Abstract:The MoS 2 incorporated into the 3D hierarchically N,S co‐doped carbon composites (MoS 2 @NSC) were prepared via a facile and scalable method by using the functional fluidic acrylonitrile telomer as carbon source and doping agent, and SiO 2 as hard templates. The optimal MoS 2 @NSC‐2 showed effective ORR catalytic activity with the initial potential of 0.93V and half‐potential of 0.82V in basic electrolyte. In addition, MoS 2 @NSC‐2 favored a four‐electron reduction process and demonstrated a superior durability and methanol tolerance, which could be ascribed to its unique porous structure that can effectively facilitate the transfer of electrolyte and O 2 molecules. The Mo‐N x species are form due to the doping of N atoms into the crystal lattice of MoS 2 , which can further enhanced ORR catalytic activity. Our work affords a forward‐looking strategy for designing the efficient and low‐cost ORR catalysts on a large scale.

Abstract:In most cases, layered transition metal dichalcogenides (LTMDs), containing metallic phases, show electrochemical behavior different from their semiconductor counterparts. Typically, two-dimensional layered metallic 1T-MoS2 demonstrates better electrocatalytic performance for water splitting compared to its 2H counterpart. However, the characteristics of low metallic phase concentration and poor stability limit its applications in some cases. Herein, we demonstrate a simple and efficient bottom-up wet-chemistry strategy for the large-scale synthesis of nanoscopic ultrathin Mo1–xWxS2 nanosheets with enlarged interlayer spacing and high metallic phase concentration. Our characterizations, including X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS), high-angle annular dark-fieldscanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that the metallic ultrathin ternary Mo1–xWxS2 nanosheets exhibited distorted metal–metal bonds and a tunable metallic phase concentration. As a proof of concept, this optimized catalyst, with the highest metallic phase concentration (greater than 90%), achieved a low overpotential of about–155 mV at a current density of –10 mA/cm2, a small Tafel slope of 67 mV/dec, and an increased turnover frequency (TOF) of 1.3 H2 per second at an overpotential of –300 mV (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)), highlighting the importance of the metallic phase. More importantly, this study can lead to a facile solvothermal route to prepare stable and high-metallicphase-concentration transition-metal-based two-dimensional materials for future applications.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) ultrathin nanosheets, as a well-known inorganic two dimensional (2D) material with a graphene-like structure, has attracted tremendous attention due to its unique microscopic and macroscopic properties brought by the confinement of charge and heat transfer upon the basal plane. However, as the prototype Mott-insulator, its relatively low conductivity and carrier concentration still greatly hamper its wide applications. Here, we developed a novel intralayer vanadium-doping strategy to produce semimetallic vanadium-doped MoS₂ (VMS) ultrathin nanosheets with less than five S-(V, Mo)-S atomic layers, as a new inorganic 2D material. By incorporation of intralayer vanadium atoms, fine regulation of intrinsic electrical properties within the pristine MoS₂ structure has been successfully realized, achieving semimetallic MoS₂-based 2D materials with tunable conductivity and higher carrier concentration for the first time. Benefiting from the enhanced in-plane conductivity, the improved carrier concentration as well as the shortened electron transfer paths, the semimetal-like VMS nanosheet have enhanced catalytic activity with an overpotential of 0.13 V and a smaller Tafel slope, exhibiting enhanced catalytic performance compared with that of a pure MoS₂ system. The intralayer doping in the 2D structure opens a new avenue in building highly efficient catalysts through the regulation of their intrinsic electrical properties, and also gives a new perspective for enlarging the design space of 2D materials.
Molybdenum‐doped Ordered L10‐PdZn Nanosheets for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis

