Abstract:We review how the monotone pattern compares to other patterns in terms of enumerative results on pattern avoiding permutations. We consider three natural definitions of pattern avoidance, give an overview of classic and recent formulas, and provide some new results related to limiting distributions.

Abstract:The extension of pattern avoidance from ordinary permutations to those on multisets gave birth to several interesting enumerative results. We study permutations on regular multisets, i.e., multisets in which each element occurs the same number of times. For this case, we close a gap in the work of Heubach and Mansour (2006) and complete the study of permutations avoiding a pair of patterns of length three. In all studied cases, closed enumeration formulae are given and well-known sequences appear. We conclude this paper by some remarks on a generalization of the Stanley-Wilf conjecture to permutations on multisets and words.
On the enumeration of permutations avoiding chains of patterns

Abstract:In 2019, Bóna and Smith introduced the notion of strong pattern avoidance, saying that a permutation $\pi$ strongly avoids a pattern $\sigma$ if $\pi$ and $\pi^2$ both avoid $\sigma$. Recently, Archer and Geary generalized the idea of strong pattern avoidance to chain avoidance, in which a permutation $\pi$ avoids a chain of patterns $(\tau^{(1)}:\tau^{(2)}:\cdots:\tau^{(k)})$ if the $i$-th power of the permutation avoids the pattern $\tau^{(i)}$ for $1\leq i\leq k$. In this paper, we give explicit formulae for the number of sets of permutations avoiding certain chains of patterns. Our results give affirmative answers to two conjectures proposed by Archer and Geary.

Completing the enumeration of inversion sequences avoiding one or two patterns of length 3

Abstract:We present four different constructions of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences, and use them to obtain expressions for the enumeration sequences of 22 distinct open cases. This completes the enumeration of inversion sequences avoiding one or two patterns of length 3. Some of our constructions are based on generating trees. Others involve pattern-avoiding words, which we also count using generating trees. Furthermore, we introduce a generalization of inversion sequences, which we call shifted inversion sequences. It is sometimes easier to construct pattern-avoiding inversion sequences by seeing them as a particular case of shifted inversion sequences.

Abstract:In 2019, Bóna and Smith introduced the notion of \emph{strong pattern avoidance}, that is, a permutation and its square both avoid a given pattern. In this paper, we enumerate the set of permutations $\pi$ which not only strongly avoid the pattern $312$ or $231$ but also avoid the pattern $\tau$, for $\tau\in S_3$ and some $\tau\in S_4$. One of them is to give a positive answer to a conjecture of Archer and Geary.

Abstract:Multidimensional permutations, or $d$-permutations, are represented by their diagrams on $[n]^d$ such that there exists exactly one point per hyperplane $x_i$ that satisfies $x_i= j$ for $i \in [d]$ and $j \in [n]$. Bonichon and Morel previously enumerated $3$-permutations avoiding small patterns, and we extend their results by first proving four conjectures, which exhaustively enumerate $3$-permutations avoiding any two fixed patterns of size $3$. We further provide a enumerative result relating $3$-permutation avoidance classes with their respective recurrence relations. In particular, we show a recurrence relation for $3$-permutations avoiding the patterns $132$ and $213$, which contributes a new sequence to the OEIS database. We then extend our results to completely enumerate $3$-permutations avoiding three patterns of size $3$.

Fejér monotone sequences revisited

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a localized and relativized generalization of the usual concept of Fejér monotonicity together with uniform and quantitative versions thereof and show that the main quantitative results obtained by the 1st author together with Nicolae and Leuştean in 2018 and with López-Acedo and Nicolae in 2019 respectively, extend to this generalization. Our framework, in particular, covers the sequence generated by the Dykstra algorithm while the latter is not Fejér-monotone in the ordinary sense. This gives a theoretical explanation why under a metric regularity assumption one obtains an explicit rate of convergence for Dykstra's algorithm which was proved recently by the 2nd author.

Abstract:In this paper, we study pattern avoidance in weak ascent sequences, giving some results for patterns of length 3. This is an analogous study to one given by Duncan and Steingrímsson (2011) for ascent sequences. More precisely, we provide systematically the generating functions for the number of weak ascent sequences avoiding the patterns $001, 011, 012, 021$, and $102$. Additionally, we establish bijective connections between pattern-avoiding weak ascent sequences and other combinatorial objects, such as compositions, upper triangular 01-matrices, and plane trees.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent proof of the Stanley-Wilf conjecture, we study the asymptotic behavior of the number of permutations avoiding a generalized pattern. Generalized patterns allow the requirement that some pairs of letters must be adjacent in an occurrence of the pattern in the permutation, and consecutive patterns are a particular case of them. We determine the asymptotic behavior of the number of permutations avoiding a consecutive pattern, showing that they are an exponentially small proportion of the total number of permutations. For some other generalized patterns we give partial results, showing that the number of permutations avoiding them grows faster than for classical patterns but more slowly than for consecutive patterns.

