Abstract:Discussions surrounding the nature of the infinite in mathematics have been underway for two millennia. Mathematicians, philosophers, and theologians have all taken part. The basic question has been whether the infinite exists only in potential or exists in actuality. Only at the end of the 19th century, a set theory was created that works with the actual infinite. Initially, this theory was rejected by other mathematicians. The creator behind the theory, the German mathematician Georg Cantor, felt all the more the need to challenge the long tradition that only recognised the potential infinite. In this, he received strong support from the interest among German neothomist philosophers, who, under the influence of the Encyclical of Pope Leo XIII, Aeterni Patris, began to take an interest in Cantor's work. Gradually, his theory even acquired approval from the Vatican theologians. Cantor was able to firmly defend his work and at the turn of the 20th century, he succeeded in gaining its acceptance. The storm that had accompanied its original rejection now accompanied its acceptance. The theory became the basis on which modern mathematics was and is still founded, even though the majority of mathematicians know nothing of its original theological justification. Set theory, which today rests on an axiomatic foundation, no longer poses the question of the existence of actual infinite sets. The answer is expressed in its basic axiom: natural numbers form an infinite set. No substantiation has been discovered other than Cantor's: the set of all natural numbers exists from eternity as an idea in God's intellect.

A Generalization of the Cantor-Dedekind Continuum with Nilpotent Infinitesimals

Abstract:We introduce a generalization of the Cantor-Dedekind continuum with explicit infinitesimals. These infinitesimals are used as numbers obeying the same basic rules as the other elements of the generalized continuum, in accordance with Leibniz's original intuition, but with an important difference: their product is null, as the Dutch theologian Bernard Nieuwentijt sustained, against Leibniz's opinion. The starting-point is the concept of shadow, and from it we define indiscernibility (the central concept) and monad. Monads of points have a global-local nature, because in spite of being infinite-dimensional real affine spaces with the same cardinal as the whole generalized continuum, they are closed intervals with length 0. Monads and shadows (initially defined for points) are then extended to any subset of the new continuum, and their study reveals interesting results of preservation in the areas of set theory and topology. All these concepts do not depend on a definition of limit in the new continuum; yet using them we obtain the basic results of the differential calculus. Finally, we give two examples illustrating how the global-local nature of the monad of a real number can be applied to the differential treatment of certain singularities.

Abstract:A short phenomenological account of the genesis and evolution of the universe is presented with emphasis on the primordial phases as well as its physical composition, i.e. dark matter and dark energy. We discuss Einstein's theory of General Relativity and its consequences for the birth of modern relativistic astrophysics. We introduce the Big-Bang theory of Mons. Lemaitre as well as the competing theory of the Steady State Universe of Fred Hoyle. Since Big-Bang theory appeared quite in agreement with Christian doctrine of creation, Pope Pius XII delivered a message to the pontifical Academy of Sciences in 1951 claiming a certain agreement between the creation account in the book of Genesis and the Big-Bang theory (a concordist view), a position which he did not repeat later. On the other hand, Lemaitre always kept separate the scientific and theological planes as two parallel "lines" never intersecting, i.e., as two complementary "magisteria". Similar kind of tensions, between science and theology, emerge also today with the Hartle-Hawking solution to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in quantum cosmology and its related speculations. To avoid some sort of confusion between theological and physics concepts, we, briefly, summarise the concept of creation in Christian theology.

Abstract:We introduce some algebraic geometric models in cosmology related to the "boundaries" of space-time: Big Bang, Mixmaster Universe, Penrose's crossovers between aeons. We suggest to model the kinematics of Big Bang using the algebraic geometric (or analytic) blow up of a point $x$. This creates a boundary which consists of the projective space of tangent directions to $x$ and possibly of the light cone of $x$. We argue that time on the boundary undergoes the Wick rotation and becomes purely imaginary. The Mixmaster (Bianchi IX) model of the early history of the universe is neatly explained in this picture by postulating that the reverse Wick rotation follows a hyperbolic geodesic connecting imaginary time axis to the real one. Penrose's idea to see the Big Bang as a sign of crossover from "the end of previous aeon" of the expanding and cooling Universe to the "beginning of the next aeon" is interpreted as an identification of a natural boundary of Minkowski space at infinity with the Big Bang boundary.

