Abstract:The group-theoretical method used to derive horizontal symmetry from neutrino mixing is reviewed and expanded. Some misunderstanding in the literature regarding the result is clarified. The method used previously to find vacuum alignments of $S_4$ is applied to compute those of $A_4$ and $S_3$. A study of effective theories based on these three groups shows that in each case there are just enough free parameters to fit all the masses and the remaining mixing parameters. This places constraint on dynamical models because effective theories are just dynamical models with the right-handed fermions integrated out. How quarks may fit into this scheme is briefly discussed.

Abstract:This paper deals with the symmetries of elementary fermions and their derivation from fundamental physical principles such as the Lorentz invariance and from the spinor-helicity formalism employed to three-vectors. The generators of the Lorentz group are discussed, and the physics of the associated chiral spins is used to establish the chiral symmetry SU (2). The helicity of spin is defined which, when being applied to the hadronic isospin, yields the symmetry group SU (4). The Kronecker product of these two basic symmetries defines a unified symmetry of the basic light fermions, namely the chiral doublets of the single lepton and triple quarks of the first family. Breaking this symmetry, according to mechanisms that are used in the electroweak interactions of the Standard Model (SM) of quantum field theory, yields quantum electrodynamics (QED) with symmetry group U (1), weak interactions with symmetry group SU (2), and what we like to name quantum hadrodynamics (QHD, akin to quantum chromodynamics QCD of the SM) with symmetry group SU (3). The gauge bosons associated with QED and QHD remain massless, but the weak bosons and the V bosons, related to the transformation of the quarks into a lepton and vice versa, become massive by the Higgs mechanism. Their masses are defined by the Higgs vacuum and the two coupling constants involved in the unified model. The V -boson mass is predicted to be 35.4 GeV. Furthermore, a possible explanation of hadron confinement is given in terms of the two hadronic charge operators. Moreover, the concept of hypercharge as used in the SM is not needed. Various versions of the extended Dirac equation that include the above symmetry groups are derived.

Abstract:The formula ${{tan}^{2}\ensuremath{\theta}}_{\mathrm{C}}\ensuremath{\simeq}\frac{{m}_{d}}{{m}_{s}}$ is derived from a continuous symmetry. Cabibbo universality is guaranteed in a natural way. All weak mixing angles are determined in terms of quark masses. The $b$ quark is predicted to decay mainly to the $u$ quark, and the lifetime of the associated mesons is \ensuremath{\sim}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}10}$-${10}^{\ensuremath{-}11}$ sec. We argue that this additional symmetry is (essentially) the only one which can be added to the standard $\mathrm{S}{\mathrm{U}}_{c}(3)\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\mathrm{SU}(2)\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\mathrm{U}(1)$ model without generating anomalies.

Abstract:We discuss whether quark, charged lepton and neutrino masses and mixing angles may be related by an extended flavour and family symmetry group. We show that current measurements of all fermion masses and mixing angles are consistent with a combination of an underlying SU(3) family symmetry together with a GUT symmetry such as SO(10). In this the near bi-maximal mixing observed in the neutrino sector is directly related to the small mixing observed in the quark sector, the difference between quark and lepton mixing angles being due to the see-saw mechanism. Using this connection we make a detailed prediction for the lepton mixing angles determining neutrino oscillation phenomena.

Abstract:A systematic investigation of all possible horizontal symmetries acting on four generations of quarks in a minimal left-right-symmetric model is carried out. There are only two consistent models with realistic constraints on the quark masses and mixing angles. It is shown that ${\mathrm{Z}}_{4}$ is the unique symmetry group leading to these models. The fourth-generation quark masses ${\mathrm{m}}_{\mathrm{b}\ensuremath{'}}$ and ${\mathrm{m}}_{\mathrm{t}\ensuremath{'}}$ are constrained to be (A) ${\mathrm{m}}_{\mathrm{b}}$/${\mathrm{m}}_{\mathrm{t}}$\ensuremath{\simeq}${\mathrm{m}}_{\mathrm{b}\ensuremath{'}}$/${\mathrm{m}}_{\mathrm{t}\ensuremath{'}}$, (B) ${\mathrm{m}}_{\mathrm{s}}$/${\mathrm{m}}_{\mathrm{c}}$\ensuremath{\simeq}(${\mathrm{m}}_{\mathrm{b}}$+${\mathrm{m}}_{\mathrm{b}\ensuremath{'}}$)/(${\mathrm{m}}_{\mathrm{t}}$+${\mathrm{m}}_{\mathrm{t}\ensuremath{'}}$). Thus, model (A) predicts ${\mathrm{m}}_{\mathrm{t}}$,${\mathrm{m}}_{\mathrm{b}\ensuremath{'}}$\ensuremath{\leqslant}43 GeV whereas model (B) has ${\mathrm{m}}_{\mathrm{b}\ensuremath{'}}$\ensuremath{\leqslant}58 GeV. The two models differ in the mixing of the fourth generation into the first three. A crucial test which can distinguish the two models is a direct measurement of the mixing matrix element |${\mathrm{V}}_{\mathrm{ub}}$|. Model (A) predicts it to be \ensuremath{\sim}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}4}$, an order of magnitude smaller than the prediction of model (B).
A Built-in Horizontal Symmetry of $SO(10)$

