Abstract:The selection criterion for device material was presented based on the coupled wave propagation depth and propagation distance of different metal material surface.Silver has the best characteristics.The propagation characteristic of light wave in sub-wavelength slit surrounded by periodic grating corrugations for the p-polarized Gaussian beam of wavelength 1050 nm,as an example,was simulated through the finite difference time domain method.Transmission enhancement and self-collimation phenomena in such device were achieved.The grating in incidence surface contributed to the transmission enhancement,and the grating in exit surface affected on far-field distribution of intensity.The number and the depth of the dented grooves in the grating had optimum parameters.The relation between transmission intensity and sub-wavelength slit depth had periodicity characteristic.

Abstract:Subwavelength constraints and propagation distance contradiction in surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waveguide are currently the key issues. This study based on symmetric dielectric waveguide structures is designed for loaded glass SPPs to propagate optimization devices. The SPPs and Kretschmann model with similar structure are achieved without sacrificing the size of subwavelength waveguide and propagation distance of SPPs. FDTD analysis results show that improved waveguide structure of SPPs can significantly increase the propagation distance to 20-folds and improve the electric field strength. Comparative film layers of different thicknesses be seen as well. The film is the thinnest with best localization. The improved structure significantly increased the coupling effect of SPPs. This structure for SPPs in new photonic devices, broadband communications systems, small photon loops, and other aspects of integrated optoelectronic applications provide critical devices.

Abstract:Unidirectional surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have been proven to truly exist at an interface between a magnetized semiconductor and an opaque isotropic material, however, they suffer rather serious leakage loss (with propagation length shorter than two wavelengths) caused by nonlocality. In this work, we investigate an alternative category of unidirectional SPPs existing on a nonreciprocal plasmonic platform with a cladding composed of a dielectric heterostructure transversely terminated by metal. This unidirectional SPP mode exists for small wavenumbers within the entire upper bulk-mode bandgap of the magnetized semiconductor, hence it is robust against nonlocal effects over a broad band. In contrast to previous unidirectional SPPs, the leakage loss of the present unidirectional SPPs is significantly reduced by more than five times, since the portion of modal energy distributed in the cladding is substantially increased. A similar reduction in absorption losses associated with semiconductor dissipation is observed. Though the nonlocality induces a backward-propagating SPP with extremely large wavenumbers, it can be suppressed even at very small level of dissipation. Therefore, our proposed plasmonic waveguide actually exhibits exceptional unidirectional characteristics.

Abstract:The quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) provides a new route for optically transparent electronic devices. The dispersion curves can control the electromagnetic wave propagation characteristics of the quasi-1D SSPP by manipulating the geometric parameters. However, the dispersion curves of quasi-1D SSPP have not been analytically derived and thoroughly studied. This paper derives the dispersion curves of the quasi-1D SSPP using equivalent permittivity and permeability methods, which can accurately predict the relationship between wave number and its geometric parameters. The simulation results validate the proposed dispersion curves. Based on the dispersion curves, this paper further presents a broadband optically transparent transmission line, which can achieve high-efficiency transmission from 3.0 to 14.4 GHz.

Abstract:Metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguides with subwavelength apertures exhibit unique properties that are considered breakthroughs in surface plasma technology. In this paper, we established a surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode of MIM structure as well as a theoretical model of reflectivity and excitation coefficients to clarify the SPP mode structure. During simulation calculations, attenuation of the TM ground state mode with large-thickness dielectrics is over the oscillation mode, which is obviously different from the traditional dielectric waveguide. The TE mode exhibits characteristics of anamorphic dielectric optical waveguides, and its propagation distance is longer than that of the TM0 mode. With increasing length, the cavity quality factor Q increases, which indicates that the SPP reflection is limited. The quality factor of the cavity and the end-face have a close relationship. MIM waveguides with larger Q values can produce optical waves coupled with the SPP mode. In this paper, we analyzed SPP propagation constants and attenuation coefficients to promote the development of an integrated surface plasmon.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) propagating at metal nanostructures play an important role in breaking the diffraction limit. Chemically synthesized single-crystalline metal nanoplates with atomically flat surfaces provide favorable features compared with traditional polycrystalline metal films. The excitation and propagation of leaky SPPs on micrometer sized (10–20 μm) and thin (30 nm) gold nanoplates are investigated utilizing leakage radiation microscopy. By varying polarization and excitation positions of incident light on apexes of nanoplates, wave-vector (including propagation constant and propagation direction) distributions of leaky SPPs in Fourier planes can be controlled, indicating tunable SPP propagation. These results hold promise for potential development of chemically synthesized single-crystalline metal nanoplates as plasmonic platforms in future applications.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have attracted intensive attention for the unprecedented developments of light–matter interactions in optics and photonics, providing a feasible method for light confinement and transmission at a subwavelength scale. However, SPPs traditionally suffer from large losses due to the intrinsic dissipations and absorptions, which hinder further development and applications of SPPs. Here, we theoretically and experimentally investigate the concept of stepped waveguide metamaterials behaving as low-loss effective replicas of SPPs. The proposed structure without natural plasmonic material maintains the identical field configuration to that in regular SPP but avoids the inherent losses, outperforming regular low-loss SPP design with natural plasmonic materials on SPP propagation lengths. Furthermore, stepped waveguide metamaterial exhibits excellent compatibility in direct interconnections with arbitrary regular SPP and potentially represents a feasible route toward new SPP devices with low-loss advantages.

