Abstract:The internal dynamics of strongly interacting systems and that of biomolecules such as proteins display several important analogies, despite the huge difference in their characteristic energy and length scales. For example, in all such systems, collective excitations, cooperative transitions and phase transitions emerge as the result of the interplay of strong correlations with quantum or thermal fluctuations. In view of such an observation, some theoretical methods initially developed in the context of theoretical nuclear physics have been adapted to investigate the dynamics of biomolecules. In this talk, we review some of our recent studies performed along this direction. In particular, we discuss how the path integral formulation of the molecular dynamics allows to overcome some of the long-standing problems and limitations which emerge when simulating the protein folding dynamics at the atomistic level of detail.

Nuclear Quantum Many-Body Dynamics: From Collective Vibrations to Heavy-Ion Collisions

Abstract:A summary of recent researches on nuclear dynamics with realistic microscopic quantum approaches is presented. The Balian-Vénéroni variational principle is used to derive the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) equation describing the dynamics at the mean-field level, as well as an extension including small-amplitude quantum fluctuations which is equivalent to the time-dependent random-phase approximation (TDRPA). Such formalisms as well as their practical implementation in the nuclear physics framework with modern three-dimensional codes are discussed. Recent applications to nuclear dynamics, from collective vibrations to heavy-ion collisions are presented. A particular attention is devoted to the interplay between collective motions and internal degrees of freedom. For instance, the harmonic nature of collective vibrations is questioned. Nuclei are also known to exhibit superfluidity due to pairing residual interaction. Extensions of the theoretical approach to study such pairing vibrations are now available. Large amplitude collective motions are investigated in the framework of heavy-ion collisions leading, for instance, to the formation of a compound system. How fusion is affected by the internal structure of the collision partners, such as their deformation, is discussed. Other mechanisms in competition with fusion, and responsible for the formation of fragments which differ from the entrance channel (transfer reactions, deep-inelastic collisions, and quasi-fission) are investigated. Finally, studies of actinide collisions forming, during very short times of few zeptoseconds, the heaviest nuclear systems available on Earth, are presented.

Abstract:Violent nuclear collisions are open systems which require a non-equilibrium description when the process should be followed from the first instants. The heated system produced in the collision, can no more be treated within an independent-particle picture and additional correlations should be taken into account: they rely to in-medium dissipation and phase-space fluctuations. Their interplay with the one-body collective behaviour activates the transport dynamics: large-amplitude fluctuations and bifurcations in a variety of mechanisms appear, from fusion to neck formation till eventually freezing out the system into several intermediate-mass clusters. Starting from fundamental concepts tested on nuclear matter, a microscopic description is built up to address violent processes occurring in heavy-ion collisions at Fermi energies and in spallation reactions, and it is applied to experimental observables.

Abstract:Descriptions of heavy-ion collisions at Fermi energies require to take into account in-medium dissipation and phase-space fluctuations. The interplay of these correlations with the one-body collective behaviour determines the properties (kinematics and fragment production) and the variety of mechanisms (from fusion to neck formation and multifragmentation) of the exit channel. Starting from fundamental concepts tested on nuclear matter, we build up a microscopic description which addresses finite systems and applies to experimental observables.

Abstract:Many-body correlations characterizing the Constrained Molecular Dynamics (CoMD)are analyzed in the case of finite and zero range effective microscopic interactions. The study begins by analyzing the case of infinite nuclear matter at zero temperature. A comparison with the predictions in the mean-field(MF) limit corresponding to different effective masses, highlights non-negligible differences regarding the produced Equation of State (EoS). A procedure is illustrated to determine the necessary corrections of the effective interaction parameters in the CoMD model so to reproduce the chosen EoS. The specific model calculations, the general feature of the discussed correlations gives a wider meaning to the resulting differences, which are in fact strongly related both to the Pauli principle constraint and to the localization effects related to wave-packets dynamics. Moving on to finite systems, preliminary results are shown in relation to the reaction mechanisms in the $^{64}Ni+^{48}Ca$ system described by the CoMD model. Therefore, the topic covered illustrates the effects produced by the correlations of the CoMD dynamics on the EoS and on some observables commonly studied in heavy ion collisions.

Dynamics of dilute nuclear matter with light clusters and in-medium effects

Abstract:We investigate the dynamics of dilute systems composed of nucleons and light clusters within a linear response approach, taking into account the in-medium Mott effects on cluster appearance, through a density-dependent momentum cut-off. We find that spinodal instabilities and associated growth rates are severely affected by the presence of light clusters and, in particular, by the treatment of in-medium effects, foreshadowing intriguing consequences for fragment formation in heavy-ion collisions and in the broader astrophysical context.

Abstract:Several important milestones and hot topics in nuclear physics researches are reviewed. The discoveries of the atomic nucleus and its components are introduced firstly, followed by the corresponding nuclear bulk properties, including the nuclear masses, and radii, and the establishment of the nuclear shell model based on these discoveries. By examining the spin-orbital potential leading to the nuclear shell model, the nuclear spin and pseudospin symmetries, are discussed. As one of the most important aspects in nuclear physics, the nuclear rotation excitation dated back to 1960s, is reviewed in detail. Finally the chances and challenges for nuclear physics in the twenty-first century are provided based on some selected hot topics and important issues in current nuclear physics frontiers.

