Abstract:Ion-ion interactions are central to numerous phenomena in geology, biology, and material science, but current understanding is based on linear theories of limited physical applicability. Using the Langevin-Debye model, we investigate how nonlinear dielectric saturation alters screening of electrostatic interactions between solvated charges and show that charge screening in liquids strongly depends on the charge magnitudes but negligibly on the ion radii. Qualitatively different universal screening functions are predicted for ions with charges of the same or opposite signs.

Abstract:We study the screening of the Coulomb interaction in non polar systems by polarizable atoms. We show that in low dimensions and small finite size systems this screening deviates strongly from that conventionally assumed. In fact in one dimension the short range interaction is strongly screened and the long range interaction is anti-screened thereby strongly reducing the gradient of the Coulomb interaction and therefore the correlation effects. We argue that this effect explains the success of mean field single particle theories for large molecules.

Abstract:Screening of the electric field of a test charge by monolayer and double-layer composite fermion systems is considered. It is shown that the electric field of the test charge is partly screened at distances much large then the magnetic length. The value of screening as a function of the distance depends considerably on the filling factor. The effect of variation of the value of screening in the double-layer system upon a transition to a state described by the Halperin wave function is determined.

Abstract:The concept of a screening mass is a powerful tool to simplify the intricate physics of in-medium test charges surrounded by light charge carriers. While it has been successfully used to describe electromagnetic properties, its definition and computation in QCD is plagued by questions of gauge invariance and the presence of non-perturbative contributions from the magnetic sector. Here we present a recent alternative definition of a gauge invariant Debye mass parameter following closely the original idea of Debye and Hueckel. Our test charges are a static heavy quark-antiquark pair whose complex potential and its in-medium modification can be extracted using lattice QCD. By combining in a generalized Gauss-Law the non-perturbative aspects of quark binding with a perturbative ansatz for the medium effects, we succeed to describe the lattice values of the potential with a single temperature dependent parameter, in turn identified with a Debye mass. We find that its behavior, as evaluated in a recent quenched lattice QCD study, deviates from that in other approaches, such as hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory or from electric field correlators on the lattice. In particular around the phase transition its values tend to zero significantly faster than at weak-coupling.

Abstract:The study of quantum Coulomb systems at equilibrium is important for understanding properties of matter in many physical situations. Screening, recombination and van der Waals forces are basic phenomena which result from the interplay of Coulomb interactions, collective effects and quantum mechanics. Those phenomena are introduced in the first part of this lecture, through various physical examples. Their treatment within mean-field theories and phenomenological approaches is also exposed, while related predictions are discussed. This sheds light on fundamental issues, which must be analyzed without any \textsl{a priori} approximations or modelizations. The second part of this lecture is precisely devoted to the presentation of various exact results for the quantum proton-electron hydrogen plasma. Such results are derived within the Screened Cluster Representation, which is constructed by combining the path integral representation of the Coulomb gas with Mayer-like diagrammatical techniques. They illustrate the breakdown of Debye exponential screening by quantum fluctuations, as well as the emergence of familiar chemical species in suitable low-temperature and low-density limits. Also, the amplitude of van der Waals forces is shown to be reduced by free charges.

Abstract:This paper builds on two previous works, Lindgren et al. J. Comp. Phys. 371, 712-731 (2018) and Quan et al. <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1807.05384" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1807.05384">arXiv:1807.05384</a> (2018), to devise a new method to solve the problem of calculating electrostatic interactions in a system composed by many dielectric particles, embedded in a homogeneous dielectric medium, which in turn can also be permeated by charge carriers. The system is defined by the charge, size, position and dielectric constant of each particle, as well as the dielectric constant and Debye length of the medium. The effects of taking into account the dielectric nature of the particles is explored in selected scenarios where the presence of electrolytes in the medium can significantly influence the total undergoing interactions. Description of the mutual interactions between all particles in the system as being truly of many-body nature reveals how such effects can effectively influence the magnitudes and even directions of the resulting forces, especially those acting on particles that have a null net charge. Particular attention is given to a situation that can be related to colloidal particles in an electrolyte solution, where it's shown that polarization effects alone can substantially raise or lower---depending on the dielectric contrast between the particles and the medium---the energy barrier that divides particle coagulation and flocculation regions, when an interplay between electrostatic and additional van der Waals forces is considered. Overall, the results suggest that for an accurate description of the type of system in question, it is essential to consider particle polarization if the separation between the interacting particles are comparable to or smaller than the Debye length of the medium.

Double-slit and electromagnetic models to complete quantum mechanics

Abstract:We analyze a realistic microscopic model for electronic scattering with the neutral differential delay equations of motion of point charges of the Wheeler-Feynman electrodynamics. We propose a microscopic model according to the electrodynamics of point charges, complex enough to describe the essential physics. Our microscopic model reaches a simple qualitative agreement with the experimental results as regards interference in double-slit scattering and in electronic scattering by crystals. We discuss our model in the light of existing experimental results, including a qualitative disagreement found for the double-slit experiment. We discuss an approximation for the complex neutral differential delay equations of our model using piecewise-defined (discontinuous) velocities for all charges and piecewise-constant-velocities for the scattered charge. Our approximation predicts the De Broglie wavelength as an inverse function of the incoming velocity and in the correct order of magnitude. We explain the scattering by crystals in the light of the same simplified modeling with Einstein-local interactions. We include a discussion of the qualitative properties of the neutral-delay-equations of electrodynamics to stimulate future experimental tests on the possibility to complete quantum mechanics with electromagnetic models.

