theory to braids by introducing a monoidal dg 2‐category of curved complexes of type A singular Soergel bimodules. Using this framework, we promote to the curved setting the categorical colored skein relation from our recent joint work and also the notion of splitting map for the colored full twists on two strands. As applications, we compute the invariants of colored Hopf links in terms of ideals generated by Haiman determinants and use these results to establish general link splitting properties for our deformed, colored, triply‐graded link homology. Informed by this, we formulate several conjectures that have implications for the relation between (colored) Khovanov–Rozansky homology and Hilbert schemes.

Abstract:Let $M=H_{+}\cup_{S} H_{-}$ be a genus $g$ Heegaard splitting with Heegaard distance $n\geq \kappa+2$: (1) Let $c_{1}$, $c_{2}$ be two slopes in the same component of $\partial_{-}H_{-}$, such that the natural Heegaard splitting $M^{i}=H_{+}\cup_{S} (H_{-}\cup_{c_{i}} 2-handle)$ has distance less than $n$, then the distance of $c_{1}$ and $c_{2}$ in the curve complex of $\partial_{-}H_{-}$ is at most $3\mathfrak{M}+2$, where $\kappa$ and $\mathfrak{M}$ are constants due to Masur-Minsky. (2) Let $M^{*}$ be the manifold obtained by attaching a collection of handlebodies $\mathscr{H}$ to $\partial_{-} H_{-}$ along a map $f$ from $\partial \mathscr{H}$ to $\partial_{-} H_{-}$. If $f$ is a sufficiently large power of a generic pseudo-Anosov map, then the distance of the Heegaard splitting $M^{*}=H_{+}\cup (H_{-}\cup_{f} \mathscr{H})$ is still $n$. The proofs rely essentially on Masur-Minsky's theory of curve complex.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth irreducible complex projective curve of genus $g\,\geq\, 2$, and let $D\,=\,x_1+\dots+x_r$ be a reduced effective divisor on $X$. Denote by $U_{\alpha}(L)$ the moduli space of stable parabolic vector bundles on $X$ of rank $n$, determinant $L$ of degree $d$ with flag type $\{\{k^i_j\}_{j=1}^{m_i}\}_{i=1}^r$. Assume that the greatest common divisor of the collection of integers $\{\text{degree}(L),\, \{\{k^i_j\}_{j=1}^{m_i}\}_{i=1}^r\}$ is $1$; this condition ensures that there is a Poincaré parabolic vector bundle on $X\times U_{\alpha}(L)$. The direct image, to $U_{\alpha}(L)$, of the vector bundle underlying the Poincaré parabolic vector bundle is called the parabolic Picard sheaf. We prove that the parabolic Picard sheaf is stable.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the following new ingredients: (1) rework on part of the Lagrangian surgery theory; (2) constructions of Lagrangian cobordisms on product symplectic manifolds; (3) extending Biran-Cornea Lagrangian cobordism theory to the immersed category. As a result, we manifest Seidel's exact sequences (both the Lagrangian version and the symplectomorphism version), as well as Wehrheim-Woodward's family Dehn twist sequence (including the codimension-1 case missing in the literature) as consequences of our surgery/cobordism constructions. Moreover, we obtain an expression of the autoequivalence of Fukaya category induced by Dehn twists along Lagrangian $\mathbb{RP}^n$, $\mathbb{CP}^n$ and $\mathbb{HP}^n$, which matches Huybrechts-Thomas's mirror prediction of the $\mathbb{CP}^n$ case modulo connecting maps. We also prove the split generation of any symplectomorphism by Dehn twists in $ADE$-type Milnor fibers.

Abstract:This paper concerns stability functions for Dynkin quivers, in the generality introduced by Rudakov. We show that relatively few inequalities need to be satisfied for a stability function to be totally stable (i.e. to make every indecomposable stable). Namely, a stability function $\mu$ is totally stable if and only if $\mu(\tau V) < \mu(V)$ for every almost split sequence $0 \to \tau V \to E \to V \to 0$ where $E$ is indecomposable. These can be visualized as those sequences around the "border" of the Auslander-Reiten quiver.

Expansions for Hilbert schemes of points on semistable degenerations

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to extend the expanded degeneration construction of Li and Wu to obtain good degenerations of Hilbert schemes of points on semistable families of surfaces, as well as to discuss alternative stability conditions and parallels to the GIT construction of Gulbrandsen, Halle and Hulek and logarithmic Hilbert scheme constructions of Maulik and Ranganathan. We construct a good degeneration of Hilbert schemes of points as a proper Deligne-Mumford stack and show that it provides a geometrically meaningful example of a construction arising from the work of Maulik and Ranganathan.

An algorithm to construct one-vertex triangulations of Heegaard splittings

Abstract:Following work of Jaco and Rubinstein (2006), which (non-constructively) proved that any 3-manifold admits a one-vertex layered triangulation, we present an algorithm, with implementation using Regina, that uses a combinatorial presentation of a Heegaard diagram to construct a generalised notion of a layered triangulation. We show that work of Huszár and Spreer (2019) extends to our construction: given a genus-$g$ Heegaard splitting, our algorithm generates a triangulation with cutwidth bounded above by $4g-2$. Beyond Heegaard splittings, our construction actually extends to a natural generalisation of Dehn fillings: given a one-vertex triangulation with a genus-$g$ boundary component $B$, we can construct a one-vertex triangulation of any 3-manifold obtained by filling $B$ with a handlebody. To demonstrate the usefulness of our algorithm, we present findings from preliminary computer searches using this algorithm.

Abstract:A weak reducing pair in a Heegaard splitting M = V \cup_S W is a pair of disjoint essential disks D \in V and E \in W. The weakly reducible Heegaard splitting contains at least one weak reducing pair. Critical Heegaard splitting is a special case of weakly reducible Heegaard splitting which contains at least two weak reducing pairs satisfying some special conditions. In this paper, we discuss the properties of weak reducing pairs in a critical Heegaard splitting and give a necessary condition for Heegaard surface to be critical.

Stable Parabolic Higgs Bundles as Asymptotically Stable Decorated Swamps

Abstract:Parabolic Higgs bundles can be described in terms of decorated swamps, which we studied in a recent paper. This description induces a notion of stability of parabolic Higgs bundles depending on a parameter, and we construct their moduli space inside the moduli space of decorated swamps. We then introduce asymptotic stability of decorated swamps in order to study the behavior of the stability condition as one parameter approaches infinity. The main result is the existence of a constant, such that stability with respect to parameters greater than this constant is equivalent to asymptotic stability. This implies boundedness of all decorated swamps which are semistable with respect to some parameter. Finally, we recover the usual stability condition of parabolic Higgs bundles as asymptotic stability.

Parity-check Codes from Disjunct Matrices

Abstract:The matrix representations of linear codes have been well-studied for use as disjunct matrices. However, no connection has previously been made between the properties of disjunct matrices and the parity-check codes obtained from them. This paper makes this connection for the first time. We provide some fundamental results on parity-check codes from general disjunct matrices (in particular, a minimum distance bound). We then consider three specific constructions of disjunct matrices and provide parameters of their corresponding parity-check codes including rate, distance, girth, and density. We show that, by choosing the correct parameters, the codes we construct have the best possible error-correction performance after one round of bit-flipping decoding with regard to a modified version of Gallager's bit-flipping decoding algorithm.
