Abstract:I will review recent progress in our understanding of the nuclear force. In the course of the 1990's, so-called high-precision, charge-dependent nucleon-nucleon potentials have been constructed which are, essentially, phenomenological models. These potentials are now commonly used as input for exact few-body calculations and microscopic nuclear many-body theory. I will critically analyses those models and point out their strenghts and weaknesses. Particular emphasis will be on charge dependence. Other recent research was conducted on a more basic level: understanding the nuclear force in terms of the fundamental theory of strong interactions, QCD. Predictions from this sector are typically qualitative in nature. Thus, the main problem of the current status in the field is that quantitative models for the nuclear force have a poor theoretical background, while theory based models yield poor results. The chief challenge for the new millenium is to overcome this discrepancy. Chiral effective field theory may be a suitable tool to solve the problem.

Abstract:In this review we discuss the current status of research in nuclear physics which is being carried out in different centers in the World. For this purpose we supply a short account of the development in the area which evolved over the last 9 decades, since the discovery of the neutron. The evolution of the physics of the atomic nucleus went through many stages as more data become available. We briefly discuss models introduced to discern the physics behind the experimental discoveries, such as the shell model, the collective model, the statistical model, the interacting boson model, etc., some of these models may be seemingly in conflict with each other, but this was shown to be only apparent. The richness of the ideas and abundance of theoretical models attests to the important fact that the nucleus is a really singular system in the sense that it evolves from two-body bound states such as the deuteron, to few-body bound states, such as $^4$He, $^7$Li, $^9$Be etc. and up the ladder to heavier bound nuclei containing up to more than 200 nucleons. Clearly statistical mechanics does not work for such finite system, neither does other theories applicable to condensed matter systems. The richness of nuclear physics stems from these restrictions. New theories and models are presently being developed. Theories of the structure and reactions of neutron-rich and proton-rich nuclei, called exotic nuclei, halo nuclei, or Borromean nuclei deal with the wealth of experimental data available in the last 35 years. Further, nuclear astrophysics and stellar and Big Bang nucleosynthesis have become a more mature subject. Due to limited space, this review only covers a few selected topics, mainly those with which the authors have worked with.

Abstract:The structure and reactions of light nuclei represent fundamental and formidable challenges for microscopic theory based on realistic strong interaction potentials. Several ab initio methods have now emerged that provide nearly exact solutions for some nuclear properties. The ab initio no core shell model (NCSM) and the no core full configuration (NCFC) method, frame this quantum many-particle problem as a large sparse matrix eigenvalue problem where one evaluates the Hamiltonian matrix in a basis space consisting of many-fermion Slater determinants and then solves for a set of the lowest eigenvalues and their associated eigenvectors. The resulting eigenvectors are employed to evaluate a set of experimental quantities to test the underlying potential. For fundamental problems of interest, the matrix dimension often exceeds 1010 and the number of nonzero matrix elements may saturate available storage on present-day leadership class facilities. We survey recent results and advances in solving this large sparse matrix eigenvalue problem. We also outline the challenges that lie ahead for achieving further breakthroughs in fundamental nuclear theory using these ab initio approaches.

Abstract:Nucleus is essentially composed of protons and neutrons, which are commonly known as nucleons. Interestingly, some of nucleons may group together and exhibit collective behavior inside a nucleus. Such clustering effects have been known since the early stages of nuclear physics because of the observation and description of α-cluster decay from many heavy nuclei. Subsequent studies demonstrated that cluster structures exist in many nuclear systems, especially in weakly bound or excited states, and are complementary to the shell-like structures. In this review article, we provide a brief historical recall of the field, and follow it with a conceptual and logical description of the major theoretical models that have been frequently applied in the literature to describe nuclear clustering. Experimental methods and progress are outlined, recent outcomes are emphasized, and perspectives relevant to future studies of heavy neutron-rich systems are discussed.

Abstract:Nuclear astrophysics is a multi-disciplinary field with a huge demand for nuclear data. Among its various fields, stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis are clearly the most closely related to nuclear physics. The need for nuclear data for astrophysics applications challenges experimental techniques as well as the robustness and predictive power of present nuclear models. Despite impressive progress for the last years, major problems and puzzles remain. In the present contribution, only a few nuclear astrophysics specific aspects are discussed. These concern some experimental progress related to the measurement of key reactions of relevance for the so-called s-and p-processes of nucleosynthesis, the theoretical effort in predicting nuclear properties of exotic neutron-rich nuclei of interest for the r-process nucleosynthesis, and the recent introduction of machine learning techniques in nuclear astrophysics applications.

