Abstract:We present a preliminary calculation of the electromagnetic form factors of $^3$He and $^3$H, performed within the Light-Front Hamiltonian Dynamics. Relativistic effects show their relevance even at the static limit, increasing at higher values of momentum transfer, as expected.

Abstract:The light-front formalism for a covariant description of the European Muon Collaboration (EMC) effect, already applied to $^3$He, is formally extended to any nucleus, and used for actually calculating the $^3$H and $^4$He cases. The realistic and accurate nuclear description of few-nucleon bound systems, obtained with both phenomenological and chiral potentials, has been properly combined with the Poincare' covariance and macroscopic locality, automatically satisfying both number of particles and momentum sum rule. While retaining the on-mass-shell nucleon structure functions, one is then able to predict a sizable EMC effect for $^4$He, as already observed for $^3$He. Moreover, the impact on the EMC effect of both i) the short-range correlations, such as those generated by modern nuclear interactions, and ii) the ratio between the neutron and proton structure functions has been studied. The short-range correlations generated by retaining only the standard nuclear degrees of freedom act on the depth of the minimum in the EMC ratio, while the uncertainties linked to the ratio of neutron to proton structure functions are found to be very small. These light-front results facilitates ascribing deviations from experimental data due to genuine QCD effects, not included in a standard nuclear description, and initiating unbiased investigations.

Abstract:In order to measure the charge form factor of the neutron, $G^n_E(Q^2)$, one needs to use a neutron bound in a nuclear target. We calculate the change in the form factor for a neutron bound in $^3He$, with respect to the free case, using several versions of the quark meson coupling model. It is found that the form factor may be suppressed by as much as 12% at $Q^2 = 0.5{GeV}^2$ with respect to that of the free neutron.

The Bakamjian-Thomas construction of the Poincaré generators allows us to make use of a realistic $^3$He wave function, obtained from refined nuclear phenomenological potentials. The same approach was already successfully applied to the $^3$He and $^4$He unpolarized deep-inelastic scattering. To investigate the neutron polarized structure functions, $g^n_1$ and $g^n_2$, a readily implementable procedure, aimed at extracting the neutron spin structure functions from those of $^3$He, is shown to hold. Moreover, the first moment of $g^3_1(x)$ was evaluated, aiming at providing a valuable check of the Bjorken sum rule. The present analysis is relevant for experiments nvolving polarized beams planned at the future facilities, like the Electron Ion Colliders.

Abstract:The gravitational form factors of light nuclei are evaluated up to momenta of the order of the nucleon mass, using the impulse approximation. The nucleon gravitational form factors are reduced nonrelativistically, and used to derive the gravitational form factors of light nuclei. The deuteron gravitational form factors are analysed using the Reid soft core potential. The helium-4 gravitational form factors are assessed using the K -harmonics method, and compared to those following from a mean-field approximation with a Woods-Saxon potential. The importance of removing the center of mass motion for the ensuing form factors is emphasized. The mass radii of these light nuclei are extracted and compared to their charge radii counterparts. Abstract:Elastic electron scattering off $^3$He and $^4$He has recently been studied at forward and backward scattering angles in Hall A at JLab. The results will provide accurate data on the elastic form factors, charge and magnetic for $^3$He and charge only for $^4$He, up to squared momentum transfer $Q^2$-values of 3.2 GeV$^2$.

Abstract:The fomalism is developed to express nucleon matrix elements of the electromagnetic current in terms of form factors consistent with the translational, rotational, and parity symmetries of a cubic lattice. Abstract:A microscopic relativistic Hamiltonian containing consistent relativistic and 3N potentials is, for the first time, constructed based on the leading-order covariant pionless effective field theory, and this Hamiltonian is solved by developing a new accurate relativistic ab initio method with a novel symmetry-based artificial neural network for A≤4 nuclei. It is found that the relativistic effects overcome the energy collapse problem for 3H and 4He without promoting a repulsive three-nucleon interaction to leading order as in nonrelativistic calculations. To exactly reproduce the experimental ground-state energies, a three-nucleon interaction is needed and its interplay with the relativistic effects plays a crucial role. The presented results open the new avenue for a unified and consistent study on relativistic effects and many-body interactions in atomic nuclei, and would also help to achieve more accurate ab initio calculations for nuclei.

