Abstract:Inspired by the work of Ou [12,17], we study biharmonic conformal immersions of surfaces into a conformally flat 3-space. We first give a characterization of biharmonic conformal immersions of totally umbilical surfaces into a generic 3-manifold. As an application, we give a method to produce biharmonic conformal immersions into a conformally flat 3-space. We then use the method to obtain a classification of biharmonic maps in a family of conformal immersions and construct many examples of biharmonic conformal immersions from a 2-sphere into a conformal 3-sphere. Our examples include proper biharmonic conformal immersions of a 2-sphere minus a point into a conformal 3-sphere with nonconstant conformal factor and the biharmonic isometric immersion $S^2(\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}})\to S^3$ which was found in [2]. Finally, we study biharmonic conformal immersions of Hopf cylinders of a Riemannian submersion.

Abstract:BCV spaces are a family of 3-dimensional Riemannian manifolds which include six of Thurston's eight geometries. In this paper, we give a complete classification of proper biharmonic Riemannian submersions from a 3-dimensional BCV space by proving that such biharmonic maps exist only in the cases of $H^2\times\mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}^2$ or $\widetilde{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})\to \mathbb{R}^2$. In each of these two cases, we are able to construct a family of infinitely many proper biharmonic Riemannian submersions. Our results on one hand, extend a previous result of the authors which gave a complete classification of proper biharmonic Riemannian submersions from a 3-dimensional space form, and on the other hand, can be viewed as the dual study of biharmonic surfaces (i.e., biharmonic isometric immersions) in a BCV space studied in some recent literature.

Abstract:An isometric immersion $X: \Sigma^n \longrightarrow \mathbb{E}^{n+1}$ is biharmonic if $\Delta^2 X = 0$, i.e. if $\Delta H =0$, where $\Delta$ and $H$ are the metric Laplacian and the mean curvature vector field of $\Sigma^n$ respectively. More generally, biconservative hypersurfaces (BCH) are isometric immersions for which only the tangential part of the biharmonic equation vanishes. We study and construct BCH that are holonomic, i.e. for which the principal curvature directions define an integrable net, and we deduce that $\Sigma^n$ is a holonomic biharmonic hypersurface iff it is minimal.

Calabi-Yau Manifolds with Isolated Conical Singularities

Abstract:Let $X$ be a complex projective variety with only canonical singularities and with trivial canonical bundle. Let $L$ be an ample line bundle on $X$. Assume that the pair $(X,L)$ is the flat limit of a family of smooth polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds. Assume that for each singular point $x \in X$ there exist a Kahler-Einstein Fano manifold $Z$ and a positive integer $q$ dividing $K_Z$ such that $-\frac{1}{q}K_Z$ is very ample and such that the germ $(X,x)$ is locally analytically isomorphic to a neighborhood of the vertex of the blow-down of the zero section of $\frac{1}{q}K_{Z}$. We prove that up to biholomorphism, the unique weak Ricci-flat Kahler metric representing $2\pi c_1(L)$ on $X$ is asymptotic at a polynomial rate near $x$ to the natural Ricci-flat Kahler cone metric on $\frac{1}{q}K_Z$ constructed using the Calabi ansatz. In particular, our result applies if $(X, \mathcal{O}(1))$ is a nodal quintic threefold in $\mathbb{P}^4$. This provides the first known examples of compact Ricci-flat manifolds with non-orbifold isolated conical singularities.
Biharmonic Riemannian Submersions from the Product Space

Abstract:In this paper, we study biharmonic Riemannian submersions from a product manifold onto a surface and obtain some local characterizations of such biharmonic maps. Our results show that when the target surface is flat, a proper biharmonic Riemannian submersion is locally a projection of a special twisted product, and when the target surface is non-flat, is locally a special map between two warped product spaces with a warping function that solves a single ODE. As a by-product, we also prove that there is a unique proper biharmonic Riemannian submersion given by the projection of a warped product onto the Euclidean plane.

Abstract:In this paper, we study biharmonic isometric immersions of a surface into and biharmonic Riemannian submersion from 3-dimensional Berger spheres. We obtain a classification of proper biharmonic isometric immersions of a surface with constant mean curvature into Berger 3-spheres. We also give a complete classification of proper biharmonic Hopf tori in Berger 3-sphere. For Riemannian submersions, we prove that a Riemannian submersion from Berger 3-spheres into a surface is biharmonic if and only if it is harmonic.

