Abstract:Knowledge of muscle actions is essential for understanding biomechanics in running. In this study, 17 young runners were investigated at 13 different running speeds. Telemetric surface electromyograms from lower leg muscles were recorded continuously, and they were synchronized with the recordings of 3-dimensional ground reaction forces from a 10-m-long force platform. As expected, the rate of force production and the peak forces increased with increasing running speed. In the lateral forces, there was a short-duration inward force at the beginning of the contact followed by a longer-lasting outward force. The results revealed further the importance of preactivity and eccentric activity of the leg extensor muscles and the role of the hamstring muscles. The preactivity appears to be a preparatory requirement both for the enhancement of electromyographic activity during the braking phase and for timing of muscular action with respect to the ground contact. The increased force production with increased running speed is, furthermore, partly due to high and long-lasting activity of the hip extensor muscles during the contact phase. Methods of Power-Force-Velocity Profiling During Sprint Running: A Narrative Review

Abstract:The ability of the human body to generate maximal power is linked to a host of performance outcomes and sporting success. Power-force-velocity relationships characterize limits of the neuromuscular system to produce power, and their measurement has been a common topic in research for the past century. Unfortunately, the narrative of the available literature is complex, with development occurring across a variety of methods and technology. This review focuses on the different equipment and methods used to determine mechanical characteristics of maximal exertion human sprinting. Stationary cycle ergometers have been the most common mode of assessment to date, followed by specialized treadmills used to profile the mechanical outputs of the limbs during sprint running. The most recent methods use complex multiple-force plate lengths in-ground to create a composite profile of over-ground sprint running kinetics across repeated sprints, and macroscopic inverse dynamic approaches to model mechanical variables during over-ground sprinting from simple time-distance measures during a single sprint. This review outlines these approaches chronologically, with particular emphasis on the computational theory developed and how this has shaped subsequent methodological approaches. Furthermore, training applications are presented, with emphasis on the theory underlying the assessment of optimal loading conditions for power production during resisted sprinting. Future implications for research, based on past and present methodological limitations, are also presented. It is our aim that this review will assist in the understanding of the convoluted literature surrounding mechanical sprint profiling, and consequently improve the implementation of such methods in future research and practice.
The biomechanical characteristics of high-performance endurance running

Abstract:The biomechanical profile of high-level endurance runners may represent a useful model that could be used for developing training programmes designed to improve running style. This study, therefore, sought to compare the biomechanical characteristics of high-performance and recreational runners. Kinematic and kinetic measurements were taken during overground running from a cohort of 14 high-performance (8 male) and 14 recreational (8 male) runners, at four speeds ranging from 3.3 to 5.6 m s-1. Two-way ANOVA analysis was then used to explore group and speed effects and principal component analysis used to explore the interdependence of the tested variables. The data showed the high-performance runners to have a gait style characterised by an increased vertical velocity of the centre of mass and a flight time that was 11% longer than the recreational group. The high-performance group were also observed to adopt a forefoot strike pattern, to contact the ground with their foot closer to their body and to have a larger ankle moment. Importantly, although observed group differences were mostly independent of speed, the tested variables showed a high degree of interdependence suggesting an underlying unitary phenomenon. This is the first study to compare high-performance and recreational runners across a full range of kinematic and kinetic variables. The results suggest that high-performance runners maintain stride length with a prolonged aerial phase, rather than by landing with a more extended knee. These findings motivate future intervention studies that should investigate whether recreational runners could benefit from instruction to decrease shank inclination at foot contact.

Abstract:Running is not unique to humans, but it is seemingly a basic human capacity. This article addresses the evolutionary origins of humans running long distances, the basic physical capability of running, and the neurogenesis of aerobic fitness. This article more specifically speaks to the conditions that set the stage for the act of running, and then looks at brain expression, and longer-term consequences of running within a context of specific morphological features and diverse information molecules that participate in our capacity for running and sport. While causal factors are not known, we do know that physiological factors are involved in running and underlie neural function. Multiple themes about running are discussed in this article, including neurogenesis, neural plasticity, and memory enhancement. Aerobic exercise increases anterior hippocampus size. This expansion is linked to the improvement of memory, which reflects the improvement of learning as a function of running activity in animal studies. Higher fitness is associated with greater expansion, not only of the hippocampus, but of several other brain regions.

