Abstract:We consider the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II (KP) model placed in $\mathbb R_t \times \mathbb R_{x,y}^2$, in the case of smooth data that are not necessarily in a Sobolev space. In this paper, the subclass of smooth solutions we study is of ``soliton type'', characterized by a phase $\Theta=\Theta(t,x,y)$ and a unidimensional profile $F$. In particular, every classical KP soliton and multi-soliton falls into this category with suitable $\Theta$ and $F$. We establish concrete characterizations of KP solitons by means of a natural set of nonlinear differential equations and inclusions of functionals of Wronskian, Airy and Heat types, among others. These functional equations only depend on the new variables $\Theta$ and $F$. A distinct characteristic of this set of functionals is its special and rigid structure tailored to the considered soliton. By analyzing $\Theta$ and $F$, we establish the uniqueness of line-solitons, multi-solitons, and other degenerate solutions among a large class of KP solutions. Our results are also valid for other 2D dispersive models such as the quadratic and cubic Zakharov-Kuznetsov equations.
Analysis of PDEs
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to solve the uniqueness problem of soliton structures in the Kadomtsev - Petviashvili II (KP) model. Specifically, the authors study a special class of smooth solutions, which are called "soliton - type" and are characterized by having a phase \(\Theta=\Theta(t, x, y)\) and a one - dimensional profile \(F\). By analyzing these variables, the authors aim to establish the uniqueness of linear solitons, multi - solitons and other degenerate solutions in a large class of KP solutions. ### Core problems of the paper 1. **Define soliton - type solutions**: The paper first defines the form of soliton - type solutions as: \[ u(t, x, y)=2 \partial_x^2 F(\Theta(t, x, y)) \] where \(\Theta\) is the phase and \(F\) is the profile function. Each classical KP soliton and multi - soliton can be represented in this form. 2. **Establish nonlinear differential equations and functionals**: In order to characterize KP solitons, the authors introduce a set of natural nonlinear differential equations and functionals including Wronskian, Airy and Heat types. These functionals only depend on the new variables \(\Theta\) and \(F\). For example, they define the following types of phases: - Airy type: \(Ai(\Theta):=\Theta_t-\Theta_{xxx} = 0\) - Heat type: \(H(\Theta):=\Theta_y-\Theta_{xx}=0\) - Wronskian type: \(W_x(\Theta):=\Theta_{xxxx}-\frac{\Theta_{xx}^2}{\Theta}=0\) and \(W_y(\Theta):=\Theta_{yy}-\frac{\Theta_y^2}{\Theta}=0\) 3. **Uniqueness results**: By analyzing \(\Theta\) and \(F\), the authors establish the uniqueness of linear solitons, multi - solitons and other degenerate solutions. For example, for the KdV linear soliton, the author proves that if the solution satisfies \(H(\Theta)=Ai(\Theta)=W_y(\Theta)=0\), then the solution must be a KdV soliton and the profile function \(F = \log\). 4. **Extension to other models**: The results of the paper are applicable not only to the KP - II model, but also to other two - dimensional dispersion models, such as the quadratic and cubic Zakharov - Kuznetsov equations. ### Summary The main purpose of this paper is to characterize and prove the uniqueness of different soliton solutions in the KP model by introducing specific nonlinear differential equations and functionals. This work not only deepens the understanding of the KP model, but also provides new methods and tools for the research of other related dispersion models.