Abstract:Biharmonic maps between surfaces are studied in this paper. We compute the bitension field of a map between surfaces with conformal metrics in complex coordinates. As applications, we show that a linear map from Euclidean plane into $(\mathbb{R}^2, \sigma^2dwd\bar w)$ is always biharmonic if the conformal factor $\sigma$ is bi-analytic; we construct a family of such $ \sigma$, and we give a classification of linear biharmonic maps between $2$-spheres. We also study biharmonic maps between surfaces with warped product metrics. This includes a classification of linear biharmonic maps between hyperbolic planes and some constructions of many proper biharmonic maps into a circular cone or a helicoid.

Abstract:f-biharmonic maps are generalizations of harmonic maps and biharmonic maps. In this paper, we give some descriptions of f-biharmonic curves in a space form. We also obtain a complete classification of proper f-biharmonic isometric immersions of a developable surface in R3 by proving that a proper f-biharmonic developable surface exists only in the case where the surface is a cylinder. Based on this, we show that a proper biharmonic conformal immersion of a developable surface into R3 exists only in the case when the surface is a cylinder. Riemannian submersions can be viewed as a dual notion of isometric immersions (i.e., submanifolds). We also study f-biharmonicity of Riemannian submersions from 3-manifolds by using the integrability data. Examples are given of proper f-biharmonic Riemannian submersions and f-biharmonic surfaces and curves.

Abstract:Motivated by the beautiful theory and the rich applications of harmonic conformal immersions and conformal immersions of constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces, we study biharmonic conformal immersions of surfaces into a generic 3-manifold. We first derive an invariant equation for such immersions, we then try to answer the question, "what surfaces can be biharmonically conformally immersed into Euclidean 3-space?" We prove that a circular cylinder is the only CMC surface that can be biharmonically conformally immersed into a Euclidean 3-space; We obtain a classification of biharmonic conformal immersions of complete CMC surfaces into a Euclidean 3-space and a hyperbolic 3-spaces. We also study rotational surfaces that can be biharmonically conformally immersed into a Euclidean 3-space and prove that a circular cone can never such an immersion.

Abstract:We provide examples of foliations on the complex projective plane $\CP^2$ carrying positive foliated harmonic currents whose supports coincide with singular Levi-flats which, in turn, can be chosen real-analytic (but non-algebraic) or merely continuous with fractal transverse nature. Furthermore, non-trivial examples as above can already be found among foliations of degree~$2$ and~$3$. In addition, the space of positive foliated harmonic currents for these foliations is fully characterised and it contains a unique harmonic (non-closed) current supported on the Levi-flat in question. Finally, we also provide examples of foliations carrying diffuse positive foliated closed currents related to a theorem due to Brunella as well as a general criterion for the existence of singular real analytic Levi-flats for Riccati foliations.

$\mathbb Z_2$-Harmonic Spinors and 1-forms on Connected sums and Torus sums of 3-manifolds

Abstract:Given a pair of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-harmonic spinors (resp. 1-forms) on closed Riemannian 3-manifolds $(Y_1, g_1)$ and $(Y_2,g_2)$, we construct $\mathbb{Z}_2$-harmonic spinors (resp. 1-forms) on the connected sum $Y_1 \# Y_2$ and the torus sum $Y_1 \cup_{T^2} Y_2$ using a gluing argument. The main tool in the proof is a parameterized version of the Nash-Moser implicit function theorem established by Donaldson and the second author. We use these results to construct an abundance of new examples of $\mathbb Z_2$-harmonic spinors and 1-forms. In particular, we prove that for every closed 3-manifold $Y$, there exist infinitely many $\mathbb{Z}_2$-harmonic spinors with singular sets representing infinitely many distinct isotopy classes of embedded links, strengthening an existence theorem of Doan-Walpuski. Moreover, combining this with previous results, our construction implies that if $b_1(Y) > 0$, there exist infinitely many $\mathrm{spin}^c$ structures on $Y$ such that the moduli space of solutions to the two-spinor Seiberg-Witten equations is non-empty and non-compact.