Abstract:An atomic model of the Big Bang has been developed on the basis of quantum geometrodynamics with a nonzero Hamiltonian and on the concept of gravitation developed by Logunov asymptotically combined with the Gliner’s idea of a material interpretation of the cosmological constant. The Lemaître primordial atom in superpace-time, whose spatial coordinate is the so-called scaling factor of the Logunov metric of the effective Riemann space, acts as the Big Bang model. The primordial atom in superspace-time corresponds to spatialtime structures(spheres, lines, and surfaces of a level) of the Minkowski spacetime real within the Logunov gravitation theory, the foregoing structures being filled with a scalar field with a negative density of potential energy.

Abstract:Over the past century, rooted in the theory of general relativity, cosmology has developed a very successful physical model of the universe: the {\em big-bang model}. Its construction followed different stages to incorporate nuclear processes, the understanding of the matter present in the universe, a description of the early universe and of the large scale structure. This model has been confronted to a variety of observations that allow one to reconstruct its expansion history, its thermal history and the structuration of matter. Hence, what we refer to as the big-bang model today is radically different from what one may have had in mind a century ago. This construction changed our vision of the universe, both on observable scales and for the universe as a whole. It offers in particular physical models for the origins of the atomic nuclei, of matter and of the large scale structure. This text summarizes the main steps of the construction of the model, linking its main predictions to the observations that back them up. It also discusses its weaknesses, the open questions and problems, among which the need for a dark sector including dark matter and dark energy.

Abstract:It is advisable to avoid and, even better, demystify such grandiose terms as "infinity" or "singularity" in the description of the cosmos. Its proliferation does not positively contribute to the understanding of key concepts that are essential for an updated account of its origin and evolutionary history. It will be here argued that, as a matter of fact, there are no infinities in physics, in the real world: all that appears, in any given formulation of nature by means of mathematical equations, actually arises from extrapolations, which are made beyond the bounds of validity of the equations themselves. Such a crucial point is rather well known, but too often forgotten, and is discussed in this paper with several examples; namely, the famous Big Bang singularity and others, which appeared before in classical mechanics and electrodynamics, and notably in the quantization of field theories. A brief description of the Universe's history and evolution follows. Special emphasis is put on what is presently known, from detailed observations of the cosmos and, complementarily, from advanced experiments of very high-energy physics. To conclude, a future perspective on how this knowledge might soon improve is given.

Debunking Cantor: New Set-Theoretical and Logical Considerations

Abstract:For more than a century, Cantor's theory of transfinite numbers has played a pivotal role in set theory, with ramifications that extend to many areas of mathematics. This article extends earlier findings with a fresh look at the critical facts of Cantor's theory: i) Cantor's widely renowned Diagonalization Argument (CDA) is fully refuted by a set of counter-examples that expose the fallacy of this proof. ii) The logical inconsistencies of CDA are revisited, exposing the short-comings of CDA's implementation of the method of proof by contradiction. iii) The denumerability of the power set of the set of the natural numbers, P(N), is substantiated by a proof that takes full account of all the infinite subsets of N. Such a result confirms the denumerability of the set of the real numbers, R, and with it the countable nature of the continuum. iv) Given that the denumerable character of (probably) all infinite sets makes their comparison in terms of one-to-one correspondences a rather pointless exercise, a new concept of relative cardinality is introduced which facilitates a quantitative evaluation of their different magnitudes.

Abstract:Despite some discomfort with this grandly philosophical topic, I do in fact hope to address a venerable pair of philosophical chestnuts: mathematical truth and existence. My plan is to set out three possible stands on these issues, for an exercise in compare and contrast. A word of warning, though, to philosophical purists (and perhaps of comfort to more mathematical readers): I will explore these philosophical positions with an eye to their interconnections with some concrete issues of set theoretic method. Let me begin with a brief look at what to count as ‘philosophy’. To some extent, this is a matter of usage, and mathematicians sometimes classify as ‘philosophical’ any considerations other than outright proofs. So, for example, discussions of the propriety of particular mathematical methods would fall under this heading: should we prefer analytic or synthetic approaches in geometry? Should elliptic functions be treated in terms of explicit representations (as in Weierstrass) or geometrically (as in Riemann)? Should we allow impredicative definitions? Should we restrict ourselves to a logic without bivalence or the law of the excluded middle? Also included in this category would be the trains of thought that shaped our central concepts: should a function always be defined by a formula? Should a group be required to have an inverse for every element? Should ideal divisors be defined contextually or explicitly, treated computationally or abstractly? In addition, there are more general questions concerning mathematical values, aims and goals: Should we strive for powerful theories or low-risk theories? How much stress should be placed on the fact or promise of physical applications? How important are interconnections between the various branches of mathematics? These philosophical questions of method naturally include several peculiar to set theory: should set theorists focus their efforts on drawing consequences for areas of interest to mathematicians outside mathematical logic? Should exploration of the standard axioms of ZFC be preferred to the exploration and exploitation of new axioms? How should axioms for set theory be chosen? What would a solution to the Continuum Problem look like?