Abstract:In a renormalizable $SO(10)$ theory, all fermion mass matrices are linear combinations of three fundamental types, $M^{10}, M^{\overline{126}}$, and $M^{120}$, whose superscripts indicate their $SO(10)$ transformation properties. We point out that each of these fundamental mass matrices possesses a natural symmetry that can be used to generate an unbroken horizontal symmetry $\G$, if the natural symmetry is taken to be the residual symmetry. This built-in symmetry is a Coxeter group. If it is finite, it must be one of five groups, $S_4,\ Z_2\x S_4$,\ $Z_2\x A_5$, plus two `rank-4' groups. These symmetries place constraints on the fundamental mass matrices and reduce the number of parameters in an SO(10) fit. Since they are built-in and can be derived theoretically, it is hoped that they impose better constraints than those without a theoretical basis, but that is to be confirmed because there is no attempt to fit the experimental data in this article, except to count the number of free parameters. To illustrate the similarities and differences of various kinds of constraints, a comparison is made with an existing $S_4$ model, and with models possessing the Fritzsch texture.

Abstract:The term "particle–hole symmetry" is beset with conflicting meanings in contemporary physics. Conceived and written from a condensed-matter standpoint, the present paper aims to clarify and sharpen the terminology. In that vein, we propose to define the operation of "particle–hole conjugation" as the tautological algebra automorphism that simply swaps single-fermion creation and annihilation operators, and we construct its invariant lift to the Fock space. Particle–hole symmetries then arise for gapful or gapless free-fermion systems at half filling, as the concatenation of particle–hole conjugation with one or another involution that reverses the sign of the first-quantized Hamiltonian. We illustrate that construction principle with a series of examples including the Su–Schrieffer–Heeger model and the Kitaev–Majorana chain. For an enhanced perspective, we contrast particle–hole symmetries with the charge-conjugation symmetry of relativistic Dirac fermions. We go on to present two major applications in the realm of interacting electrons. For one, we offer a heuristic argument that the celebrated Haldane phase of antiferromagnetic quantum spin chains is adiabatically connected to a free-fermion topological phase protected by a particle–hole symmetry. For another, we review the recent proposal by Son [Phys. Rev. X <b>5</b>, 031027 (2015)] for a particle–hole conjugation symmetric effective field theory of the half-filled lowest Landau level, and we comment on the emerging microscopic picture of the composite fermion.

Abstract:Multicomponent quantum mixtures in one dimension can be characterized by their symmetry under particle exchange. For a strongly interacting Bose-Bose mixture, we show that the time evolution of the momentum distribution from an initially symmetry-mixed state is quasiconstant for a SU(2) symmetry conserving Hamiltonian, while it displays large oscillations in time for the symmetry-breaking case where inter- and intraspecies interactions are different. Using the property that the momentum distribution operator at strong interactions commutes with the class-sum operator, the latter acting as a symmetry witness, we show that the momentum distribution oscillations correspond to symmetry oscillations, with a mechanism analogous to neutrino flavor oscillations.

Abstract:The Standard Model does not constrain the form of the Yukawa matrices and thus the origin of fermion mass hierarchies and mixing pattern remains puzzling. On the other hand, there are intriguing relations between the quark masses and their weak mixing angles, such as the well-known one $\tan \theta_C= \sqrt{m_d/m_s}$ for the Cabibbo angle, which may point towards specific textures of Yukawa matrices hypothesized by Harald Fritzsch at the end of the 70's. Though the original ansatz of Fritzsch is excluded by the experimental data, one can consider its minimal modification which consists in introducing an asymmetry between the 23 and 32 entries in the down-quark Yukawa matrix. We show that this structure is perfectly compatible with the present precision data on quark masses and CKM mixing matrix, and theoretically it can be obtained in the context of $SU(5)$ model with inter-family $SU(3)_H$ symmetry. We also discuss some alternative approaches which could give a natural description of the fermion mass spectrum and weak mixing pattern.

