Abstract:We present updated measurements of the branching fractions and CP asymmetries for B0 -> pi0 pi0, B+ -> pi+ pi0, and B+ -> K+ pi0. Based on a sample of 383 x 10^6 Upsilon(4S) -> B Bbar decays collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at SLAC, we measure B(B0 -> pi0 pi0) =(1.47 +/- 0.25 +/- 0.12) x 10^-6, B(B+ -> pi+ pi0)= (5.02 +/- 0.46 +/- 0.29) x 10^-6, and B(B+ -> K+ pi0) = (13.6 +/- 0.6 +/- 0.7) x 10^-6. We also measure the CP asymmetries C(pi0 pi0) = -0.49 +/- 0.35 +/- 0.05, A(pi+ pi0) = 0.03 +/- 0.08 +/- 0.01, and A(K+ pi0) = 0.030 +/- 0.039 +/- 0.010. Finally, we present bounds on the CKM angle $\alpha$ using isospin relations.

BABAR status and prospects for CP asymmetry measurements: sin(2beta+gamma)

Abstract:The recent experimental results on CP violation related to the angles of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) unitarity triangle 2beta+gamma are summarized in these proceedings. These results are obtained with approximately 232 million Y4S->BBbar events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B-factory at SLAC. Using the measurements on time-dependent CP asymmetries in B0->D(*)-+pi+- and B0->D-+rho+- decays and theoretical assumptions, one finds |sin(2beta+gamma)|>0.64 (0.40) at 68% (90%) confidence level. The perspectives of sin(2beta+gamma) measurement with B0bar-> D(*)0bar K(*)0 and B0->D(*)-+ a_0(2)+- decay channels are also discussed.

A Didactic Approach to Linear Waves in the Ocean

Abstract:The general equations of motion for ocean dynamics are presented and the waves supported by the (inviscid, unforced) linearized system with respect to a state of rest are derived. The linearized dynamics sustains one zero frequency mode (called buoyancy mode) in which salinity and temperature rearrange in such a way that seawater density does not change. Five nonzero frequency modes (two acoustic modes, two inertia--gravity or Poincaré modes, and one planetary or Rossby mode) are also sustained by the linearized dynamics, which satisfy an asymptotic general dispersion relation. The most usual approximations made in physical oceanography (namely incompressibility, Boussinesq, hydrostatic, and quasigeostrophic) are also consider, and their implications in the reduction of degrees of freedom (number of independent dynamical fields or prognostic equations) of, and compatible waves with, the linearized governing equations are particularly discussed and emphasized.

Abstract:We present a study of the decay B- -> D0_CP K- and its charge conjugate, where D0_CP is reconstructed in both a non-CP flavor eigenstate and in CP (CP-even and CP-odd) eigenstates, based on a sample of 382 million Y(4S) -> BBbar decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e- storage ring. We measure the direct CP asymmetries A_CP\pm and the ratios of the branching fractions R_CP\pm: A_CP+ = 0.27\pm 0.09(stat)\pm 0.04(syst), A_CP- =-0.09\pm 0.09(stat)\pm 0.02(syst), R_CP+ = 1.06\pm 0.10(stat)\pm 0.05(syst), R_CP- = 1.03\pm 0.10(stat)\pm 0.05(syst). We also express the results in terms of the so called Cartesian coordinates x+, x-, and r^2: x+ = -0.09\pm 0.05(stat)\pm 0.02(syst)}, x- = 0.10\pm 0.05(stat)\pm 0.03(syst)}, r^2 = 0.05\pm 0.07(stat)\pm 0.03(syst)}. These results will help to better constrain the phase parameter $\gamma=\arg(-V_{ud}V_{ub}^*/V_{cd}V_{cb}^*)$ of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix.

Measurements of time-dependent CP asymmetries in B0 --> D(*)+D(*)- decays

Abstract:We present new measurements of time-dependent CP asymmetries for B0 --> D(*)+D(*)- decays using (467 +/- 5) X 10^6 BB pairs collected with the BaBar detector located at the PEP-II B Factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. We determine the CP-odd fraction of the B0 --> D*+D*- decays to be R_perp = 0.158 +/- 0.028 +/- 0.006 and find CP asymmetry parameters for the CP-even component of the decay S_+ = -0.76 +/- 0.16 +/- 0.04 and C_+ = 0.00 +/- 0.12 +/- 0.02. We measure S = -0.63 +/- 0.36 +/- 0.05 and C = -0.07 +/- 0.23 +/- 0.03 for B0 --> D+D-, S = -0.62 +/- 0.21 +/- 0.03 and C = 0.08 +/- 0.17 +/- 0.04 for B0 --> D*+D-$, and S = -0.73 +/- 0.23 +/- 0.05 and C = 0.00 +/- 0.17 +/- 0.03 for B0 --> D+D*-. For the B0 --> D*+/-D-/+ decays, we also determine the CP-violating asymmetry A = 0.008 +/- 0.048 +/- 0.013. In each case, the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The measured values for the asymmetries are all consistent with the Standard Model.

