Abstract:This paper deals with the symmetries of elementary fermions and their derivation from fundamental physical principles such as the Lorentz invariance and from the spinor-helicity formalism employed to three-vectors. The generators of the Lorentz group are discussed, and the physics of the associated chiral spins is used to establish the chiral symmetry SU (2). The helicity of spin is defined which, when being applied to the hadronic isospin, yields the symmetry group SU (4). The Kronecker product of these two basic symmetries defines a unified symmetry of the basic light fermions, namely the chiral doublets of the single lepton and triple quarks of the first family. Breaking this symmetry, according to mechanisms that are used in the electroweak interactions of the Standard Model (SM) of quantum field theory, yields quantum electrodynamics (QED) with symmetry group U (1), weak interactions with symmetry group SU (2), and what we like to name quantum hadrodynamics (QHD, akin to quantum chromodynamics QCD of the SM) with symmetry group SU (3). The gauge bosons associated with QED and QHD remain massless, but the weak bosons and the V bosons, related to the transformation of the quarks into a lepton and vice versa, become massive by the Higgs mechanism. Their masses are defined by the Higgs vacuum and the two coupling constants involved in the unified model. The V -boson mass is predicted to be 35.4 GeV. Furthermore, a possible explanation of hadron confinement is given in terms of the two hadronic charge operators. Moreover, the concept of hypercharge as used in the SM is not needed. Various versions of the extended Dirac equation that include the above symmetry groups are derived.

The Non-Invertible Axial Symmetry in QED Comes Full Circle

Abstract:We revisit the possibility of constructing non-invertible topological defects for the axial symmetry of massless QED, despite its ABJ anomaly. Dressing the defects with a topological quantum field theory with mixed $U(1)$ and $\mathbb{R}$-valued gauge fields, we are able to describe axial rotations of any rational or irrational angle. We confront our results with the existing proposals, in particular those that concern rational angles. We also provide the Symmetry TFT that reproduces the action of all such symmetry defects of QED. Finally, we discuss how similar techniques allow the study of condensation defects for a $\mathbb{R}$ global symmetry.

Abstract:Quantum Electrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions (QED$_3$) with two Dirac fermions displays time reversal symmetry, nontrivial SPT phases and anomalies. The fate of this theory in its strongly coupled regime has been debated extensively. Surprisingly, we find that gluing together the phase diagrams of two standard Wilson-Fisher $O(4)$ theories suffices to reproduce all the SPT phases, anomalies, and semi-classical limits. A central mechanism behind it is ``SPT absorption''. The patching of the $O(4)$ transitions makes very concrete predictions for the behavior of the theory in its strongly coupled limits; for instance, the $\theta=\pi$ sigma model with $S^3$ topology appears due to monopole condensation.

Symmetry Breaking from Monopole Condensation in QED$_3$

Abstract:QED in three dimensions with an $SU(2)_f$ doublet $\psi^i$ of massless, charge-1 Dirac fermions (and no Chern-Simons term) has a $U(2) = (SU(2)_f \times U(1)_m)/\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry that acts on gauge-invariant local operators, including monopole operators charged under $U(1)_m$. We establish that there are only two possible IR scenarios: either the theory flows to a CFT with $U(2)$ symmetry (a scenario strongly constrained by conformal bootstrap bounds); or it spontaneously breaks $U(2) \to U(1)$ via the condensation of a monopole operator of smallest $U(1)_m$ charge, which is a $U(2)$ doublet. This leads to three Nambu-Goldstone bosons described by a sigma model into a squashed three-sphere $S^3$ with $U(2)$ isometry. We further show that the conventional $SU(2)_f$-triplet order parameter $i \bar \psi \vec \sigma \, \psi$ also gets a vev, exactly aligned with the monopole vev, such that the triplet parametrizes the $\mathbb{CP}^1$ base of the $S^3$ Hopf bundle, with the monopoles providing the $S^1$ fibers. We also recall why this scenario is compatible with the Vafa-Witten theorem. We obtain these results by analyzing the phase diagram as a function of the fermion triplet mass $\vec m$: we show that for all $\vec m \neq 0$ there is a Coulomb phase with only a weakly-coupled photon at low energies, arising from a monopole vev that is aligned with $\vec m$ via the Hopf map. We then argue that taking $\vec m \to 0$ leads to the symmetry-breaking scenario above. Throughout, we give a detailed account of anomaly matching, which leads to a $\theta=\pi$ term in the $S^3$ sigma model. In one presentation, it can be understood as a Hopf term in a suitably gauged version of the $\mathbb{CP}^1$ sigma model.

