Abstract:Given an ideal $I$ we investigate the decompositions of Betti diagrams of the graded family of ideals $\{I^k \}_k$ formed by taking powers of $I$. We prove conjectures of Engström and show that there is a stabilization in the Boij-Söderberg decompositions of $I^k$ for $k>>0$ when $I$ is a homogeneous ideal with generators in a single degree. In particular, the number of terms in the decompositions with positive coefficients remains constant for $k>>0$, the pure diagrams appearing in each decomposition have the same shape, and the coefficients of these diagrams are given by polynomials in $k$. We also show that a similar result holds for decompositions with arbitrary coefficients arising from other chains of pure diagrams.

Abstract:Several authors investigating the asymptotic behaviour of the Betti diagrams of the graded system obtained by taking powers of an ideal have shown that the shape of the nonzero entries in the diagrams stabilizes when $I$ is a homogeneous ideal with generators of the same degree. In this paper, we study the Betti diagrams of graded systems of ideals built by taking the initial ideals or generic initial ideals of powers, and discuss the stabilization of additional collections of Betti diagrams. Our main result shows that when I has generators of the same degree, the entries in the Betti diagrams of the reverse lexicographic generic initial system are given asymptotically by polynomials and that the shape of the diagrams stabilizes.

Betti Cones of Stanley-Reisner Ideals

Abstract:The aim of this thesis is to investigate the Betti diagrams of squarefree monomial ideals in polynomial rings. We use two key tools to help us study these diagrams. The first is the Stanley-Reisner Correspondence, which assigns a unique simplicial complex to every squarefree monomial ideal, and thus allows us to compute the Betti diagrams of these ideals from combinatorial properties of their corresponding complexes. As such, most of our work is combinatorial in nature. The second tool is Boij-Soderberg Theory, which views Betti diagrams as vectors in a rational vector space, and investigates them by considering the convex cone they generate. This thesis applies the theory to the cones generated by diagrams of squarefree monomial ideals. We begin by introducing all of these concepts, along with some preliminary results in both algebra and combinatorics. Chapter 3 then presents the dimensions of our cones, along with the vector spaces they span. Chapters 4 and 5 are devoted to the pure Betti diagrams in these cones, and the combinatorial properties of their associated complexes. Finally, Chapter 6 builds on these results to prove a partial analogue of the first Boij-Soderberg conjecture for squarefree monomial ideals, by detailing an algorithm for generating pure Betti diagrams of squarefree monomial ideals of any degree type.

Abstract:Let $R=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ be a polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ and $I$ be a matroidal ideal of degree $d$. Let $\astab(I)$ and $\dstab(I)$ be the smallest integers $l$ and $k$, for which $\Ass(I^l)$ and $\depth(R/I^k)$ stabilize, respectively. In this paper, we show that $\astab(I),\dstab(I)\leq\min\{d,\ell(I)\}$, where $\ell(I)$ is the analytic spread of $I$. Furthermore, by a counterexample we give a negative answer to the conjecture of Herzog and Qureshi \cite{HQ} about stability of matroidal ideals.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a new criterion for the Cohen-Macaulayness of vertex splittable ideals, a family of monomial ideals recently introduced by Moradi and Khosh-Ahang. Our result relies on a Betti splitting of the ideal and provides an inductive way of checking the Cohen-Macaulay property. As a result, we obtain characterizations for Gorenstein, level and pseudo-Gorenstein vertex splittable ideals. Furthermore, we provide new and simpler combinatorial proofs of known Cohen-Macaulay criteria for several families of monomial ideals, such as (vector-spread) strongly stable ideals and (componentwise) polymatroidals. Finally, we characterize the family of bi-Cohen-Macaulay graphs by the novel criterion for the Cohen-Macaulayness of vertex splittable ideals.

Building monomial ideals with fixed betti numbers

Abstract:Motivated by the fact that as the number of generators of an ideal grows so does the complexity of calculating relations among the generators, this paper identifies collections of monomial ideals with a growing number of generators which have predictable free resolutions. We use elementary collapses from discrete homotopy theory to construct infinitely many monomial ideals, with an arbitrary number of generators, which have similar or the same betti numbers. We show that the Cohen-Macaulay property in each unmixed (pure) component of the ideal is preserved as the ideal is expanded.

