Abstract:Benzene-cored luminogens with multiple triarylvinyl units are designed and synthesized. These propeller-shaped molecules are nonemissive when dissolved in good solvents, but become highly emissive when aggregated in poor solvents or in the solid state, showing the novel phenomenon of aggregation-induced emission. Restriction of intramolecular motion is identified as the main cause for this effect. Thanks to their high solid-state fluorescence quantum yields (up to unity) and high thermal and morphological stabilities, light-emitting diodes with the luminogens as emitters give sky-blue to greenish-blue light in high luminance and efficiencies of 10800 cd m-2, 5.8 cd A-1, and 2.7%, respectively. The emissions of the nanoaggregates of the luminogens can be quenched exponentially by picric acid, or selectively by Ru3+, with quenching constants up to 105 and similar to 2.0 x 105 L mol-1, respectively, making them highly sensitive (and selective) chemosensors for explosives and metal ions.

Abstract:Molecular motions significantly influence the emissive behavior and properties of organic fluorescent molecules. However, achieving controllable emission remains a major challenge for fluorophores. In the case of aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens), the desired properties of aggregated emission and narrowband spectrum demand molecular motion patterns that inherently oppose each other. A nitrogen-containing dicyclopenta[,]naphthalene scaffold was discovered as a controllable luminogenic structure through a highly efficient one-step intermolecular cascade reaction. By carefully balancing molecular motions and introducing additional nitrogen atoms into the skeleton, pyrrole-conjugated dicyclopenta[,]naphthalenes with aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) could be transformed into dual-state emission luminogens (DSEgens). This transformation was achieved by incorporating an additional weak H-bond "lock." Furthermore, the DSEgens could be converted into AIEgens with an exciting narrow full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM, <50 nm) by methylation. This unprecedented discovery is attributed to the contribution of the weak H-bond "lock," which overcomes the limitations of broad band emission in AIEgens caused by restrictions of intramolecular motion. Specific organelle probes were developed by replacing the methyl group of the onium product with different positioning groups. This study emphasizes the delicate balance of molecular motions in controlling luminescence and demonstrates a successful approach to designing organic luminogens with controllable emission and narrowband AIEgens.

Abstract:Aggregation generally quenches the light emissions of chromophoric molecules. In this review, we demonstrate that 1,1-disubstituted 2,3,4,5-tetraphenyl siloles and 2,5-difunctionalized siloles as well as their polymers exhibit the opposite behaviors. Instead of quenching, aggregation has greatly boosted their photoluminescence quantum yields by up to two orders of magnitude, turning them from faint fluorophores into strong emitters. Such “abnormal” phenomenon of “aggregation-induced emission (AIE)” is attributed to restricted intramolecular rotations of the peripheral phenyl rings against the central silole core, which block the nonradiative channel via the rotational energy relaxation processes and effectively populate the radiative decay of the excitons. Utilizing such a novel effect, siloles and their polymers find an array of applications as: sensors for chemicals, explosives, pH, and biomacromolecules (proteins, DNAs and RNAs), indicators for determining CMC and monitoring layer-by-layer self-assembling, biocompatible fluorogens for cell imaging, visualizing agent for DNA gel electrophoresis, biolabels for immunoassay, stimuli-responsive organic nanomaterials, magnetic fluorescent nanoparticles for potential bio-imaging and -separation, and outstanding materials for efficient OLEDs and PV cells.

Abstract:The stimuli-responsive luminescence property plays a crucial role in the development of mechanoluminescent materials. Here, we designed and synthesized four o -carborane-based aggregation-induced emission molecules, two of which, CB-Ph-P and CB-Ph-PAn , exhibited multiple solid-state fluorescence emissions. Upon mechanical stimulation, the recrystallization solid of CB-Ph-P caused a bathochromic shift in its fluorescence emission from 423 nm to 608 nm. Similarly, CB-Ph-PAn exhibits a transition in fluorescence emission wavelength from 393 nm to 623 nm when in the solid state. In order to gain insight into the mechanism behind their luminescent behavior, we performed analyses including powder X-ray diffraction, photophysical properties, thermal properties, and single-crystal structure analysis. It is deemed that the polymorphism may be related to different weak interactions, packing modes and torsion angles.