Abstract:We show that the asymptotic infinite dimensional enlarged gauge symmetries constructed for QED are anomalous in Dirac and Weyl semimetals. This symmetry is particularly important in particle physics for its analogy with the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) symmetries in gravity, as well as for its connection with QED soft IR theorems. This leads to observable effects, because of the induction of a new current in the material, which carries a memory of the BMS symmetry precursor.

Abstract:In the present paper, the dual symmetries of dense quark matter phase diagram found in some massless three- and two-color NJL models in the mean field approximation have been shown to exist at a more fundamental level as a dual transformations of fields and chemical potentials leaving the Lagrangian invariant. As a result, the corresponding dual symmetries of the full phase diagram can be shown without any approximation. And it has been shown not only in the NJL models, but also in framework of two- and three-color massless QCD itself. This is quite interesting, since one might say that it is not very common to show something completely non-perturbatively in QCD.

Abstract:We review the main results obtained by the BRAHMS collaboration on the properties of hot and dense hadronic and partonic matter produced in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC. A particular focus of this paper is to discuss to what extent the results collected so far by BRAHMS, and by the other three experiments at RHIC, can be taken as evidence for the formation of a state of deconfined partonic matter, the so called quark-gluon-plasma (QGP). We also discuss evidence for a possible precursor state to the QGP, i.e. the proposed Color Glass Condensate.

Discrete Symmetry in Relativistic Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:EPR experiment on $K^0-\bar{K}^0$ system in 1998\cite{1} strongly hints that one should use operators $\hat{E}_c=-i\hbar\frac{\partial}{\partial t}$ and $\hat{\bf p}_c=i\hbar\nabla$ for the wavefunction (WF) of antiparticle. Further analysis on Klein-Gordon (KG) equation reveals that there is a discrete symmetry hiding in relativistic quantum mechanics (RQM) that ${\cal P}{\cal T}={\cal C}$. Here ${\cal P}{\cal T}$ means the (newly defined) combined space-time inversion (with ${\bf x}\to -{\bf x}, t\to-t$), while ${\cal C}$ the transformation of WF $\psi$ between particle and its antiparticle whose definition is just residing in the above symmetry. After combining with Feshbach-Villars (FV) dissociation of KG equation ($\psi=\phi+\chi$)\cite{2}, this discrete symmetry can be rigorously reformulated by the invariance of coupling equation of $\phi$ and $\chi$ under either the combined space-time inversion ${\cal P}{\cal T}$ or the mass inversion ($m\to -m$), which makes the KG equation a self-consistent theory. Dirac equation is also discussed accordingly. Various applications of this discrete symmetry are discussed, including the prediction of antigravity between matter and antimatter as well as the reason why we believe neutrinos are likely the tachyons.

Symmetries of Nonrelativistic Phase Space and the Structure of Quark-Lepton Generation

Abstract:According to the Hamiltonian formalism, nonrelativistic phase space may be considered as an arena of physics, with momentum and position treated as independent variables. Invariance of x^2+p^2 constitutes then a natural generalization of ordinary rotational invariance. We consider Dirac-like linearization of this form, with position and momentum satisfying standard commutation relations. This leads to the identification of a quantum-level structure from which some phase space properties might emerge. Genuine rotations and reflections in phase space are tied to the existence of new quantum numbers, unrelated to ordinary 3D space. Their properties allow their identification with the internal quantum numbers characterising the structure of a single quark-lepton generation in the Standard Model. In particular, the algebraic structure of the Harari-Shupe preon model of fundamental particles is reproduced exactly and without invoking any subparticles. Analysis of the Clifford algebra of nonrelativistic phase space singles out an element which might be associated with the concept of lepton mass. This element is transformed into a corresponding element for a single coloured quark, leading to a generalization of the concept of mass and a different starting point for the discussion of quark unobservability.

On the Proof of Chiral Symmetry Breaking from Anomaly Matching in QCD-like Theories

Abstract:We critically reconsider the argument based on 't Hooft anomaly matching that aims at proving chiral symmetry breaking in 4d QCD-like theories with $N_c>2$ colors and $N_f$ flavors. The main line of reasoning relies on a property of the solutions of the anomaly matching and persistent mass equations called $N_f$-independence. In previous works, the validity of $N_f$-independence was assumed based on qualitative arguments, but it was never proven rigorously. We provide a detailed proof and clarify under which (dynamical) conditions it holds. Our results are valid for a generic spectrum of massless composite fermions including baryons and exotics.