Abstract:Abstract Ultrathin Pd‐based two‐dimensional (2D) nanosheets (NSs) with tunable physicochemical properties have emerged as promising candidate for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Unfortunately, structurally ordered Pd‐based NSs can be hardly prepared as high temperature annealing (>600°C) is necessary for disorder to order phase transition, making it a considerable challenge for morphology control. Herein, a new class of ultrathin structurally ordered Mo‐doped L10‐PdZn NSs with curved geometry and abundant defects/lattice distortions is reported as an efficient oxygen reduction electrocatalyst in alkaline solution. It is found that Mo(CO)6 serves as reducing agent and Mo source to generate the unique ordered 2D morphology, which leads to the significantly modified electronic structure. The developed L10‐Mo‐PdZn NSs exhibit excellent ORR mass activity of 2.6 A mgPd−1 at 0.9 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, 31.5 and 17.6 times higher than those of Pd/C and Pt/C, respectively, outperforming most of the reported Pd‐based ORR electrocatalsyts. Impressively, L10‐Mo‐PdZn NSs is extremely stable for ORR, with only 2.3% activity loss after 10 000 potential cycles. Density functional theory study suggests that ordered L10 structure and Mo doping can raise the vacancy formation energy of Pd atom and thus promote the ORR stability.
Oxygen Reduction Reaction Promoted by the Strong Coupling of MoS 2 and SnS

Abstract:Graphene-like molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) with unique catalytic features and chemical/electrochemical stability holds great potential as an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst, but the overall weak oxygen adsorption and low electron conductivity limit its catalytic activity. Herein, MoS2 strongly coupled with an oxophilic SnS heterostructure embedded in nitrogen-doped porous carbon sheets (MoS2-SnS/NPC) was developed. The coupled SnS can not only tune the electronic structure but also promote the oxygen molecule adsorption and activation. Moreover, NPC can enhance the electron transfer as well as the structural stability of the MoS2-SnS heterostructure without agglomeration. As expected, MoS2-SnS/NPC exhibited enhanced catalytic activity that is superior to those of MoS2/NPC and SnS/NPC along with good catalytic stability for ORR. As a cathode catalyst, a homemade zinc–air battery driven by MoS2-SnS/NPC showed considerable discharging performance superior to the one driven by a commercial Pt/C catalyst in terms of open-circuit voltage, peak power density, and specific capacity. Furthermore, a MoS2-SnS/NPC-based zinc–air battery displayed a stable charging and discharging voltage gap for 48 h without an expanding trend, suggesting a robust cycling performance and heralding promising application prospects. The rotating ring-disk electrode and in situ electrochemical Raman tests revealed that the ORR underwent a combined 2-electron and 4-electron associative mechanism on MoS2-SnS/NPC, and the improved catalytic activity came from the synergistic effect of MoS2, SnS, S vacancy, and porous carbon sheets. Abstract:Enhancing the efficiency of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) relies significantly on the development of low-cost but highly efficient catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In the present work, a specially structured two-dimensional layered material called Haeckelite (HL) MoS 2 is investigated as an electrocatalyst for ORR by using density functional theory (DFT). In order to further improve the ORR catalytic performance, transition metals (TMs = Mn, Ru, Rh and Os) are independently doped on the surface of HL-MoS 2 . The detailed calculation includes the TMs doping, O 2 molecule adsorption, electronic structure analysis, and Gibbs free energy comparison. The final results demonstrate that all TM/HL-MoS 2 systems exhibit metallic properties, especially Ru/HL-MoS 2 has the best catalytic performance for ORR in view of its moderate adsorption energy of O 2 molecule (≈ 0.57 eV) and the lowest overpotential (≈ 0.503 V). Therefore, the combination of defect structure and TMs doping in MoS 2 can be regarded as an effective approach to achieve both enhancement of catalytic performance and reduction of consumption of precious metals in the oxygen reduction reaction.

