Abstract:Fix $k,s,n\in \mathbb N$, and consider non-zero integers $c_1,\ldots ,c_s$, not all of the same sign. Provided that $s\ge k(k+1)$, we establish a Hasse principle for the existence of lines having integral coordinates lying on the affine diagonal hypersurface defined by the equation $c_1x_1^k+\ldots +c_sx_s^k=n$. This conclusion surmounts the conventional convexity barrier tantamount to the square-root cancellation limit for this problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a family of rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles and show that every rational map whose Julia set is a Cantor set of circles must be topologically conjugate to one map in this family on their corresponding Julia sets. In particular, we give the specific expressions of some rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles, but they are not topologically conjugate to any McMullen maps on their Julia sets. Moreover, some non-hyperbolic rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles are also constructed.

Abstract: By using analytic method, we prove that there exist rational curves on compact Hermitian manifolds with positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. It confirms a question of S.-T. Yau. It is well-known that Mori proved in \cite{Mori79} that every compact complex manifold $N$ with $c_1(N)>0$ contains at least one rational curve. However, as a borderline example, we show that the standard Hopf surface $S^1\times S^3$ has a Hermitian metric with non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature (in particular, $c_1(S^1\times S^3)\geq 0$), but it contains no rational curve.

Abstract:We show that any rational cubic hypersurface of dimension at least 33 vanishes on a projective rational line, reducing the previous lower bound of Wooley by two. The main ingredient is a result on linear spaces on quadratic forms over suitable imaginary quadratic field extensions of $\mathbb Q$.

Abstract:We study the geometry of the space of rational curves on smooth complete intersections of low degree, which pass through a given set of points on the variety. The argument uses spreading out to a finite field, together with an adaptation to function fields of positive characteristic of work by Rydin Myerson on the circle method. Our work also allows us to handle weak approximation for such varieties.

Abstract:We show that a very general hypersurface of degree d at least 4 and dimension at most $(d+1)2^{d-4}$ over a field of characteristic different from 2 does not admit a decomposition of the diagonal; hence, it is neither stably nor retract rational, nor $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected. Similar results hold in characteristic 2 under a slightly weaker degree bound. This improves earlier results by the second named author and Moe.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with rational curves on real classical groups. Our contributions are three-fold: (i) We determine the structure of quadratic rational curves on real classical groups. As a consequence, we completely classify quadratic rational curves on $\mathrm{U}_n$, $\mathrm{O}_n(\mathbb{R})$, $\mathrm{O}_{n-1,1}(\mathbb{R})$ and $\mathrm{O}_{n-2,2}(\mathbb{R})$. (ii) We prove a decomposition theorem for rational curves on real classical groups, which can be regarded as a non-commutative generalization of the fundamental theorem of algebra and partial fraction decomposition. (iii) As an application of (i) and (ii), we generalize Kempe's Universality Theorem to rational curves on homogeneous spaces.

Curve classes on conic bundle threefolds and applications to rationality

Abstract:We undertake a study of conic bundle threefolds $\pi\colon X\to W$ over geometrically rational surfaces whose associated discriminant covers $\tilde{\Delta}\to\Delta\subset W$ are smooth and geometrically irreducible. First, we determine the structure of the group $\mathrm{CH}^2 X_{\overline{k}}$ of rational equivalence classes of curves. Precisely, we construct a Galois-equivariant group homomorphism from $\mathrm{CH}^2X_{\overline{k}}$ to a group scheme associated to the discriminant cover $\tilde{\Delta}\to \Delta$ of $X$. The target group scheme is a generalization of the Prym variety of $\tilde{\Delta}\to\Delta$ and so our result can be viewed as a generalization of Beauville's result that the algebraically trivial curve classes on $X_{\overline{k}}$ are parametrized by the Prym variety. We apply our structural result on curve classes to study the refined intermediate Jacobian torsor (IJT) obstruction to rationality introduced by Hassett--Tschinkel and Benoist--Wittenberg. The first case of interest is $W = \mathbb P^2$ and $\Delta$ is a smooth plane quartic. In this case, we show that the IJT obstruction characterizes rationality when the ground field has less arithmetic complexity (precisely, when the $2$-torsion in the Brauer group of the ground field is trivial). We also show that a hypothesis of this form is necessary by constructing, over any $k \subset\mathbb R$, a conic bundle threefold with $\Delta$ a smooth quartic where the IJT obstruction vanishes, yet $X$ is irrational over $k$.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been a development in approaching rationality problems through motivic methods (cf. [Kontsevich--Tschinkel'19], [Nicaise--Shinder'19], [Nicaise--Ottem'21]). This method requires the explicit construction of degeneration families of curves with favorable properties. While the specific construction is generally difficult, [Nicaise--Ottem'22] combines combinatorial methods to construct degeneration families of hypersurfaces in toric varieties and mentions the stable rationality of a very general hypersurface in projective spaces. In this paper, we substitute mock toric varieties for toric varieties and we prove the following theorem from the motivic method: If a very general hypersurface of degree $d$ in $\mathbb{P}^{2n-5}_\mathbb{C}$ is not stably rational, then a very general hypersurface of degree $d$ in $\mathrm{Gr}_\mathbb{C}(2, n)$ is not stably rational.

