Abstract:In this contribution we briefly review the current status of the dipole models and parton saturation on the basis of results presented at the HERA-LHC workshops in the years 2006-2008. The problem of foundations of the dipole models is addressed within the QCD formalism. Some limitations of the models and open problems are pointed out. Furthermore, we review and compare the currently used dipole models and summarise the applications to describe various sets of HERA data. Finally we outline some of the theoretical approaches to the problem of multiple scattering and saturation.

Abstract:Parton saturation is one of the most intriguing phenomena in the high energy nuclear physics research frontier, especially in the upcoming era of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The lepton-jet correlation in deep inelastic scattering provides us with a new gateway to the parton saturation at the EIC. In particular, we demonstrate that azimuthal angle anisotropies of the lepton-jet correlation are sensitive to the strength of the saturation momentum in the EIC kinematic region. In contrast to the predictions based on the collinear framework calculation, significant nuclear modification of the anisotropies is observed when we compare the saturation physics results in e+p and e+Au scatterings. Abstract:This talk is an attempt to review all our knowledge on saturation at low $x$ both theoretical and experimental, to stimulate a search for saturation effects at THERA. The main goals of this presentation are 1. To discuss an intuitive picture of the deep inelastic scattering that leads to the saturation of the parton densities; 2. To show that the saturation hypothesis has solid theoretical proof; 3. To report on the theoretical progress that has been made over the past two years in high parton density QCD, and on the property of the saturation phase that emerges from the theory that has been developed; 4. To collect all that we know theoretically and experimentally about the saturation scale $Q_s(x)$ .

Abstract:These lecture notes are a combination of two lectures and a contribution to the celebration of Andrzej Białas' birthday at the LI Cracow School of Theoretical Physics in June 2011. I here discuss the dynamics of particle production in high energy reactions. It includes parton cascades and hadronization in e+e--ann., small x evolution including the Double Leading Log approximation and the BFKL equation, saturation at high densities and the BK equation, and finally the Lund Dipole Cascade model for high energy collisions, which is implemented in the DIPSY MC.

Abstract:We discuss how the main features of high-energy `soft' and `semihard' pp collisions may be described in terms of parton cascades and multi-Pomeron exchange. The interaction between Pomerons produces an effective infrared cutoff, k_sat, by the absorption of low k_t partons. This provides the possibility of extending the parton approach, used for `hard' processes, to also describe high-energy soft and semihard interactions. We outline a model which incorporates these features. Finally, we discuss what the most recent LHC measurements in the soft domain imply for the model.

All this is done in a scenario where energy conservation is not taken care of, but this is needed, in particular for Monte Carlo simulations. When introducing energy-momentum sharing properly, the AGK theorem does not apply anymore, nor do simple geometric concepts such as binary scaling. I will discuss this (very serious) problem, and how it can be solved, in the EPOS4 framework. When connecting the multiple-Pomeron approach (for parallel scatterings) and perturbative QCD, one is actually forced to implement in a very particular way saturation scales in order to get an approach free of contradictions. One recovers a generalized AGK theorem (gAGK), valid at large pt (larger than the relevant saturation scales). I discuss how gAGK is related to factorization (in proton-proton scatterings) and binary scaling (in heavy-ion collisions). Revealing a deep connection between factorization and saturation: New insight into modeling high-energy proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus scattering in the EPOS4 framework

Abstract:It is known that multiple partonic scatterings in high-energy proton-proton ($pp$) collisions must happen in parallel. However, a rigorous parallel scattering formalism, taking energy sharing properly into account, fails to reproduce factorization, which on the other hand is the basis of almost all $pp$ event generators. In addition, binary scaling in nuclear scatterings is badly violated. These problems are usually ``solved'' by simply not considering strictly parallel scatterings, which is not a solution. I will report on new ideas (leading to EPOS4), which allow recovering perfectly factorization, and also binary scaling in $AA$ collisions, in a rigorous unbiased parallel scattering formalism. In this new approach, dynamical saturation scales play a crucial role, and this seems to be the missing piece needed to reconcile parallel scattering with factorization. From a practical point of view, one can compute within the EPOS4 framework parton distribution functions (EPOS PDFs) and use them to compute inclusive $pp$ cross sections. So, for the first time, one may compute inclusive jet production (for heavy or light flavors) at very high transverse momentum ($p_{t}$) and at the same time in the same formalism study flow effects at low $p_{t}$ in high-multiplicity $pp$ events, making EPOS4 a full-scale ``general purpose event generator''. I discuss applications, essentially multiplicity dependencies (of particle ratios, mean $p_{t}$, charm production) which are very strongly affected by the saturation issues discussed in this paper.

