Abstract:Based on the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry, chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) is believed to approximate confinement scale QCD. Dedicated and increasingly accurate experiments and improving lattice calculations are confirming this belief, and we are entering a new era in which we can test confinement scale QCD in some well chosen reactions. This is demonstrated with an overview of low energy experimental tests of ChPT predictions of $\pi\pi$ scattering, pion properties, $\pi$N scattering and electromagnetic pion production. These predictions have been shown to be consistent with QCD in the meson sector by increasingly accurate lattice calculations. At present there is good agreement between experiment and ChPT calculations, including the $\pi\pi$ and $\pi$N s wave scattering lengths and the $\pi^{0}$ lifetime. Recent, accurate pionic atom data are in agreement with chiral calculations once isospin breaking effects due to the mass difference of the up and down quarks are taken into account, as was required to extract the $\pi\pi$ scattering lengths. In addition to tests of the theory, comparisons between $\pi\pi$ and $\pi$N interactions based on general chiral principles are discussed. Lattice calculations are now providing results for the fundamental, long and inconclusively studied, $\pi$N $\sigma$ term and the contribution of the strange quark to the mass of the proton. Increasingly accurate experiments in electromagnetic pion production experiments from the proton which test ChPT calculations (and their energy region of validity) are presented. These experiments are also beginning to measure the final state $\pi$N interaction. This paper is based on the concluding remarks made at the Chiral Dynamics Workshop CD12 held at Jefferson Lab in Aug. 2012.

Theoretical understanding of pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions - a status report

Abstract:A status report is given for the current theoretical understanding of pion production close to threshold. In the first part of the talk predictions of a meson exchange model are compared to recent polarized data for the reactions $pp \to pp\pi^0$ as well as $pp\to pn\pi^+$ revealing, that the former reaction is badly described whereas the predictions for the latter turn out to be consistent with the data. Recent progress in the application of chiral perturbation theory allows to understand this difference.

Abstract:An outstanding problem in the study of possible kaon condensation is the striking discrepancy between the results of chiral perturbation theory and those of the PCAC-plus-current-algebra approach. I discuss here what causes this discrepancy and what needs to be done to solve the problem. In addition, I point out the importance of examining the validity of the non-relativistic approximation universally employed in the existing treatments of kaon condensation.

Abstract:Chiral symmetry and its spontaneous breaking play an important role both in the light hadron and heavy hadron systems. The chiral perturbation theory (L PT) is the low energy effective field theory of the Quantum Chromodynamics. In this work, we shall review the investigations on the chiral corrections to the properties of the heavy mesons and baryons within the framework of L PT. We will also review the scatterings of the light pseudoscalar mesons and heavy hadrons, through which many new resonances such as the D*s0(2317) could be understood.Moreover, many new hadron states were observed experimentally in the past decades. A large group of these states is near-threshold resonances, such as the charged charmoniumlike Zc and Zcs states, bottomoniumlike Zb states, hidden-charm pentaquark Pc and Pcs states and the doubly charmed Tcc state, etc. They are very good candidates of the loosely bound molecular states composed of a pair of charmed (bottom) hadrons, which are very similar to the loosely bound deuteron. The modern nuclear force was built upon the chiral effective field theory (LEFT), which is the extension of the L PT to the systems with two matter fields. The long-range and medium-long-range interactions between two nucleons arise from the single-and double-pion exchange respectively, which are well constrained by the chiral symmetry and its spontaneous breaking. The short-distance interactions can be described by the low energy constants. Such a framework works very well for the nucleon-nucleon scattering and nuclei. In this work, we will perform an extensive review of the progress on the heavy hadronic molecular states within the framework of LEFT. We shall emphasize that the same chiral dynamics not only govern the nuclei and forms the deuteron, but also dictates the shallow bound states or resonances composed of two heavy hadrons.& COPY; 2023 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:In this talk I present recent developments in chiral dynamics of hadrons and hadrons in a medium addressing the following points: interaction of the octet of pseudoscalar mesons with the octet of baryons of the nucleon, showing recent experimental evidence on the existence of two Λ(1405) states, the interaction of the octet of pseudoscalar mesons with the decuplet of baryons of the Δ, with particular emphasis on the Λ(1520) resonance, dynamically generated by this interaction. Then I review the interaction of kaons in a nuclear medium and briefly discuss the situation around the claims of deeply bound states in nuclei. The large renormalization of the Λ(1520) in the nuclear medium is shown as another example of successful application of the chiral unitary techniques.