Search for Bbar --> Lambda_c+ X l- nu Decays in Events With a Fully Reconstructed B Meson

Abstract:We present a search for semileptonic B decays to the charmed baryon Lambda_c+ based on 420 fb-1 of data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II $e^+e^-$ storage rings. By fully reconstructing the recoiling B in a hadronic decay mode, we reduce non-B backgrounds and determine the flavor of the signal B. We statistically correct the flavor for the effect of the B0 mixing. We obtain a 90% confidence level upper limit of BF(Bbar --> Lambda_c+ X l- nubar)/BF(Bbar --> Lambda_c+ X) < 3.5 %.

Abstract:A measurement of the $CP$-violating observables from $B^{\pm}\rightarrow D^* K^{\pm}$ and $B^{\pm}\rightarrow D^* \pi^{\pm}$ decays is presented, where $D^* (D) $ is an admixture of $D^{*0}$ and $\bar{D}^{*0}$ ($D^0$ and $\bar{D}^0$) states and is reconstructed through the decay chains $ D^* \rightarrow D\pi^0/\gamma$ and $D \to K_S^0 \pi^+\pi^-/K_S^0 K^+K^-$. The measurement is performed by analysing the signal yield variation across the $D$ decay phase space and is independent of any amplitude model. The data sample used was collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions and corresponds to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$ at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The CKM angle $\gamma$ is determined to be $(69^{+13}_{-14})^{\circ}$ using the measured $CP$-violating observables. The hadronic parameters $r^{D^* K^{\pm}}_B, r^{D^* \pi^{\pm}}_B, \delta^{D^* K^{\pm}}_B, \delta^{D^* \pi^{\pm}}_B$, which are the ratios and strong phase differences between favoured and suppressed $B^{\pm}$ decays, are also reported.

Observation of B-meson decays to b_1 pi and b_1 K

Abstract:We present the results of searches for decays of B mesons to final states with a b_1 meson and a charged pion or kaon. The data, collected with the BaBar detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, represent 382 million B-Bbar pairs produced in e+e- annihilation. The results for the branching fractions are, in units of 10^{-6}, B(B+ -> b1^0 pi+) = 6.7 +/- 1.7 +/- 1.0 (4.0 sigma), B(B+ -> b1^0 K+ = 9.1+/- 1.7+/- 1.0 (5.3 sigma), B(B0 -> b1^-/+ pi^+/-) = 10.9 +/- 1.2 +/- 0.9 (8.9 sigma), and B(B0 -> b1^-K+) = 7.4 +/- 1.0 +/- 1.0 (6.1 sigma), with the assumption that B(b_1 -> omega pi)=1. We also measure charge and flavor asymmetries Ach(B+ -> b1^0 pi+) = 0.05 +/- 0.16 +/- 0.02, Ach(B+ -> b1^0 K+ = -0.46 +/- 0.20 +/- 0.02, Ach(B0 -> b1^-/+ pi^+/-) = -0.05 +/- 0.10 +/- 0.02, C(B0 -> b1^-/+ pi^+/-) = -0.22 +/- 0.23 +/- 0.05, deltaC(B0 -> b1^-/+ pi^+/-) = -1.04 +/- 0.23 +/- 0.08, and Ach(B0 -> b1^-K+) = -0.07 +/- 0.12 +/- 0.02, The first error quoted is statistical, the second systematic, and for the branching fractions, the significance is given in parentheses.

Measurements of Neutral B Decay Branching Fractions to K0S pi+ pi- Final States and the Charge Asymmetry of B0 --> K*+ pi-

Abstract:We analyze the decay B0 -> K0s pi+ pi- using a sample of 232 million Upsilon(4S) -> BB decays collected with the BaBar detector at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory. A maximum likelihood fit finds the following branching fractions: BF(B0 -> K0 pi+ pi-) = (43.0 +/- 2.3 +/- 2.3) x 10^{-6}, BF(B0 -> f0 (-> pi+ pi-) K0) = (5.5 +/- 0.7 +/- 0.5 +/- 0.3) x 10^{-6} and BF(B0 -> K*+ pi-) = (11.0 +/- 1.5 +/- 0.5 +/- 0.5) x 10^{-6}. For these results, the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third (if present) is due to the effect of interference from other resonances. We also measure the CP-violating charge asymmetry in the decay B0 -> K*+ pi-, A(B0 -> K*+ pi-) = -0.11 +/- 0.14 +/- 0.05.