Abstract:Reasonable design and feasible preparation of low-cost and stable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts with excellent performance play a key role in the development of fuel cells and metal-air batteries. A 3D porous superimposed nanosheet catalyst composed of metal manganese covered with MnO2 nanofilms (P-NS-MnO2@Mn) was designed and synthesized by rotating disk electrodes (RDEs) through one-step electrodeposition. The catalyst contains no carbon material. Therefore, the oxidation and corrosion of the carbon material during use can be avoided, resulting in excellent stability. The structural and composition characterizations indicate that the nanosheets with sharp edges exist on the surface of the wall surrounding the macropore (diameter ∼ 5.07 μm) and they connect tightly. Both the nanosheets and the wall of the macropore are composed of metal manganese covered completely with MnO2 film with a thickness of less than 5 nm. The half-wave potential of the synthesized P-NS-MnO2@Mn catalyst is 0.86 V. Besides, the catalyst exhibits good stability with almost no decay after a 30 h chronoamperometric test. Finite element analysis (FEA) simulation reveals the high local electric field intensity surrounding the sharp edges of the nanosheets. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the novel nanosheet structure composed of MnO2 nanofilms covered on the surface of the Mn matrix accelerates the electronic transfer of the MnO2 nanofilms during the ORR process. The high local electric field intensity near the sharp edge of the nanosheets effectively promotes the orbital hybridization and strengthens the adsorbing Mn-O bond between the active site Mn in the nanosheets and the intermediate OOH* during the ORR process. This study provides a new strategy for preparing transition metal oxide catalysts and a novel idea about the key factors affecting the catalytic activity of transition metal oxides for the ORR.

Abstract:Transition metal sulfides are widely recognized as energy storage materials. An efficient and stable composite catalyst rGO-modified VS4 for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was synthesized by hydrothermal method. The structure, morphology, composition, and catalytic activity of the catalyst were detected by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electrochemical methods. The results show a strong bond cooperation between VS4 and rGO that is in favor of the transfer of electrons during the catalytic process. Therefore, the composite catalyst possesses superior ORR activity, methanol tolerance, and long-time durability. This work provides a useful exploration for the development of inexpensive, efficient, and stable alternative catalysts for Pt/C.

The hybrid concept provides a way to obtain enhanced ORR performance and long-term durability through an optimized metal oxide-support interaction. Herein, we synthesized a carbon nanotube (CNT)-graphene-alpha-MnO2 hybrid in a hydrothermal reaction in which the MnO2 nanosheets were deposited on the interior and exterior surfaces of the CNT channels. The resultant hybrid displayed very high ORR activity that is only marginally less than the performance of a commercial 20 wt% Pt/C catalyst and showed even better stability. The excellent ORR activity was attributed to two main factors, that is, the mesoporous architecture of the catalyst and the strong electron coupling between the encapsulated metal oxide and the support. We also showed that the preferential deposition of MnO2 nanosheets within the CNT channels provides enhanced ORR performance relative to deposition on the exterior surfaces of the channels only. This in turn demonstrates unequivocally the confinement effect that the CNT exerts on the encapsulated metal oxide component, which can be exploited as a route to enhanced ORR activity.

Abstract:Recently, atomically dispersed transition-metal single atom in nitrogen-doped carbon matrix as electrocatalysts has aroused general interest. However, there is no report about vanadium single atom for ORR in the literature. According to d-band center theory for transition-metals, the performance of catalysts is regulated by the electronic structure of the catalytic center which determines the intermediate adsorption kinetics. Indeed, the valence of vanadium is variable, its electron structure could be modulated by an appropriate coordination structure. Here, a novel method is developed to prepare the N and O co-coordinated vanadium single atom (V-N1O4) embedded in the carbon matrix. The catalyst displays a half-wave potential of 865mV in base solution which surpasses 20% Pt/C, and also shows a high power density of 180 mW/cm2 in Zn-air batteries. DFT calculations reveal that the N and O coordination configuration could regulate the electron structure and geometry of vanadium to boost the electrocatalytic activity.

Abstract:The catalysts towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are the key materials for fuel cells and have stimulated continuous investigations on rational designs. Apart from the popular strategies reported, we demonstrate here a facile method resulting in a nanocomposite composed of molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) nanoparticles embedded and buried in Fe-N-doped carbon nanolayers by directly pyrolyzing the mixture of Fe2(MoO4)3 and dicyandiamide. The underlying Mo2C donates electrons of higher energy to the exterior N-containing carbon nanolayers (NC) and strongly couples with the active sites induced by Fe in the NC layer, leading to significant improvement at half-wave potential with respect to the control sample without Mo2C. The catalyst as a whole exhibits a fairly good ORR performance comparable to commercial Pt/C. Moreover, the method is extremely simplified and the material shows better long-term stability and tolerance to the methanol crossover in comparison with Pt/C.

