Abstract:Quaternions were appeared through Lagrangian formulation of mechanics in Symplectic vector space. Its general form was obtained from the Clifford algebra, and Frobenius' theorem, which says that "the only finite-dimensional real division algebra are the real field ${\bf R}$, the complex field ${\bf C}$ and the algebra ${\bf H}$ of quaternions" was derived. They appear also through Hamilton formulation of mechanics, as elements of rotation groups in the symplectic vector spaces. Quaternions were used in the solution of 4-dimensional Dirac equation in QED, and also in solutions of Yang-Mills equation in QCD as elements of noncommutative geometry. We present how quaternions are formulated in Clifford Algebra, how it is used in explaining rotation group in symplectic vector space and parallel transformation in holonomic dynamics. When a dynamical system has hysteresis, pre-symplectic manifolds and nonholonomic dynamics appear. Quaternions represent rotation of 3-dimensional sphere ${\bf S}^3$. Artin's generalized quaternions and Rohlin-Pontryagin's embedding of quaternions on 4-dimensional manifolds, and Kodaira's embedding of quaternions on ${\bf S}^1\times {\bf S}^3$ manifolds are also discussed.

Abstract:A quaternionic version of the Calabi problem was recently formulated by M. Verbitsky and the author. It conjectures a solvability of a quaternionic Monge-Ampere equation on a compact HKT manifold (HKT stays for HyperKaehler with Torsion). In this paper this problem is solved under an extra assumption that the manifold admits a flat hyperKaehler metric compactible with the underlying hypercomplex structure. The proof uses the continuity method and a priori estimates.

Abstract:We present two novel solutions of real Hilbert state quaternionic quantum mechanics ($\mathbb H$QM). Firstly, we observe that the angular momentum operator admits two different classes of physically non-equivalent free particles. As a second result, we study the Larmor precession to observe that it has a quaternionic solution where a novel phenomenological interpretation is possible, as well as a different of spin is possible, and these results may encourage experimental and theoretical investigations of the quaternionic theory.

Quaternionic Kaehler Detour Complexes & N=2 Supersymmetric Black Holes

Abstract:We study a class of supersymmetric spinning particle models derived from the radial quantization of stationary, spherically symmetric black holes of four dimensional N= 2 supergravities. By virtue of the c-map, these spinning particles move in quaternionic Kaehler manifolds. Their spinning degrees of freedom describe mini-superspace-reduced supergravity fermions. We quantize these models using BRST detour complex technology. The construction of a nilpotent BRST charge is achieved by using local (worldline) supersymmetry ghosts to generating special holonomy transformations. (An interesting byproduct of the construction is a novel Dirac operator on the superghost extended Hilbert space.) The resulting quantized models are gauge invariant field theories with fields equaling sections of special quaternionic vector bundles. They underly and generalize the quaternionic version of Dolbeault cohomology discovered by Baston. In fact, Baston's complex is related to the BPS sector of the models we write down. Our results rely on a calculus of operators on quaternionic Kaehler manifolds that follows from BRST machinery, and although directly motivated by black hole physics, can be broadly applied to any model relying on quaternionic geometry.

Abstract:By constructing normal coordinates on a quaternionic contact manifold M, we can osculate the quaternionic contact structure at each point by the standard quaternionic contact structure on the quaternionic Heisenberg group. By using this property, we can do harmonic analysis on general quaternionic contact manifolds, and solve the quaternionic contact Yamabe problem on M if its Yamabe invariant satisfies λ(M) < λ(ℍ n ).

Abstract:We present a digital catalog of images of 113 galaxies in this paper. These galaxies are all nearby, bright, large and well resolved. All images were recorded with charge coupled devices (CCDs) at the Palomar Observatory with the 1.5 meter telescope and at the Lowell Observatory with the 1.1 meter telescope. At Palomar we used the Thuan--Gunn g, r and i photometric bands to take 3 images each of 31 spiral galaxies; at Lowell we used the B_J and R bands (2 images per galaxy) of the photometric system by Gullixson et al. (1995) to observe 82 spirals and ellipticals. The galaxies were selected to span the Hubble classification classes. All data are photometrically calibrated with foreground stars removed. Important data on these galaxies published in the "Third Reference Catalog of Bright Galaxies" (RC3) are recorded in the FITS file headers. Abstract:This paper establishes the basis of the quaternionic differential geometry ($\mathbbm H$DG) initiated in a previous article. The usual concepts of curves and surfaces are generalized to quaternionic constraints, as well as the curvature and torsion concepts, differential forms, directional derivatives and the structural equations. The analogy between the quaternionic and the real geometries is obtained using a matrix representation of quaternions. The results evidences the quaternionic formalism as a suitable language to differential geometry that can be useful in various directions of future investigation.

Abstract:We show that quaternion quantum mechanics has well-founded mathematical roots and can be derived from the model of the elastic continuum by French mathematician Augustin Cauchy, i.e., it can be regarded as representing the physical reality of elastic continuum. Starting from the Cauchy theory (classical balance equations for isotropic Cauchy-elastic material) and using the Hamilton quaternion algebra, we present a rigorous derivation of the quaternion form of the non- and relativistic wave equations. The family of the wave equations and the Poisson equation are a straightforward consequence of the quaternion representation of the Cauchy model of the elastic continuum. This is the most general kind of quantum mechanics possessing the same kind of calculus of assertions as conventional quantum mechanics. The problem of the Schrödinger equation, where imaginary ‘i’ should emerge, is solved. This interpretation is a serious attempt to describe the ontology of quantum mechanics, and demonstrates that, besides Bohmian mechanics, the complete ontological interpretations of quantum theory exists. The model can be generalized and falsified. To ensure this theory to be true, we specified problems, allowing exposing its falsity.