Abstract:Highly efficient and stimuli-responsive luminescent materials are desirable candidates in various applications. In this work a bis(naphthyl)phenyl-substituted o-carborane (1) was synthesized by a Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. The X-ray crystal structure analysis indicates multiple weak interactions (intermolecular C-H⋯π, intramolecular C-H⋯H-B, and intermolecular B-H⋯π hydrogen bonding interactions) are present which may explain the high solid state emission efficiency (0.99). Compound 1 exhibits multiple fluorochromism towards mechanical force, solvent vapor and temperature, which holds promise for further application studies. The emission mechanism is mainly the intramolecular charge transfer induced by the electron-withdrawing carborane as supported by the TD-DFT calculations.
Remote Effect from Boron Cluster: Tunable Photophysical Properties of O-Carborane-based Luminogens.

Abstract:We proposed a new molecular design strategy that the o-carboranyl group is attached as "an innocent unit" to the remote side of luminogens to tune photophysical properties. To verify this strategy, two o-carborane-based compounds with asymmetric molecular geometry were designed and synthesized. Photophysical properties of o-carborane-based luminogens were investigated on the basis of UV-Vis spectra, photoluminescence spectra, crystal structure analysis and theoretical calculations. The results indicate that the o-carboranyl group has a slight effect on the energy gap between the ground state (S0 ) and the first excited state (S1 ) in the solution state but a significant effect on the energy gap between S0 and S1 in the solid state. Besides, the radiative and non-radiative transition processes are modulated by the o-carboranyl unit. This leads to emission quenching in the solution state but an enhanced luminous efficiency in the aggregate state with a typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property.

Abstract:Tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-carborane hybrids are constructed, and the impact of carborane substituents on the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics of TPE-cores has been investigated. When altering the 2-R-group on the carborane unit with -H, -CH3 or phenyl group, the luminescent quantum yield of the corresponding TPE derivatives can be manipulated from 0.18 to 0.63 in the solid state. The emission color exhibits an obvious 100nm shift (from blue to yellow).

Abstract:Molecular vibrations endow the o‐carborane‐based molecule with conformation‐dependent emissions, which are accompanied by the chance of space charge transfer and bond charge transfer, having molecular orbitals breaking from π–π to π–σ mode. As a result, the corresponding ordered aggregates exhibit intense circularly polarized luminescence. Photothermal modulated excited conformations in traditional optoelectronic materials have been extensively investigated for the manipulation of emissive properties. However, photoinduced molecular synergetic conformational changes, which are promising for controlling intramolecular energy transfer modes through molecular orbital breaking, are never been explored. Herein, a novel o‐carborane dyad composed of carbazole units as electron donors and triazine derivatives as electron acceptors is demonstrated to achieve conformation‐dependent emissions and abundant emissions via synergetic conformational changes. Notably, the resulting dyad exhibited multiple conformational changes that induced emissions through different energy transfer modes involved "through space" and "through bond." Exactly, the electron spin from singlet to triplet state took a flip accompanied by molecular orbitals from π–π molecular orbitals in the space charge transfer style to π and σ molecular orbitals in the bond charge transfer mode. The circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties are systematically investigated, exhibiting intense CPL with large glum values. These results provide novel perspectives for elucidating the complicated emission changes in aggregated states, as well as unique perspectives on the relationship between molecular conformations, energy transfer modes, and molecular orbital breaking.

Abstract:The weakly coordinating cluster [CB11 H12 ]- is used as a versatile building block for the preparation of luminescent copper(I) complexes. Treatment of [CB11 H11 -12-C≡CH]- with CuI and ammonia affords {(CB11 H11 -12-C≡C)2 Cu4 (NH3 )3 }n (2). Addition of selected phosphine and pyridine ligands transforms 2 to a range of homometallic products 3-13. All compounds have been characterized by X-ray crystallography, which reveals a surprising variety of structural complexity featuring cores with two to ten Cu+ centers. In the solid state, products 3-13 exhibit room-temperature phosphorescence across the visible spectrum in colors from blue to deep red. Lifetimes at room temperature are in the microsecond regime, and quantum yields of up to Φ=0.99 are observed.

