Abstract:The interrelation between the concepts of self-consistency, relativism and many-particle systems is considered within the framework of a unified consideration of classical and quantum physics based on the first principle of the probability conservation law. The probability conservation law underlies the Vlasov equation chain. From the first Vlasov equation, the Schrödinger equation, the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, the equation of motion of a charged particle in an electromagnetic field, the Maxwell equations, the Pauli equation and the Dirac equation are constructed. The paper shows with mathematical rigor that quantum systems with a time independent function of quasi-density probability in phase space are not capable to emit electromagnetic radiation. It is shown that at the micro-level a quantum object may be considered rather as an «extended» object than a point one. And the hydrodynamic description of continuum mechanics is applicable for such an object. A number of exact solutions of quantum and classical model systems is considered, demonstrating a new insight at the quantum mechanics representation.

Abstract: Recently published paper [PRL 114, 147701 (2015)] contains several misleading statements and misinterpretations of known facts. The main massage of the paper [PRL 114, 147701 (2015)] is as follows: "We have shown that explicit symmetry breaking in the structural configuration of charges leads to symmetry breaking of the electric field which results in electromagnetic radiation due to non-conservative current within a localized region of space and time" seems to transcend mere empiricism, touching the theoretical foundations of electromagnetism. Moreover, basic mistakes are numerous in this article and its main claim is wrong. Below we prove it citing the paper and arguing against it.
Price Variations in a Stock Market With Many Agents

Abstract:Large variations in stock prices happen with sufficient frequency to raise doubts about existing models, which all fail to account for non-Gaussian statistics. We construct simple models of a stock market, and argue that the large variations may be due to a crowd effect, where agents imitate each other's behavior. The variations over different time scales can be related to each other in a systematic way, similar to the Levy stable distribution proposed by Mandelbrot to describe real market indices. In the simplest, least realistic case, exact results for the statistics of the variations are derived by mapping onto a model of diffusing and annihilating particles, which has been solved by quantum field theory methods. When the agents imitate each other and respond to recent market volatility, different scaling behavior is obtained. In this case the statistics of price variations is consistent with empirical observations. The interplay between ``rational'' traders whose behavior is derived from fundamental analysis of the stock, including dividends, and ``noise traders'', whose behavior is governed solely by studying the market dynamics, is investigated. When the relative number of rational traders is small, ``bubbles'' often occur, where the market price moves outside the range justified by fundamental market analysis. When the number of rational traders is larger, the market price is generally locked within the price range they define.

Abstract:We discuss an article by Le Bellac and Lévy-Leblond in which they have identified two Galilean limits of electromagnetism (1973 Nuovo Cimento B 14 217–33). We use their results to point out some confusion in the literature, and in the teaching of special relativity and electromagnetism. For instance, it is not widely recognized that there exist two well-defined non-relativistic limits, so that researchers and teachers are likely to utilize an incoherent mixture of both. Recent works have shed new light on the choice of gauge conditions in classical electromagnetism. We retrieve the results of Le Bellac and Lévy-Leblond first by examining orders of magnitudes and then with a Lorentz-like manifestly covariant approach to Galilean covariance based on a five-dimensional Minkowski manifold. We emphasize the Riemann–Lorenz approach based on the vector and scalar potentials as opposed to the Heaviside–Hertz formulation in terms of electromagnetic fields.

From Elasticity to Electromagnetism: Beyond the Mirror

Abstract:The first purpose of this short but striking paper is to revisit Elasticity (EL) and Electromagnetism (EM) by comparing the structure of these two theories and examining with details their well known couplings, in particular piezoelectricity and photoelasticity. Despite the strange Helmholtz and Mach-Lippmann analogies existing between them, no classical technique may provide a common setting. However, unexpected arguments discovered independently by the brothers E. and F. Cosserat in 1909 for EL and by H. Weyl in 1918 for EM are leading to construct a new differential sequence called Spencer sequence in the framework of the formal theory of Lie pseudogroups and to introduce it for the conformal group of space-time with 15 parameters. Then, all the previous explicit couplings can be deduced abstractly and one must just go to a laboratory in order to know about the coupling constants on which they are depending, like in the Hooke or Minkowski constitutive relations existing respectively in EL or EM separately. We finally provide a new combined experimental and theoretical proof of the fact that any 1-form with value in the second order jets (elations) of the conformal group of space-time can be uniquely decomposed into the direct sum of the Ricci tensor R and the electromagnetic field F. This result questions the mathematical foundations of both General Relativity (GR) and Gauge Theory (GT). In particular, the Einstein operator (6 terms) must be thus replaced by the formal adjoint of the Ricci operator (4 terms only) in the study of gravitational waves.
Mathematical Inconsistencies in Dirac Field Theory

Abstract:If a mathematical theory contains incompatible postulates then it is likely that the theory will produce theorems or results that are contradictory. It will be shown that this is the case with Dirac field theory. An example of such a contradiction is the problem asociated with evaluating the Schwinger term. It is generally known that different ways of evaluating this quantity yield different results. It will be shown that the reason for this is that Dirac field theory is mathematically inconsistent, i.e., it contains incompatible assumptions or postulates. The generally accepted definition of the vacuum state must be modified in order to create a consistent theory.

