Abstract:Data from the interfaced-resolved direct numerical simulations (IR-DNSs) of upward turbulent channel flow laden with finite-size heavy particles at particle concentration ranging from 0.84% to 2.36% are used to develop improved drag correlations which account for the effect of turbulence on drag enhancement. First, the contribution of drag nonlinearity to drag enhancement for the turbulent flow over a fixed sphere is analyzed with the consideration of velocity fluctuation anisotropy. The nonlinear drag enhancement is generally smaller than the actual drag enhancement in our numerical simulations. Second, several models for turbulence correction are presented with different choice of model parameters, and it is found that the turbulent intensity normalized by the mean slip velocity and the particle size normalized by the Kolmogorov scale are most important for modeling the effect of turbulence on particle drag, while the anisotropy of fluctuating velocity and the particle Reynolds number are less important.
Semiempirical Model of the Drag Force Acting on an Obstacle in Downward Dense Particle Flows As Per the Flow-Around Behavior

Abstract:Determination of the flow-around drag force acting on an internal when particles downwardly flow around the internal is important for the safety of internals in the downward particle flow channel. In this study, the flow behaviors of particles downwardly flowing around different obstacles were investigated and a semiempirical drag force model was proposed based on the characteristics of the flow patterns. The proposed model was validated and key coefficients were correlated using the experimental data. The results indicate that there were three featured flow zones when particles downwardly flowed around an obstacle: the flow stagnant zone (disappear for triangular/conical obstacle), the slip-shear flow zone, and the flow separation zone. The stagnant zone angle and the flow separation angle were proposed to depict transition points of three flow zones when particles flowed around a cylindrical/spherical obstacle, and the two angles were found independent of the flow condition. A drag force model as per the flow patterns was proposed. The model decomposed the drag force into the compression force, the shear force, and the confinement force. The expressions of the compression stress, the shear stress, the effective area, and the confinement force were given. The mathematical form of the proposed model was validated and key coefficients in this model were also correlated using the experimental data. The average error of the drag force model was +/- 7.6% while the maximum error was within +/- 15%.

Abstract:We theoretically model the combined dry and wet adhesion between a rigid sphere and an elastic substrate, where the dry contact area is surrounded by a liquid meniscus. The influence of the liquid on the interfacial adhesion is twofold: inducing the Laplace pressure around the dry contact area and altering the adhesion energy between solid surfaces. The behavior of such combined dry and wet adhesion shows a smooth transition between the JKR and DMT models for hydrophilic solids, governed by the prescribed liquid volume or environmental humidity. The JKR-DMT transition vanishes when the solids become hydrophobic. An inverse scaling law of adhesive strength indicates that size reduction helps to enhance the adhesive strength until a theoretical limit is reached. This study also demonstrates the jumping-on and jumping-off hysteresis between the combined dry-wet adhesion and pure liquid bridge in a complete separation and approach cycle.
Non-Slipping Adhesive Contact Between Dissimilar Elastic Solids under Normal and Tangential Loads

Abstract:In this paper, a model of two-dimensional non-slipping adhesive contact between dissimilar elastic solids under normal and tangential loads is proposed, and the general analytical solution is derived. The interaction of adhesion and friction along the contacting interface is studied. Specifically, (i) the shear-off force of adhesive contact is proposed; (ii) the effect of tangential load on the puff-off force is presented; (iii) the influence of the normal load on the shear-off force is obtained; (iv) in the context of these results, the nominal static friction coefficient is defined and analyzed, and it is shown that the static friction coefficient is a function of external normal load, which can well explain some experimental results in the literature. The proposed model appears to be consistent with the available experimental data, which offers new insight into the interplay mechanism between friction and adhesion. These results provide the foundation for understanding and modelling some tribological phenomena at the macro-, micro- and nano- scales.
Drag Model from Interface-Resolved Simulations of Particle Sedimentation in a Periodic Domain and Vertical Turbulent Channel Flows

Abstract:A drag correlation is established for laminar particle-laden flows, based on data from the interfaced-resolved direct numerical simulations (IR-DNS) of particle sedimentation in a periodic domain at density ratio ranging from 2 to 1000, particle concentration ranging from 0.59 % to 14.16 %, and particle Reynolds number below 132. Our drag decreases slightly with increasing density ratio when the other parameters are fixed. The drag correlation is then corrected to account for the turbulence effect by introducing the relative turbulent kinetic energy, from the IR-DNS data of the upward turbulent channel flows laden with the particles larger than the Kolmogorov length scale at relatively low particle volume fractions. A drift velocity model is developed to obtain the effective slip velocity from the interphase mean velocity difference for the vertical turbulent channel flow by considering the effects of particle inertia, particle concentration distribution and large-scale streamwise vortices.

