Abstract:We present a computer simulation model that is a one-to-one copy of a quantum eraser experiment with photons (P. D. D. Schwindt et al., Phys. Rev. A 60, 4285 (1999)). The model is solely based on experimental facts, satisfies Einstein's criterion of local causality and does not require knowledge of the solution of a wave equation. Nevertheless, the simulation model reproduces the averages as obtained from the wave mechanical description of the quantum eraser experiment, proving that it is possible to give a particle-only description of quantum eraser experiments with photons. We demonstrate that although the visibility can be used as a measure for the interference, it cannot be used to quantify the wave character of a photon. The classical particle-like simulation model renders the concept of wave-particle duality, used to explain the outcome of the quantum eraser experiment with photons, superfluous.

Abstract:The simulation of quantum cryptography on classical computer was discussed. Methods to express the preparation and measurement of quantum states on current computer and the basic algorithms for simulating the quantum key distribution protocols were given. All the corresponding results of each protocol were presented and compared with the theoretic results. It was shown that the simulation results are completely tallied with theoretic ones.

Abstract:Quantum technology can enable secure communication for cryptography purposes using quantum key distribution. Quantum key distribution protocols provide a secret key between two users with security guaranteed by the laws of quantum mechanics. To define the proper implementation of a quantum key distribution system using a particular cryptography protocol, it is crucial to critically and meticulously assess the device's performance due to technological limitations in the components used. We perform simulations on the ANSYS Interconnect platform to characterise the practical implementation of these devices using distributed-phase-reference protocols differential-phase-shift and coherent-one-way quantum key distribution. Further, we briefly describe and simulate some possible eavesdropping attempts, backflash attack, trojan-horse attack and detector-blinding attack exploiting the device imperfections.

Abstract:We propose to analyse quantum protocols by applying formal verification techniques developed in classical computing for the analysis of communicating concurrent systems. One area of successful application of these techniques is that of classical security protocols, exemplified by Lowe's discovery and fix of a flaw in the well-known Needham-Schroeder authentication protocol. Secure quantum cryptographic protocols are also notoriously difficult to design. Quantum cryptography is therefore an interesting target for formal verification, and provides our first example; we expect the approach to be transferable to more general quantum information processing scenarios. The example we use is the quantum key distribution protocol proposed by Bennett and Brassard, commonly referred to as BB84. We present a model of the protocol in the process calculus CCS and the results of some initial analyses using the Concurrency Workbench of the New Century (CWB-NC).

Abstract:We present a computer simulation model of Wheeler’s delayed choice experiment. The model is solely based on experimental facts and does not rely on concepts of quantum theory or probability theory. We demonstrate that it is possible to give a particle-only description of Wheeler’s delayed choice experiment which reproduces the averages calculated from quantum theory and which does not defy common sense.

Abstract:The nature-inspired field of quantum communication has witnessed exciting developments over the past few years with countries all over the world working hard to scale their experimental quantum networks to larger sizes and increased coverage. Evidently, quantum network simulators are the need of the hour as they provide a framework for tuning hardware parameters, optimizing control protocols, and testing configurations of large and complex quantum networks before their deployment in the real world. In this work, we present ShaNQar (Simulator of Network Quantique): a modular and customizable photonic quantum network simulator. It comprises models of components such as photons, lasers, neutral density filters, sources of entangled photon pairs, communication channels, mirrors, waveplates, beam splitters, single photon detectors, and nodes which incorporate a diverse set of tunable parameters for variability and versatility. It enables adaptive timing control and synchronization with virtually no simulation time resolution limit and features a 'plug and play' design for faster coding and efficient execution. We successfully simulated previous real-life experimental setups for Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and quantum teleportation, thereby, demonstrating the reliability and accuracy of ShaNQar.

The Quantum Cryptography Approach: Unleashing the Potential of Quantum Key Reconciliation Protocol for Secure Communication

Abstract:Quantum cryptography is the study of delivering secret communications across a quantum channel. Recently, Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) has been recognized as the most important breakthrough in quantum cryptography. This process facilitates two distant parties to share secure communications based on physical laws. The BB84 protocol was developed in 1984 and remains the most widely used among BB92, Ekert91, COW, and SARG04 protocols. However the practical security of QKD with imperfect devices have been widely discussed, and there are many ways to guarantee that generated key by QKD still provides unconditional security. This paper proposed a novel method that allows users to communicate while generating the secure keys as well as securing the transmission without any leakage of the data. In this approach sender will never reveal her basis, hence neither the receiver nor the intruder will get knowledge of the fundamental basis.Further to detect Eve, polynomial interpolation is also used as a key verification technique. In order to fully utilize the quantum computing capabilities provided by IBM quantum computers, the protocol is executed using the Qiskit backend for 45 qubits. This article discusses a plot of % error against alpha (strength of eavesdropping). As a result, different types of noise have been included, and the success probability of the desired key bits has been determined. Furthermore, the success probability under depolarizing noise is explained for different qubit counts.Last but not least, even when the applied noise is increased to maximum capacity, a 50% probability of successful key generation is still observed in an experiment.

