Abstract:A class of "elliptic soliton" solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy, which includes a determinantal solution of Li and Zhang, is described in terms of pseudo-differential operator formulation. In our approach, the Li-Zhang solution is obtained by repeatedly applying the Darboux transformation to a stationary solution. Real-valued solutions are discussed and various examples that display web-like patterns are presented.

Abstract:Matrix equations associated with the KP equation are considered and a kind of special solutions of them are found. The asymptotical behavior of the solutions along any direction is discussed and a sufficient condition for a solution vanishing along this direction is provided. Interaction between solutions of two different types can be represented by the solution.

Abstract:The KP-I equation has family of solutions which decay to zero at space infinity. One of these solutions is the classical lump solution. This is a traveling wave, and the KP-I equation in this case reduces to the Boussinesq equation. In this paper we classify the lump type solutions of the Boussinesq equation. Using a robust inverse scattering transform developed by Bilman-Miller, we show that the lump type solutions are rational and their tau function has to be a polynomial of degree $k(k+1)$. In particular, this implies that the lump solution is the unique ground state of the KP-I equation (as conjectured by Klein and Saut in \cite{Klein0}). Our result generalizes a theorem by Airault-McKean-Moser on the classification of rational solutions for the KdV equation.

Abstract:Abstract The KP‐I equation has family of solutions which decay to zero at space infinity. In this paper we classify all the ‘lump‐type’ solutions of the Boussinesq equation. In particular, this implies that the lump solution is the unique ground state of the KP‐I equation (as conjectured by Klein–Saut). The problem studied in this paper was mentioned in Airault–McKean–Moser, our result can be regarded as a two‐dimensional analogy of their theorem on the classification of rational solutions for the KdV equation.

Families of KP solutions associated with tropical curves having nontrivial weights

Abstract:In order to generalize a program by Agostini and others producing new KP solutions, we construct families of quasi-periodic KP solutions which are derived from degenerating Riemann surfaces associated with tropical curves having nontrivial weights. By taking the regularized tropical limits of these solutions, we obtain formulas of general KP solutions which are expressed by mixtures of solitons and Riemann theta functions.

Abstract:By constraining the potential of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation to its co-invariants expressed in terms of the squared eigenfunctions, the KP equation is reduced to a (1 + 1)-dimensional system consisting of the generalized multicomponent nonlinear Schrödinger and modified Korteweg-de Vries equations. So any solution of this system gives rise to a solution of the KP equation, such as new kinds of soliton-like solutions and a solution periodic in the x direction.

Abstract:In this paper, Lie group analysis method is applied to the extended (3+1)-dimensional Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-Boussinesq equation and the corresponding similarity reduction equations are obtained with various infinitesimal generators. By selecting suitable arbitrary functions in the similarity reduction solutions, we obtain abundant invariant solutions, including the trigonometric solution, the kink-lump interaction solution, the interaction solution between lump wave and triangular periodic wave, the two-kink solution, the lump solution, the interaction between a lump and two-kink and the periodic lump solution in different planes. These exact solutions are also given graphically to show the detailed structures of this high dimensional integrable system.

Abstract:Quasi-periodic solutions of the KP hierarchy acted by vertex operators are studied. We show, with the aid of the Sato Grassmannian, that solutions thus constructed correspond to torsion free rank one sheaves on some singular algebraic curves whose normalizations are the non-singular curves corresponding to the seed quasi-periodic solutions. It means that the action of the vertex operator has an effect of creating singular points on an algebraic curve. We further check, by examples, that solutions obtained here can be considered as solitons on quasi-periodic backgrounds, where the soliton matrices are determined by parameters in the vertex operators.

On uniqueness of KP soliton structures

Abstract:We consider the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II (KP) model placed in $\mathbb R_t \times \mathbb R_{x,y}^2$, in the case of smooth data that are not necessarily in a Sobolev space. In this paper, the subclass of smooth solutions we study is of ``soliton type'', characterized by a phase $\Theta=\Theta(t,x,y)$ and a unidimensional profile $F$. In particular, every classical KP soliton and multi-soliton falls into this category with suitable $\Theta$ and $F$. We establish concrete characterizations of KP solitons by means of a natural set of nonlinear differential equations and inclusions of functionals of Wronskian, Airy and Heat types, among others. These functional equations only depend on the new variables $\Theta$ and $F$. A distinct characteristic of this set of functionals is its special and rigid structure tailored to the considered soliton. By analyzing $\Theta$ and $F$, we establish the uniqueness of line-solitons, multi-solitons, and other degenerate solutions among a large class of KP solutions. Our results are also valid for other 2D dispersive models such as the quadratic and cubic Zakharov-Kuznetsov equations.