Abstract:A hermitian matrix can be parametrized by a set consisting of its determinant and the eigenvalues of its submatrices. We established a group of equations which connect these variables with the mixing parameters of diagonalization. These equations are simple in structure and manifestly invariant in form under the symmetry operations of dilatation, translation, rephasing and permutation. When applied to the problem of neutrino oscillation in matter they produced two new ``matter invariants" which are confirmed by available data.

Abstract:We explore new aspects of internal fermionic shifting symmetries, present in physical systems such as free Dirac spinors and p-form tensor-spinor fields. We propose a novel procedure to gauge these global symmetries, which also introduces a new Stückelberg mechanism to give a mass to free fermionic fields. Furthermore, we find new magnetic fermionic symmetries in these physical systems whose charged objects are disorder operators. For the case of a Dirac spinor, we discuss an dual description, where the magnetic symmetry acts on the holonomies of a dual 2-form tensor-spinor. Further generalizations such as higher-group-like structures are also discussed.

The symmetry approach to quark and lepton masses and mixing

Abstract:The Standard Model lacks an organizing principle to describe quark and lepton ``flavours''. We review the impact of neutrino oscillation experiments, which show that leptons mix very differently from quarks, placing a major challenge, but also providing a key input to the flavour puzzle. We briefly sketch the seesaw and ``scotogenic'' approaches to neutrino mass, the latter including also WIMP dark matter. We discuss the limitations of popular neutrino mixing patterns and examine the possibility that they arise from symmetry, giving a bottom-up approach to residual flavour and CP symmetries. We show how family and/or CP symmetries can generate novel viable and predictive mixing patterns. We review the model-independent ways to predict lepton mixing and test both mixing predictions as well as mass sum rules. We also discuss UV-complete flavour theories in four and more space-time dimensions, and their predictions. Benchmarks given include an $A_4$ scotogenic construction with trimaximal mixing pattern TM2. Higher-dimensional completions are also reviewed, such as 5-D warped flavordynamics. We present a $T^\prime$ warped flavordynamics theory with TM1 mixing pattern, detectable neutrinoless double beta decay rates and providing a very good fit of flavour observables, including quarks. We also review how 6-D orbifolds offer a way to determine the structure of the 4-D family symmetry from the symmetries between the extra-D branes. We describe a scotogenic $A_4$ orbifold predicting the ``golden'' quark-lepton mass relation, large neutrino mass with normal ordering, higher atmospheric octant, restricted reactor angle, and an excellent global flavour fit, including quark observables. Finally, we discuss promising recent progress in tackling the flavor issue through the use of modular symmetries.

Abstract:We explore two bilarge neutrino mixing Anzatze within the context of Abelian flavor symmetry theories: (BL1) sin theta(12) similar to lambda, sin theta(13) similar to lambda, sin theta(23) similar to lambda, and (BL2) sin theta(12) similar to lambda, sin theta(13) similar to lambda, sin theta(23) similar to 1 - lambda. The first pattern is proposed by two of us and is favored if the atmospheric mixing angle theta(23) lies in the first octant, while the second one is preferred for the second octant of theta(23). In order to reproduce the second texture, we find that the flavor symmetry should be U(1) x Z(m), while for the first pattern the flavor symmetry should be extended to U(1) x Z(m) x Z(n) with m and n of different parity. Explicit models for both mixing patterns are constructed based on the flavor symmetries U(1) x Z(3) x Z(4) and U(1) x Z(2). The models are extended to the quark sector within the framework of SU(5) grand unified theory in order to give a successful description of quark and lepton masses and mixing simultaneously. Abstract:The emergence of fractonic topological phases and novel universality classes for quantum dynamics highlights the importance of dipolar symmetry in condensed matter systems. In this work, we study the properties of symmetry-breaking phases of the dipolar symmetries in fermionic models in various spatial dimensions. In such systems, fermions obtain energy dispersion through dipole condensation. Due to the nontrivial commutation between the translation symmetry and dipolar symmetry, the Goldstone modes of the dipolar condensate are strongly coupled to the dispersive fermions and naturally give rise to non-Fermi liquids at low energies. The IR description of the dipolar symmetry-breaking phase is analogous to the well-known theory of a Fermi surface coupled to an emergent U(1) gauge field. We also discuss the crossover behavior when the dipolar symmetry is slightly broken and the cases with anisotropic dipolar conservation.

Abstract:We develop the quantum field theory of fermion mixing in curved spacetime and discuss the role of unitarily inequivalent representations in the particle interpretation of the theory. We derive general oscillation formulae and apply them to specific spcetimes of interest, such as spatially flat FRW metrics and the Schwarzschild spacetime. We exhibit the main deviations from the usual quantum mechanical approach.