Abstract:We construct a large new family of rational algebraic curves in the complex projective plane with a (p,q) cusp singularity. More precisely, we classify all such pairs (p,q) for curves which are rigid (in a suitable sense), finding a phase transition from discrete to continuous as the ratio p/q crosses the fourth power of the golden ratio. In particular, for many values of (p,q), our curves solve the minimal degree problem for plane curves with a (p,q) cusp singularity. Our technique relies on (i) explicit bijections between curves in log Calabi-Yau surfaces and curves in nontoric blowups of toric surfaces, (ii) the tropical vertex group and its connections with relative Gromov--Witten invariants, and (iii) recent positivity results for scattering diagrams. As our main application, we completely solve the stabilized symplectic embedding problem for four-dimensional ellipsoids into the four-dimensional round ball. The answer is neatly encoded in a single piecewise smooth function which transitions from an infinite Fibonacci staircase to an explicit rational function. Many of our results also extend to other target spaces, e.g. del Pezzo surfaces and more general rational surfaces.

We survey recent advances in two of them, the descent and the fibration method, in a number-theoretical context (rational points over number fields) and in an algebro-geometric one (rational curves on real varieties), and discuss the question of rational points over function fields of p-adic curves.

Abstract:We study properties of rational curves on complete intersections in positive characteristic. It has long been known that in characteristic 0, smooth Calabi–Yau and general type varieties are not uniruled. In positive characteristic, however, there are well-known counterexamples to this statement. We will show that nevertheless, a general Calabi–Yau or general type complete intersection in projective space is not uniruled. We will also show that the space of complete intersections of degree (d1,⋯,dk) containing a rational curve has codimension at least ∑i=1kdi−2n+2 and give similar results for hypersurfaces containing higher genus curves.

Abstract:Given $\eta=\begin{pmatrix} a&b\\c&d \end{pmatrix}\in \text{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q})$, we consider the number of rational points on the genus one curve \[H_\eta:y^2=(a(1-x^2)+b(2x))^2+(c(1-x^2)+d(2x))^2.\] We prove that the set of $\eta$ for which $H_\eta(\mathbb{Q})\neq\emptyset$ has density zero, and that if a rational point $(x_0,y_0)\in H_\eta(\mathbb{Q})$ exists, then $H_\eta(\mathbb{Q})$ is infinite unless a certain explicit polynomial in $a,b,c,d,x_0,y_0$ vanishes. Curves of the form $H_\eta$ naturally occur in the study of configurations of points in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with rational distances between them. As one example demonstrating this framework, we prove that if a line through the origin in $\mathbb{R}^2$ passes through a rational point on the unit circle, then it contains a dense set of points $P$ such that the distances from $P$ to each of the three points $(0,0)$, $(0,1)$, and $(1,1)$ are all rational. We also prove some results regarding whether a rational number can be expressed as a sum or product of slopes of rational right triangles.

Abstract:Let $X \subset \mathbb{P}(w_0, w_1, w_2, w_3)$ be a quasismooth well-formed weighted projective hypersurface and let $L = lcm(w_0,w_1,w_2,w_3)$. We characterize when $X$ is rational under the assumption that $L$ divides $deg(X)$ by combining an algebraic proof of rationality valid in all dimensions with a new result on numerical semigroups. As applications, we give new examples of families of normal projective rational varieties with quotient singularities and ample canonical divisor; we also determine precisely which affine Pham-Brieskorn threefolds are rational.

Negative Curves and Elliptic Fibrations on a Special Rational Surface

Abstract:The blown up complex projective plane in the twelve triple points of the dual Hesse arrangement has an infinite number of irreducible rational curves of self-intersection $-1$, for short, $(-1)$-curves. In the preprint version of [Dumnicki, 2019], T. Szemberg et alii tried to keep track of plane rational curves which produce $(-1)$-curves, by applying successively to a straight line compositions taken from three different quadratic Cremona maps preserving the dual Hesse arrangement, in such a way as to produce a diagram of bifurcations. The symmetric aspect of the degrees of curves encoded in the entries of the diagram motivated them to propose the problem of to give a closed formula for the degree of the rational curve at the entry $a_{i,j}$. We solved this problem for a slightly different diagram of bifurcations of the same Cremona maps, which recover and extends the data on degrees of the original diagram. We also are able to describe the position and multiplicites of singularities of each rational curve encoded in the diagram, as well as their equations (implemented in Python and Singular softwares). Our idea is to embed the plane rational curves as components of special elements of elliptic pencils, then apply a closed formula for the degrees of the generic curves of the elliptic pencils of [Puchuri, 2013], and, from this, extract the data of the rational curves on each entry of the diagram.

Abstract:There is a long standing conjecture in Hamiltonian analysis which claims that there exist at least n geometrically distinct closed characteristics on every compact convex hypersurface in R2n with n≥2. In [23], Y. Long and C. Zhu proved there exist at least ϱn(Σ) geometrically distinct closed characteristics on every compact convex hypersurface Σ in R2n. In this paper, we proved that if a compact convex hypersurface Σ in R2n satisfies ϱn(Σ)=n and carries exactly n geometrically distinct closed characteristics, then there are at least two irrationally elliptic closed characteristics on Σ. In particular, if a compact convex hypersurface Σ in R2n all of whose prime closed characteristics are non-degenerate carries exactly n geometrically distinct closed characteristics, then there are at least two irrationally elliptic closed characteristics on Σ. By a similar method, the above result holds also for a compact dynamically convex star-shaped hypersurface in R2n.