Neural influences on sprint running: training adaptations and acute responses

Abstract:Performance in sprint exercise is determined by the ability to accelerate, the magnitude of maximal velocity and the ability to maintain velocity against the onset of fatigue. These factors are strongly influenced by metabolic and anthropometric components. Improved temporal sequencing of muscle activation and/or improved fast twitch fibre recruitment may contribute to superior sprint performance. Speed of impulse transmission along the motor axon may also have implications on sprint performance. Nerve conduction velocity (NCV) has been shown to increase in response to a period of sprint training. However, it is difficult to determine if increased NCV is likely to contribute to improved sprint performance. An increase in motoneuron excitability, as measured by the Hoffman reflex (H-reflex), has been reported to produce a more powerful muscular contraction, hence maximising motoneuron excitability would be expected to benefit sprint performance. Motoneuron excitability can be raised acutely by an appropriate stimulus with obvious implications for sprint performance. However, at rest H-reflex has been reported to be lower in athletes trained for explosive events compared with endurance-trained athletes. This may be caused by the relatively high, fast twitch fibre percentage and the consequent high activation thresholds of such motor units in power-trained populations. In contrast, stretch reflexes appear to be enhanced in sprint athletes possibly because of increased muscle spindle sensitivity as a result of sprint training. With muscle in a contracted state, however, there is evidence to suggest greater reflex potentiation among both sprint and resistance-trained populations compared with controls. Again this may be indicative of the predominant types of motor units in these populations, but may also mean an enhanced reflex contribution to force production during running in sprint-trained athletes. Fatigue of neural origin both during and following sprint exercise has implications with respect to optimising training frequency and volume. Research suggests athletes are unable to maintain maximal firing frequencies for the full duration of, for example, a 100m sprint. Fatigue after a single training session may also have a neural manifestation with some athletes unable to voluntarily fully activate muscle or experiencing stretch reflex inhibition after heavy training. This may occur in conjunction with muscle damage. Research investigating the neural influences on sprint performance is limited. Further longitudinal research is necessary to improve our understanding of neural factors that contribute to training-induced improvements in sprint performance.

Abstract:<span>Running is one of the most popular sport practices in the world. However, to our knowledge, none of the previous research about the characteristics of outdoor running makes a distinction between the different modalities of runners. Sixty-five healthy runners classified in sprinters, middle distance and long-distance runners performed five series of 100 metres on the synthetic outdoor track at competition pace. Muscle activity of lower limb muscles at initial contact and toe-off, involving the gluteus medius (GMED), gluteus maximus (GMAX), biceps femoris (BF), rectus femoris (RF), tiabilis anterior (TA) and medial gastrocnemius (MGAS), and spatiotemporal parameters were analysed. Sprinters showed high percentages of muscle activity at initial contact, in particular, the TA activity was the highest. The RF activity was significantly the lowest activity registered. At toe-off, sprinters showed the highest activity in all muscles analysed. Middle-distance runners had the highest activity of GMAX, BF and MGAS during the initial contact. In long-distance runners, the GMED and RF activity during the initial contact is highlighted, showing the highest activity of this phase. Different patterns of lower limb muscle activity and spatiotemporal parameters exist depending on the modality of the runner.</span>

Abstract:In this review, we examine the literature in light of the mechanical principles that govern linear accelerated running. While the scientific literature concerning sprint mechanics is comprehensive, these principles of fundamental mechanics present some pitfalls which can (and does) lead to misinterpretations of findings. Various models of sprint mechanics, most of which build on the spring–mass paradigm, are discussed with reference to both the insight they provide and their limitations. Although much research confirms that sprinters to some extent behave like a spring–mass system with regard to gross kinematics (step length, step rate, ground contact time, and lower limb deformation), the laws of motion, supported by empirical evidence, show that applying the spring–mass model for accelerated running has flaws. It is essential to appreciate that models are pre-set interpretations of reality; finding that a model describes the motor behaviour well is not proof of the mechanism behind the model. Recent efforts to relate sprinting mechanics to metabolic demands are promising, but have the same limitation of being model based. Furthermore, a large proportion of recent literature focuses on the interaction between total and horizontal (end-goal) force. We argue that this approach has limitations concerning fundamental sprinting mechanics. Moreover, power analysis based on isolated end-goal force is flawed. In closing, some prominent practical concepts and didactics in sprint running are discussed in light of the mechanical principles presented. Ultimately, whereas the basic principles of sprinting are relatively simple, the way an athlete manages the mechanical constraints and opportunities is far more complex.