Abstract:The nuclear polarizability effects in hyperfine splitting of light atomic systems are not well known. The only system for which they were previously calculated is the hydrogen atom, where these effects were shown to contribute about 5\% of the total nuclear correction. One generally expects the polarizability effects to become more pronounced for composite nuclei. In the present work we determine the nuclear polarizability correction to the hyperfine splitting in He$^+$ by comparing the effective Zemach radius deduced from the experimental hyperfine splitting with the Zemach radius obtained from the electron scattering. We obtain a surprising result that the nuclear polarizability of the helion yields just 3\% of the total nuclear correction, which is smaller than for the proton.

Relativistic effects in ab-initio electron-nucleus scattering

Abstract:The electromagnetic responses obtained from Green's function Monte Carlo (GFMC) calculations are based on realistic treatments of nuclear interactions and currents. The main limitations of this method comes from its nonrelativistic nature and its computational cost, the latter hampering the direct evaluation of the inclusive cross sections as measured by experiments. We extend the applicability of GFMC in the quasielastic region to intermediate momentum transfers by performing the calculations in a reference frame that minimizes nucleon momenta. Additional relativistic effects in the kinematics are accounted for employing the two-fragment model. In addition, we developed a novel algorithm, based on the concept of first-kind scaling, to compute the inclusive electromagnetic cross section of $^4$He through an accurate and reliable interpolation of the response functions. A very good agreement is obtained between theoretical and experimental cross sections for a variety of kinematical setups. This offers a promising prospect for the data analysis of neutrino-oscillation experiments that requires an accurate description of nuclear dynamics in which relativistic effects are fully accounted for.

Resonances and collisional properties of neutron-rich helium isotopes in the adiabatic hyperspherical representation

Abstract:This work treats few-body systems consisting of neutrons interacting with a $^{4}{\mathrm{He}}$ nucleus. The adiabatic hyperspherical representation is utilized to solve the $N$-body Schr$\ddot{\mathrm{o}}$dinger equation for the three- and four-body systems, treating both $^{6}{\mathrm{He}}$ and $^{7}{\mathrm{He}}$ nuclei. A simplified central potential model for the $^{4}{\mathrm{He}}-n$ interaction is used in conjunction with a spin-dependent three-body interaction to reproduce $^{6}{\mathrm{He}}$ bound-state and resonance properties as well as properties for the $^{8}{\mathrm{He}}$ nucleus in its ground-state. With this Hamiltonian, the adiabatic hyperspherical representation is used to compute bound and scattering states for both $^{6}{\mathrm{He}}$ and $^{7}{\mathrm{He}}$ nuclei. For the $^{6}{\mathrm{He}}$ system, the electric quadrupole transition between the $0^{+}$ and $2^{+}$ state is investigated. For the $^{7}{\mathrm{He}}$ system, $^{6}{\mathrm{He}}+n$ elastic scattering is investigated along with the four-body recombination process $^{4}{\mathrm{He}}+n+n+n\rightarrow$$^{6}{\mathrm{He}}+n$ and breakup process $^{6}{\mathrm{He}}+n\rightarrow$$^{4}{\mathrm{He}}+n+n+n$.

Abstract:Charge radius and charge form factors of different charge density distributions for ~(6,8)He are calculated with the relativistic Eikonai approximation.Detailed comparisons and discussions are presented. It is found that the charge form factors curves of ~(6,8)He are much lower than the experimental ones of ~4He. This is,in principle,consistent with the experimental fact.Whereas detailed comparison among the charge form factors which correspond to different charge distributions show significant deviations.This indicates that the effects of the correlations between the halo neutrons and the a-core in ~(6,8)He with different charge density distributions are quite different.This result would provide a useful reference for the possible experiments on the next-generation electron-nucleus collider and for the tests of different theoretical models for the exotic nuclei ~(6,8)He.

Abstract:Hydrogen-like light muonic ions, in which one negative muon replaces all the electrons, are extremely sensitive probes of nuclear structure, because the large muon mass increases tremendously the wave function overlap with the nucleus. Using pulsed laser spectroscopy we have measured three 2S-2P transitions in the muonic helium-3 ion ($\mu^3$He$^+$), an ion formed by a negative muon and bare helium-3 nucleus. This allowed us to extract the Lamb shift $E(2P_{1/2}-2S_{1/2})= 1258.598(48)^{\rm exp}(3)^{\rm theo}$ meV, the 2P fine structure splitting $E_{\rm FS}^{\rm exp} = 144.958(114)$ meV, and the 2S-hyperfine splitting (HFS) $E_{\rm HFS}^{\rm exp} = -166.495(104)^{\rm exp}(3)^{\rm theo}$ meV in $\mu^3$He$^+$. Comparing these measurements to theory we determine the rms charge radius of the helion ($^3$He nucleus) to be $r_h$ = 1.97007(94) fm. This radius represents a benchmark for few nucleon theories and opens the way for precision tests in $^3$He atoms and $^3$He-ions. This radius is in good agreement with the value from elastic electron scattering, but a factor 15 more accurate. Combining our Lamb shift measurement with our earlier one in $\mu^4$He$^+$ we obtain $r_h^2-r_\alpha^2 = 1.0636(6)^{\rm exp}(30)^{\rm theo}$ fm$^2$ to be compared to results from the isotope shift measurements in regular He atoms, which are however affected by long-standing tensions. By comparing $E_{\rm HFS}^{\rm exp}$ with theory we also obtain the two-photon-exchange contribution (including higher orders) which is another important benchmark for ab-initio few-nucleon theories aiming at understanding the magnetic and current structure of light nuclei.

