Abstract:1. The studies included cultural landscapes of simple (agricultural land) and complex (forest) structure in Wielkopolska. 2. The goal of the studies was to define biocoenotic function of marginal habitats such as – shrubs, field border, road borders, and forest edges – structural elements of agricultural landscape making suitable habitats for parasitoid hymenoptera of subfamily Pimplinae (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) 3. The authors wanted to establish: i. which of marginal habitats are most attractive for Pimplinae; ii. which of these habitats are similar to forest habitats, due to the qualitative and quantitative structure of parasitoid hymenoptera communities living there; and iii. whether linear marginal habitats (like road sides) can fulfil the function of ecological corridors for parasitoid hymenoptera, between agricultural and forest habitats. 4. The species diversity of Pimplinae in all the habitats of agricultural landscape and forest environment (national park) was similar. 5. On the forest edges (high heterogeneity landscape), the communities of Pimplinae were most numerous. In the low heterogeneity landscape, the greatest species diversity occurred in shrubs. The majority of Pimplinae populations living in agricultural landscape and forest showed great similarity in their qualitative structure and less similarity in their quantitative structure. 6. The conclusion can be made that marginal habitats of agricultural landscape make attractive environment for parasitoids of Pimplinae and that vegetation alongside roads can make function as ecological corridors.

THE HABITAT OF ELLIOT'S PHEASANT IN THE LEIGONG MOUNTAIN NATURE RESERVE

Abstract:The studies on the type, character and status of the habitat of Elliot's pheasant had been done in the Leigong Mountain Nature Reserve. The results showed that the evergreen broadleaved forest, dominated by Castanopsis fargesii and Cyclobalanopsis glauca, the evergreen and deciduous broadleaf mixed forest, dominated by Cyclobalanopsis multinervis, Fagus longipetiolata, F. lucida, Manglietia chingii and Lithocarpus sp. and so on, the deciduous broadleaved forest, dominated by F. lucida and Castanea henryi, and the coniferous and broadleaf mixed forest, dominated by Cunninghamia lanceolata and Castanea henryi, could be used by Elliot's pheasant as the habitat. In the Leigong mountain nature reserve, the habitats of Elliot's pheasant were mainly in the areas between 1, 000-1, 900 metres above sea level. The slope of the habitats was usually less than 50 degree. The variations on the vegetation covering character could be found in the different habitats, and the covering character of the vegetation was also related to the needs of the pheasants on the hiding and food and so on in habitats. In the Leigong mountain nature reserve, the serious destruction of the habitat of the pheasant could be found in 8 isolated habitat fragments.
Availability of food resources for pollinators in three types of lowland meadows

Abstract:The availability of floral resources is considered a key factor for the maintenance and conservation of pollinators. We compared the forage floral diversity of three types of lowland meadows (Molinia meadows, tall herb fringe meadows, and hay meadows) located in south eastern Poland. The total number of plant species was 125, including 84 species (67.2%) classified as plants visited by insects. The richness and diversity of forage flora differed between the types of meadow. The Molinia meadows and hay meadows were preferred by pollinators. However, different taxonomic groups of pollinators can respond to the variability and availability of floral resources in a different way. Molinia meadows are of particular importance for the abundance of Bombus spp., solitary bees, and flies. The RDA ordination model demonstrated that the floral community composition, plant species abundance, plant species richness, and floral attributes (size, shape, phenology) were all important for the abundance of insect visitors in the mosaic of meadows. The cluster analysis showed that most plant species were visited by similar groups of insects; however, their proportion differed considerably. Our results present arguments for inclusion of semi-natural meadows into conservation plans and for efforts of protection of highly effective floral resources aimed at maintenance of pollinators.

Structure of Beetles (Coleoptera) in the Conditions of Agriculturally Used Land and Natural Habitat of the European Important Territory of the Dunajské luhy