The regularity of almost all edge ideals

Abstract:A fruitful contemporary paradigm in graph theory is that almost all graphs that do not contain a certain subgraph have common structural characteristics. The "almost" is crucial, without it there is no structure. In this paper we transfer this paradigm to commutative algebra and make use of deep graph theoretic results. A key tool are the critical graphs introduced by Balogh and Butterfield. We consider edge ideals $I_G$ of graphs and their Betti numbers. The numbers of the form $\beta_{i,2i+2}$ constitute the "main diagonal" of the Betti table. It is well known that any Betti number $\beta_{i,j}(I_G)$ below (or equivalently, to the left of) this diagonal is always zero. We identify a certain "parabola" inside the Betti table and call parabolic Betti numbers the entries of the Betti table bounded on the left by the main diagonal and on the right by this parabola. Let $\beta_{i,j}$ be a parabolic Betti number on the $r$-th row of the Betti table, for $r\ge3$. Our main results state that almost all graphs $G$ with $\beta_{i,j}(I_G)=0$ can be partitioned into $r-2$ cliques and one independent set, and in particular for almost all graphs $G$ with $\beta_{i,j}(I_G)=0$ the regularity of $I_G$ is $r-1$.

Abstract:Let $R=K[x_1,...,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ with the maximal ideal $\frak{m}=(x_1,...,x_n)$. Let $\astab(I)$ and $\dstab(I)$ be the smallest integer $n$ for which $\Ass(I^n)$ and $\depth(I^n)$ stabilize, respectively. In this paper we show that $\astab(I)=\dstab(I)$ in the following cases: \begin{itemize} \item[(i)] $I$ is a matroidal ideal and $n\leq 5$. \item[(ii)] $I$ is a polymatroidal ideal, $n=4$ and $\frak{m}\notin\Ass^{\infty}(I)$, where $\Ass^{\infty}(I)$ is the stable set of associated prime ideals of $I$. \item[(iii)] $I$ is a polymatroidal ideal of degree $2$. \end{itemize} Moreover, we give an example of a polymatroidal ideal for which $\astab(I)\neq\dstab(I)$. This is a counterexample to the conjecture of Herzog and Qureshi, according to which these two numbers are the same for polymatroidal ideals.

Partial Betti splittings with applications to binomial edge ideals

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a partial Betti splitting of a homogeneous ideal, generalizing the notion of a Betti splitting first given by Francisco, Hà, and Van Tuyl. Given a homogeneous ideal $I$ and two ideals $J$ and $K$ such that $I = J+K$, a partial Betti splitting of $I$ relates some of the graded Betti of $I$ with those of $J, K$, and $J\cap K$. As an application, we focus on the partial Betti splittings of binomial edge ideals. Using this new technique, we generalize results of Saeedi Madani and Kiani related to binomial edge ideals with cut edges, we describe a partial Betti splitting for all binomial edge ideals, and we compute the total second Betti number of binomial edge ideals of trees.

Abstract:Let $I$ be a monomial ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring $R = k[x_1,...,x_r]$. In this paper we give an upper bound on $\overline{\dstab} (I)$ in terms of $r$ and the maximal generating degree $d(I)$ of $I$ such that $\depth R/\overline{I^n}$ is constant for all $n\geqslant \overline{\dstab}(I)$. As an application, we classify the class of monomial ideals $I$ such that $\overline{I^n}$ is Cohen-Macaulay for some integer $n\gg 0$.

Limit Behavior of the Rational Powers of Monomial Ideals

Abstract:We investigate the rational powers of ideals. We find that in the case of monomial ideals, the canonical indexing leads to a characterization of the rational powers yielding that symbolic powers of squarefree monomial ideals are indeed rational powers themselves. Using the connection with symbolic powers techniques, we use splittings to show the convergence of depths and normalized Castelnuovo-Mumford regularities. We show the convergence of Stanley depths for rational powers, and as a consequence of this we show the before-now unknown convergence of Stanley depths of integral closure powers. In addition, we show the finiteness of asymptotic associated primes, and we find that the normalized lengths of local cohomology modules converge for rational powers, and hence for symbolic powers of squarefree monomial ideals.