Abstract:In this article, we explore the notion of infinity by studying Cantor's contribution to this field. A brief history of set theory is given. As an example of infinity, we consider Hilbert's famous hotel. A graphical construction is used to demonstrate the countability of rationals. Cantor's diagonal procedure is explored, demonstrating that the infinity of real numbers is greater than that of integers. There is therefore a hierarchy of infinities, enabling us to elaborate on the continuum hypothesis, which remains an unsolved problem in mathematics.

Abstract:We describe how cosmology has converged towards a beautiful model of the Universe: the Big Bang Universe. We praise this model, but show there is a dark side to it. This dark side is usually called ``the cosmological problems'': a set of coincidences and fine tuning features required for the Big Bang Universe to be possible. After reviewing these ``riddles'' we show how they have acted as windows into the very early Universe, revealing new physics and new cosmology just as the Universe came into being. We describe inflation, pre Big Bang, and varying speed of light theories. At the end of the millennium, these proposals are seen respectively as a paradigm, a tentative idea, and outright speculation.

Abstract:The galilean genesis scenario is an alternative to inflation in which the universe starts expanding from Minkowski in the asymptotic past by violating the null energy condition stably. Several concrete models of galilean genesis have been constructed so far within the context of galileon-type scalar-field theories. We give a generic, unified description of the galilean genesis scenario in terms of the Horndeski theory, i.e., the most general scalar-tensor theory with second-order field equations. In doing so we generalize the previous models to have a new parameter (denoted by {\alpha}) which results in controlling the evolution of the Hubble rate. The background dynamics is investigated to show that the generalized galilean genesis solution is an attractor, similarly to the original model. We also study the nature of primordial perturbations in the generalized galilean genesis scenario. In all the models described by our generalized genesis Lagrangian, amplification of tensor perturbations does not occur as opposed to what happens in quasi-de Sitter inflation. We show that the spectral index of curvature perturbations is determined solely from the parameter {\alpha} and does not depend on the other details of the model. In contrast to the original model, a nearly scale-invariant spectrum of curvature perturbations is obtained for a specific choice of {\alpha}.

Abstract:Alexander Friedmann and Georges Lemaître are undoubtedly the real fathers of Big Bang cosmologies. In this article I study the influences their work underwent due to some religious as well as anti-religious ideas. During his career Lemaître faced criticisms coming from non-believing scientists, who reproached him (wrongly) to have developed his primeval atom cosmology for conciliatory reasons. In the former case of Friedmann, we know that his 1922 proposal of a "creation of the world out of nothing" was criticized by Einstein for metaphysical reasons. The essence of such hostile reactions is the fact that presumably "good" scientific contents should not be influenced by religious ideas. Nevertheless, metaphysical and theological ideas can play an important role inside the science research processes, as an epistemological tool helping to clarify the use of some fundamental notions.

Abstract:The AdS/CFT correspondence is used to describe five-dimensional cosmology with a big crunch singularity in terms of super-Yang-Mills theory on R times S^3 deformed by a potential which is unbounded below. Classically, a Higgs field in the dual theory rolls to infinity in finite time. But since the S^3 is finite, the unstable mode spreads quantum mechanically and the singularity is resolved when self-adjoint boundary conditions are imposed at infinity. Asymptotic freedom of the coupling governing the instability gives us computational control and the quantum spreading provides a UV cutoff on particle creation. The bulk interpretation of our result is a quantum transition from a big crunch to a big bang. An intriguing consequence of the near scale-invariance of the dual theory is that a nearly scale-invariant spectrum of stress-energy perturbations is automatically generated in the boundary theory. We comment on implications for more realistic cosmologies.
Bolzano's Conjecture: Measuring the Numerosity of Infinite Sets

Abstract:Bolzano and Cantor were the first mathematicians to make significant attempts to measure the size (numerosity) of different infinite collections. They differed in their methodological approaches, with Cantor's prevailing. This led to the foundation of the theory of sets as well as Cantor's transfinite arithmetic. This paper argues that Bolzano's conjecture is correct and that Euclid's principle, 'that the whole is greater than a part', should be considered as a necessary condition for the quantification of infinite sets (rather than bijection). Cantor had concluded that the rational and the algebraic numbers were of the same size as the natural numbers, whilst, in contrast, the real numbers were a larger set. Using Cantor's methods it is shown in this paper that the rational numbers are of larger size than the natural numbers, thus showing that bijection is not a reliable measure of the size of infinite sets. It is also concluded, using mathematical induction, that different 'countably' infinite sets can have various different sizes. The implications for theorems using bijection as a measure of size is then briefly discussed. There already exist new methods of measuring numerosity, based on Euclid's principle, which may develop a consistent system of infinite arithmetic.

