It starts with discussing the classical method, and then proceeds with the recently discovered ones: logarithmic desingularization of logarithmic schemes and morphisms, weighted methods: logarithmic and non-logarithmic ones, desingularization in wider contexts: quasi-excellent schemes and formal schemes, complex and non-archimedean spaces.

Abstract:We introduce and study a log discrepancy function on the space of semivaluations centered on an integral noetherian scheme of positive characteristic. Our definition shares many properties with the analogue in characteristic zero; we prove that if log resolutions exist, then our definition agrees with previous approaches to log discrepancies of semivaluations that these resolutions. We then apply this log discrepancy to a variety of topics in singularity theory over fields of positive characteristic. Strong F-regularity and sharp $F$-purity of Cartier subalgebras are detected using positivity and non-negativity of log discrepancies of semivaluations, just as Kawamata log terminal and log canonical singularities are defined using divisorial log discrepancies, making precise a long-standing heuristic. We prove, in positive characteristic, several theorems of Jonsson and Mustata in characteristic zero regarding log canonical thresholds of graded sequences of ideals. Along the way, we give a valuation-theoretic proof that asymptotic multiplier ideals are coherent on strongly F-regular schemes.

A log resolution for the theta divisor of a hyperelliptic curve

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the theta divisor of a smooth hyperelliptic curve has a natural and explicit embedded resolution of singularities using iterated blowups of Brill-Noether subvarieties. We also show that the Brill-Noether stratification of the hyperelliptic Jacobian is a Whitney stratification.

Abstract:We formulate a resolution of singularities algorithm for analyzing the zero sets of real-analytic functions in dimensions $\geq 3$. Rather than using the celebrated result of Hironaka, the algorithm is modeled on a more explicit and elementary approach used in the contemporary algebraic geometry literature. As an application, we define a new notion of the height of real-analytic functions, compute the critical integrability index and obtain the sharp growth rate of sublevel sets. This also leads to a characterization of the oscillation index of scalar oscillatory integrals with real-analytic phases in all dimensions.

A short resolution of the diagonal for smooth projective toric varieties of Picard rank 2

Abstract:Given a smooth projective toric variety $X$ of Picard rank 2, we resolve the diagonal sheaf on $X \times X$ by a linear complex of length $\dim{X}$ consisting of finite direct sums of line bundles. As applications, we prove a new case of a conjecture of Berkesch-Erman-Smith that predicts a version of Hilbert's Syzygy Theorem for virtual resolutions, and we obtain a Horrocks-type splitting criterion for vector bundles over smooth projective toric varieties of Picard rank 2, extending a result of Eisenbud-Erman-Schreyer. We also apply our results to give a new proof, in the case of smooth projective toric varieties of Picard rank 2, of a conjecture of Orlov concerning the Rouquier dimension of derived categories.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{A}$ be an abelian category. A subcategory $\mathcal{X}$ of $\mathcal{A}$ is called a resolving subcategory if $\mathcal{X}$ is closed under extensions and kernels of epimorphisms and contains all projective objects of $\mathcal{A}$. In this paper, we consider the $\mathcal{X}$-resolution dimensions and special $\mathcal{X}$-precovers for a resolving subcategory $\mathcal{X}$ of $\mathcal{A}.$ Many results in Araya et al. Abstract:We prove the finiteness of log pluricanonical representations for projective log canonical pairs with semi-ample log canonical divisor. As a corollary, we obtain that the log canonical divisor of a projective semi log canonical pair is semi-ample if and only if so is the log canonical divisor of its normalization. We also treat many other applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the resolving resolution dimension with respect to the recollements of abelian categories. Let [Formula: see text] be a recollement of abelian categories such that [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] have enough projective objects and let [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] be resolving subcategories of [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], respectively. We establish some upper and lower bounds of [Formula: see text]-resolution dimension of [Formula: see text] in terms of the [Formula: see text]-resolution dimension of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]-resolution dimension of [Formula: see text]. Based on these upper and lower bounds, we study the Gorensteinness of abelian categories involved in [Formula: see text]. Under some suitable assumptions, we show that if [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are Gorenstein, then [Formula: see text] is Gorenstein. As applications, we apply our results to ring theory and the triangular matrix artin algebras, we study the quasi-Frobenius and Gorenstein hereditary properties of the ring [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text] is an idempotent element of [Formula: see text]. We also investigate Gorensteinness of the triangular matrix artin algebras, some known results are obtained as corollaries. At the end of this paper, we give two examples to illustrate our results.

Abstract:We first introduce and study the notion of multi-weighted blow-ups, which is later used to systematically construct an explicit yet efficient algorithm for functorial logarithmic resolution in characteristic zero, in the sense of Hironaka. Specifically, for a singular, reduced closed subscheme $X$ of a smooth scheme $Y$ over a field of characteristic zero, we resolve the singularities of $X$ by taking proper transforms $X_i \subset Y_i$ along a sequence of multi-weighted blow-ups $Y_N \to Y_{N-1} \to \dotsb \to Y_0 = Y$ which satisfies the following properties: (i) the $Y_i$ are smooth Artin stacks with simple normal crossing exceptional loci; (ii) at each step we always blow up the worst singular locus of $X_i$, and witness on $X_{i+1}$ an immediate improvement in singularities; (iii) and finally, the singular locus of $X$ is transformed into a simple normal crossing divisor on $X_N$.