Abstract:Floodplain forests are among the most threatened ecosystems in Europe, providing specific conditions for many species. The research in floodplain forests in conditions agrarian landscape and in the Dunajské Luhy Protected Landscape Area (important European territory) was conducted. During the years 2020–2022, 2827 individuals of beetles belonging to 93 species at 6 locations representing two types of habitats (willow–poplar floodplain forest, regenerated poplar forest) were recorded. The beetles were collected using the pitfall traps method. Through spatial modeling (redundancy analysis—RDA), we found a strong preference of species for floodplain forests located in the Dunajská Luhy Protected Landscape Area a European important territory, where there was also a predominance of adaptable and relict species. These species prefer a more stable environment and undisturbed ecosystems with a sufficient food optimum. On the contrary, number of species belonging to the eurytopic group correlated with the conditions of the agrarian landscape were recorded. Moreover, these species inhabit ecosystems disturbed by anthropic activity. We also confirmed a significant difference in the number of individuals and species between the use of the landscape (agrarian landscape, Dunajské Luhy). We confirmed a larger number of individuals and species in the Dunajské Luhy PLA (important European territory). Our results bring new information about the negative impact of the agroeciosystem on floodplain forests. In order to preserve the European important floodplain forests in the Dunajské Luhy Protected Landscape Area, it is necessary to know the ecological niches between beetles and ecosystems.

Abstract:The nests of the harvest mouse (Micromys minutus) from an extensively used farmland in Western Poland were recognized as a place of occurrence of a large group of invertebrates. In total, from 42 nests 6,544 individuals of invertebrates were extracted. The number of invertebrates was positively correlated with mass of mouse nests. There were found arthropods belonging to the following groups: Arachnida: spiders, mites and pseudoscorpions; Entognatha: springtails; Insecta: Coleoptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, Psocoptera, Siphonaptera and Thysanoptera. The most numerous groups were mites (Acari, 5,800 individuals) and fleas (Siphonaptera, 415 individuals). Among mites Astigmatida, Mesostigmata and Oribatida were identified. One species, Tyrophagus curvipenis (Acari: Astigmatina), was found in Poland for the first time. The study clearly showed that nests of the harvest mouse are often inhabited by invertebrates, and looks like some of them are characteristic to this particular kind of habitat.

Peat mine as a threat to the diversity of aquatic beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) in the protected area Nature 2000 in Poland

Abstract:Peatlands, shaped by centuries of human activities, now face a primary threat from mining activities. Vulnerable to drainage and hydrological instability, peatland areas encounter challenges that compromise their ecological integrity. This study hypothesised that permanent water reservoirs within mines could serve as refugia for water beetles from adjacent areas prone to drying in the summer. Employing standard methods, including entomological scraping and water traps, samples were collected. Results revealed that, in most cases, water beetles exhibited a preference for the Nature 2000 area untouched by mining. Despite unfavourable conditions, the Nature 2000 area showcased a more diverse water beetle fauna. Remarkably, the selected Nature 2000 area, despite its identified degradation based on flora, remained a biodiversity hotspot for peatland water beetle fauna. The study underscores the significance of assessing insects, particularly beetles, as rapid responders to environmental changes. This evaluation holds crucial implications for peatland restoration planning and decision-making regarding mining investments in proximity to peatland areas.
Influence of landscape features on the location of grey heron Ardea cinerea colonies in Poland

Abstract:We analysed hydrographic and habitat factors influencing the location of 207 colonies of the grey heron Ardea cinerea in Poland. We compared areas of particular habitats in three buffers around colonies (0-1, 0-10, 0-20km) among eight regions differing in their proportions of studied habitats. We found the highest inter-region dissimilarities in areas covered by water bodies (all scales) and pastures (0-1km). We recognized some indicator habitats characteristic of the majority (water bodies, pastures) or of some (seacoast, inland marshes, urbanized zone) regions. The habitat selectivity index showed that grey herons in buffer 0-1km preferred pastures and water bodies in seven regions and rivers in one subprovince. In buffer 0-10km, forests and urban zones were preferred in seven and five subprovinces, respectively. Our study revealed that both aquatic and non-aquatic habitats are important for the distribution of the grey heron colonies in Poland.