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters A, Ahead of Print. Similar to how general relativity emerged, quantum mechanics resulted from experimental observations that made us radically rethink our previous assumptions. Scientists who study atoms need to solve these three equations. They are for a system with N electrons affected by the nucleus's attractive Coulomb force and the repulsive force between each pair of electrons and other potentials. While general relativity has upended our large-scale conception of the universe, quantum mechanics calls into question all our intuition regarding particle physics. The Klein–Gordon (KG) resolution helps determine some physical systems and their properties by finding their bound states and eigenfunctions. These are resolved using analytical and numerical methods, as well as Coulomb and Yukawa potentials. In order to extract some of the first eigenvalues of the quantum mechanical system, we applied the Nikiforov–Uvarov (NU) method to the KGequation. The findings are significant for understanding nuclear charge radius, spin, nuclear diffusion and other topics in numerous theoretical physics and quantum chemistry fields because they are more generic and helpful.

Anisotropic electrostatic screening of charged colloids in nematic solvents

Abstract:The physical behaviour of anisotropic charged colloids is determined by their material dielectric anisotropy, affecting colloidal self-assembly, biological function and even out-of-equilibrium behaviour. However, little is known about anisotropic electrostatic screening, which underlies all electrostatic effective interactions in such soft or biological materials. In this work, we demonstrate anisotropic electrostatic screening for charged colloidal particles in a nematic electrolyte. We show that material anisotropy behaves markedly different from particle anisotropy: The electrostatic potential and pair interactions decay with an anisotropic Debye screening length, contrasting the constant screening length for isotropic electrolytes. Charged dumpling-shaped near-spherical colloidal particles in a nematic medium are used as an experimental model system to explore the effects of anisotropic screening, demonstrating competing anisotropic elastic and electrostatic effective pair interactions for colloidal surface charges tunable from neutral to high, yielding particle-separated metastable states. Generally, our work contributes to the understanding of electrostatic screening in nematic anisotropic media.

Resonant screening in dense and magnetized QCD matter

Abstract:We calculate the Debye screening mass in thermal, dense and magnetized QCD matter in the frame of resummed perturbation theory. In the limit of zero temperature, when the Landau energy level and Fermi surface of quarks match each other $\mu_q^2=2n|qB|$, where $q$, $\mu_q$ and $B$ are respectively the quark electric charge, chemical potential and external magnetic field, the screening mass diverges and the system is in the state of weakly interacting parton gas, which is very different from the known result of strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma at high temperature. The divergence disappears in thermal medium, but the screening mass oscillates with clear peaks at the matched magnetic field.

Abstract:The 1S0 pairing of symmetric nuclear matter is discussed in the framework of relativistic nuclear theory with Dyson–Schwinger equations (DSEs). The in-medium nucleon and meson propagators are treated in a more self-consistent way through meson polarizations. The screening effects on mesons due to in-medium nucleon excitation are found to reduce the 1S0 pairing gap and shift remarkably the gap peak to low density region.
Screening of electric field and nuclear EDM in non-stationary states of atoms and molecules

Abstract:According to the Schiff theorem, an external electric field vanishes at atomic nucleus in a neutral atom in a stationary state, i.e. it is completely shielded by electrons. This makes a nuclear electric dipole moment (EDM) unobservable. We show that if atom or molecule is not in a stationary state (e.g. in a superposition of two stationary states), electric field on the nucleus is not zero and interaction with nuclear EDM does not vanish. In molecules this effect is enhanced by the ratio of nuclear mass to to electron mass, $M_n/m_e$ , since nuclei in a molecule are slow (compare to electrons) and do not provide efficient screening in a non-stationary environment. Electric field on the nucleus may also affect nuclear reactions.

Abstract:We report bound state solutions of the Klein Gordon equation with a novel combined potential, the Eckart plus a class of Yukawa potential, by means of the parametric Nikiforov-Uvarov method. To deal the centrifugal and the coulombic behavior terms, we apply the Greene-Aldrich approximation scheme. We present any $\ell$-state energy eigenvalues and the corresponding normalized wave functions of a mentioned system in a closed form. We discuss various special cases related to our considered potential which are utility for other physical systems and show that these are consistent with previous reports in literature. Moreover, we calculate the non-relativistic thermodynamic quantities (partition function, mean energy, free energy, specific heat and entropy) for the potential model in question, and investigate them for a few diatomic molecules. We find that the energy eigenvalues are sensitive with regard to the quantum numbers $n_r$ and $\ell$ as well as the parameter $\delta$. Our results show that energy eigenvalues are more bounded at either smaller quantum number $\ell$ or smaller parameter $\delta$.