Shadow Simulation of Quantum Processes

Abstract:We introduce the task of shadow process simulation, where the goal is to simulate the estimation of the expectation values of arbitrary quantum observables at the output of a target physical process. When the sender and receiver share random bits or other no-signaling resources, we show that the performance of shadow process simulation exceeds that of conventional process simulation protocols in a variety of scenarios including communication, noise simulation, and data compression. Remarkably, we find that there exist scenarios where shadow simulation provides increased statistical accuracy without any increase in the number of required samples.

NuQKD: A Modular Quantum Key Distribution Simulation Framework for Engineering Applications

Abstract:An experimental Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) implementation requires advanced costly hardware, unavailable in most research environments, making protocol testing and performance evaluation complicated. Historically, this has been a major motivation for the development of QKD simulation frameworks, to allow researchers to obtain insight before proceeding into practical implementations. Several simulators have been introduced over the recent years. However, only four are publicly available, only one of which models equipment imperfections. Currently, no open-source simulator includes all following capabilities: channel attenuation modelling, equipment imperfections and effect on key rates, estimation of elapsed time during quantum channel processes, use of truly random binary sequences for qubits and measurement bases, shared-bit fraction customization. In this paper, we present NuQKD, an open-source modular, intuitive simulator, featuring all the above capabilities. NuQKD establishes communication between two computer terminals, accepts custom inputs (iterations, raw key size, interception rate etc.) and evaluates the sifted key length, Quantum Bit Error Rate (QBER), elapsed communication time and more). NuQKD capabilities include optical fiber and free-space simulation, modeling of equipment/channel imperfections, bitstrings from True Random Number Generator, modular design and automated evaluation of performance metrics. We expect NuQKD to enable convenient and accurate representation of actual experimental conditions.

Abstract:We developed a modified version of a conventional (BB84) quantum key distribution protocol that can be understood and implemented by students at a pre-university level. We intentionally introduce a subtle but critical simplification to the original protocol, allowing the experiment to be assembled at the skill level appropriate for the students, at the cost of creating a security loophole. The security vulnerability is then exploited by student hackers, allowing the participants to think deeper about the underlying physics that makes the protocol secure in its original form.

Abstract:Quantum communication is an important application that derives from the burgeoning field of quantum information and quantum computation. Focusing on secure communication, quantum cryptography has two major directions of development, namely quantum key distribution and quantum encryption. In this work we propose a quantum encryption protocol that utilizes a quantum algorithm to create blocks of ciphertexts based on quantum states. The main feature of our quantum encryption protocol is that the encryption configuration of each block is determined by the previous blocks, such that additional security is provided. We then demonstrate our method by an example model encrypting the English alphabet, with numerical simulation results showing the large error rate of a mock attack by a potential adversary. With possible future improvements in mind, our quantum encryption protocol is a capable addition to the toolbox of quantum cryptography.
Simulation of quantum algorithms using classical probabilistic bits and circuits

Abstract:We discuss a new approach to simulate quantum algorithms using classical probabilistic bits and circuits. Each qubit (a two-level quantum system) is initially mapped to a vector in an eight dimensional probability space (equivalently, to a classical random variable with eight probabilistic outcomes). The key idea in this mapping is to store both the amplitude and phase information of the complex coefficients that describe the qubit state in the probabilities. Due to the identical tensor product structure of combining multiple quantum systems as well as multiple probability spaces, $n$ qubits are then mapped to a tensor product of $n$ 8-dimensional probabilistic vectors (i.e., the Hilbert space of dimension $2^n$ is mapped to a probability space of dimension $8^n$). After this initial mapping, we show how to implement the analogs of single-qubit and two-qubit gates in the probability space using correlation-inducing operations on these classical random variables. The key defining feature of both the mapping to the probability space and the transformations in this space (i.e., operations on the random variables) is that they are not linear, but instead affine. Using this architecture, the evolution of the $2^n$ complex coefficients of the quantum system can be tracked in the joint fully-correlated probabilities of the polynomial number of random variables. We then give specific procedures for implementing (1) the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm, and (2) the Quantum Fourier Transform in the probability space. Identical to the Quantum case, simulating the Quantum Fourier Transform in the probability space requires $O(n)$ probabilistic bits and $O(n^2)$ (i.e., quadratic in the number of quantum bits) operations.