Abstract:Recently, a new decomposition of the (2+1)-dimensional Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation to a (1+1)dimensional Broer-Kaup (BK) equation and a (1+1) -dimensional high-order BK equation was presented by Lou and Hu. In our paper, a unified Darboux transformation for both the BK equation and high-order BK equation is derived with the help of a gauge transformation of their spectral problems. As application, new explicit soliton-like solutions with five arbitrary parameters for the BK equation, high-order BK equation and KP equation are obtained.
An algebraic-geometric construction of "lump" solutions of the KP1 equation

Abstract:In this note, we show how certain everywhere-regular real rational function solutions of the KP1 equation ("multi-lumps") can be constructed via the polynomial analogs of theta functions from singular rational curves with cusps. We use two methods, one direct and the other producing a degeneration of the well-understood soliton solutions from nodal singular curves. The second approach can be seen as a variation on the long-wave limit technique of Ablowitz and Satsuma, as developed by Zhang, Yang, Li, Guo, and Stepanyants. We present an explicit example of a three-lump solution constructed via the polynomial analog of the theta function from a rational curve with two cuspidal singular points, each with semigroup $\langle 2,5\rangle$. (In the theory of curve singularities, these are known as $A_4$ double points.) We conjecture that these ideas will generalize to give similar $M$-lump solutions with $M = \frac{N(N+1)}{2}$ for $N > 2$ starting from rational curves with two singular points with semigroup $\langle 2,2N+1\rangle$ ($A_{2N}$ double points). We also show a five-lump solution obtained from a curve with two cusps with semigroup $\langle 3,4\rangle$. Similar solutions have been constructed by other methods previously; our contribution is to show how they arise from the algebraic-geometric setting by considering singular curves with several cusps, as in previous work of Agostini, Celik, and Little.

Abstract:This paper constructs more general exact solutions than N-soliton solution and Wronskian solution for variable-coefficient Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation. By using the Hirota method and Pfaffian technique, it finds the Grammian determinant-type solution for the variable-coefficient KP equation (VCKP), the Wronski-type Pfaffian solution and the Gram-type Pfaffian solutions for the Pfaffianized VCKP equation.

Abstract:A complete classification of compacton solutions is carried out for a generalization of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation involving nonlinear dispersion in two and higher spatial dimensions. In particular, precise conditions are given on the nonlinearity powers in this equation under which a travelling wave can be cut off to obtain a compacton. Numerous explicit examples having various profiles are derived, including a quadratic function, powers of a cosine, and powers of Jacobi $\cn$ functions, all of which are symmetric. The cosine and $\cn$ symmetric compactons have an anti-symmetric counterpart. In comparison, explicit solitary waves of the generalized KP equation are found to have profiles given by a power of a sech and a reciprocal quadratic function. Kinematic properties of all of the different types of compactons and solitary waves are discussed, along with conservation laws of the generalized KP equation.

Abstract:Three (2+1)-dimensional equations, they are KP equation, cylindrical KP equation and spherical KP equation, have been reduced to the same KdV equation by different transformation of variables respectively. Since the single solitary wave solution and 2-solitary wave solution of the KdV equation have been known already, substituting the solutions of the KdV equation into the corresponding transformation of variables respectively, the single and 2-solitary wave solutions of the three (2+1)-dimensional equations can be obtained successfully.

Abstract:Soliton solutions of the KP equation have been studied since 1970, when Kadomtsev and Petviashvili proposed a two-dimensional dispersive wave equation now known as the KP equation. It is well-known that one can use the Wronskian method to construct a soliton solution to the KP equation from each point of the real Grassmannian Gr_kn. More recently several authors have studied the regular solutions that one obtains in this way: these come from points of the totally non-negative part of the Grassmannian (Gr_kn)_{>= 0}. In this paper we exhibit a surprising connection between the theory of total positivity for the Grassmannian, and the structure of regular soliton solutions to the KP equation. By exploiting this connection, we obtain new insights into the structure of KP solitons, as well as new interpretations of the combinatorial objects indexing cells of (Gr_kn)_{>= 0}. In particular, we completely classify the spatial patterns of the soliton solutions coming from (Gr_2n)_{>0}, as well as those coming from (Gr_kn)_{>= 0} when the absolute value of the time parameter is sufficiently large. We also demonstrate an intriguing connection between soliton graphs for (Gr_kn)_{>0} and the cluster algebras of Fomin and Zelevinsky, and we use this connection to solve the inverse problem for generic KP solitons coming from (Gr_kn)_{>0}. Finally we construct all the soliton graphs for (Gr_2n)_{>0} using the triangulations of n-gon.

Abstract:In this article, we introduce many new Jacobi elliptic function solutions to the general elliptic equation. Consequently, the Jacobi elliptic function expansion method is improved to accommodate the general elliptic equation and its new solutions for constructing exact traveling wave solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations (NLPDEs). Moreover, the improved method is used to obtain new explicit solutions for the (3+1)-dimensional integrable Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation. This method can be applied to many other NLPDEs as well for obtaining new exact solutions.