Abstract:The question of stability of a given quantum system made up of charged particles is of fundamental interest in atomic, molecular, and nuclear physics. In this work, the stability for the negatively charged positronium (Ps)-like ions or the three-body system ( Z e + , e − , e − ) with Yukawa potentials is studied using correlated exponential wavefunctions based on the Ritz variational method. We obtained the critical screening parameter μ C as a function of the continuously varied nuclear charge Z , the critical nuclear charge Z C as a function of the screening parameter μ , and the ionization energies in terms of the screening parameter μ and Z . The critical nuclear charge for the bare Coulomb system ( Z e + , e − , e − ) obtained using 700-term correlated exponential wavefunctions is in accord with the reported results. The ionization energy, μ C , and Z C for the Yukawa system ( Z e + , e − , e − ) exhibit interesting behaviors. The present study describes the possible nonexistence of Borromean binding as well as Efimov states. The possible existence of quasi-bound resonances states for the negatively charged screened Ps-like ions is briefly discussed.
Screened Coulomb interactions in metallic alloys: I. Universal screening in the atomic sphere approximation

Abstract:We have used the locally self-consistent Green's function (LSGF) method in supercell calculations to establish the distribution of the net charges assigned to the atomic spheres of the alloy components in metallic alloys with different compositions and degrees of order. This allows us to determine the Madelung potential energy of a random alloy in the single-site mean field approximation which makes the conventional single-site density-functional- theory coherent potential approximation (SS-DFT-CPA) method practically identical to the supercell LSGF method with a single-site local interaction zone that yields an exact solution of the DFT problem. We demonstrate that the basic mechanism which governs the charge distribution is the screening of the net charges of the alloy components that makes the direct Coulomb interactions short-ranged. In the atomic sphere approximation, this screening appears to be almost independent of the alloy composition, lattice spacing, and crystal structure. A formalism which allows a consistent treatment of the screened Coulomb interactions within the single-site mean-filed approximation is outlined. We also derive the contribution of the screened Coulomb interactions to the S2 formalism and the generalized perturbation method.

Abstract:A condensate of charged scalars in a neutralizing background of fermions (e.g., condensed helium-4 nuclei in an electron background in white dwarf cores) is investigated further. We discuss an effective Lagrangian approach to this system and show that the strong screening of an electric charge found previously in arXiv:0806.3692 in a mean-field approximation, is a consequence of a cancellation due to a phonon. The resulting propagators contain terms that strongly modify their infrared behavior. Furthermore, we evaluate a one-loop fermion quantum correction to the screened potential, and find that it is also suppressed by the phonon subtraction. Therefore, charged impurities (e.g., hydrogen or helium-3 nuclei) will be screened efficiently by the condensate.

A simple electrostatic model applicable to biomolecular recognition

Abstract:An exact, analytic solution for a simple electrostatic model applicable to biomolecular recognition is presented. In the model, a layer of high dielectric constant material (representative of the solvent, water) whose thickness may vary separates two regions of low dielectric constant material (representative of proteins, DNA, RNA, or similar materials), in each of which is embedded a point charge. For identical charges, the presence of the screening layer always lowers the energy compared to the case of point charges in an infinite medium of low dielectric constant. Somewhat surprisingly, the presence of a sufficiently thick screening layer also lowers the energy compared to the case of point charges in an infinite medium of high dielectric constant. For charges of opposite sign, the screening layer always lowers the energy compared to the case of point charges in an infinite medium of either high or low dielectric constant. The behavior of the energy leads to a substantially increased repulsive force between charges of the same sign. The repulsive force between charges of opposite signs is weaker than in an infinite medium of low dielectric constant material but stronger than in an infinite medium of high dielectric constant material. The presence of this behavior, which we name asymmetric screening, in the simple system presented here confirms the generality of the behavior that was established in a more complicated system of an arbitrary number of charged dielectric spheres in an infinite solvent.

Electromagnetic Debye mass within Gribov-Zwanziger action

Abstract:In the present study we have investigated the electromagnetic Debye mass by computing the static limit of the temporal component of the one-loop photon polarization tensor involving effective quarks in the loop. These effective quarks have been considered within the Gribov-Zwanziger action, thereby incorporating the necessary non-perturbative effects. As an academic exercise, we have also shown one of the applications of this Gribov modified Debye mass by using it to evaluate the real and imaginary parts of the heavy quark potential in a QED system. This computation of the electromagnetic Debye mass and the corresponding estimations of the heavy quark potential can be seen as stepping stones in the direction of further practical QCD calculations in the non perturbative domain.

On the spectrum of the screened Coulomb potential $V(r)=-r^{-1}e^{-C/r}$

Abstract:We analyse recent contradictory results and conclusions about the spectrum of the screened Coulomb potential $V(r)=-r^{-1}e^{-C/r}$. The well known Hellmann-Feynman theorem shows that all the bound states of the Coulomb potential ($C=0$) remain bounded as $C$ increases. We derive a simple approximate analytical expression for the eigenvalues for sufficiently small values of the screening parameter $C$ and an approximate asymptotic expression for the asymptotic behaviour of the s-state eigenvalues when $C\rightarrow \infty $. Present results are expected to resolve the discrepancy about the spectrum of the quantum-mechanical model just mentioned.