Abstract:Background The maximal running speed (V MAX ) determined on a graded treadmill test is well-recognized as a running performance predictor. However, few studies have assessed the variables that predict V MAX in recreationally active runners. Methods We used a mathematical procedure combining Fick’s law and metabolic cost analysis to verify the relation between (1) V MAX versus anthropometric and physiological determinants of running performance and, (2) theoretical metabolic cost versus running biomechanical parameters. Linear multiple regression and bivariate correlation were applied. We aimed to verify the biomechanical, physiological, and anthropometrical determinants of V MAX in recreationally active runners. Fifteen recreationally active runners participated in this observational study. A Conconi and a stead-steady running test were applied using a heart rate monitor and a simple video camera to register the physiological and mechanical variables, respectively. Results Statistical analysis revealed that the speed at the second ventilatory threshold, theoretical metabolic cost, and fat-mass percentage confidently estimated the individual running performance as follows: V MAX = 58.632 + (−0.183 * fat percentage) + (−0.507 * heart rate percentage at second ventilatory threshold) + (7.959 * theoretical metabolic cost) (R 2 = 0.62, p = 0.011, RMSE = 1.50 km.h −1 ). Likewise, the theoretical metabolic cost was significantly explained (R 2 = 0.91, p = 0.004, RMSE = 0.013 a.u.) by the running spatiotemporal and elastic-related parameters (contact and aerial times, stride length and frequency, and vertical oscillation) as follows: theoretical metabolic cost = 10.421 + (4.282 * contact time) + (−3.795 * aerial time) + (−2.422 * stride length) + (−1.711 * stride frequency) + (0.107 * vertical oscillation). Conclusion Critical determinants of elastic mechanism, such as maximal vertical force and vertical and leg stiffness were unrelated to the metabolic economy. V MAX , a valuable marker of running performance, and its physiological and biomechanical determinants can be effectively evaluated using a heart rate monitor, treadmill, and a digital camera, which can be used in the design of training programs to recreationally active runners.

Abstract:Abstract. Walking and running, the two basic gaits used by man, are very complex movements. They can, however, be described using two simple models: an inverted pendulum and a spring. Muscles must contract at each step to move the body segments in the proper sequence but the work done is, in part, relieved by the interplay of mechanical energies, potential and kinetic in walking, and elastic in running. This explains why there is an optimal speed of walking (minimal metabolic cost of about 2 J.kg–1·m–1 at about 1.11 m.s–1) and why the cost of running is constant and independent of speed (about 4 J.kg–1.m–1). Historically, the mechanical work of locomotion has been divided into external and internal work. The former is the work done to raise and accelerate the body centre of mass (m) within the environment, the latter is the work done to accelerate the body segments with respect to the centre of m. The total work has been calculated, somewhat arbitrarily, as the sum of the two. While the changes of potential and kinetic energies can be accurately measured, the contribution of the elastic energy cannot easily be assessed, nor can the true work performed by the muscles. Many factors can affect the work of locomotion - the gradient of the terrain, body size (height and body m), and gravity. The partitioning of positive and negative work and their different efficiencies explain why the most economical gradient is about –10% (1.1 J.kg–1.m–1 at 1.3 m.s–1 for walking, and 3.1 J.kg–1.m–1 at between 3 and 4 m·s–1 for running). The mechanics of walking of children, pigmies and dwarfs, in particular the recovery of energy at each step, is not different from that of taller (normal sized) individuals when the speed is expressed in dynamically equivalent terms (Froude number). An extra load, external or internal (obesity) affects internal and external work according to the distribution of the added m. Different gravitational environments determine the optimal speed of walking and the speed of transition from walking to running: at more than 1 g it is easier to walk than to run, and it is the opposite at less than 1 g. Passive aids, such as skis or skates, allow an increase in the speed of progression, but the mechanics of the locomotion cannot be simply described using the models for walking and running because step frequency, the proportion of step duration during which the foot is in contact with the ground, the position of the limbs, the force exerted on the ground and the time of its application are all different.

Abstract:This review describes how computational modeling can be combined with noninvasive gait measurements to describe and explain muscle and joint function in human locomotion. Five muscles—the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, vasti, soleus, and gastrocnemius—contribute most significantly to the accelerations of the center of mass in the vertical, fore-aft, and medio-lateral directions when humans walk and run at their preferred speeds. Humans choose to switch from a walk to a run at speeds near 2 m s −1 to enhance the biomechanical performance of the ankle plantarflexors and to improve coordination of the knee and ankle muscles during stance. Muscles that do not span a joint can contribute to the contact force transmitted by that joint and therefore affect its stability. In walking, for example, uniarticular muscles that cross the hip and ankle act to create the adduction moment at the knee, thereby contributing to the contact force present in the medial compartment.