Abstract:N-type pyrazine-based 1,4- and 1,5-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazole derivatives, showing unique aggregation-enhanced emission characteristics, were facilely prepared via Cu- and Ru-catalysed azide-alkyne cycloadditions, respectively. Thanks to their electron-deficient properties, they could readily form red-emissive charge transfer complexes with electron-donating triphenylamine in the aggregate and solid states.

Abstract:Nitrogen-containing heterocyclic pyrazine luminogens with "free" (1) and "locked" (2) phenyl rings were readily prepared in high yields. The propeller-shaped luminogen 1 shows aggregation-induced emission feature, whereas the disk-shaped chromophore 2 shows conventional aggregation-caused quenching effect, offering a direct evidence to support our hypothesis that restriction of intramolecular rotation is the main cause for the AIE phenomenon.

Abstract:Three carbazole-containing isocyano-bridged mononuclear gold(I) complexes with different substituents are reported. The complexes display an aggregate luminescence change effect involving a color change from blue to yellow-green. In the solid state, luminogens 1-3 exhibit varying room-temperature phosphorescence involving blue, light yellow, and yellow emissions. In contrast, at 77 K, the gold(I) phosphors 1-3 display stronger (blue-green or yellow-green depending on the phosphor) phosphorescence with longer luminescence lifetimes. In addition, the solid-state phosphorescence of 1-3 is adjusted by moderate mechanical stimulus. More specifically, phosphor 1 shows reversible high-contrast mechanoluminochmmic behavior involving interconversion between blue and yellow-green luminescence and phosphor 2 shows reversible mechanoluminochromism phenomenon involving luminescent interconversion between light yellow and light green. In contrast, solid-state phosphor 3 displays an irreversible mechanoluminochromism phenomenon-a strong yellow-green luminescence is observed after grinding. Subsequent treatment with dichloromethane vapor results in a blue-emitting sample.

Abstract:It is of interest to fine tune the luminescence properties of organic luminophores by using the three-dimensional carborane cluster. In this work, o-carborane-tetraphenylethene compounds 1-4 with a short CH(OH) linker have been synthesized via the reactions of o-carborane and tetraphenylethene-based aldehydes in the presence of tetrabutylammonium fluoride, and their structures, luminescence and stimuli-responsive properties investigated. As expected, the products show aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties due to the typical AIE-active tetraphenylethene (TPE) moiety. The carborane and hydroxyl group on the linker have great effects on the solid state structures and properties of the products. The emission maxima of the compounds (1: 426, 2: 437, 3: 440, 4: 445 nm) are essentially the same as that of the parent TPE (439-445 nm) in solid state, whereas all the carborane-TPEs reported show red-shifted emissions (452-678 nm), and the luminescence quantum yields (1: 0.25, 2: 0.17, 3: 0.32, 4: 0.30) are relatively higher than that of TPE (0.23). In addition, 1-4 show mechano- and thermofluorochromic properties. The silica gel composites of 1-4 exhibit higher luminescence thermal stability, with the T50% (the temperature at which the luminescence intensity reaches 50% of that at low temperature) being greater than 120 oC, higher than the solid samples and the silica gel composite of TPE. These results indicate that carborane and suitable linker could play a unique role in precisely regulating the emitting properties of TPE-type compounds.

Abstract:A series of novel carbazole-based mono- and dinuclear gold(I) complexes with various lengths of alkyl chains were synthesized and characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffractometry. Their aggregation-induced emission characteristics were investigated by ultraviolet/visible and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Their solid-state mechanochromic luminescence behavior was also studied by photoluminescence spectroscopy. All gold(I) complexes based on a carbazole scaffold structure exhibited excellent aggregation-induced emission properties. Luminogens 1 and 2 showed reversible mechanochromism phenomena involving luminescent color transformation from yellow–green to green. Luminogens 3 and 4 exhibited switchable mechanochromic luminescence behavior involving fluorescent color change from colorless to green. The solid-state fluorescence of luminogens 5 and 6 can be switched between weak and strong fluorescence by mechanical force stimulus, and this conversion is irreversible.