Abstract:In this article we shall provide a survey on our recent works ([M-O1], [M-O2]) and their environs on differential geometry of Lagrangian submanifolds in specific symplectic Kahler manifolds, such as complex projective spaces, complex space forms, Hermitian symmetric spaces and Kahler C-spaces. We shall discuss (1) Hamiltonian minimality and Hamiltonian stability of Lagrangian submanifolds in Hamiltonian volume minimizing problem, (2) classification problem of homogeneous Lagrangian submanifolds from the viewpoint of Lagrangian orbits and moment maps, (3) tightness problem of Lagrangian submanifolds. Moreover we shall give attention to Lagrangian submanifolds in complex hyperquadrics, which are compact Hermitian symmetric spaces of rank 2. The relationship between certain minimal Lagrangian submanifold in complex hyperquadrics and isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres will be emphasized. Recently we gave a complete classification of compact homogeneous Lagrangian submanifolds in complex hyperquadrics and we determined the Hamiltonian stability of ALL compact minimal Lagrangian submanifolds embedded in complex hyperquadrics which are obtained as the Gauss images of homogeneous isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres.

Abstract:The usual formulations of time-dependent mechanics start from a given splitting $Y=R\times M$ of the coordinate bundle $Y\to R$. From physical viewpoint, this splitting means that a reference frame has been chosen. Obviously, such a splitting is broken under reference frame transformations and time-dependent canonical transformations. Our goal is to formulate time-dependent mechanics in gauge-invariant form, i.e., independently of any reference frame. The main ingredient in this formulation is a connection on the bundle $Y\to R$ which describes an arbitrary reference frame. We emphasize the following peculiarities of this approach to time-dependent mechanics. A phase space does not admit any canonical contact or presymplectic structure which would be preserved under reference frame transformations, whereas the canonical Poisson structure is degenerate. A Hamiltonian fails to be a function on a phase space. In particular, it can not participate in a Poisson bracket so that the evolution equation is not reduced to the Poisson bracket. This fact becomes relevant to the quantization procedure. Hamiltonian and Lagrangian formulations of time-dependent mechanics are not equivalent. A degenerate Lagrangian admits a set of associated Hamiltonians, none of which describes the whole mechanical system given by this Lagrangian.

Abstract:We exploit the Cartan-K\"ahler theory to prove the local existence of real analytic quaternionic contact structures for any prescribed values of the respective curvature functions and their covariant derivatives at a given point on a manifold. We show that, in a certain sense, the different real analytic quaternionic contact geometries in $4n+3$ dimensions depend, modulo diffeomorphisms, on $2n+2$ real analytic functions of $2n+3$ variables.

Abstract:In addition to standard and non-standard Lagrangians of classical mechanics, we consider, in this work, null Lagrangians that (i) identically satisfy the Euler-Lagrange equation and at the same time can be expressed as (ii) the total derivative of some scalar function. As an addendum to the properties in (i) and (ii) we find that null Lagrangians are also characterized by (iii) vanishing energy functions or Jacobi integrals. By working with higher-order SL(2;R) invariant Schwarzian derivatives introduced recently by Krivonos we demonstrate that these Schwarzians, especially the even-order ones, provide a natural basis to introduce higher-order null Lagrangians in Schwarzian mechanics.

Hermitian structures on a class of quaternionic Kähler manifolds

Abstract:Any quaternionic Kähler manifold $(\bar N,g_{\bar N},\mathcal Q)$ equipped with a Killing vector field $X$ with nowhere vanishing quaternionic moment map carries an integrable almost complex structure $J_1$ that is a section of the quaternionic structure $\mathcal Q$. Using the HK/QK correspondence, we study properties of the almost Hermitian structure $(g_{\bar N},\tilde J_1)$ obtained by changing the sign of $J_1$ on the distribution spanned by $X$ and $J_1X$. In particular, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for its integrability and for it being conformally Kähler. We show that for a large class of quaternionic Kähler manifolds containing the one-loop deformed c-map spaces, the structure $\tilde J_1$ is integrable. We do also show that the integrability of $\tilde J_1$ implies that $(g_{\bar N},\tilde J_1)$ is conformally Kähler in dimension four, but not in higher dimensions. In the special case of the one-loop deformation of the quaternionic Kähler symmetric spaces dual to the complex Grassmannians of two-planes we construct a third canonical Hermitian structure $(g_{\bar N},\hat J_1)$. Finally, we give a complete local classification of quaternionic Kähler four-folds for which $\tilde J_1$ is integrable and show that these are either locally symmetric or carry a cohomogeneity $1$ isometric action generated by one of the Lie algebras $\mathfrak{o}(2)\ltimes\mathfrak{heis}_3(\mathbb R)$, $\mathfrak{u}(2)$, or $\mathfrak{u}(1,1)$.