Abstract:A foundational principle in the study of modules over standard graded polynomial rings is that geometric positivity conditions imply vanishing of Betti numbers. The main goal of this paper is to determine the extent to which this principle extends to the nonstandard graded case. In this setting, the classical arguments break down, and the results become much more nuanced. We introduce a new notion of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and employ exterior algebra techniques to control the shapes of nonstandard graded minimal free resolutions. Our main result reveals a unique feature in the nonstandard graded case: the possible degrees of the syzygies of a graded module in this setting are controlled not only by its regularity, but also by its depth. As an application of our main result, we show that, given a simplicial projective toric variety and a module M over its coordinate ring, the multigraded Betti numbers of M are contained in a particular polytope when M satisfies an appropriate positivity condition.

Abstract:Let $J$ be any ideal in a strongly $F$-regular, diagonally $F$-split ring $R$ essentially of finite type over an $F$-finite field. We show that $J^{s+t} \subseteq \tau(J^{s - \epsilon}) \tau(J^{t-\epsilon})$ for all $s, t, \epsilon > 0$ for which the formula makes sense. We use this to show a number of novel containments between symbolic and ordinary powers of prime ideals in this setting, which includes all determinantal rings and a large class of toric rings in positive characteristic. In particular, we show that $P^{(2hn)} \subseteq P^n$ for all prime ideals $P$ of height $h$ in such rings.

On Betti numbers for symmetric powers of modules

Abstract:Let $M$ be a finitely generated module over a local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m})$. By $\mathcal{S}_j(M)$, we denote the $j$th symmetric power of $M$ ($j$th graded component of the symmetric algebra $\mathcal{S}_R(M)$). The purpose of this paper is to investigate the minimal free resolutions $\mathcal{S}_j(M)$ as $R$-module for each $j\geq 2$ and determine the Betti numbers of $\mathcal{S}_j(M)$ in terms of the Betti numbers of $M$. This has some applications, for example for linear type ideals $I$, we obtain formulas of the Betti numbers $I^j$ in terms of the Betti numbers of $I$. In addition, we establish upper and lower bounds of Betti numbers of $\mathcal{S}_j(M)$ in terms of Betti numbers of $M$. In particular, obtain some applications of the famous Buchsbaum-Eisenbud-Horrocks conjecture.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite simple graph and let $I(G)$ be its edge ideal. In this article, we deeply investigate the squarefree powers of $I(G)$ by means of Betti splittings. When $G$ is a forest, it is shown that the normalized depth function of $I(G)$ is non-increasing. Furthermore, we compute explicitly the regularity function of squarefree powers of $I(G)$ with $G$ a forest, confirming a conjecture of Erey and Hibi.

Stability Conditions on Free Abelian Quotients

Abstract:We study slope-stable vector bundles and Bridgeland stability conditions on varieties which are a quotient of a smooth projective variety by a finite abelian group $G$ acting freely. We show there is a one-to-one correspondence between $\widehat{G}$-invariant geometric stability conditions on the quotient and $G$-invariant geometric stability conditions on the cover. We apply our results to describe a connected component inside the stability manifolds of free abelian quotients when the cover has finite Albanese morphism. This applies to varieties with non-finite Albanese morphism which are free abelian quotients of varieties with finite Albanese morphism, such as Beauville-type and bielliptic surfaces. This gives a partial answer to a question raised by Lie Fu, Chunyi Li, and Xiaolei Zhao: If a variety $X$ has non-finite Albanese morphism, does there always exist a non-geometric stability condition on $X$? We also give counterexamples to a conjecture of Fu-Li-Zhao concerning the Le Potier function, which characterises Chern classes of slope-semistable sheaves. As a result of independent interest, we give a description of the set of geometric stability conditions on an arbitrary surface in terms of a refinement of the Le Potier function. This generalises a result of Fu-Li-Zhao from Picard rank one to arbitrary Picard rank.

Abstract:Families of Bridgeland stability conditions induce families of stability data, wall-crossing structures and scattering diagrams on the motivic Hall algebra. These structures can be transferred to the quantum torus if the stability conditions of the family have global dimension at most 2. We show that geometric stability conditions on surfaces with nef anticanonical bundle have global dimension 2 and we study the resulting family of stability data. We formulate a conjecture relating this family to the family of stability data associated with a quiver with potential and we verify this conjecture for the projective plane.