Saturation and fluctuations in the proton wavefunction at large momentum transfers in exclusive diffraction at HERA

Abstract:We present a model of proton geometry where the number and size of gluon density hotspots in the proton's thickness function evolves with the resolution scale of the event given by the Mandelstam $t$ variable in exclusive diffractive $ep$ collisions. We use the impact-parameter dependent saturation dipole model bSat/IPSat, as well as its linearised (non-saturated) version bNonSat. In the latter the proton thickness has a clear interpretation as a thickness and in the former it is directly related to the saturation scale. The resulting phenomenological model for the splitting of hotspots, making full use of earlier experimental and phenomenological studies, is able to describe the entire incoherent $t$-spectrum for $|t|>1.1~$GeV$^2$ with a single phenomenological parameter. We use the previously suggested hotspot model as an initial condition for our evolution. The resulting model is a resolution scale-evolution in the same vein as a parton shower.The incoherent cross section is directly proportional to geometrical fluctuations in the proton's inital state. The hotspot evolution give rise to several kinds of event-by-event fluctuations such as in the hotspot number, width and normalization, and saturation scale fluctuations is a direct effect of these. A natural consequence of our resolution based evolution is that the hotspots obtain an effective repulsion. We use our hotspot evolution model to investigate saturation scale effects in the $t$-spectrum, and found that HERA data is not sensitive to this physics.

Abstract:Multiparton interactions are a fascinating phenomenon that occur in almost every high-energy hadron-hadron collision yet are remarkably difficult to study quantitatively. In this Letter, we present a strategy to optimally disentangle multiparton interactions from the primary scattering in a collision. That strategy enables probes of multiparton interactions that are significantly beyond the state of the art, including their characteristic momentum scale, the interconnection between primary and secondary scatters, and the pattern of three and potentially even more simultaneous hard scatterings. Abstract:Concepts of wounded nucleon and quark participants have been used for years to parametrize and/or to explain many features of high energy nuclear collisions. Some results illustrating successes and failures of these two approaches are presented, including the latest developments. In particular, results on identified particle production from nuclear collisions measured by the NA49 experiment at the CERN-SPS are shown. The study has been done for both the nucleon and the constituent quark frameworks using the nuclear overlap model. In addition, some preliminary observations concerning the behavior of pT spectra at forward rapidities, expressed in terms of the nuclear modification factor, for hadron-nucleus collisions at the SPS energy are also presented. These results are in relevance to RHIC results for deuteron-gold collisions often interpreted as a manifestation of saturation and/or color glass condensate.

CGC/saturation approach: Impact-parameter dependent model in next-to-leading order of perturbative QCD and combined HERA data

Abstract:In this paper we confront the next-to-leading order (NLO) CGC/saturation approach of Ref. [1] with the experimental combined HERA data and obtain its parameters. The model includes two features that are in accordance with our theoretical knowledge of deep inelastic scattering. These consist of: $i$) the use of analytical solution for the non-linear Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) evolution equation and $ii$) the exponential behavior of the saturation momentum on the impact parameter $b$-dependence, characterized by $Q_s$ $\propto\exp( -m b )$ which reproduce the correct behaviour of the scattering amplitude at large $b$ in accord with Froissart theorem. The model results are then compared to data at small-x for the structure function of the proton $F_{2}$, the longitudinal structure function $F_{L}$, the charm structure function $F_2^{c\bar{c}}$, the exclusive vector meson ($J/\psi,\phi,\rho$) production and Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS). We obtain a good agreement for the processes in a wide kinematic range of $Q^2$ at small $x$. Our results provide a strong guide for finding an approach, based on Color Glass Condensate/saturation effective theory for high energy QCD, to make reliable predictions from first principles as well as for forthcoming experiments like the Electron-Ion Collider and the LHeC.

Abstract:We describe new QCD fits to diffractive cross sections measured at HERA and we use the parton densities derived from these fits to predict the shape of the dijet mass fraction in double Pomeron exchange at the Tevatron. We discuss the existence of exclusive events in this dijet channel and some prospects are given for the LHC.

Abstract:The Lorentz contraction of ultrarelativistic nuclei entails a spatial overlap and fusion (recombination, saturation) of partons belonging to different nucleons at the same impact parameter. In these lectures we present a consistent description of the fusion of partons in terms of nuclear attenuation of color dipole states of the photon and collective Weizsäcker-Williams (WW) gluon structure function of a nucleus. The point that all observables for DIS off nuclei are uniquely calculable in terms of the nuclear WW glue amounts to a new form of factorization in the saturation regime. We start with the theory of multichannel propagation of color dipoles in a nuclear medium including the color-singlet to color-octet to color-octet transitions. We show how the Glauber-Gribov formulas are recovered from the multichannel formalism. Then we derive the two-plateau momentum distribution of final state (FS) quarks produced in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) off nuclei in the saturation regime. Then we comment on the signatures of saturation in exclusive diffractive DIS. A large body of these lectures is on the recent theory of jet-jet inclusive cross sections. We show that for hard dijets the decorrelation momentum is of the order of the nuclear saturation momentum $Q_A$. For minijets with the transverse momentum below the saturation scale we predict a complete disappearance of the azimuthal jet-jet correlation. We conclude with comment on a possible relevance of the decorrelation of jets to the experimental data from the STAR-RHIC Collaboration.

Abstract:We discuss a phenomenological model that describes results on diffractive pp and pbar-p cross sections and event final states up to the Fermilab Tevatron collider energy of 1.96 TeV and use it to make predictions for Large Hadron Collider (LHC) collision energies up to 14 TeV and asymptotically as the pp collision energy goes to infinity. The model is anchored in a saturation effect observed in single diffraction dissociation that explains quantitatively the factorization breaking observed in soft and hard pp and pbar-p diffractive processes and in diffractive photoproduction and low Q-square deep inelastic scattering.