Fluctuational electrodynamics in and out of equilibrium

Abstract:Dispersion forces between neutral material bodies are due to fluctuations of the polarization of the bodies. For bodies in equilibrium these forces are often referred to as Casimir-Lifshitz forces. For bodies in relative motion, in addition to the Casimir-Lifshitz force, a lateral frictional force ("quantum friction", in the zero temperature limit) comes into play. The widely accepted theory of the fluctuation induced forces is based on the "fluctuational electrodynamics" , when the Maxwell equations are supplemented by random current sources responsible for the fluctuations of the medium polarization. The first part of our paper touches on some conceptual issues of the theory, such as the dissipation-less limit and the link between Rytov's approach and quantum electrodynamics. We point out the problems with the dissipation-less plasma model (with its unphysical double pole at zero frequency) which still appears in the literature. The second part of the paper is devoted to "quantum friction", in a broad sense, and it contains some novel material. In particular, it is pointed out that in weakly dissipative systems the friction force may not be a stationary process. It is shown, using an "exact" (nonpertubative) quantum treatment that under appropriate conditions, an instability can occur when the kinetic energy (due to the relative motion between the bodies) is transformed into coherent radiation, exponentially growing in intensity (the instability gets eventually limited by non-linear effects). We also discuss a setup when the two bodies are at rest but a constant electric current is flowing in one of the bodies. One may say that only the electron component of one body is dragged with respect to the other body, unlike the usual setup when the two bodies are in relative motion. Clearly there are differences in the frictional forces between the two setups.

Abstract:We recall that the theory of electromagnetism consists of three building blocks: (a) the inhomogeneous Maxwell equations for the electric and magnetic excitations $(D,H)$ (which reflects charge conservation), (b) the homogeneous Maxwell equations for the electric and magnetic field strengths $(E,B)$ (which reflects flux conservation), and (c) the constitutive relation between $(D,H)$ and $(E,B)$. In the recent paper \cite{Lakhtakia1}, Lakhtakia proposed to change the standard boundary conditions in electrodynamics in order to exclude certain constitutive parameters. We show that this is inadmissible both from the macroscopic and the microscopic points of view.

Abstract:Recent experimental results on slow light heighten interest in nonlinear Maxwell theories. We obtain Galilei covariant equations for electromagnetism by allowing special nonlinearities in the constitutive equations only, keeping Maxwell's equations unchanged. Combining these with linear or nonlinear Schroedinger equations, e.g. as proposed by Doebner and Goldin, yields a Galilean quantum electrodynamics.

Abstract:It was shown recently that unambiguous description of electromagnetic environments requires electromagnetic potentials; knowledge only of electric and magnetic fields is insufficient and can lead to error. Consequences of that demonstration are here applied to propagating fields, such as laser fields. Gauge invariance is replaced by symmetry preservation. This alteration makes it possible to understand how the known failure of the convergence of perturbation expansions in quantum electrodynamics (QED) follows from the fact that QED is incomplete; it does not contain its strong-field limit. Inherent in that demonstration are the strong-field coupling constant and the strong-field alteration of the mass shell of a charged particle. A variety of physically important consequences ensue, including the loss of guidance from Feynman diagrams. The meaning of tests for the precision of QED is questioned since such evaluations apply only to perturbative QED, but not to extensions required for complete QED.

Abstract:In the first part of this paper we review several formalisms which give alternative ways for describing the light. They are: the formalism `baroque' and the Majorana-Oppenheimer form of electrodynamics, the Sachs' theory of Elementary Matter, the Dirac-Fock-Podol'sky model, its development by Staruszkiewicz, the Evans-Vigier ${\bf B}^{(3)}$ field, the theory with an invariant evolution parameter by Horwitz, the analysis of the action-at-a-distance concept, presented recently by Chubykalo and Smirnov-Rueda, and the analysis of the claimed `longitudinality' of the antisymmetric tensor field after quantization. The second part is devoted to the discussion of the Weinberg formalism and its recent development by Ahluwalia and myself. Connections between these models and possible significance of longitudinal modes are also discussed.