Abstract:Measurements of $CP$ observables and the CKM angle $\gamma$ are performed in $B^{\pm} \to D K^*(892)^{\pm}$ decays, where $D$ represents a superposition of $D^0$ and $\overline{D}{}^0$ states, using the LHCb dataset collected during Run 1 (2011-2012) and Run 2 (2015-2018). A comprehensive study of this channel is presented with the $D$ meson reconstructed in two-body final states $K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}$, $K^+K^-$ and $\pi^+\pi^-$; four-body final states $K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}\pi^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}$ and $\pi^+\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-$; and three-body final states $K^0_{S} \pi^+\pi^-$ and $K^0_{S} K^+ K^-$. This analysis includes the first observation of the suppressed $B^{\pm} \to [\pi^+K^-]_D K^{*\pm}$ and $B^{\pm} \to [\pi^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-]_D K^{*\pm}$ decays. The combined result gives $\gamma=(63\pm 13)^\circ$.

Searches for Charmless Decays B0 -> eta omega, B0 -> eta K0, B+ -> eta rho+, and B+ -> eta' pi+

Abstract:We present measurements of branching fractions for four previously unobserved B-meson decays with an eta or eta' meson in the final state. The data sample corresponds to 182 million B-Bbar pairs produced from e+e- annihilation at the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We measure the following branching fractions in units of 10^-6: BF(B0 -> eta omega) = 1.2 +/- 0.6 +/- 0.2 (<2.3 at 90% C.L.), BF(B0 -> eta K0) = 2.5 +/-0.8 +/- 0.1, BF(B+ -> eta rho+) = 8.6 +/- 2.2 +/- 1.1, and BF(B+ -> eta' pi+) = 4.2 +/- 1.0 +/- 0.5, where the first error quoted is statistical and the second systematic. The charge asymmetries are A_ch(B+ -> eta rho+) = (7 +/- 19 +/- 2)% and A_ch(B+ -> eta' pi+) = (24 +/- 19 +/- 1)%. All results are preliminary.

Nonequilibrium Green's function theory for transport and gain properties of quantum cascade structures

Abstract:The transport and gain properties of quantum cascade (QC) structures are investigated using a nonequilibrium Green's function (NGF) theory which includes quantum effects beyond a Boltzmann transport description. In the NGF theory, we include interface roughness, impurity, and electron-phonon scattering processes within a self-consistent Born approximation, and electron-electron scattering in a mean-field approximation. With this theory we obtain a description of the nonequilibrium stationary state of QC structures under an applied bias, and hence we determine transport properties, such as the current-voltage characteristic of these structures. We define two contributions to the current, one contribution driven by the scattering-free part of the Hamiltonian, and the other driven by the scattering Hamiltonian. We find that the dominant part of the current in these structures, in contrast to simple superlattice structures, is governed mainly by the scattering Hamiltonian. In addition, by considering the linear response of the stationary state of the structure to an applied optical field, we determine the linear susceptibility, and hence the gain or absorption spectra of the structure. A comparison of the spectra obtained from the more rigorous NGF theory with simpler models shows that the spectra tend to be offset to higher values in the simpler theories.

CKM Physics from B Decays using the CLEO Experiment

Abstract:We report on studies of three types of B-meson decay that can contribute to an understanding of fundamental intergenerational quark mixing, charge-conjugation--parity violation, and long-distance quantum chromodynamics. Specifically, we discuss a selection of analyses related to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) parameters Vcb, Vub, alpha, and gamma, and the nonperturbative heavy quark effective theory quantities lambda_1 and lambda_bar. We first describe an examination of the first and second moments of the hadronic-recoil mass and charged-lepton energy spectra in inclusive b -> c l nu decays. We also report on the reconstruction, using similar experimental techniques, of the CKM-suppressed decay B -> rho l nu and the extraction of its branching fraction, Br(B0 -> rho- l+ nu) = (2.57 +- 0.29 +0.33/-0.46 +- 0.41) x 10E-4, as well as the value |Vub| = (3.25 +- 0.14 +0.21/-0.29 +- 0.55) x 10E-3, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to model dependence, respectively. Finally, we present results on rare two-body charmless hadronic B -> K pi, pi pi, and K K decays and comment briefly on their implications to the geometry of the CKM unitarity triangle, including a bound on gamma.