Abstract:Charm and bottom mesons and baryons are incorporated into a low energy chiral Lagrangian. Interactions of the heavy hadrons with light octet Goldstone bosons are studied in a framework which represents a synthesis of chiral perturbation theory and the heavy quark effective theory. The differential decay rate for the semileptonic process $\LBzero \to \Sigma_c^{++} + e^- + \bar{\nu}_e + \pi^-$ is calculated at the zero recoil point using this hybrid formalism.

Chiral perturbation theory with vector mesons and the pion form factors

Abstract:The chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) of pions is extended to include vector mesons as well as pertinent degrees of freedom. By counting the typical momentum scale of vector mesons as order of $Q$ and vector meson masses as of the order of $\Lambda_\chi$, a consistent theory could be obtained. The explicit renormalization procedure of the theory is presented for the form factors of the pion up to one-loop accuracy. The resulting theory prediction for the form factors is in good agreement with the experimental data for a wide range of momentum transfers. The vector-meson dominance mechanism is also discussed in the systematic framework of ChPT.

Abstract:Observations reveal an increase with height of the line width of several coronal spectral lines probably caused by outwardly propagating Alfv{é}n waves. However, the spectral line width sometimes shows a sudden decrease at a height 0.1-0.2 R, where the ratio of sound to Alfven speeds may approach unity. Qualitative analysis shows that the resonant energy conversion from Alfven to acoustic waves near the region of the corona where the plasma $\beta$ approaches unity may explain the observed spectral line width reduction.

Non-perturbative Chiral Corrections for Lattice QCD

Abstract:We explore the chiral aspects of extrapolation of observables calculated within lattice QCD, using the nucleon magnetic moments as an example. Our analysis shows that the biggest effects of chiral dynamics occur for quark masses corresponding to a pion mass below 600 MeV. In this limited range chiral perturbation theory is not rapidly convergent, but we can develop some understanding of the behaviour through chiral quark models. This model dependent analysis leads us to a simple Pad\'e approximant which builds in both the limits $m_\pi \to 0$ and $m_\pi \to \infty$ correctly and permits a consistent, model independent extrapolation to the physical pion mass which should be extremely reliable.
Elastic pion-nucleon scattering in chiral perturbation theory: Explicit $Δ$(1232) degrees of freedom

Abstract:For the first time, elastic pion-nucleon scattering is analyzed in the framework of chiral perturbation theory up to fourth order with explicit $\Delta$ degrees of freedom. The analysis is performed within the heavy-baryon expansion as well as in a covariant approach based on an extended on-mass-shell renormalization scheme. The renormalization of low-energy constants in both chiral approaches is discussed in detail and the explicit expressions to cancel both power-counting breaking as well as decoupling breaking terms are given. The low-energy constants from the $2\pi \bar{N}N$ interaction as well as additional constants from the $\Delta$ sector are reliably constrained by fits to experimental data. The traditional $K$-matrix unitarization is employed in the near threshold region, whereas a complex mass approach is used to extend the applicability of the theory up to the $\Delta$ pole region. Additionally, we estimate a theoretical error based on the truncation of the chiral series as employed in recent analyses of nuclear forces as well as pion-nucleon scattering. The obtained results provide a clear evidence that the explicit inclusion of $\Delta$ degrees of freedom is fundamental to describe pion-nucleon physics at threshold. The resulting predictions for the subthreshold and threshold parameters as well as phase shifts are in excellent agreement with the ones determined by the recent Roy-Steiner analysis of pion-nucleon scattering.

Recent advances in chiral EFT based nuclear forces and their applications

Abstract:During the past two decades, chiral effective field theory has evolved into a powerful tool to derive nuclear forces from first principles. Nearly all two-nucleon interactions have been worked out up to sixth order of chiral perturbation theory, while, with few exceptions, three-nucleon forces, which play a subtle, but crucial role in microscopic nuclear structure calculations, have been derived up to fifth order. We review the current status of these forces as well as their applications in nuclear many-body systems. While the ab initio description of light nuclei is generally very successful, we point out and analyze problems encountered with medium-mass nuclei. We also survey the construction of equations of state for symmetric nuclear matter and neutron-rich matter based on chiral forces. A focal point is the symmetry energy and its impact on neutron skins and systems of astrophysical relevance. The physics of neutron-rich systems, from nuclei to compact stars, is essentially determined by the density dependence of the symmetry energy. We review the status of predictions in comparison with latest empirical constraints, with particular attention to those extracted from parity violating electron scattering.