Abstract:George Francis FitzGerald is well known to have proposed in 1889, three years before Lorentz, the (physical) contraction of bodies moving in the hypothetical ether, as an "explanation" the null result of the Michelson and Morley experiment. Less known is his proposal of an ether-drift experiment based on an electrostatic system. A simple charged condenser suspended by a wire would be subject to a torque due to the earth's motion. The experiment was done by his pupil Trouton, with Noble, with null result. It was an important independent confirmation of the relativity principle, but it was substantially forgotten. It came back, under the form of a paradox, in the second half of the past century, usefully triggering an in-depth discussion on the electromagnetic energy and momentum flow in stationary systems, in which intuitively one thinks momentum should be zero, but it is not. The solution of the Trouton–Noble paradox, and similar ones, has led to a better understanding of the interplay between electromagnetic field and matter and to develop relevant examples for the university courses.

Abstract:We first write down a very general description of nonlinear classical electrodynamics, making use of generalized constitutive equations and constitutive tensors. Our approach includes non-Lagrangian as well as Lagrangian theories, allows for electromagnetic fields in the widest possible variety of media (anisotropic, piroelectric, chiral and ferromagnetic), and accommodates the incorporation of nonlocal effects. We formulate electric-magnetic duality in terms of the constitutive tensors. We then propose a supersymmetric version of the general constitutive equations, in a superfield approach.

On the ambiguity of solutions of the system of the Maxwell equations

Abstract:This work, that is devoted to the memory of Dr. Andrew Chubykalo and his legacy, is the improved version of the paper published in Annales de la Fondation Louis de Broglie journal. In this article, methods for solving the Maxwell equations are analyzed. First, a method based on the direct differentiation of Maxwell's equations and their reduction to the wave equation for an electric field is considered in detail. It is shown that this method cannot give a closed-form solution that does not contain integrals. The other method, which is most often used by scientists, is based on the introduction of auxiliary quantities such as electromagnetic potentials. But rewriting the Maxwell equations via potentials requires the introduction of an additional constraint - the gauge condition. Some analysis of the expressions for the electric field obtained in two gauges, Coulomb and Lorenz gauges, shows that, contrary to the generally accepted opinion that expressions for the electromagnetic field should be identical in any gauge, the final expressions for the electric field differ in different gauges. Consequently, the uniqueness of the solution of the Maxwell equations is absent.

Do Maxwell's equations need revision? - A methodological note

Abstract:We propose a modification of Maxwell's macroscopic fundamental set of equations in vacuum in order to clarify Faraday's law of induction. Using this procedure, the Lorentz force is no longer separate from Maxwell's equations. The Lorentz transformations are shown to be related to the convective derivative, which is introduced in the electrodynamics of moving bodies. The new formulation is in complete agreement with the actual set of Maxwell's equations for bodies at rest, the only novel feature is a new kind of electromotive force. Heinrich Hertz was the first to propose a similar electrodynamic theory of moving bodies, although its interpretation was based on the existence of the so called "aether". Examining the problem of a moving circuit with this procedure, it is shown that a new force of induction should act on a circuit moving through an inhomogeneous vector potential field. This overlooked induction force is related to the Aharanov-Bohm effect, but can also be related to the classical electromagnetic field when an external magnetic field is acting on the system. Technological issues, such as the so called Marinov motor are also addressed.

Abstract:Our recent theoretical developments related to the nonrelativistic and relativistic fluctuation-electromagnetic interactions of bodies with different temperatures moving translationally and (or) rotationally relative to each other are briefly summarized. Three basic geometrical configurations and physical systems are discussed: "a small particle and a thick plate (i);"a small particle in radiation vacuum background" (ii), and "two thick plates in relative motion (iii) -classical Casimir-Lifshitz configuration with allowance for relative motion and different temperatures of plates. For the third configuration, it is shown that the theory of friction and heat exchange by Levin-Polevoi-Rytov proves to be quite adequate contrary to the settled point of view of many authors.

Magnetic Charge and Dyality Invariance

Abstract:This paper is a critical study of non-standard Maxwellian electrodynamics. It explores two important topics: the inclusion of both magnetic and electric charge to produce what it calls Extended Electrodynamics, and the existence of a symmetry called Dyality Invariance that exchanges electric and magnetic quantities. First, the paper summarizes Extended Electrodynamics, including potentials, gauge transformations, and a new proof of the extended electrodynamic Poynting theorem. A formal Lagrangian derivation of the extended Maxwell equations is also given, but its value in fundamental studies is questioned. The paper then defines Dyality Invariance (form invariance under the so-called Dyality Transformation that exchanges electric and magnetic quantities) and shows it to be a valid symmetry if and only if electrodynamics is given the extended form. The paper suggests that the complete Maxwellian electrodynamics is extended electrodynamics with its dyality invariance. But dyality can be interpreted either actively or passively. Since magnetic charge has not been observed experimentally, the active interpretation is ruled out. But a passive interpretation can be used to avoid writing magnetic source and potential terms explicitly. The paper also refutes the idea that dyality invariance would permit a magnetic charge to be transformed away even if one existed. If nonzero magnetic charge exists, then experimental evidence for its existence cannot be hidden by a dyality transformation.