Abstract:We discuss a discrete-event simulation approach, which has been shown to give a unified cause-and-effect description of many quantum optics and single-neutron interferometry experiments. The event-based simulation algorithm does not require the knowledge of the solution of a wave equation of the whole system, yet reproduces the corresponding statistical distributions by generating detection events one-by-one. It is showm that single-particle interference and entanglement, two important quantum phenomena, emerge via information exchange between individual particles and devices such as beam splitters, polarizers and detectors. We demonstrate this by reproducing the results of several single-neutron interferometry experiments, including one that demonstrates interference and one that demonstrates the violation of a Bell-type inequality. We also present event-based simulation results of a single neutron experiment designed to test the validity of Ozawa's universally valid error-disturbance relation, an uncertainty relation derived using the theory of general quantum measurements.

Security Analysis of Semi-Quantum Cryptography Protocols by Model Checking

Abstract:For cryptography protocols, security is its most core issue, and is the same for quantum cryptography protocols. Researchers can adopt many methods to prove that these protocols are secure, but there exists much difficulty. By using the method of formal verification and the technique of model checking, a fully automated probabilistic model checking tool - PRISM can be used to model these protocols and verify the security properties. Such a methodology can not only avoid the computational complexity of the traditional verification methods based on mathematics, but also improve efficiency and accelerate the verification process. The verification results show that the detection rate of eavesdropping is approximately close to 1 when sufficient photons are transmitted. The semi-quantum cryptography protocols is as secure as the full quantum protocols.
Simulating Noisy Quantum Circuits for Cryptographic Algorithms

Abstract:The emergence of noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers has important consequences for cryptographic algorithms. It is theoretically well-established that key algorithms used in cybersecurity are vulnerable to quantum computers due to the fact that theoretical security guarantees, designed based on algorithmic complexity for classical computers, are not sufficient for quantum circuits. Many different quantum algorithms have been developed, which have potentially broad applications on future computing systems. However, this potential depends on the continued maturation of quantum hardware, which remains an area of active research and development. Theoretical limits provide an upper bound on the performance for algorithms. In practice, threats to encryption can only be accurately be assessed in the context of the rapidly evolving hardware and software landscape. Software co-design refers to the concurrent design of software and hardware as a way to understand the limitations of current capabilities and develop effective strategies to advance the state of the art. Since the capabilities for classical computation currently exceed quantum capabilities, quantum emulation techniques can play an important role in the co-design process. In this paper, we describe how the {\em cuQuantum} environment can support quantum algorithm co-design activities using widely-available commodity hardware. We describe how emulation techniques can be used to assess the impact of noise on algorithms of interest, and identify limitations associated with current hardware. We present our analysis in the context of areas of priority for cybersecurity and cryptography in particular since these algorithms are extraordinarily consequential for securing information in the digital world.

Abstract:A quantum protocol is described which enables a user to send sealed messages and that allows for the detection of active eavesdroppers. We examine a class of eavesdropping strategies, those that make use of quantum operations, and we determine the information gain versus disturbance caused by these strategies. We demonstrate this tradeoff with an example and we compare this protocol to quantum key distribution, quantum direct communication, and quantum seal protocols.
Demonstrating Quantum Homomorphic Encryption Through Simulation

Abstract:Quantum homomorphic encryption (QHE), allows a quantum cloud server to compute on private data as uploaded by a client. We provide a proof-of-concept software simulation for QHE, according to the "EPR" scheme of Broadbent and Jeffery, for universal quantum circuits. We demonstrate the near-term viability of this scheme and provide verification that the additional cost of homomorphic circuit evaluation is minor when compared to the simulation cost of the quantum operations. Our simulation toolkit is an open-source Python implementation, that serves as a step towards further hardware applications of quantum homomorphic encryption between networked quantum devices.

Abstract:Quantum cryptographic systems have been commercially available, with a striking advantage over classical systems that their security and ability to detect the presence of eavesdropping are provable based on the principles of quantum mechanics. On the other hand, quantum protocol designers may commit much more faults than classical protocol designers since human intuition is much better adapted to the classical world than the quantum world. To offer formal techniques for modeling and verification of quantum protocols, several quantum extensions of process algebra have been proposed. One of the most serious issues in quantum process algebra is to discover a quantum generalization of the notion of bisimulation, which lies in a central position in process algebra, preserved by parallel composition in the presence of quantum entanglement, which has no counterpart in classical computation. Quite a few versions of bisimulation have been defined for quantum processes in the literature, but in the best case they are only proved to be preserved by parallel composition of purely quantum processes where no classical communications are involved. Many quantum cryptographic protocols, however, employ the LOCC (Local Operations and Classical Communications) scheme, where classical communications must be explicitly specified. So, a notion of bisimulation preserved by parallel composition in the circumstance of both classical and quantum communications is crucial for process algebra approach to verification of quantum cryptographic protocols. In this paper we introduce a novel notion of bisimulation for quantum processes and prove that it is congruent with respect to various process algebra combinators including parallel composition even when both classical and quantum communications are present. We also establish some basic algebraic laws for this bisimulation. In particular, we prove uniqueness of the solutions to recursive equations of quantum processes, which provides a powerful proof technique for verifying complex quantum protocols.