Abstract:PURPOSE: Aging diminishes the ability to run fast, but the specific mechanisms responsible for this deterioration remain largely unknown. In the present study, we investigated the age-related decline in sprint running ability through a cross-sectional examination of biomechanical and skeletal muscle characteristics in 77 competitive male sprinters aged 17-82 yr.METHODS: Ground reaction force (GRF) and kinematic stride cycle parameters were measured during the maximum-velocity phase using a 9.4-m-long force platform. Knee extensor (KE) and ankle plantar flexor (PF) structural characteristics were investigated using ultrasonography and muscle biopsies (vastus lateralis). Force production characteristics of leg extensor muscles were determined by dynamic and isometric contractions.RESULTS: The main findings were as follows: 1) the progressive age-related decline in maximum running velocity (Vmax) was mainly related to a reduction in stride length (Lstr) and an increase in ground contact time (tc), whereas stride frequency showed a minor decline and swing time remained unaffected; 2) the magnitude of average braking and push-off resultant GRFs declined with age and associated with Lstr, tc, and Vmax; 3) there was an age-related decline in muscle thickness, Type II fiber area and maximal and rapid force-generating capacity of the lower limb muscles; and 4) muscle thickness (KE + PF) was a significant predictor of braking GRF, whereas the countermovement jump height explained most of the variance in push-off GRF in stepwise regression analysis.CONCLUSIONS: Age-related slowing of maximum running speed was characterized by a decline in stride length and an increase in contact time along with a lower magnitude of GRFs. The sprint-trained athletes demonstrated an age-related selective muscular atrophy and reduced force capacity that contributed to the deterioration in sprint running ability with age.

Abstract:In locomotion, the relative phasing of the limbs changes with speed and provides valuable insight to neuromuscular control of gait. At present, it is unknown if individuals trained in sprinting coordinate their limbs differently than runners from other athletic backgrounds. Therefore, we aimed to characterize the effects of speed and skill on lower limb coordination. Twenty-five physically active (PA) and fifteen track and field (TF) athletes performed 40 m running trials at self-selected speeds, from jogging to maximal sprinting. We measured lower limb kinematics during steady-speed running, and quantified coordination using continuous relative phase (CRP) methods for interlimb pairs (Thigh-Thigh, Shank-Shank) and intralimb pairs (Shank-Thigh). Regression techniques showed between-group differences in scaling of coordination with speed during the stance phase, such that coordination was significantly more antiphase during jogging and running speeds in TF. Scaling of coordination during swing was similar, but there were persistent and significant differences in coordination across all speeds. Comparing only the maximal speed trials, we found interlimb coordination was significantly more antiphase for TF in both stance and flight. In all cases, Shank-Shank coordination showed the largest between-group differences. Our results demonstrate the importance of interlimb coordination at maximal sprint speed, particularly during the flight/swing phase and between shank segments. Between-group differences in coordination at slower speeds suggest a selective tuning of coordination in trained runners. We speculate differences in limb coordination are due to acquired motor patterns from optimizing forward velocity and its mechanical determinants, which differ particularly during flight/swing and between shank segments.

Abstract:This study tested interactions between age and running speed on biomechanics, metabolic responses and cardiopulmonary responses. Three-hundred participants ran at preferred and standardized speeds. Age group (younger, masters [40years]) by speed (self-selected 8.8km/h, 11.2km/h and 13.6km/h) interactions were tested on main outcomes of sagittal kinematic, temporal spatial, metabolic and cardiopulmonary parameters. At all speeds, angular displacements of the ankle, pelvis and knee were less in masters than younger runners (Hedges g effect size range=0.30-1.04; all p<0.05). A significant age group by speed interaction existed for hip angular displacement (Wald (2)=10.753; p=0.013). Masters runners ran at higher relative heart rates (p<0.05) but at similar rates of oxygen use and energy expenditure. Masters runners used hip-dominant motion and step lengthening as running speed increased, but did not change centre of mass vertical displacement. This may increase mechanical stresses on tissues of the lower extremity in masters runners, especially hamstrings, hip joint and Achilles.
Running biomechanics as measured by wearable sensors: effects of speed and surface