Abstract:Based on the transfer matrix method and the finite-difference time-domain analysis, we investigate the propagation and scattering of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in a quasiperiodic metal heterowaveguide. By selecting appropriate thickness of the defect layer, the two SPP modes can be adjusted to localize at around 1310 and 1550nm simultaneously. The numerical results reveal that the realization of miniaturized photonic devices is feasible at the two important telecommunicate wavelengths. The structure can be applied to the double-band plasmon Bragg reflector, double-channel light emitters and filters.

Abstract:We show theoretically that a complete band gap for surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) can exist in a flat metal surface coated with a two-dimensional periodic array of dielectric cylinders. Based on the SPP band gap, gap-governed SPP waveguides, bends and splitters at telecom wavelengths can be achieved by introducing line defects. Numerical simulations show that the proposed SPP waveguides have a very low loss, while SPP bends and splitters can bend and split guided SPPs efficiently. The proposed SPP waveguides, bends and splitters could thus be exploited to construct compact integrated optical circuits in the emerging field of plasmonics.

Abstract:Electrically excited surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) created, for instance, through the energy loss from inelastic electron tunneling, have received great interest recently because of their potential for facilitating the integration of on-chip information processing elements. Consequently, finding a convenient method of realizing the propagation control of such a kind of SPPs becomes a valuable research topic. Optical antennas array, with a relatively large footprint, are commonly used for steering SPPs. In this paper, with the aid of two plasmonic strip-type antennas that are placed next to each other, we present a feasible method of propagation control of electrically driven SPPs in a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) system. Results show that STM-induced SPPs propagate along a preferred direction due to the in-plane SPP interference effects, which can be easily engineered by the widths of the antennas. This result is very useful for compact plasmonic circuits design.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have sparked enormous interest on nanophotonics beyond the diffraction limit for their remarkable capabilities of subwavelength confinements and strong enhancements. Due to the inherent polarization sensitivity of the SPPs [transverse-magnetic (TM) polarization], it is a great challenge to couple the s-polarized free-space light to the SPPs. Here, an ultrasmall defect aperture (<(2)/2) is designed to directionally couple both the p- and s-polarized incident beams to the single SPP mode in a broad bandwidth, which is guided by a subwavelength plasmonic waveguide. Simulations show that hot spots emerge at the sharp corners of the defect aperture when the incident beams illuminate it from the back side. The strong radiative fields from the hot spots are directionally coupled to the SPP mode because of the symmetry breaking of the defect aperture. By adjusting the structural parameters, both the unidirectional and bidirectional SPP coupling from the two orthogonal linear-polarization incident beams are experimentally demonstrated. The polarization-free coupling of the SPPs is of importance in circuits for fully optical processing of information with a deep-subwavelength footprint.