Fermionic asymptotic symmetries in massless QED

Abstract:We consider soft electrons in massless QED at tree-level. The emission amplitude at leading order in the soft electron energy factorizes in a way similar to the soft photon case. We recast the soft electron factorization formula as a Ward identity of an asymptotic charge. This leads to the first example of an asymptotic fermionic symmetry in a theory with no conventional supersymmetry, suggesting that tree-level massless QED may posses an asymptotic supersymmetry algebra. Although our approach does not yet allow us to completely characterize the algebra, it suggests that subleading soft photons should feature in the anticommutator of two fermionic symmetry generators.

Abstract:I summarize a research program that aims to reconstruct quantum theory from a fundamental physical principle that, while a quantum system has no intrinsic hidden variables, it can be understood using a reference measurement. This program reduces the physical question of why the quantum formalism is empirically successful to the mathematical question of why complete sets of equiangular lines appear to exist in complex vector spaces when they do not exist in real ones. My primary goal is to clarify motivations, rather than to present a closed book of numbered theorems, and consequently the discussion is more in the manner of a colloquium than a PRL.

Emergent Non-Invertible Symmetries Bridging UV and IR Phases -- The Adjoint QCD Example

Abstract:In this letter, we demonstrate how an emergent non-invertible symmetry along a renormalization group (RG) flow reveals connections between microscopic and macroscopic physics. We illustrate this using (3+1)-dimensional Adjoint QCD with two flavors of Weyl fermions as an example. For the $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ case, Córdova and Dumitrescu proposed a non-supersymmetric deformation of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYM theory leading to dynamical abelianization, followed by monopole condensation, and resulting in a confining infrared (IR) phase characterized by disjoint copies of the $\mathbb{CP}^1$ sigma model. In this scenario, we point out that the abelianized phase has an emergent non-invertible symmetry, which is matched with the non-invertible symmetry of the IR $\mathbb{CP}^1$ phase, associated to the Hopf solitons. This result illustrate how an emergent non-invertible symmetry can be used to provide a bridge connecting the IR solitons and their properties with the ones of microscopic degrees of freedom in gauge theories with one-form symmetries. Moreover, based on this insight we generalize these results to other gauge theories with any number of colors, and propose a candidate for the UV baryon operator in all these cases.

Abstract:Selection rules arising from accidental or broken symmetries may be sufficiently obscure that their agency is hidden, leading to the appearance of "magic zeroes" -- quantities that are suppressed without apparent recourse to a symmetry explanation. Magic zeroes and their corresponding hidden symmetries may shed new light on parametric hierarchies in the Standard Model and beyond. We identify the hidden symmetry responsible for a recently-discovered magic zero, the vanishing of the putative leading contribution to the anomalous dipole moments of the muon upon integrating out weak doublet and singlet vector-like fermions. Some of the tools involved -- spurion analysis leveraging discrete symmetries of the free theory, field redefinitions, spectator fields, and non-supersymmetric non-renormalization theorems -- may prove useful in the hunt for new magic zeroes and their hidden symmetries.

Abstract:Extending the well-known $SU(3)_C \times SU(3)_L \times SU(3)_R$ model of quarks and leptons to include a fourth $SU(3)_N$ gauge factor, a new realization is obtained, different from leptonic color, which contains a lepton/dark symmetry with the help of an input $Z_4$ symmetry. It is seen to encompass a previous extension of the standard model to $SU(2)_N$ lepton symmetry.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a revision of the discrete symmetries (C, P, T, CP, and CPT), within an approach that treats 2-component Weyl spinors as the fundamental building blocks. Then, we discuss some salient aspects of the discrete symmetries within quantum field theory (QFT). Besides the generic discussion, we also consider aspects arising within specific renormalizable theories (such as QED and YM). As a new application of the chiral formulation, we discuss the discrete symmetries for the Rarita-Schwinger (RS) spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ field. For the sake of completeness, the elements of linearized gravity (LG) and RS theories are discussed, as they are fundamental to Supergravity (SUGRA). We also discuss the advantages of using the 2-component spinors as the basic building blocks for the formulation of CPT-violating QFTs. Following this formalism, we establish an extension of the general RS theory with terms that violate the Lorentz symmetry and/or CPT symmetry, as well as the one already established in LG.

Abstract:Recently, it was shown that modular symmetry may solve the strong CP problem without axions, by producing a vanishing QCD angle while generating a large quark CP violation phase. We extend this framework to finite modular groups, systematically identifying the allowed mass textures. We find quark fields must furnish 1D representations and scan the minimal model landscape.