Abstract:Running biomechanics research has traditionally occurred in the laboratory, but with the advent of wearable sensors measurement of running biomechanics may shift outside the laboratory. The purpose was to determine if RunScribe™ wearable sensors could detect differences in kinematic, kinetic and spatiotemporal measures during runs at two speeds and on two different surfaces. Fifteen recreational runners (7 males, 8 females; age = 20.0 ± 3.1 years) participated. While wearing sensors on the heels of their shoes, participants completed four 1600 m runs on both track and grass surfaces. On each surface, the first 1600 m was at a self-selected slow speed followed by the second 1600 m at a self-selected fast pace. The sensors quantified several kinetic, kinematic and spatiotemporal measures. Repeated measures ANOVAs compared the effects of surface and speed. The spatiotemporal measures of stride length, cycle time and contact time were predictably affected by increased running speed and increased surface stiffness, as were the kinematic and kinetic measurements of maximum pronation velocity, maximum pronation excursion, impact g, and braking g (p < 0.050). The RunScribe™ sensors identified expected changes in running biomechanics measures at different speeds and on varying surfaces.
Muscle-Tendon Unit Properties in Mice Bred for High Levels of Voluntary Running: Novel Physiologies, Coadaptation, Trade-Offs, and Multiple Solutions in the Evolution of Endurance Running

Abstract:AbstractMuscle-tendon unit (MTU) morphology and physiology are likely major determinants of locomotor performance and therefore Darwinian fitness. However, the relationships between underlying traits, performance, and fitness are complicated by phenomena such as coadaptation, multiple solutions, and trade-offs. Here, we leverage a long-running artificial selection experiment in which mice have been bred for high levels of voluntary running to explore MTU adaptation, as well as the role of coadaptation, multiple solutions, and trade-offs, in the evolution of endurance running. We compared the morphological and contractile properties of the triceps surae complex, a major locomotor MTU, in four replicate selected lines to those of the triceps surae complex in four replicate control lines. All selected lines have lighter and shorter muscles, longer tendons, and faster muscle twitch times than all control lines. Absolute and normalized maximum shortening velocities and contractile endurance vary across selected lines. Selected lines have similar or lower absolute velocities and higher endurance than control lines. However, normalized shortening velocities are both higher and lower in selected lines than in control lines. These findings potentially show an interesting coadaptation between muscle and tendon morphology and muscle physiology, highlight multiple solutions for increasing endurance running performance, demonstrate that a trade-off between muscle speed and endurance can arise in response to selection, and suggest that a novel physiology may sometimes allow this trade-off to be circumvented.

Abstract:Understanding the distinct functions of human muscles could not only help professionals obtain insights into the underlying mechanisms that we accommodate compromised neuromuscular system, but also assist engineers in developing rehabilitation devices. This study aims to determine the contribution of major muscle and the energy flow in the human musculoskeletal system at four sub-phases (collision, rebound, preload, push-off) during the stance of walking at different speeds. Gait experiments were performed with three self-selected speeds: slow, normal, and fast. Muscle forces and mechanical work were calculated by using a subject-specified musculoskeletal model. The functions of individual muscles were characterized as four functional behaviors (strut, spring, motor, damper), which were determined based on the mechanical energy. The results showed that during collision, hip flexors (iliacus and psoas major) and ankle dorsiflexors (anterior tibialis) were the most dominant muscles in buffering the stride with energy absorption; during rebound, the posterior muscles (gluteus maximus, gastrocnemius, posterior tibialis, soleus) contributed the most to energy generation; during preload, energy for preparing push-off was mainly absorbed by the muscles surrounding knee (vastus, semimembranosus, semitendinosus); during push-off, ankle plantar flexors (gastrocnemius, soleus, posterior tibialis, peroneus muscles, flexor digitorum, flexor hallucis) mainly behaved to generate energy for forward propulsion. With increased walking speed, additional energy (almost 400%) from harder stride was mainly absorbed by the flexor muscles. Hip extensors and adductors transferred more energy (around 150%) to the distal segments during rebound. Soleus and gastrocnemius muscles generated more energy (about 75%) to the proximal segments for propulsion. Along with our previous study of joint-level ener- y analysis, these findings could assist better understanding of human musculoskeletal behaviors during locomotion and provide principles for the bio-design of related assistive devices from motors performance enhancement to rehabilitation such as exoskeleton and prosthesis.