Abstract:The work of Vershik and Kerov [1977], Logan and Shepp [1977] established that the shape of the scaled random young diagram in Russian notation, as determined by the Plancherel measure, converges to a deterministic shape. In this article, we focus on the scenario where the number of fixed points is substantial. We provide evidence that, subject to specific requirements on the total number of cycles, the limiting shape is a scaled version of the Vershik-Kerov-Logan-Shepp limiting shape. Additionally, we identify certain limiting regimes that resemble those in Chapuy, Louf, and Walsh [2022]. Furthermore, we enhance the existing results on Tracy-Widom universality classes for $\beta \in \{ 1, 2, 4\}$ for monotone subsequences.

Pattern avoidance in nonnesting permutations

Abstract:Nonnesting permutations are permutations of the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\dots,n,n\}$ that avoid subsequences of the form $abba$ for any $a\neq b$. These permutations have recently been studied in connection to noncrossing (also called quasi-Stirling) permutations, which are those that avoid subsequences of the form $abab$, and in turn generalize the well-known Stirling permutations. Inspired by the work by Archer et al. on pattern avoidance in noncrossing permutations, we consider the analogous problem in the nonnesting case. We enumerate nonnesting permutations that avoid each set of two or more patterns of length 3, as well as those that avoid some sets of patterns of length 4. We obtain closed formulas and generating functions, some of which involve unexpected appearances of the Catalan and Fibonacci numbers. Our proofs rely on decompositions, recurrences, and bijections.

Abstract:We provide quantitative and abstract strong convergence results for sequences from a compact metric space satisfying a certain form of generalized Fejér monotonicity where (1) the metric can be replaced by a much more general type of function measuring distances (including, in particular, certain Bregman distances), (2) full Fejér monotonicity is relaxed to a partial variant and (3) the distance functions are allowed to vary along the iteration. For such sequences, the paper provides explicit and effective rates of metastability and even rates of convergence, the latter under a regularity assumption that generalizes the notion of metric regularity introduced by Kohlenbach, López-Acedo and Nicolae, itself an abstract generalization of many regularity notions from the literature. In the second part of the paper, we apply the abstract quantitative results established in the first part to two algorithms: one algorithm for approximating zeros of maximally monotone and maximally ρ -comonotone operators in Hilbert spaces (in the sense of Combettes and Pennanen as well as Bauschke, Moursi and Wang) that incorporates inertia terms every other term and another algorithm for approximating zeros of monotone operators in Banach spaces (in the sense of Browder) that is only Fejér monotone w.r.t. a certain Bregman distance.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the distribution of consecutive patterns in the set of 123-avoiding permutations and the set of 132-avoiding permutations, that is, in $\mathcal{S}_n(123)$ and $\mathcal{S}_n(132)$. We first study the distribution of consecutive pattern $\gamma$-matches in $\mathcal{S}_n(123)$ and $\mathcal{S}_n(132)$ for each length 3 consecutive pattern $\gamma$. Then we extend our methods to study the joint distributions of multiple consecutive patterns. Some more general cases are discussed in this paper as well.

Pattern-avoiding modified ascent sequences

Abstract:We initiate an in-depth study of pattern avoidance on modified ascent sequences. Our main technique consists in using Stanley's standardization to obtain a transport theorem between primitive modified ascent sequences and permutations avoiding a bivincular pattern of length three. We enumerate some patterns via bijections with other combinatorial structures such as Fishburn permutations, lattice paths and set partitions. We settle the last remaining case of a conjecture by Duncan and Steingrímsson by proving that modified ascent sequences avoiding 2321 are counted by the Bell numbers.

Abstract:We find a two term asymptotic expansion for the optimal expected value of a sequentially selected monotone subsequence from a random permutation of length n. A striking feature of this expansion is that tells us that the expected value of optimal selection from a random permutation is quantifiably larger than optimal sequential selection from an independent sequences of uniformly distributed random variables; specifically, it is larger by at least (1/6)log n +O(1).

Abstract:The concept of pattern avoidance respectively containment in permutations can be extended to permutations on multisets in a straightforward way. In this note we present a direct proof of the already known fact that the well-known Stanley-Wilf Conjecture, stating that the number of permutations avoiding a given pattern does not grow faster than exponentially, also holds for permutations on multisets.

Abstract:In a recent paper, Bóna and Smith define the notion of strong avoidance , in which a permutation and its square both avoid a given pattern. In this paper, we generalize this idea to what we call chain avoidance . We say that a permutation avoids a chain of patterns (τ1:τ2:⋯:τk) if the i -th power of the permutation avoids the pattern τi . We enumerate the set of permutations π which avoid the chain (213,312:τ) , i.e., unimodal permutations whose square avoids τ , for τ∈S3 and use this to find a lower bound on the number of permutations that avoid the chain (312:τ) for τ∈S3 . We finish the paper by discussing permutations that avoid longer chains.