Abstract:There is wide recognition that urban green space provides city residents with considerable benefits, inter alia of an environmental, economic and health-related profile. However, the different types of urban greenery include a rather large proportion taking the form of vegetation on abandoned sites that remain uncultivated, to the extent that a plant cover develops without much active human involvement. Almost by definition, there is only a poor level of recognition of the ecological potential such sites (here referred to as “informal green spaces” – IGS) enjoy, or of their capacity to render a variety of different ecosystem services. Against that background, the work presented here entailed in-depth study of the flora and plant communities present in Warsaw’s informal green spaces, the aim being to better ascertain their role in preserving biodiversity and delivering ecosystem services. Specifically, we identified the plant species composition present at 75 different locations within the urban green space of Poland’s capital city. To qualify for consideration, these sites had to be identified as entirely bereft of vegetation maintenance, or else only minimally subject to it, to the extent that it is largely processes of natural succession that are ongoing. The sites in fact range from wastelands with stabilised vegetation, via urban scrub and forest, through to non-forest habitats, sporadically cultivated and established over 20 years. We determined the density of vegetation present, and examined its structure in relation to various known classes of green space. We further determined the role of various vegetation types in rendering ecosystem services, be that surface cooling, substrate moisture maintenance or a capacity to remove particulate matter from the air. The informal green spaces we investigated are in fact found to comprise mainly-stable forest communities dominated by invasive species of tree (phytosociological Classes Robinietea and Salicetea purpureae), as well as non-forest communities (of Classes Molinio-Arrhenatheretea, Epilobietea and Artemisietea) again largely dominated by invasive plant species. The level of biodiversity here is average, it mostly being common forest and non-forest species that are preserved. However, in exceptional cases, the habitats constituted here do support species rare on a regional scale. It emerges that the forest vegetation is of weakly-diversified structure, as a reflection of the specific strategy invasive species pursue as they form monospecific communities. As noted already, the vegetation of the informal green spaces is seen to be largely dominated by such invasive species. Nevertheless, despite their evidently limited role in preserving biodiversity, these sites represent such a high density and volume of vegetation that their provisioning of ecosystem services is on a high level, especially where forest plant communities are involved. Sites that have come to be dominated by invasive plant species are shown to render ecosystem services comparable with (or sometimes even surpassing) those provided by native species, and this is especially the case when it comes to the removal of particulate matter from air and the exerting of a cooling effect.
Changes of the composition of the Noctuoidea fauna along a geographical gradient in the northeastern part of the Carpathian Lowland

Abstract:The northeastern part of the Carpathian Lowland is one of the most species-rich parts of the region, despite the long-term and sometimes extreme changes in land use. The fragmented remains of formerly contiguous forests maintain a significant part of the wildlife living in different oak, mixed oak, and gallery forest, and even faunas of connected grassland habitats. To reveal how the parallel Carpathian and Pannonian effects form the local insect fauna, the Noctuoidea assemblages of eight forest patches were assessed and compared, based on the distribution data of 479 species. Three types of assemblages were designated, with similar diversity but different compositions. The most unique and valuable ones can be found in the colline area of Transcarpathia, where the high habitat diversity supported by the topography promotes the coexistence of the species of humid forest fauna and many steppic and southern elements. The protection and planned management of these remained forest patches and their network in international cooperation can maintain a significant part of the fauna of the affected regions.

The transformation of river ecosystems caused by mining affects bird breeding in indigenous riparian habitats

Abstract:Our study considered the excavation of sand and gravel, which modifies the landscapes of riparian ecosystems. It promotes the creation of water bodies with surrounding vegetation, but it also results in the loss of natural habitats. We investigated the species richness, composition, and abundance of aquatic and terrestrial breeding birds and their interaction with three habitat types: managed and abandoned flooded pits, and oxbow lakes. We surveyed 117 sites in medium-sized river valleys in the foreground of the Bohemian Massif (Czech Republic), and in the Carpathian Mountains (Poland, Slovakia) in 2022. Flooded pits were suitable for open-water and colonial birds. Managed flooded pits were also suitable for early successional land birds, but they did not provide habitat for birds that use marshes and wet meadows, or riparian woodlands. The majority of species preferred to breed in oxbow lakes with riparian forests and these areas hosted the highest number of threatened species. We concluded that high levels of disturbance in riparian ecosystems promoted some birds (e.g. colonial or breeding in early-successional habitats), but it negatively affected the overall bird diversity, and it led to a species composition shift with the elimination of taxa associated with indigenous riparian habitats. The importance of flooded pits increases with subsequent plant succession. Our results indicate that gravel or sand mine pits, although beneficial for some taxa, are not substitutes for natural habitats in riparian ecosystems, as they do not support birds breeding in indigenous riparian habitats. Natural oxbow lakes with riparian forests are habitats that need to be preserved to effectively promote local biodiversity.
Effect of Management of Grassland on Prey Availability and Physiological Condition of Nestling of Red-Backed Shrike Lanius collurio