Abstract:We study a family of birational maps of smooth affine quadric 3-folds, {over the complex numbers}, of the form $x_1x_4-x_2x_3=$ constant, which seems to have some (among many others) interesting/unexpected characters: a) they are cohomologically hyperbolic, b) their second dynamical degree is an algebraic number but not an algebraic integer, and c) the logarithmic growth of their periodic points is strictly smaller than their algebraic entropy. These maps are restrictions of a polynomial map on $\mathbb{C}^4$ preserving each of the quadrics. The study in this paper is a mixture of rigorous and experimental ones, where for the experimental study we rely on Bertini which is a reliable and fast software for expensive numerical calculations in complex algebraic geometry.

Abstract:Let Mn be a compact hypersurface with constant mean curvature H in Sn+1. Denote by S the squared norm of the second fundamental form of M. We prove that there exists an explicit positive constant γ(n) depending only on n such that if |H|≤γ(n) and β(n,H)≤S≤β(n,H)+n23, then S≡β(n,H) and M is one of the following cases: (i) Sk(kn)×Sn−k(n−kn), 1≤k≤n−1; (ii) S1(11+μ2)×Sn−1(μ1+μ2). Here β(n,H)=n+n32(n−1)H2+n(n−2)2(n−1)n2H4+4(n−1)H2 and μ=n|H|+n2H2+4(n−1)2. For n∈{6,12,24}, we give examples to show that the assumption |H|≤γ(n) cannot be removed.

Examples of topologically unknotted tori

Abstract:We show that certain smooth tori with group $\mathbb{Z}$ in $S^4$ have exteriors with standard equivariant intersection forms, and so are topologically unknotted. These include the turned 1-twist-spun tori in the 4-sphere constructed by Boyle, the union of the genus one Seifert surface of Cochran and Davis that has no slice derivative with a ribbon disc, and tori with precisely four critical points whose middle level set is a 2-component link with vanishing Alexander polynomial. This gives evidence towards the conjecture that all $\mathbb{Z}$-surfaces in $S^4$ are topologically unknotted, which is open for genus one and two. It is unclear whether these tori are smoothly unknotted, except for tori with four critical points whose middle level set is a split link. The double cover of $S^4$ branched along any of these surfaces is a potentially exotic copy of $S^2 \times S^2$, and, in the case of turned twisted tori, we show they cannot be distinguished from $S^2 \times S^2$ using Seiberg-Witten invariants.

Gauss--Bonnet for CSM classes of very affine manifolds, and tropical isotopies

Abstract:The CSM class of a very affine manifold $U$ is represented by the rank drop locus of a general tuple of torus invariant 1-forms on it. This equality holds in the homology of any toric compactification $X\supset U$. It was proved for schön $U$ by Huh, and later for all $U$ in the homology of $X=CP^n$ by Maxim--Rodriguez--Wang--Wu, using Ginsburg's interpretation of CSM classes as Lagrangian cycles. We deduce this identity in full generality from properties of affine characteristic classes, give an explicit sufficient condition of general position for the 1-forms, and use it to extend the identity to non-torus invariant 1-forms. Along the way, we characterize very affine varieties of ML degree 0, and give a useful criterion for a family of varieties to have a constant tropical fan (``tropical isotopy theorem''). Our main idea is a technique to study very affine varieties without compactifying them. As a result we do not have to deal with singularities occuring at the boundary of the compactification, which would require less constructive methods (such as resolution of singularities). This is what enables us to give constructive genericity conditions in this Gauss--Bonnet theorem.

Construction of $r$-harmonic submanifolds

Abstract:We provide a construction method for biharmonic submanifolds in cohomogeneity one manifolds. In particular, we give new examples of biharmonic submanifolds and study the normal index of these submanifolds. We use this strategy to construct metrics on the sphere admitting biharmonic non-minimal hypersurfaces with three distinct principal curvatures. Finally, we perform a similar study of $r$-harmonic submanifolds of cohomogeneity one manifolds.

Abstract:We show that surfaces such that the natural projections of the unit normal bundles are harmonic morphisms are composed of minimal points and totally umbilical points. As its application, we find a harmonic map from the torus to the complex quadric in CP3 such that the projection map of the associated sphere bundle constructed by Gudmundsson is not a harmonic morphism. This contrasts sharply with the situation for holomorphic maps. We also establish sufficient conditions for reducing the codimension of an isometric immersion with conformal second fundamental form.