Abstract:Three new carbazole-based fluorescent molecules 1–3 functionalized with tetraphenylethene have been successfully synthesized, and these compounds have high thermal stability, and they exhibited different fluorescence in solid states with the superior luminescence quantum yields of 99.04% (1), 98.90% (2) and 39.83% (3). Their aggregation-induced behaviors were explored by the study of photoluminescence spectroscopy. The results showed that luminogens 1–3 exhibited remarkable aggregation-induced emission effect. Furthermore, their distinct mechanical stimulus-responsive fluorescence characteristics were also surveyed by solid-state photoluminescence spectroscopy. Interestingly, the various emitting colors of these luminogens could be changed into the same green, and the repeatabilities of their mechanochromic luminescence behaviors were outstanding, and the powder X-ray diffraction results indicated that the reversible conversion from a crystalline to an amorphous state was responsible for the obvious mechanofluorochromism phenomena of compounds 1–3. This work will be valuable for the exploitation of mechanical-force sensors with typical aggregation-induced emission feature.
3-Aroylbenzocoumarin-Based Luminogens: Bright Solid-State Emission, AIE Properties and Cell Imaging Application

Abstract:A series of 3-aroylbenzocoumarin-based luminogens have been synthesized for investigating their aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and solid-state fluorescence. The single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of one of them showed that the molecules are arranged in the form of π-dimers which may lead to excimer emission. The large Stokes shifts and the broad-band emission of these 3-aroylbenzocoumarins in solid/aggregation state demonstrated the probable formation of excimers. The shapes of benzocoumarin units have a great effect on the AIE behaviors. The linear benzocoumarin derivatives show larger Stokes shifts, while the bent-benzocoumarin derivatives exhibit better AIE performances. All of them show aggregation-enhanced excimer emission which is supported by the large Stokes shifts. The electronic effect of 3-aroyl groups also has a certain effect on their fluorescence properties. The polymorphism phenomenon was observed for one of the benzoyl-containing derivatives. Additionally, two of the derivatives containing methoxy group were successfully used for cell imaging.

Aggregation-Induced Electrochemiluminescence of Carboranyl Carbazoles in Aqueous Media

Abstract:The aggregation-induced electrochemiluminescence (AIECL) of carboranyl carbazoles in aqueous media was investigated for the first time. Quantum yields, morphologies, and particle sizes were observed to determine the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) performance of these aggregated organic dots (ODs). All compounds exhibit much higher ECL stability and intensity than the carborane-free compound, demonstrating the essential role of the carboranyl motif. Moreover, the results of cyclic voltammetry (CV) suggest that oxidation/reduction reactions take place at the carboranyl motif. The excited states of ODs were proposed to be generated by the mechanism of surface state transitions. More importantly, these compounds show a reductive-oxidative mechanism in contrast to other organic materials that show oxidative-reductive mechanisms. Our experiments and data have established the relation between AIE organic structures and ECL properties that has a strong potential for biological and diagnostic applications.

Abstract:The construction of multi-functionalized luminophores with full-color emission based on the same core skeleton is an appealing yet significantly challenging task. In this work, we rationally designed and facilely constructed a series of donor-donor-acceptor (D-D-A) based luminogens by representative Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. Using electron-donating carbazole with hexyl chain as basic core structure, a series of donor-donor-acceptor (D-D-A) typed luminogens with different donor and acceptor units were designed and synthesized. Some compounds showed AIEE or aggregate fluorescence change behaviors due to TICT and RIM. Among them, these compounds displayed diverse mechanofluorochromic characteristics, including reversible or irreversible, red-shifted or blue-shifted mechanofluorochromisms. This provided new ideas for the development of multifunctional organic light-emitting molecules.