Abstract:In our contribution to the INPC98 conference we reported on the experimental investigation of high spin collective states in medium and heavy mass N approximate to Z nuclei at LNL. The main purpose is to set light on the role of the proton-neutron interaction in the collective behavior of the nucleus.In medium mass N=Z nuclei, in contrast with the stable nuclei, valence protons and neutrons occupy the same orbitals and one may expect a reinforcement of neutron-proton T=0 (np) pairing correlations[1]. In this interesting subject, the medium mass N=Z=36 Kr-72 has been studied and completely reported in [2].In this proceedings we will concentrate in unpublished results concerning the onset of collectivity on nearly spherical nuclei in the Sn-100 region. In nuclei with Z=50 and Z=49 dipole bands have been found indicating the presence of "Magnetic Rotation" [3].

It shows that the related studies are the very active current frontier commonly interested by nuclear physics, particle physics, astrophysics, cosmology, statistical physics and other areas. A lot of significant progress has been made. However, not only concrete problems but also researching approaches need to be studied further.

Abstract:The chemical evolution of the Universe and several phases of the stellar life are regulated by minute nuclear reactions. The key point for each of these reactions is the value of cross sections at the energies at which they take place in stellar environments. Direct cross-section measurements are mainly hampered by the very low counting rate and by cosmic background, nevertheless they have become possible by combining the best experimental techniques with the cosmic silence of an underground laboratory. In the nineties the LUNA (Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics) collaboration opened the era of underground nuclear astrophysics installing first a home-made 50 kV and later on, a second 400 kV accelerator under the Gran Sasso mountain in Italy: in 25 years of experimental activity, important reactions responsible for hydrogen burning could have been studied down to the relevant energies thanks to the high current proton and helium beams provided by the machines. The interest to the next and warmer stages of star evolution (i.e. post main sequence, helium and carbon burning) drove a new project based on an ion accelerator in the MV range called LUNA-MV, able to deliver proton, helium and carbon beams. The present contribution is aimed to discuss the state-of-the-art for some selected key processes of post main sequence stellar phases: the 12Cag and the 12C+12C fundamental for helium and carbon burning phases, and 13Can and 22Neag that are relevant to the synthesis of heavy elements in AGB stars. The perspectives opened by an underground MV-facility will be highlighted.

Abstract:Abstract Particle identification techniques are fundamental tools in nuclear physics experiments. Discriminating particles or nuclei produced in nuclear interactions allows to better understand the underlying physics mechanisms. The energy interval of these reactions is very broad, from sub-eV up to TeV. For this reason, many different identification approaches have been developed, often combining two or more observables. This paper reviews several of these techniques with emphasis on the expertise gained within the current nuclear physics scientific program of the Italian Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN).

Abstract:The Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare—Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) is one of the largest underground physics laboratory, a very peculiar environment suited for experiments in Astroparticle Physics, Nuclear Physics and Fundamental Symmetries. The newly established Bellotti Ion Beam facility represents a major advance in the possibilities of studying nuclear processes in an underground environment. A workshop was organized at LNGS in the framework of the Nuclear Physics Mid Term Plan in Italy, an initiative of the Nuclear Physics Division of the Instituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare to discuss the opportunities that will be possible to study in the near future by employing state-of-the-art detection systems. In this report, a detailed discussion of the outcome of the workshop is presented.

Abstract:Recent experimental results and developments in the theoretical treatment of neutrino-nucleus interactions in the energy range of 1-10 GeV are discussed. Difficulties in extracting neutrino-nucleon cross sections from neutrino-nucleus scattering data are explained and significance of understanding nuclear effects for neutrino oscillation experiments is stressed. Detailed discussions of the status of two-body current contribution in the kinematic region dominated by quasi-elastic scattering and specific features of partonic nuclear effects in weak DIS scattering are presented.

Abstract:Recent progress of the quantum molecular dynamics model for describing the dynamics of heavy-ion collisions is viewed, in particular the nuclear fragmentation, isospin physics, particle production and in-medium effect, hadron-induced nuclear reactions, hypernucleus etc. The neck fragmentation in Fermi-energy heavy-ion collisions is investigated for extracting the symmetry energy at subsaturation densities. The isospin effects, in-medium properties and the behavior of high-density symmetry energy in medium and high energy heavy-ion collisions are thoroughly discussed. The hypernuclide dynamics formed in heavy-ion collisions and in hadron induced reactions is analyzed and addressed in the future experiments at the High-Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF).

Abstract:The determination of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) is crucial for a complete understanding of the protons and neutrons that make most of the visible matter in the universe. Years of dedicated studies have yielded a quite precise knowledge of the behavior of partons moving collinearly within a proton. However Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) experiments off nuclei have shown a non-trivial difference with respect to DIS in protons, hinting that the partons in a nuclear medium do not behave the same way as in a free proton. In this work we will discuss the latest results in nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) and how data from planned future experiments can help broaden our understanding of the nPDFs.

Abstract:The time-dependent version of nuclear density functional theory, using functionals derived from Skyrme interactions, is able to approximately describe nuclear dynamics. We present time-dependent results of calculations of dipole resonances, concentrating on excitations of valence neutrons against a proton plus neutron core in the neutron-rich doubly-magic $^{132}$Sn nucleus, and results of collision dynamics, highlighting potential routes to ternary fusion, with the example of a collision of $^{48}$Ca+$^{48}$Ca+$^{208}$Pb resulting in a compound nucleus of element 120 stable against immiedate fission