Abstract:We present a simple model for the friction of two solid bodies moving against each other. In a self consistent way we can obtain the dependence of the macroscopic friction force as a function of the driving velocity, the normal force and the ruggedness of the surfaces in contact. Our results are discussed in the context of friction laws used in earthquake models.

Abstract:As the size of contacting and sliding tribosystems decrease, intermolecular or adhesive forces become significant partly due to nanometer size surface roughness. The presence of adhesion has a major influence on the interfacial contact and friction forces as well as the microtribosystem dynamics (microtribodynamics) and thus influences the overall dynamic friction behavior. In this paper a dynamic friction model that explicitly includes adhesion, interfacial damping, and the system dynamics for realistic rough surfaces was developed. The results show that the amplitude and mean value of the time varying normal contact and friction forces increase in the presence of adhesion Under continuous contact conditions. Also, due to the attractive nature of adhesion, its presence delays or eliminates the occurrence of loss of contact. Furthermore, in the presence of significant adhesion, dynamic friction behavior is significantly more complicated compared to the no adhesion case, and the dynamic friction coefficient predictions may be misleading. Thus, it is more appropriate to discuss dynamic friction force instead of dynamic friction coefficient under dynamic conditions.

Abstract:Combined with the Eulerian approach, energy minimization multi-scale (EMMS) theory was used to develop a new theoretical model for the drag between the gas and solid phases in dense fluidized systems. The energy minimization was used in the solution procedure as an additional stability condition to close the conservation equations. The model was derived without introducing any empirical factors, so it can be used for more flow conditions in circulating fluidized beds (CFBs) than empirical models, especially for heterogeneous gas–solid two-phase flows that include cluster formation. Non-uniform particle distribution in computational cells, which is usually not described by the differential equations, is also considered in the new drag model. Both the drag values given by the model and simulation results for real systems agree well with experimental data. The results show that the model reasonably describes the interactions between the gas and particle phases in dense flows.

Abstract:A theoretical model based on the force balance between pressure, viscous force, and inertia force is proposed to predict the flow resistance of Newtonian and power-law non-Newtonian fluids through porous packed beds. The present model takes inertia effect into consideration, and the flow regime can be extended from Darcy flow to non-Darcy flow. It is demonstrated that the present model can predict most available experimental data well. The present results are also compared to the Ergun equation and other drag correlations.

Abstract:The drag force is one major particle–fluid interaction force in multiphase flows. Conventional drag force models do not accurately consider the effect of nonuniform particle distributions which limits their applicability with considerable nonuniform particle distributions. A meshless method (Element-Free Gelerkin method) was used for direct numerical simulations to simulate real particle collisions and investigate the drag coefficient variations in various nonuniform particle distributions. The classical drag force model is corrected using nonuniformity coefficients based on various nonuniform particle distributions in various multiphase flow types. The results show that the nonuniform particle distribution greatly affects the drag coefficient with different compacting directions having different results. In most situations, only the effect of compacting in the direction perpendicular to the main flow direction needs to be considered and the effect of compacting in the main flow direction can be neglected. The particle nonuniformity in the direction perpendicular to the main flow direction reflects the overall dynamic effect of the drag coefficient while the nonuniformity in the main flow direction reflects local fluctuations. Thus, the modified drag force model considering the nonuniform distribution more accurately reflects the dynamic effect of the drag coefficient. It can be more widely used than conventional drag force models.

Abstract:Resolving the sharp interface between the dilute and dense phases in gas–solid flows is a bottleneck in fine-grid simulations. This study addresses this issue through the theoretical analysis of an infinite gas–structure interface with arbitrary flow directions. The drag force at the interface is decomposed into three parts: the homogeneous drag forces of the dilute and dense regions and a stress divergence difference term. All the three parts are expressed as the functions of the solid volume fractions, particle Reynolds numbers, and stress divergences of the interface grid and its adjacent grids. The developed theoretical drag models at the interface are verified and improved based on particle-resolved direct numerical simulations (PR-DNSs) of flows past plug-like structures. The models are then tested against PR-DNSs of flows past bubble-containing, spherical, ellipsoidal structures. They yield significantly better performance than the traditional Beetstra et al.'s model [Beetstra et al., “Drag force of intermediate Reynolds number flow past mono- and bidisperse arrays of spheres,” AIChE J. 53(2), 489–501 (2007)].