Abstract:The study aimed to determine the influence of grassland management on the potential food base of the red-backed shrike Lanius collurio and the condition of chicks in the population inhabiting semi-natural grasslands in the Narew floodplain. The grassland area was divided into three groups: extensively used meadows, intensively used meadows fertilised with mineral fertilisers, and intensively used meadows fertilised with liquid manure, and selected environmental factors that may influence food availability were determined. Using Barber traps, 1825 samples containing 53,739 arthropods were collected, and the diversity, abundance, and proportion of large arthropods in the samples were analysed depending on the grassland use type. In the bird population, the condition of the chicks was characterised by the BCI (Body Condition Index) and haematological parameters (glucose level, haemoglobin level, haematocrit, and H:L ratio). The diversity of arthropods was highest in extensively used meadows. Still, the mean abundance and proportion of arthropods over 1 cm in length differed significantly for Orthoptera, Hymenoptera, Arachne, and Carabidae between grassland use types, with the highest proportion of large arthropods and the highest abundance recorded in manure-fertilised meadows. The highest Body Condition Indexes and blood glucose levels of nestlings indicating good nestling nutrition were recorded in nests of birds associated with extensive land use. The H:L ratio as an indicator of the physiological condition of nestlings was high on manure-fertilised and extensively managed meadows, indicating stress factors associated with these environments. This suggests that consideration should be given to the effects of chemicals, such as pesticides or drug residues, that may come from slurry poured onto fields on the fitness of red-backed shrike chicks.
Social information modifies the associations between forest fragmentation and the abundance of a passerine bird

Abstract:Habitat loss and fragmentation are the main factors driving the occurrence and abundance of species in the landscape. However, the local occurrence and abundance of species may also depend on conspecific and heterospecific social information e.g. clues of animals' presence or their voices. We investigated the impact of the interaction between different types of social information and forest fragmentation on the abundance of the song thrush, Turdus philomelos, in Central Europe. Three types of social information (attractive, repulsive, and mixed) and procedural control were broadcasted via loudspeakers in 150 forest patches that varied in size and isolation metrics. Repulsive social information (cues of presence of predator) decreased abundance of song thrush. Also, the repulsive social information changed the association between forest patch isolation, size and the abundance. Attractive social information (songs of the studied thrush) had no effect on song thrush abundance. However, the attractive social information reversed the positive correlation between habitat patch size and the abundance. Mixed social information (both repulsive and attractive) had no impact on the abundance nor interacted with habitat fragmentation. The observed effects mostly did not last to the next breeding season. Overall, our findings indicate that lands of fear and social attraction could modify the effect of habitat fragmentation on the species abundance but these effects probably are not long-lasting.
High temporal resolution data reveal low bat and insect activity over managed meadows in central Europe

Abstract:Increasing agriculture and pesticide use have led to declines in insect populations and biodiversity worldwide. In addition to insect diversity, it is also important to consider insect abundance, due to the importance of insects as food for species at higher trophic levels such as bats. We monitored spatiotemporal variation in abundance of nocturnal flying insects over meadows, a common open landscape structure in central Europe, and correlated it with bat feeding activity. Our most important result was that insect abundance was almost always extremely low. This was true regardless of management intensity of the different meadows monitored. We also found no correlation of insect abundance or the presence of insect swarms with bat feeding activity. This suggests that insect abundance over meadows was too low and insect swarms too rare for bats to risk expending energy to search for them. Meadows appeared to be poor habitat for nocturnal flying insects, and of low value as a foraging habitat for bats. Our study highlights the importance of long-term monitoring of insect abundance, especially at high temporal scales to identify and protect foraging habitats. This will become increasingly important given the rapid decline of insects.

Urban and rural habitats differ in number and type of bird feeders and in bird species consuming supplementary food

Abstract:Bird feeding is one of the most widespread direct interactions between man and nature, and this has important social and environmental consequences. However, this activity can differ between rural and urban habitats, due to inter alia habitat structure, human behaviour and the composition of wintering bird communities. We counted birds in 156 squares (0.25 km(2) each) in December 2012 and again in January 2013 in locations in and around 26 towns and cities across Poland (in each urban area, we surveyed 3 squares and also 3 squares in nearby rural areas). At each count, we noted the number of bird feeders, the number of bird feeders with food, the type of feeders, additional food supplies potentially available for birds (bread offered by people, bins) and finally the birds themselves. In winter, urban and rural areas differ in the availability of food offered intentionally and unintentionally to birds by humans. Both types of food availability are higher in urban areas. Our findings suggest that different types of bird feeder support only those species specialized for that particular food type and this relationship is similar in urban and rural areas.