Abstract:A creative hydrothermal synthesis method followed by calcination for vanadium nitride (VN) is reported. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) study of the catalyst shows that VN possesses a comparable catalytic performance to commercial Pt/C catalyst. The ORR catalytic activity study of vanadium nitride, vanadium carbonitride, and vanadium carbide reveals that tuning anions offers a promising route for the activity enhancement of the non-precious metal catalysts.

Activated Single‐Phase Ti4O7 Nanosheets with Efficient Use of Precious Metal for Inspired Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is central to modern energy storage and conversion technologies for grids such as fuel cells and electrolyzers, but challenges remain due to the lack of reliable, economic, and durable electrocatalysts. Here, we develop single-crystal conductive black titanium (Ti4O7) nanosheets (NSs) as a new precious metal carrier based on sacrificial hard templates and ultrasonic-assisted peeling, and deposit Pt clusters on Ti4O7 NSs induced by wetness impregnation under the irradiation of visible light (VI; 650 nm). Pt/Ti4O7 NSs provide Ti3+, Pt2+, and Pt0+ continuous active sites for the ORR multielectron process, achieving synergy among them. The assistance of visible light not only makes a more uniform and smaller distribution of Pt nanoclusters, but also strengthens the charge transfer, thereby constructing a strong metal-support interaction interface. VI-Pt/Ti4O7 NSs show superior initial oxidation potential and a mass activity of 1.61 A mg(Pt)(-1) at a E-1/2=0.91 V, which is nine times higher than that of commercial Pt/C. This work provides an effective strategy for achieving high-value applications of titanium sub-oxides and further explores the enhanced interface in metals TinO2n-1 by light radiation.

Abstract:The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is one of the significant catalytic reactions of fuel cells. To date, platinum-based metals are considered the most promising ORR electrocatalysts, but they still have problems such as high price and poor sustainability. Tungsten/molybdenum-based group VIB materials are potential substitutes for Pt thanks to their relatively abundant resources and similar electronic structure to that of Pt. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding and timely reference to recent advances in W/Mo-based group VIB electrocatalysts in the field of the ORR. First of all, we discuss the basic principles of the ORR, the synthesis of W/Mo-based electrocatalysts and performance test methods. Secondly, the synthesis strategy for high-performance W/Mo-based electrocatalysts is discussed. Then, progress in research on W/Mo-based catalysts in recent years is reviewed, focusing on W/Mo-based heteroatom doped, single atom, and compound (carbide, nitride, sulfide, oxide) electrocatalysts. Finally, development prospects and challenges for W/Mo-based electrocatalysts are discussed.

Abstract:Manganese dioxide (MnO2) represents a promising oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalyst, but its catalytic activity is largely limited by the essentially low electronic conductivity and large geometric size. Herein, hierarchical ε-MnO2 nanosheets (MnO2-H) strongly coupled with silver nanoparticle spheres (Ag NPs) were developed. The introduced Ag NPs can not only enhance the electronic transfer but also tune the electronic structure of MnO2 and act as active sites for ORR. Owing to the large electrochemically active surface area, good mass/electronic transfer, and a strong coupled interface between MnO2-H and Ag NPs, the optimal Ag-MnO2-H-1.53 showed much higher catalytic activity than MnO2-H, Ag microparticles, and commercial Pt/C catalyst for ORR. Moreover, Ag-MnO2-H-1.53 displayed robust catalytic stability with negligible shift in the half-wave potential after 5000 cycles. As a cathode catalyst, a homemade zinc–air battery (ZAB) based on Ag-MnO2-H-1.53 showed a high open circuit voltage (1.52 V), maximum peak power density (120.2 mW/cm2), and specific capacity (646 mAh/g) superior to those of Pt/C-based ZAB (1.48 V, 82.3 mW/cm2, and 612 mAh/g), along with a long lifetime. Abstract:A high-efficiency and stable electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is critical for fuel cells. Here we report a new type of ORR catalyst composed of platinum nanocrystals loaded on nitrogen-doped graphene-vanadium carbide (VC) hybrids. This is the first report on using graphene oxide as the carbon source in the synthesis of transition-metal carbides as ORR catalysts; the electrochemical tests and theoretical modeling prove that the N-doping in both VC and graphene could effectively improve the overall catalytic activity. The catalytic performance of the hybrids in alkaline solutions is superior to that of commercial Pt/C catalysts in terms of the oxygen-reduction half-wave potential and the mass activity. The stability study of the catalyst also shows less degradation in catalytic activity after 3000 cycles compared with Pt/C and the hybrid catalyst structure remains virtually unchanged. Therefore, using inexpensive hybrids of high-conductivity nitrogen-doped transition-metal carbides and nanocarbon as the catalyst support presents a new direction to optimize catalyst performance for next-generation fuel cells.