Abstract:We compute ground-state and dynamical properties of $^4$He and $^{16}$O nuclei using as input high-resolution, phenomenological nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces that are local in coordinate space. The nuclear Schrödinger equation for both nuclei is accurately solved employing the auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo approach. For the $^4$He nucleus, detailed benchmarks are carried out with the hyperspherical harmonics method. In addition to presenting results for the binding energies and radii, we also analyze the momentum distributions of these nuclei and their Euclidean response function corresponding to the isoscalar density transition. The latter quantity is particularly relevant for lepton-nucleus scattering experiments, as it paves the way to quantum Monte Carlo calculations of electroweak response functions of $^{16}$O.

Abstract:Measuring the 2S-2P Lamb shift in a hydrogen-like muonic atom allows one to extract its nuclear charge radius with a high precision that is limited by the uncertainty in the nuclear structure corrections. The charge radius of the proton thus extracted was found to be 7-sigma away from the CODATA value, in what has become the yet unsolved "proton radius puzzle". Further experiments currently aim at the isotopes of hydrogen and helium: the precise extraction of their radii may provide a hint at the solution of the puzzle. We present the first ab initio calculation of nuclear structure corrections, including the nuclear polarization correction, to the 2S-2P transition in $\mu^3$He$^+$ and $\mu^3$H, and assess solid theoretical error bars. Our predictions reduce the uncertainty in the nuclear structure corrections to the level of a few percents and will be instrumental to the on-going $\mu^3$He$^+$ experiment. We also support the mirror $\mu\,^3$H system as a candidate for further probing of the nucleon polarizabilities and shedding more light on the puzzle.

Abstract:The combined fine and hyperfine structure of the $2^3P$ states in $^3$He is calculated within the framework of nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics. The calculation accounts for the effects of order $m\alpha^6$ and increases the accuracy of theoretical predictions by an order of magnitude. The results obtained are in good agreement with recent spectroscopic measurements in $^3$He.

Abstract:We provide a new tool to interpret the large scale structure of the Universe. As suggested in Paper II, energy density filaments could have been produced by subjacent magnetic flux tubes when the Universe was dominated by radiation. In more recent time epochs, small scale filaments have evolved in a complicated way, but large scale filaments have probably survived and should be identified with present observed matter filaments of clusters. A primordial magnetic field lattice made up of magnetic flux tubes would then have originated a matter lattice made up of cluster filaments. Taking into account some restrictions in the magnetic field configuration we speculate what type of matter network this would have generated. The simplest lattice is made up of octohedra connected at their vertexes, reminding us of a structure of superimposed egg cartons. The vertexes would correspond to large superclusters, which would therefore have eight filaments emerging from them. Some observational evidence is found in the Local Supercluster, which is spider-like, with eight legs.

Abstract:The electromagnetic and axial form factors of the nucleon and its lowest positive parity excitations, the Delta(1232) and the N*(1440), are calculated with constituent-quark models that are specified by simple algebraic representations of the mass-operator eigenstates. Poincaré covariant current operators are generated by the dynamics from single-quark currents that are covariant under a kinematic subgroup. The dependence of the calculated form factors on the choice of kinematics and on the gross features of the wave functions is illustrated for instant-form, point-form, and front-form kinematics. A simple algebraic form of the orbital ground state wave function, which depends on two parameters, allows a fair description of all the form factors over the empirically accessible range, although with widely different choices of the parameters, which determine the range and shape of the orbital wave function. The neutron electric form factor requires additional features, for instance the presence of mixed symmetry S-state component with 1 -- 2 % probability in the ground state wave function. Instant and front form kinematics demand a spatially extended wave function, whereas in point form kinematics the form factors may be described with a quite compact wave function.