Abstract:The drag of dispersals towards a membrane surface is a consequence of the filtration process. It also represents the first step towards the development of the problem of fouling. In order to combat membrane fouling, it is important to understand such drag mechanisms and provide a modeling framework. In this work, a new modeling and numerical approach is introduced that is based on a one-domain model in which both the dispersals and the surrounding fluid are dealt with as a fluid with heterogeneous property fields. Furthermore, because of the fact that the geometry of the object assumes axial symmetry and the configuration remains fixed, the location of the interface may be calculated using geometrical relationships. This alleviates the need to define an indicator function and solve a hyperbolic equation to update the configuration. Furthermore, this approach simplifies the calculations and significantly reduces the computational burden required otherwise if one incorporates a hyperbolic equation to track the interface. To simplify the calculations, we consider the motion of an extended cylindrical object. This allows a reduction in the dimensions of the problem to two, thereby reducing the computational burden without a loss of generality. Furthermore, for this particular case there exists an approximate analytical solution that accounts for the effects of the confining boundaries that usually exist in real systems. We use such a setup to provide the benchmarking of the different averaging techniques for the calculations of properties at the cell faces and center, particularly in the cells involving the interface.

Abstract:We calculate the friction force between two metallic bodies with hat surfaces separated by a vacuum slab of thickness d, and moving with a relative velocity upsilon. The separation d is assumed to be so large that the only interaction between the bodies is via the Coulomb field. The friction force depends linearly on the velocity upsilon (for small upsilon) and decays rapidly with increasing d. In most practical cases, the Coulomb drag makes a negligible contribution to the friction force, but it may make an important contribution in some special cases.

Abstract:As a canonical problem, the impulsive starting of a circular disk contains the fundamental mechanisms of the force generation of the drag-based propulsions. In this paper, a circular disk is uniformly accelerated to a constant target velocity along a straight path, the instantaneous drag on and the flow fields around the disk are measured. A series of experiments were conducted by varying the two dimensionless numbers, i.e., the Reynolds number ( Re) ranging from 40 000 to 80 000 and the acceleration number ([Formula: see text]) (double normalized uniform-acceleration distance) ranging from 0.5 to 2. Based on the quasi-steady and the impulse-based ideas, two analytical models are proposed for predicting and accounting for the drag force on the disk. Moreover, the two models distinguish the generation of the drag force into three phases. In the acceleration phase, the growth rate and initial peak of the drag on the disk strongly depend on [Formula: see text], which make the drag-force histories exhibit a good scaling law for a given [Formula: see text], and the whole drag is generally contributed by the increased growth rate of the vortex ring circulation. In the transition phase, the drag decreases owing to the decrease in the circulation growth rate of the vortex ring. In the vortex pinch-off phase, the circulation of the vortex ring nearly no longer grows and the size growth rate of vortex ring gradually plays a dominant role in the drag generation. The present results suggest two implications. The peak of the drag in the accelerating phase implies an alternative perspective for understanding the high-lift generation in the reversal of wing stroke in flapping flight, and three-phase drag generation implies a controllable principle based on vortex formation for enhancing the force generation in drag-based propulsions.

Abstract:Particle-resolved direct numerical simulations (PR-DNSs) are employed to simulate flows past various stationary clusters of spheres in low-particle-Reynolds-number regime. The results show that the drag force at the interface between the dilute and dense phases is significantly different from the prediction of the traditional homogeneous BVK law (AIChE Journal, 2007, 53(2):489-501). The drag force at the interface is found to be the function of the solid volume fraction gradient, the superficial velocity gradient and the size of the grid on which the drag force is computed. Based on the PR-DNS data, a new microscopic drag model considering the interface effect is formulated. The effectiveness of the new drag models is demonstrated in flows past ellipsoidal clusters of particles. The results show that, in terms of the global drag force on the clusters, the difference between the prediction of the new model and the PR-DNS data is generally less than 17%. While the prediction of the BVK law is more than 200% larger than the PR-DNS data. The comparison is made at the grid size of three times of the particle diameter, which is a commonly adopted size in fine-grid two fluid model as well as computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method simulations. Therefore, the new drag model is very promising in resolving the detailed interactions between the gas and solid phases in flows with complex fine structures such as riser flows. Abstract:The laws of friction are reasonably well understood for the case of blocks in contact with rough plane surfaces. However, as far as bodies with circular sections are concerned, the physics of friction becomes more involving and it is not possible to adopt a simple conceptual framework to explain all phenomena. In particular, there is no approach so far to the problem of the resistance force that opposes to circular bodies that remain at rest while acted upon by small forces. Here we fill this gap by introducing a mechanical model based on both the elasticity theory and Hertz contact mechanics. Our approach furnishes a quantitative expression for the critical force beyond which rest can no longer be maintained. Besides confirming the expected proportionality of the resistance force with the load, our result contains no free parameters and is expressed solely in terms of physical properties of the problem, such as the pressure of the body per unit of superficial area, a relation between the Young modulus of the surface and its Poisson ratio, and the symmetry of the contact.
Drag force on a particle straddling a fluid interface: Influence of interfacial deformations