Abstract:Disoriented Chiral Condensates (DCC) have been predicted to form in high energy heavy ion collisions where the approximate chiral symmetry of QCD has been restored. This leads to large imbalances in the production of charged to neutral pions. Sophisticated analysis methods are being developed to disentangle DCC events out of the large background of events with conventionally produced particles. We present a short review of current analysis methods and future prospects.

Probing nonperturbative transverse momentum dependent PDFs with chiral perturbation theory: the $\bar{d}-\bar{u}$ asymmetry

Abstract:We use chiral perturbation theory to study the long distance regime of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMD PDFs). Chiral corrections to the TMD PDFs are computed from proton to pion/baryon splittings. For consistent power counting, we find that the fraction of the proton's momentum that a pion may carry must be kept small. We make predictions for a $\bar{d}-\bar{u}$ asymmetry in the proton's TMD PDFs and find that the effective theory gives a natural exponential suppression of the TMD PDF at long distances. We then explore the effects that additional nonperturbative physics may have on the TMD $\bar{d}-\bar{u}$ asymmetry.

A Study of the Parity-Odd Nucleon-Nucleon Potential

Abstract:We investigate the parity-violating nucleon-nucleon potential as obtained in chiral effective field theory. By using resonance saturation we compare the chiral potential to the more traditional one-meson-exchange potential. In particular, we show how parameters appearing in the different approaches can be compared with each other and demonstrate that analyses of parity violation in proton-proton scattering within the different approaches are in good agreement. In the second part of this work, we extend the parity-violating potential to next-to-next-to-leading order. We show that generally it includes both one-pion- and two-pion-exchange corrections, but the former play no significant role. The two-pion-exchange corrections depend on five new low-energy constants which only become important if the leading-order weak pion-nucleon constant h π turns out to be very small.
Chiral perturbation theory and Bose-Einstein condensation in QCD

Abstract:We present recent results in three-flavor chiral perturbation theory at finite isospin $\mu_I$ and strangeness $\mu_s$ chemical potentials at zero temperature. The phase diagram to ${\cal O}(p^2)$ in the $\mu_I$--$\mu_S$ plane is mapped out with and without electromagnetic effects. The phase diagram consists of a vacuum phase and three Bose-condensed phases with condensates of $\pi^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, and $K^{0}/\bar{K}^0$, respectively. Including electromagnetic interactions, the Bose-condensed phases become Higgs phases via the Higgs mechanism. The tree-level spectrum for the mesons and gauge bosons is also derived. We calculate the pressure, energy density, isospin density, and speed of sound in the pion-condensed phase to ${\cal O}(p^4)$ for three-flavor $\chi$PT. The results are compared with recent lattice simulations and the agreement is very good for isospin chemical potentials up to approximately 200 MeV. Moreover, by integrating out the $s$-quark, we show that the thermodynamic quantities can be mapped onto their two-flavor counterparts with renormalized parameters. %to ${\cal O}(p^6)$ for two-flavor $\chi$PT in the chiral limit. We also consider the nonrelativistic limit. It is shown that the energy density can be matched onto the classic result by Lee, Huang and Yang (LHY) for a dilute Bose, with an $s$-wave scattering length that includes radiative corrections. The breaking of the $U(1)$ symmetry in the Bose-condensed phases gives rise to a Goldstone bosons, whose dispersion is linear for momenta $p\ll\mu_I$. In this regime, we use Son's prescription to construct an effective theory for the Goldstone field which is valid in this regime. It is shown that its damping rate is of order $p^5$. This result is in agreement with Beliav's for a dilute Bose gas.

Abstract:I discuss recent developments on non-leptonic and radiative kaon decays mainly related to direct CP-violation within the combined ChPT and 1/N_c expansion approaches. In particular, I review the status of K -> pi pi, epsilon_K', direct CP-violating K+ -> 3 pi Dalitz plot slope g and decay rate asymmetries, and the Standard Model prediction for Br(K_L -> pi0 e+ e-).