B Decays into a Scalar/tensor Meson in Pursuit of Determining the CKM Angle Γ

Abstract:In this work, I suggest a new way for determining the CKM angle gamma via B decays into a scalar/tensor meson without any hadronic uncertainty. The proposed idea makes profits of the two triangles formed by the B+ -> (D-0, (D) over bar (0), D-CP(0))K-0(2)(*+/-) (1430) decay amplitudes. The advantages in it are large CP asymmetries and the avoidance of the use of doubly Cabibbo-suppressed D decays. Branching ratios of B-+/- -> (D-0, (D) over bar (0), D-CP(0))K-0(2)(*+/-) (1430) are estimated to have the order 10(-6) - 10(-5) and therefore measurable on the ongoing LHCb experiment and future experimental facilities. The usefulness of other related channels, for instance the neutral B-d decays into DK0(2)*(1430) and B-s -> (D-0, (D) over bar (0))M (M = f(0)(980), f(0)(1370), f(2)'(1525), f(1)(1285), f(1)(1420), h(1)(1180)), the B -> D(+)a(0,2)(+/-) for the extraction of gamma + 2 beta and the B-s -> (DK0,2*+/-)-K--/+ to access gamma + 2 beta(s), is also discussed in brevity.
Measurements of $\boldsymbol{B\rightarrow Kπ}$ and $\boldsymbol{B\rightarrow ππ}$ Branching Fractions and $\boldsymbol{\mathcal{A}_{CP}}$ Asymmetries at Belle II

Abstract:Analyses of $B$ meson decays to charmless hadronic final states are an important part of the Belle II program. They are sensitive to effects from non-standard model physics and provide experimentally precise constraints on the weak interactions of quarks. We present recent Belle II results on branching fractions and direct $CP$-violating asymmetries of the decays $B^0 \rightarrow K^+\pi^-$, $B^+ \rightarrow K^+\pi^0$, $B^+ \rightarrow K^0\pi^+$, and $B^0 \rightarrow K^0\pi^0$, and use these to test the standard model through an isospin-based sum rule. In addition, we measure the branching fraction and direct $CP$ asymmetry of the decay $B^+ \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^0$ and the branching fraction of the decay $B^0 \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-$, which contribute towards the determination of the CKM angle $\phi_2$. The data are collected with the Belle II detector from the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider, consisting of $387 \times 10^6$ $\Upsilon(4S)\rightarrow B\bar{B}$ events. We obtain $-0.03 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.04$ for the sum rule, in agreement with the standard model expectation of zero and with a precision comparable to the best existing determinations.

Abstract:We present preliminary measurements of branching fractions for the semileptonic decays B --> D tau nubar and B --> D* tau nubar, which are potentially sensitive to non--Standard Model amplitudes. The data sample comprises 232x10^6 Upsilon(4S) --> BBbar decays collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II e+e- storage ring. We obtain B(B- --> D0 tau nubar) = (0.63 +/- 0.38 +/- 0.10 +/- 0.06)%, B(B- --> D*0 tau nubar) = (2.35 +/- 0.49 +/- 0.22 +/- 0.18)%, B(B0bar --> D+ tau nubar) = (1.03 +/- 0.35 +/- 0.14 +/- 0.10)%, and B(B0bar --> D*+ tau nubar) = (1.15 +/- 0.33 +/- 0.04 +/- 0.04)%, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and normalization, respectively. By combining B- and B0bar results, we also obtain the branching fractions B(B --> D tau nubar) = (0.90 +/- 0.26 +/- 0.11 +/- 0.06)% and B(B --> D* tau nubar) = (1.81 +/- 0.33 +/- 0.11 +/- 0.06)% (quoted for the B- lifetime), with significances of 3.5 sigma and 6.2 sigma.

Abstract:We present measurements of the branching fractions for the three-body decays B0 -> D(*)-/+ K0 pi^+/-$ and their resonant submodes $B0 -> D(*)-/+ K*+/- using a sample of approximately 88 million BBbar pairs collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric energy storage ring. We measure: B(B0->D-/+ K0 pi+/-)=(4.9 +/- 0.7(stat) +/- 0.5 (syst)) 10^{-4} B(B0->D*-/+ K0 pi+/-)=(3.0 +/- 0.7(stat) +/- 0.3 (syst)) 10^{-4} B(B0->D-/+ K*+/-)=(4.6 +/- 0.6(stat) +/- 0.5 (syst)) 10^{-4} B(B0->D*-/+ K*+/-)=(3.2 +/- 0.6(stat) +/- 0.3 (syst)) 10^{-4} From these measurements we determine the fractions of resonant events to be : f(B0-> D-/+ K*+/-) = 0.63 +/- 0.08(stat) +/- 0.04(syst) f(B0-> D*-/+ K*+/-) = 0.72 +/- 0.14(stat) +/- 0.05(syst)

Abstract:We reanalyze the decay $B_d\to\pi^+\pi^-$ without assuming dominance of QCD penguins with internal top-quark exchanges. In that case the weak phase of the $\bar b \to\bar d$ QCD penguin amplitude is not related in a simple way to the CKM angle $\beta$. Nevertheless it is still possible to extract the CKM angle $\alpha$ in a transparent and almost model-independent way from the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry of the transition $B_d\to\pi^+\pi^-$. Aside from that CP asymmetry this approach needs as an input only amplitudes of decays with branching ratios of order $10^{-5}$ and will thus be well within reach at future $B$-factories.