Nuclear forces and their impact on neutron-rich nuclei and neutron-rich matter

Abstract:We review the impact of nuclear forces on matter at neutron-rich extremes. Recent results have shown that neutron-rich nuclei become increasingly sensitive to three-nucleon forces, which are at the forefront of theoretical developments based on effective field theories of quantum chromodynamics. This includes the formation of shell structure, the spectroscopy of exotic nuclei, and the location of the neutron dripline. Nuclear forces also constrain the properties of neutron-rich matter, including the neutron skin, the symmetry energy, and the structure of neutron stars. We first review our understanding of three-nucleon forces and show how chiral effective field theory makes unique predictions for many-body forces. Then, we survey results with three-nucleon forces in neutron-rich oxygen and calcium isotopes and neutron-rich matter, which have been explored with a range of many-body methods. Three-nucleon forces therefore provide an exciting link between theoretical, experimental and observational nuclear physics frontiers.

Reactions at polymer interfaces: A Monte Carlo Simulation

Abstract:Reactions at a strongly segregated interface of a symmetric binary polymer blend are investigated via Monte Carlo simulations. End functionalized homopolymers of different species interact at the interface instantaneously and irreversibly to form diblock copolymers. The simulations, in the framework of the bond fluctuation model, determine the time dependence of the copolymer production in the initial and intermediate time regime for small reactant concentration $\rho_0 R_g^3=0.163 ... 0.0406$. The results are compared to recent theories and simulation data of a simple reaction diffusion model. For the reactant concentration accessible in the simulation, no linear growth of the copolymer density is found in the initial regime, and a $\sqrt{t}$-law is observed in the intermediate stage.

Three-Nucleon Forces: Implementation and Applications to Atomic Nuclei and Dense Matter

Abstract:Recent advances in nuclear structure theory have significantly enlarged the accessible part of the nuclear landscape via ab initio many-body calculations. These developments open new ways for microscopic studies of light, medium-mass and heavy nuclei as well as nuclear matter and represent an important step toward a systematic and comprehensive understanding of atomic nuclei across the nuclear chart. While remarkable agreement has been found between different many-body methods for a given nuclear Hamiltonian, the comparison with experiment and the understanding of theoretical uncertainties are still important open questions. The observed discrepancies to experiment indicate deficiencies in presently used nuclear interactions and operators. Chiral effective field theory (EFT) allows to systematically derive contributions to nucleon-nucleon (NN), three-nucleon (3N) and higher-body interactions including estimates of theoretical uncertainties. While the treatment of NN interactions in many-body calculations is well established, the calculation of 3N interactions and their incorporation in ab initio frameworks is still a frontier. This work reviews in detail recent and current developments on the derivation and implementation of improved 3N interactions and provides a comprehensive introduction to fundamental methods for their practical calculation and representation. We further give an overview of novel and established methods that facilitate the inclusion and treatment of 3N interactions in ab initio nuclear structure frameworks and present a selection of the latest calculations of atomic nuclei as well as nuclear matter based on state-of-the-art nuclear NN and 3N interactions derived within chiral EFT. Finally, we discuss ongoing efforts, open questions and future directions.

Emerging Concepts in Nuclear Structure Based on the Shell Model

Abstract:Some emerging concepts of nuclear structure are overviewed. (i) Background: the many-body quantum structure of atomic nucleus, a complex system comprising protons and neutrons (called nucleons collectively), has been studied largely based on the idea of the quantum liquid (à la Landau), where nucleons are quasiparticles moving in a (mean) potential well, with weak “residual” interactions between nucleons. The potential is rigid in general, although it can be anisotropic. While this view was a good starting point, it is time to look into kaleidoscopic aspects of the nuclear structure brought in by underlying dynamics and nuclear forces. (ii) Methods: exotic features as well as classical issues are investigated from fresh viewpoints based on the shell model and nucleon–nucleon interactions. The 70-year progress of the shell–model approach, including effective nucleon–nucleon interactions, enables us to do this. (iii) Results: we go beyond the picture of the solid potential well by activating the monopole interactions of the nuclear forces. This produces notable consequences in key features such as the shell/magic structure, the shape deformation, the dripline, etc. These consequences are understood with emerging concepts such as shell evolution (including type-II), T-plot, self-organization (for collective bands), triaxial-shape dominance, new dripline mechanism, etc. The resulting predictions and analyses agree with experiment. (iv) Conclusion: atomic nuclei are surprisingly richer objects than initially thought.

