Abstract:We give a canonical form for a complex matrix, whose square is normal, under transformations of unitary similarity as well as a canonical form for a real matrix, whose square is normal, under transformations of orthogonal similarity.

Abstract:We show that any nonsingular (real or complex) square matrix can be factorized into a product of at most three normal matrices, one of which is unitary, another is selfadjoint with eigenvalues in the open right half-plane, and the third one is normal involutory with a neutral negative eigenspace (we call the last matrix normal neutral involutory). Here the words normal, unitary, selfadjoint and neutral are understood with respect to an indefinite inner product.

Abstract:We represent and classify pairs of commuting isometries $(V_1, V_2)$ acting on Hilbert spaces that satisfy the condition \[ [V_1^*, V_2] = \text{compact} + \text{normal}, \] where $[V_1^*, V_2] := V_1^* V_2 - V_2 V_1^*$ is the cross-commutator of $(V_1, V_2)$. The precise description of such pairs also gives a complete and concrete set of unitary invariants. The basic building blocks of representations of such pairs consist of four distinguished pairs of commuting isometries. One of them relies on some peculiar examples of invariant subspaces tracing back to Rudin's intricate constructions of analytic functions on the bidisc. Along the way, we present a rank formula for a general pair of commuting isometries that looks to be the first of its kind.

Norm Inequalities for Hilbert space operators with Applications

Abstract:Several unitarily invariant norm inequalities and numerical radius inequalities for Hilbert space operators are studied. We investigate some necessary and sufficient conditions for the parallelism of two bounded operators. For a finite rank operator $A,$ it is shown that \begin{eqnarray*} \|A\|_{p} &\leq &\left(\textit{rank} \, A\right)^{1/{2p}} \|A\|_{2p} \,\, \leq \,\, \left(\textit{rank} \, A\right)^{{(2p-1)}/{2p^2}} \|A\|_{2p^2}, \quad \textit{for all $p\geq 1 $} \end{eqnarray*} where $\|\cdot\|_p$ is the Schatten $p$-norm. If $\{ \lambda_n(A) \}$ is a listing of all non-zero eigenvalues (with multiplicity) of a compact operator $A$, then we show that \begin{eqnarray*} \sum_{n} \left|\lambda_n(A)\right|^{p} &\leq& \frac12 \| A\|_{ p}^{ p} + \frac12 \| A^2\|_{p/2}^{p/2}, \quad \textit{for all $p\geq 2$} \end{eqnarray*} which improves the classical Weyl's inequality $\sum_{n} \left|\lambda_n(A)\right|^{p} \leq \| A\|_{ p}^{ p}$ [Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. USA 1949]. For an $n\times n$ matrix $A$, we show that the function $p\to n^{-{1}/{p}}\|A\|_p$ is monotone increasing on $p\geq 1,$ complementing the well known decreasing nature of $p\to \|A\|_p.$ \indent As an application of these inequalities, we provide an upper bound for the sum of the absolute values of the zeros of a complex polynomial. As another application we provide a refined upper bound for the energy of a graph $G$, namely, $\mathcal{E}(G) \leq \sqrt{2m\left(\textit{rank Adj(G)} \right)},$ where $m$ is the number of edges, improving on a bound by McClelland in $1971$.

Abstract:In this paper, certain connections between complex symmetric operators and anti-automorphisms of singly generated C*-algebras are established. This provides a C*-algebra approach to the norm closure problem for complex symmetric operators. For T is an element of B(H) satisfying C*(T) boolean AND K(H) = {0}, we give several characterizations for T to be a norm limit of complex symmetric operators. As applications, we give concrete characterizations for weighted shifts with nonzero weights to be norm limits of complex symmetric operators. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Garcia and Poore. On the other hand, it is proved that an essentially normal operator is a norm limit of complex symmetric operators if and only if it is complex symmetric. We obtain a canonical decomposition for essentially normal operators which are complex symmetric.

Abstract:Let B(H) denote the Banach algebra of all bounded linear operators on a complex Hilbert space H with dim H >= 3, and let A and B be subsets of B(H) which contain all rank one operators. Suppose F(.) is a unitary invariant norm, the pseudo spectra, the pseudo spectral radius, the C-numerical range, or the C-numerical radius for some finite rank operator C. The structure is determined for surjective maps.1, : A B satisfying F(A*B) = F(Phi(A)*Phi(B)) for all A, B is an element of A. Is This a New Class of Matrices?