Abstract:In microwave and terahertz frequency band, a textured metal surface can support spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs). In this paper, we explore a SSPPs waveguide composed of a metal block with pyramidal grooves. Under the deep subwavelength condition, theoretical formulas for calculation of dispersion relations are derived based on the modal expansion method (MEM). Using the obtained formulas, a general analysis is given about the properties of the SSPPs in the waveguides with upright and downward pyramidal grooves. It is demonstrated that the SSPPs waveguides with upright pyramidal grooves give better field-confinement. Numerical simulations are used to check the theoretical analysis and show good agreement with the analytical results. In addition, the group velocity of the SSPPs propagating along the waveguide is explored and two structures are designed to show how to trap the SSPPs on the metal surface. The calculation methodology provided in this paper can also be used to deal with the SSPPs waveguides with irregular grooves.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons and phonon polaritons offer a means of surpassing the diffraction limit of conventional optics and facilitate efficient energy storage, local field enhancement, high sensitivities, benefitting from their subwavelength confinement of light. Unfortunately, losses severely limit the propagation decay length, thus restricting the practical use of polaritons. While optimizing the fabrication technique can help circumvent the scattering loss of imperfect structures, the intrinsic absorption channel leading to heat production cannot be eliminated. Here, we utilize synthetic optical excitation of complex frequency with virtual gain, synthesized by combining the measurements taken at multiple real frequencies, to restore the lossless propagations of phonon polaritons with significantly reduced intrinsic losses. The concept of synthetic complex frequency excitation represents a viable solution to compensate for loss and would benefit applications including photonic circuits, waveguiding and plasmonic/phononic structured illumination microscopy.

Abstract:We suggest a scheme for the lossless excitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) at a metal-dielectric interface using a Laguerre Gaussian (LG) beam. We consider a three-layer structure consisting of a top transparent medium, a middle metal thin film, and a dielectric bottom layer. The dielectric medium contains three-level atoms exhibiting electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). By applying a control field, a LG beam, and a microwave field, we induce azimuthally varying permittivity, which leads to the azimuthal modulation of SPPs. The propagation length of SPPs is increased when excited by a LG beam carrying optical angular momentum (OAM). Moreover, the group velocity of SPPs can be effectively controlled by adjusting the OAM and azimuthal angle of the LG beam, allowing for both slow and fast propagation of SPPs.

Unidirectional Propagation of Surface Plasmons under Active Control

Abstract:We proposed a symmetric V-type slit array to tune the propagation direction of surface plasmon polaritons by external control of the polarization and/or the inclination angle of the incident light. Using theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, we studied the position-related phase and spin-related phase of the SPPs excited by an inclined and circularly polarized light through a column of slits to determine the parameter of the structure. The results showed that we can tune the propagation of the SPPs with significant flexibility, by changing the polarization of the incident light and the inclination angle of the incident light. Furthermore, a nanostructures were designed to control directional launching of surface plasmons based on the principle of optical spin’s effect for the geometric phase of light. The propagation direction of the generated SPPs can be controlled by the spin of photons. The total size of the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) launcher is 320 nm by 180 nm, which is far smaller than the wavelength of the incident light. This result may provide a new way of spin-controlled directional launching of SPP.

Abstract:A long-range surface plasmon polariton (LRSPP) waveguide consisting of a 15 nm thick gold stripe embedded in a homogeneous polymer BCB is reported. LRSPPs are excited by TM-mode input light successfully using an end-lire method. By scanning the output coupling fibre, the near field of the LRSPP is measured. The propagation loss of as low as 2.34 dB/mm is demonstrated.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an ultra-thin spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) structure, periodically loaded with trapezoidal grooves. Compared to the reported SPPs with rectangular grooves, the proposed SPPs structure can support the guided surface SPP wave with enlarged propagation constant, which implies an enhanced confinement of surface wave along the spoof SPPs structure. Guided-wave characteristics of the proposed SPPs structure are theoretically investigated by virtue of a numerical short-open calibration (SOC) technique. The results show that the loss of spoof SPPs is lower than that in other reported spoof SPPs structures. Experiment on prototype in microwave frequency regime is carried out which validates the theoretical findings. It is believed that the proposed structure could be scaled to THz frequencies, and is very promising in developing the miniaturized planar surface plasmonic devices and circuitry.

Abstract:Spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on a real metal film with periodic cut-through slits are investigated theoretically at terahertz frequencies. For both symmetric and antisymmetric modes of spoof SPPs on the film, the propagation length is severely limited by the absorbing loss in the metal when the fields are highly confined. By stuffing the slits with dielectric slabs thicker than the film, the propagation length of spoof SPPs is greatly increased under the subwavelength field confinement, especially for the antisymmetric mode. This improvement of the modal behavior is explained physically.