Abstract:For the alkaline fuel cell cathode reaction, it is very essential to develop novel catalysts with superior catalytic properties. Here, we report the synthesis of highly active and stable MoS2/Pd composites for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), via a simple, eco-friendly sonochemical method. The bulk MoS2 was first transformed into single and few layers MoS2 nanosheets through ultrasonic exfoliation. Then the exfoliated MoS2 nanosheets served as supporting materials for the nucleation and further in-situ growth of Pd nanoparticles to form MoS2/Pd composites via ultrasonic irradiation. Cyclic voltammetry and rotating disk voltammetry measurements demonstrate that as-prepared MoS2/Pd composites which provides a direct four-electron pathway for the ORR, have better electrocatalytic activity, long-term operation stability than commercial Pt/C catalyst. We expect that the present work would provide a promising strategy for the development of efficient oxygen reduction electrocatalyst. In addition, this study can also be extended to the preparation of other hybrid with desirable morphologies and functions.
Integrated Three-Dimensional Carbon Nanopolyhedron/Metal Sulfides: An Efficient Electrocatalyst Toward Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Carbon-based materials hybridized with metal sulfides have gained growing attention as catalytic materials for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to their synergistic effects in terms of richer structural features and higher electrochemical activities. Here, a series of Zn/Co/Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as the precursors, which can be adopted as efficient ORR catalysts, were synthesized through a sulfuration–calcination treatment. The effects of precursor composition, heteroatom doping, and pyrolysis temperature on the structure and electrochemical performance of the catalysts were discussed in detail. It is found that well-grown carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the surface of graphitic carbon matrix are formed under the synergy effect of trimetallic-based species during pyrolysis. Benefiting from the three-dimensional unique structure with appropriate dopants and high porosity, the catalyst derived from the optimized Zn/Co/Fe-MOFs achieves a half-wave potential of 0.87 V in an alkaline medium for ORR, which is comparable with commercial electrocatalysts. In addition, an outstanding ORR durability of the proposed catalyst in alkaline media was also demonstrated. This work highlights the potential to rationally design and fabricate high-performance ORR catalysts for commercialization.

Abstract:Molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) with unique Pt-like electronic structure displays promising electrocatalysis for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the oxygen adsorption of Mo2C is overly strong for boosted catalytic activity. Herein, this work developed a bidirectional electronegative heteroatom doping strategy to tune the electronic cloud density of Mo2C. Boron and nitrogen, which have different electronegativities compared to Mo, co-doped nano-Mo2C moieties embedded in a nanoporous nitrogen-doped carbon frame (B,N-Mo2C/NPNC) were synthesized via a cross-linking–pyrolysis process. The introduced B not only tailored the electronic structure of Mo2C but also created additional electron-deficient B active sites for ORR. Additionally, the unique nanoporous carbon structure with dominant nanochannels benefits the exposure of specific surface areas and fast mass transfer. As a result, compared to N-Mo2C/NPNC without B tuning, B,N-Mo2C/NPNC exhibited superior ORR catalytic activity comparable to commercial Pt/C catalysts, making it outstanding among the Mo-based ORR catalysts. Moreover, B,N-Mo2C/NPNC showed robust catalytic stability for ORR with little shift in half-wave potential even after 10,000 cycles. As a cathode catalyst, a B,N-Mo2C/NPNC-driven zinc-air battery displayed discharge performance superior to the Pt/C-driven one, heralding promising application prospects.