Abstract:We discuss the way non-perturbative quantization of cosmological spacetimes in loop quantum cosmology provides insights on the physics of Planck scale and the resolution of big bang singularity. In recent years, rigorous examination of mathematical and physical aspects of the quantum theory has led to a consistent quantization which is consistent and physically viable and some early ideas have been ruled out. The latter include so called `physical effects' originating from modifications to inverse scale factors in the flat models. The singularity resolution is understood to originate from the non-local nature of curvature in the quantum theory and the underlying polymer representation. Using an exactly solvable model various insights have been gained. The model predicts a generic occurrence of bounce for states in the physical Hilbert space and a supremum for the spectrum of the energy density operator. It also provides answers to the growth of fluctuations, showing that semi-classicality is preserved to an amazing degree across the bounce.

Abstract:Gödel proved in the 1930s in his famous Incompleteness Theorems that not all statements in mathematics can be proven or disproven from the accepted ZFC axioms. A few years later he showed the celebrated result that Cantor's Continuum Hypothesis is consistent. Afterwards, Gödel raised the question whether, despite the fact that there is no reasonable axiomatic framework for all mathematical statements, natural statements, such as Cantor's Continuum Hypothesis, can be decided via extending ZFC by large cardinal axioms. While this question has been answered negatively, the problem of finding good axioms that decide natural mathematical statements remains open. There is a compelling candidate for an axiom that could solve Gödel's problem: V = Ultimate-L. In addition, due to recent results the Sealing scenario has gained a lot of attention. We describe these candidates as well as their impact and relationship.

Abstract:The initial cosmological singularity in the framework of the general theory of relativity is resolved by introducing the effect of the uncertainty principle of quantum theory without violating conventional laws of physics. A plausible account of the mechanism of the big bang, analogous to that of a nuclear explosion, is given and the currently accepted Planck temperature of about 10^(32)K at the beginning of the big bang is predicted. Big in Reverse Mathematics: the uncountability of the real numbers

Abstract:The uncountability of $\mathbb{R}$ is one of its most basic properties, known far outside of mathematics. Cantor's 1874 proof of the uncountability of $\mathbb{R}$ even appears in the very first paper on set theory, i.e. a historical milestone. In this paper, we study the uncountability of $\mathbb{R}$ in Kohlenbach's higher-order Reverse Mathematics (RM for short), in the guise of the following principle: $$\hbox{for a countable set $A\subset \mathbb{R}$, there exists $y\in \mathbb{R}\setminus A$.}$$ An important conceptual observation is that the usual definition of countable set -- based on injections or bijections to $\mathbb{N}$ -- does not seem suitable for the RM-study of mainstream mathematics; we also propose a suitable (equivalent over strong systems) alternative definition of countable set, namely union over $\mathbb{N}$ of finite sets; the latter is known from the literature and closer to how countable sets occur 'in the wild'. We identify a considerable number of theorems that are equivalent to the centred theorem based on our alternative definition. Perhaps surprisingly, our equivalent theorems involve most basic properties of the Riemann integral, regulated or bounded variation functions, Blumberg's theorem, and Volterra's early work circa 1881. Our equivalences are also robust, promoting the uncountability of $\mathbb{R}$ to the status of 'big' system in RM.

Abstract:There is a common expectation that the big-bang singularity must be resolved in quantum gravity but it is not clear how this can be achieved. A major obstacle here is the difficulty of interpreting wave-functions in quantum gravity. The standard quantum mechanical framework requires a notion of time evolution and a proper definition of an invariant inner product having a probability interpretation, both of which are seemingly problematic in quantum gravity. We show that these two issues can actually be solved by introducing the embedding coordinates as dynamical variables à la Isham and Kuchar. The extended theory is identical to general relativity but has a larger group of gauge symmetries. The Wheeler-DeWitt equations describe the change of the wave-function from one arbitrary spacelike slice to another, however the constraint algebra makes this evolution purely kinematical and furthermore enforces the wave-function to be constrained in the subspace of zero-energy states. An inner product can also be introduced having all the necessary requirements. In this formalism big-bang appears as a finite field space boundary on which certain boundary conditions must be imposed for mathematical consistency. We explicitly illustrate this point both in the full theory and in the minisuperspace approximation.