Abstract:We numerically investigate the influence of interfacial deformations on the drag force exerted on a particle straddling a fluid interface. We perform finite element simulations of the two-phase flow system in a bounded two-dimensional geometry. The fluid interface is modeled with a phase-field method which is coupled to the Navier-Stokes equations to solve for the flow dynamics. The interfacial deformations are caused by the buoyant weight of the particle, which results in curved menisci. We compute drag coefficients as a function of the three-phase contact angle, the viscosity ratio of the two fluids, and the particle density. Our results show that, for some parameter values, large drag forces are not necessarily correlated with large interfacial distortions and that a lower drag may actually be achieved with non-flat interfaces rather than with unperturbed ones.
A contact model for sticking of adhesive meso-particles

Abstract:The interaction between visco-elasto-plastic and adhesive particles is the subject of this study, where "meso-particles" are introduced, i.e., simplified particles, whose contact mechanics is not taken into account in all details. A few examples of meso-particles include agglomerates or groups of primary particles, or inhomogeneous particles with micro-structures of the scale of the contact deformation, such as core-shell materials. A simple, flexible contact model for meso-particles is proposed, which allows to model the bulk behavior of assemblies of many particles in both rapid and slow, quasi-static flow situations. An attempt is made to categorize existing contact models for the normal force, discuss all the essential mechanical ingredients that must enter the model (qualitatively) and finally solve it analytically. The model combines a short-ranged, non-contact part (resembling either dry or wet materials) with an elaborate, visco-elasto-plastic and adhesive contact law. Using energy conservation arguments, an analytical expression for the coefficient of restitution is derived in terms of the impact velocity (for pair interactions or, equivalently, without loss of generality, for quasi-static situations in terms of the maximum overlap or confining stress). Adhesive particles (or meso-particles) stick to each other at very low impact velocity, while they rebound less dissipatively with increasing velocity, in agreement with previous studies. For even higher impact velocities an interesting second sticking and rebound regime is reported. The low velocity sticking is due to non-contact adhesive forces, the first rebound regime is due to stronger elastic and kinetic energies with little dissipation, while the high velocity sticking is generated by the non-linearly increasing, history dependent plastic dissipation and adhesive contact force.

Nonadditive drag of tandem rods drafting in granular sediments

Abstract:We examine the drag experienced by a pair of vertical rods moving in tandem through a granular bed immersed in a fluid as a function of their separation distance and speed. As in Newtonian fluids, the net drag experienced by the rods initially increases with distance from the value for a single rod before plateauing to twice the value. However, the drag acting on the two rods is remarkably different, with the leading rod experiencing roughly similar drag compared to a solitary rod, while the following rod experiences far less drag. The anomalous relationship of drag and the distance between the leading and following body is observed in both dry granular beds and while immersed in viscous Newtonian fluids across the quasi-static and the rate-dependent regimes. Through refractive index matching, we visualize the sediment flow past the two rods and show that a stagnant region develops in their reference frame between the rods for small separations. Thus, the following rod is increasingly shielded from the granular flow with decreasing separation distance, leading to a lower net drag. Care should be exercised in applying resistive force theory to multi-component objects moving in granular sediments based on our result that drag is not additive at short separation distances.

Abstract:For describing the cluster phenomenon and its effect on drag force in gas-solid two-phase flow, the paper analyzed theoretically developed a model of gas-solid drag force in Eulerian frame under consideration of cluster effects by using the energy minimization concept. Comparing with the existing models, the new model can describe the interaction between gas phase and particle phase reasonably, and avoid error caused by the inaccurate experiential coefficient. In the numerical simulation of a CFB apparatus, the result of the new model agrees with the experiment data well, so it shows the remarkable advantage or simulation of dense gas-solid two-phase flow.