Logarithmic geometry beyond fs

Abstract:We develop the foundations of logarithmic structures beyond the standard finiteness conditions. The motivation is the study of semistable models over general valuation rings. The key new notion is that of a morphism of finite presentation up to saturation (sfp), which is one that is qcqs and which is locally isomorphic to the saturated base change of a finitely presented morphism between fs log schemes. As in the case of schemes, sfp maps can (locally on the base) be approximated by maps between fs log schemes of finite type over $\mathbb{Z}$. Based on sfp maps, we define smooth, étale, and Kummer étale maps. Importantly, the maps of schemes underlying such maps are no longer of finite type in general, though surprisingly they are if the base is the spectrum of a valuation ring with algebraically closed field of fractions. These foundations allow us to extend beyond the fs case the theory of the Kummer étale site and of the Kummer étale fundamental group.

Uniformization of varieties with log-canonical singularities

Abstract:We study the problem of uniformizing quasi-projective varieties with logcanonical compactifications. More precisely, given a complex projective variety X with log-canonical singularities, we give criteria for X to be isomorphic to a Baily-Borel-Mok compactification of a ball quotient, asking on the one hand the equality case in a suitable Miyaoka-Yau (MY) inequality, and on the other hand some adequate assumptions on the singularities. We also give as a result of independent interest that log-resolutions of log-canonical singularities have their fibers connected by chains of special varieties in the sense of Campana; this is used in the proof to control the behaviour of the period map near the exceptional divisors of such resolutions. We also show that it is necessary to assume that the singularities are at least logcanonical: some examples of Deligne-Mostow-Deraux can be manipulated to provide examples of singular varieties satisfying the equality case in MY, while not being isomorphic to such Baily-Borel-Mok compactifications.

Resolutions as directed colimits

Abstract:A general principle suggests that "anything flat is a directed colimit of countably presentable flats". In this paper, we consider resolutions and coresolutions of modules over a countably coherent ring $R$ (e.g., any coherent ring or any countably Noetherian ring). We show that any $R$-module of flat dimension $n$ is a directed colimit of countably presentable $R$-modules of flat dimension at most $n$, and any flatly coresolved $R$-module is a directed colimit of countably presentable flatly coresolved $R$-modules. If $R$ is a countably coherent ring with a dualizing complex, then any F-totally acyclic complex of flat $R$-modules is a directed colimit of F-totally acyclic complexes of countably presentable flat $R$-modules. The proofs are applications of an even more general category-theoretic principle going back to an unpublished 1977 preprint of Ulmer. Our proof of the assertion that every Gorenstein-flat module over a countably coherent ring is a directed colimit of countably presentable Gorenstein-flat modules uses a different technique, based on results of Saroch and Stovicek. We also discuss totally acyclic complexes of injectives and Gorenstein-injective modules, obtaining various cardinality estimates for the accessibility rank under various assumptions.

Abstract:We construct small resolutions of the moduli space $\overline{Q}_n$ of stable scaled $n$-marked lines of Ziltener and Ma'u--Woodward and of the moduli space $\overline{P}_n$ of stable $n$-marked ${\mathbb G}_a$-rational trees introduced in earlier work. The resolution of $\overline{P}_n$ is the augmented wonderful variety corresponding to the graphic matroid of the complete graph. The resolution of $\overline{Q}_n$ is a further blowup, also a wonderful model of an arrangement in ${\mathbb P}^{n-1}$.

Noncommutative resolutions of AS-Gorenstein isolated singularites

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate noncommutative resolutions of (generalized) AS-Gorenstein isolated singularities. Noncommutative resolutions in graded case are achieved as the graded endomorphism rings of some finitely generated graded modules, which are seldom $\mathbb{N}$-graded algebras but bounded-below $\mathbb{Z}$-graded algebras. So, the paper works on locally finite bounded-below $\mathbb{Z}$-graded algebras. We first define and study noncommutative projective schemes after Artin-Zhang, and define noncommutative quasi-projective spaces as the base spaces of noncommutative projective schemes. The equivalences between noncommutative quasi-projective spaces are proved to be induced by so-called modulo-torsion-invertible bimodules, which is in fact a Morita-like theory at the quotient category level. Based on the equivalences, we propose a definition of noncommutative resolutions of generalized AS-Gorenstein isolated singularities, and prove that such noncommutative resolutions are generalized AS regular algebras. The center of any noncommutative resolution is isomorphic to the center of the original generalized AS-Gorenstein isolated singularity. In the final part we prove that a noncommutative resolution of an AS-Gorenstein isolated singularity of dimension $d$ is given by an MCM generator $M$ if and only if $M$ is a $(d-1)$-cluster tilting module. A noncommutative version of the Bondal-Orlov conjecture is also proved to be true in dimension 2 and 3.

Abstract:This text, which appeared in volume 2313 of the Springer Lecture Notes in Math. dedicated to Catriona Byrne, presents problems in two different areas of algebraic geometry. The first concerns the role of ``infinitely singular'' or ``non Abhyankar'' valuations in the study of local uniformization of valuations with a view to resolution of singularities in positive characteristic. The second one concerns the relationship of the geometry of the discriminant of real miniversal unfoldings in the sense of Thom with the movements of Morse functions on a cobordism which differential geometers use.

Abstract:Let $(X, \Delta)/U$ be klt pairs and $Q$ be a convex set of divisors. Assuming that the relative Kodaira dimensions are non-negative, then there are only finitely many log canonical models when the boundary divisors varying in a relatively compact rational polytope in $Q$. As a consequence, we show the existence of the log canonical model for a klt pair $(X, \Delta)/U$ with real coefficients.