Abstract:The absence of traditional management in grasslands is responsible for the consequent changes in plant community species composition and diversity of this habitat in Europe. The common reason for these changes is the spread of expansive native species such as Calamagrostis epigejos (L.) Roth and their subsequent dominance over other component species. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of management treatments (e.g., mowing, harvesting biomass) and their frequency of application (e.g., once or twice a year) on the cover abundance of C. epigejos (L.) Roth and the subsequent changes in component grassland species richness and diversity (Shannon–Wiener index) of an abandoned meadow in Silesia in S. Poland. A difference in species richness was found after five years of mowing, but an increase in species diversity appeared only after seven years of the treatments. Significant increases in species richness and Shannon–Wiener index and a significant decrease in cover abundance of C. epigejos (L.) Roth were recorded after different periods and for different treatments.

The effect of nesting habitat on reproductive output of the Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica). A comparative study of populations from atypical and typical nesting habitats in western Poland

Abstract:The aim of this study was to discover if atypical nesting places such as abandoned second world war bomb shelters and conditions occurring within, can constitute suitable and good quality alternative habitat for the Barn Swallow. To answer this question, the time of breeding, clutch size and the mean survival probability of nest contents were compared between swallows nesting in shelters and in farm outbuildings – typical nesting habitat. The study showed that bunkers do constitute a suitable and relatively good quality alternative habitat for the Barn Swallow but they are poorer nesting places than pigsties or cowsheds. Mean survival rate of nest contents (eggs/nestlings) was higher in farm outbuildings than in bunkers, but only differences in the first broods were recorded. The results are most probably the effect of different conditions occurring in the two kinds of nesting habitat, especially at the beginning of the breeding season, when the unfavourable weather conditions can negatively influence breeding swallows to a higher degree in bunkers than in outbuildings.

Abstract:This study, conducted in 2020–2022, was designed to determine the impact of livestock grazing on habitat biodiversity and Carabidae beetles. Two research plots (a meadow and a pasture) were established on a farm in the village of Otapy, located in the agricultural catchment area of the Nurzec River in Eastern Poland. They were located next to each other so that they would possess the same set of atmospheric phenomena and processes shaped by the physical and geographical characteristics of the area. The study showed that the pasture was the richest in terms of the magnesium and calcium contents, while the meadow had significantly higher levels of phosphorus and zinc. The study also showed some differences in the abundance and species composition of plants and animals. The meadow had higher biodiversity, while the pasture was dominated by grasses. A disparity in the abundance of individual species was also presented. The study indicated the preference of individual species for particular forms of land use. Anisodactylus binotatus, Harpalus rufipes and Poecilus cupreus were most abundant in the meadow, while Carabus granulatus and Pterostichus melanarius were mostly represented in the pasture. The number of species, on the other hand, was the same. Our research concluded that proper landscape management through different uses affects plant and beetle diversity and soil element content.

Abstract:Although ponds located in a low-transformed landscape harbour higher biodiversity than ponds in areas with a large impact of anthropopression, both types of water bodies can contribute to the enrichment of fauna on local and regional scales. This review presents aspects of pond zooplankton diversity with reference to the occurrence of species, common and rare, and significant drivers of their distribution. The results of various studies carried out on small water bodies in Poland revealed a great level of zooplankton diversity, which points directly to a high variation of the origin of types of ponds. Land use within the direct catchment area influences the creation of zooplankton diversity, although a greater impact is connected with various habitats, particularly the open water zone and macrophyte-dominated areas. The complex architecture of elodeids is responsible for the highest zooplankton diversity with many rare species, offering a great number of available ecological niches for littoral animals and profitable anti-predator conditions for planktonic species. Therefore, one should strive to maintain or even increase the complexity of aquatic vegetation within even small-surfaced ponds. The generally high share of rare species found in ponds underlines their high ecological value but, at the same time, a lack of thorough studies. The most common rotifers found in Polish ponds were Keratella cochlearis, Anuraeopsis fissa, Polyarthra vulgaris and Keratella quadrata as well as Chydorus sphaericus, Bosmina longirostris, Ceriodaphnia quadrangula and Eubosmina coregoni among crustaceans. This reflects the wide ecological valence of these species and suggests that most ponds are eutrophic.