Abstract:Compound-nuclear processes play an important role for nuclear physics applications and are crucial for our understanding of the nuclear many-body problem. Despite intensive interest in this area, some of the available theoretical developments have not yet been fully tested and implemented. We revisit the general theory of compound-nuclear reactions, discuss descriptions of pre-equilibrium reactions, and consider extensions that are needed in order to get cross section information from indirect measurements.

Abstract:Over the last decade, new developments in Similarity Renormalization Group techniques and nuclear many-body methods have dramatically increased the capabilities of ab initio nuclear structure and reaction theory. Ground and excited-state properties can be computed up to the tin region, and from the proton to the presumptive neutron drip lines, providing unprecedented opportunities to confront two- plus three-nucleon interactions from chiral Effective Field Theory with experimental data. In this contribution, I will give a broad survey of the current status of nuclear many-body approaches, and I will use selected results to discuss both achievements and open issues that need to be addressed in the coming decade.

Abstract:Several important milestones and hot topics in nuclear physics researches are reviewed. The discoveries of the atomic nucleus and its components are introduced firstly, followed by the corresponding nuclear bulk properties, including the nuclear masses, and radii, and the establishment of the nuclear shell model based on these discoveries. By examining the spin-orbital potential leading to the nuclear shell model, the nuclear spin and pseudospin symmetries, are discussed. As one of the most important aspects in nuclear physics, the nuclear rotation excitation dated back to 1960s, is reviewed in detail. Finally the chances and challenges for nuclear physics in the twenty-first century are provided based on some selected hot topics and important issues in current nuclear physics frontiers.

Abstract:How does subatomic matter organize itself? Neutron stars are cosmic laboratories uniquely poised to answer this fundamental question that lies at the heart of nuclear science. Newly commissioned rare isotope facilities, telescopes operating across the entire electromagnetic spectrum, and ever more sensitive gravitational wave detectors will probe the properties of neutron-rich matter with unprecedented precision over an enormous range of densities. Yet, a coordinated effort between observation, experiment, and theoretical research is of paramount importance for realizing the full potential of these investments. Theoretical nuclear physics provides valuable insights into the properties of neutron-rich matter in regimes that are not presently accessible to experiment or observation. In particular, nuclear density functional theory is likely the only tractable framework that can bridge the entire nuclear landscape by connecting finite nuclei to neutron stars. This compelling connection is the main scope of the present review.

Abstract:There has been significant recent progress in solving the long-standing problems of how nuclear shell structure and collective motion emerge from underlying microscopic inter-nucleon interactions. We review a selection of recent significant results within the ab initio No Core Shell Model (NCSM) closely tied to three major factors enabling this progress: (1) improved nuclear interactions that accurately describe the experimental two-nucleon and three-nucleon interaction data; (2) advances in algorithms to simulate the quantum many-body problem with strong interactions; and (3) continued rapid development of high-performance computers now capable of performing $20 \times 10^{15}$ floating point operations per second. We also comment on prospects for further developments.

Abstract:This is a brief history of what I consider as very important, some of which truly seminal, contributions made by young Korean nuclear theorists, mostly graduate students working on PhD thesis in 1990's and early 2000's, to nuclear effective field theory, nowadays heralded as the first-principle approach to nuclear physics. The theoretical framework employed is an effective field theory anchored on a scale-invariant hidden local symmetric Lagrangian constructed along the line of Weinberg's "Folk Theorem" on effective field theory. The problems addressed are the high-precision calculations on the thermal $np$ capture, the solar $pp$ fusion process, the solar $hep$ process -- John Bahcall's challenge to nuclear theorists -- and the quenching of $g_A$ in giant Gamow-Teller resonances and the whopping enhancement of first-forbidden beta transitions in astrophysical processes. Extending adventurously the strategy to a wild uncharted domain in which a systematic implementation of the "theorem" is far from obvious, the same effective Lagrangian is applied to the structure of compact stars. A surprising result on the properties of massive stars, totally different from what has been obtained up to day in the literature, is predicted, such as the precocious onset of conformal sound velocity together with the possible emergence of hidden symmetries such as scale symmetry and hidden local symmetry.

Abstract:Nuclear structure theory has recently gone through a major renewal with the development of ab initio techniques that can be applied to a large number of atomic nuclei, well beyond the light sector that had been traditionally targeted in the past. Self-consistent Green's function theory is one among these techniques. The present work aims to give an overview of the self-consistent Green's function approach for atomic nuclei, including examples of recent applications and a discussion on the perspectives for extending the method to nuclear reactions, doubly open-shell systems and heavy nuclei.