Abstract:We consider a new class of matrices associated to a real square matrix $A$ and to a vector $\vec{c} \in \{-1,1\}^n$ such that $c_1=1$ by using a map $\varphi_{\vec{c}}$ which turns out to be a conjugation of a matrix $A$ by a signature matrix. It is shown that every such matrix is similar and congruent to a matrix $A$ and that they have same permanental polynomials. There are $2^{n-1}$ maps $\varphi_{\vec{c}}$ and they form an abelian group under the composition of maps isomorphic to the group $({\mathbb{Z}_2}^{n-1}, +)$. A decomposition of matrices, on a symmetric and antisymmetric matrix under a map $\varphi_{\vec{c}}$, is considered. Particularly, it is shown that sum of all principal minors of the order two of a matrix $A$ is equal to the sum of all principal minors of the order two of their symmetric and antisymmetric parts. It is shown that any symmetric matrix and any antisymmetric matrix under the map $\varphi_{\vec{c}}$ are simultaneously permutation similar to certain block matrices which have two blocks. Finally, for a fixed matrix $A$, it is proved that the number of different matrices $\varphi_{\vec{c}}(A)$ is $2^{n-t}$, where $t$ is the number of connected components of the graph $G$ whose adjacency matrix is $A$.

Abstract:We improve and expand in two directions the theory of norms on complex matrices induced by random vectors. We first provide a simple proof of the classification of weakly unitarily invariant norms on the Hermitian matrices. We use this to extend the main theorem in [7] from exponent $d\geq 2$ to $d \geq 1$. Our proofs are much simpler than the originals: they do not require Lewis' framework for group invariance in convex matrix analysis. This clarification puts the entire theory on simpler foundations while extending its range of applicability.

Abstract:In this paper, we give new characterizations of self-adjoint and normal operators on a Hilbert space . Among other results, we show that if is a finite-dimensional Hilbert space and , then T is self-adjoint if and only if there exists such that . If in addition, T and are invertible, then T is self-adjoint if and only if . Considering the polar decomposition of , we show that T is self-adjoint if and only if T is p -hyponormal (log-hyponormal) and U is self-adjoint. Also, if is a log-hyponormal operator and the spectrum of U is contained within the set of vertices of a regular polygon, then T is necessarily normal.

Let $\varphi$ be a linear fractional self-map of $\mathbb D$. Abstract:Dual quaternion matrices have recently received significant attention in research. In this paper, we primarily investigate unitarily invariant norms of dual quaternion matrices. We first introduce symmetric gauge function on dual numbers and establish a one-to-one correspondence between unitarily invariant norms of dual quaternion matrices and the symmetric gauge function of their singular values. Next, we introduce Schatten p -norm and Fan k -norm on dual quaternion matrices. These are two important types of unitarily invariant norms. We also present several inequalities related to the Schatten p -norm and Fan k -norm.

Abstract:Using the approach proposed in [5] , in an infinite-dimensional separable complex Hilbert space we give abstract constructions of families $\{{\mathcal T}_z\}_{{\rm Im\,} z>0}$ of closed densely defined symmetric operators with the properties: (I) the domain of ${\mathcal T}_z^2$ is a core of ${\mathcal T}_z$, (II) the domain of ${\mathcal T}_z^2$ is dense but note a core of ${\mathcal T}_z$, (III) the domain of ${\mathcal T}_z^2$ is nontrivial but non-dense. For this purpose a class of maximal dissipative operators is defined and studied. The case ${\rm dom\,} {\mathcal T}_z^2=\{0\}$ has been considered in [5].

Abstract:We consider the question of, given operators $A$, $Z$ and a sequence of invertible operators $U_n\to Z$, whether the sequence $U_nAU_n^{-1}$ is bounded in norm, as well as generalizations of this where $U_nAU_n^{-1}$ is modified by some bounded linear map on bounded linear operators. In the setting of Hilbert spaces, we provide a complete classification in terms of algebraic criteria of those $A$ for which such a sequence exists, as long as $Z$ is of generalized index zero, which always holds in finite-dimensional contexts. In the process, we prove that particular coefficients arising in inverses of certain good paths going to $Z$ can also be classified in terms of an entirely algebraic criterion.
