Abstract:The transport and gain properties of quantum cascade (QC) structures are investigated using a nonequilibrium Green's function (NGF) theory which includes quantum effects beyond a Boltzmann transport description. In the NGF theory, we include interface roughness, impurity, and electron-phonon scattering processes within a self-consistent Born approximation, and electron-electron scattering in a mean-field approximation. With this theory we obtain a description of the nonequilibrium stationary state of QC structures under an applied bias, and hence we determine transport properties, such as the current-voltage characteristic of these structures. We define two contributions to the current, one contribution driven by the scattering-free part of the Hamiltonian, and the other driven by the scattering Hamiltonian. We find that the dominant part of the current in these structures, in contrast to simple superlattice structures, is governed mainly by the scattering Hamiltonian. In addition, by considering the linear response of the stationary state of the structure to an applied optical field, we determine the linear susceptibility, and hence the gain or absorption spectra of the structure. A comparison of the spectra obtained from the more rigorous NGF theory with simpler models shows that the spectra tend to be offset to higher values in the simpler theories.

Time-dependent $CP$ violation results at Belle II

Abstract:We report updates on time-dependent $CP$-violation observables at Belle II. The benchmark measurements of the $B^0$ lifetime $\tau_{B^0}$ and mixing frequency $\Delta m_d$ using flavor specific hadronic decays and the determination of the $CP$-violating phase $\sin2\phi_1$ in $b\to c\overline{c}s$ transitions have been performed using data collected between 2019-2021. These analyses use only half of the current available dataset and are still statistically limited, showing the excellent performance of the detector and readiness of the analysis tools. We present three new results on the effective value of $\sin2\phi_1$ in $b\to q\overline{q}s$ transitions, which are highly sensitive to generic non-Standard Model (SM) physics amplitudes, using the full dataset collected between 2019-2022.

CKM and CPV measurements in the beauty and charm sector

Abstract:Measurements of CKM elements and $CP$-violating observables are sensitive to revealing effects beyond the SM. These proceedings discuss four recent LHCb results. The first one presents $CP$ violation measurements in $B^0_s$ decays. Tree-level measurements of the CKM angle $\gamma$ are one of the most important tests of $CP$ violation in the SM. Additionally, the second one presents the results of a recent analysis of $B^{\pm} \rightarrow [h'^+h'^-\pi^+\pi^-]_Dh^{\pm}$ ($h=K,\pi$). The third one discusses the combination of previous LHCb $\gamma$ measurements except for the presented results. Achieved precision of the LHCb result: $(67 \pm 4)^{\circ}$ dominates the world average. Charm physics serves as a unique probe to test the flavor sector in the SM. The fourth one shows the search for $CP$ violation in the multi-body $D$ decays.

Abstract:We report results from a study of $B^\pm \rightarrow DK^\pm$ decays followed by $D$ decaying to $CP$~eigenstates, where $D$ indicates a $D^0$ or $\bar{D}^{0}$ meson. These decays are sensitive to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity-triangle angle $\phi_{3}$. The results are based on a combined analysis of the final data set of $772 \times 10^6~B\bar{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and a data set of $198 \times 10^6~B\bar{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle~II experiment, both in electron-positron collisions at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. We measure the $CP$ asymmetries to be $\mathcal{ A}_{CP +} =~(+12.5 \pm 5.8 \pm 1.4)\% $ and $\mathcal{ A}_{CP -} =~(-16.7 \pm 5.7 \pm 0.6)\%$, and the ratios of branching fractions to be $\mathcal{ R}_{CP+}=~1.164 \pm 0.081 \pm 0.036 $ and $\mathcal{ R}_{CP-} =~1.151 \pm 0.074 \pm 0.019$. The first contribution to the uncertainties is statistical, and the second is systematic. The asymmetries $\mathcal{A}_{CP +}$ and $\mathcal{A}_{CP -}$ have similar magnitudes and opposite signs; their difference corresponds to 3.5~standard deviations. From these values we calculate 68.3\% confidence intervals of ($8.5^{\circ}<\phi_{3}<16.5^{\circ}$) or ($84.5^{\circ}<\phi_{3}<95.5^{\circ}$) or ($163.3^{\circ}<\phi_{3}<171.5^{\circ}$) and $0.321<r_{B}<0.465$.

Abstract:We describe a measurement of charge-parity ($CP$) violation asymmetries in $B^0\to\eta'K^0_S$ decays using Belle II data. We consider $\eta'\to\eta(\to\gamma\gamma)\pi^+\pi^-$ and $\eta'\to\rho(\to\pi^+\pi^-)\gamma$ decays. The data were collected at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider between the years 2019 and 2022, and contain $(387\pm 6) \times 10^6$ bottom-antibottom meson pairs. We reconstruct $829\pm35$ signal decays and extract the $CP$ violating parameters from a fit to the distribution of the proper-decay-time difference between the two $B$ mesons. The measured direct and mixing-induced $CP$ asymmetries are $\text{C}_{\eta'K^0_S} = -0.19 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.03 $ and $\text{S}_{\eta'K^0_S} = +0.67 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.04 $, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are in agreement with current world averages and standard model predictions.

Measurements of $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$ from Belle and Belle II

Abstract:This proceeding summarizes recent measurements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$ at the Belle and Belle~II experiments. It provides insights derived from both exclusive and inclusive determinations. Preliminary results from Belle~II are discussed, focusing on $B^0\to D^{*-}\ell^+ \nu$ and $B^{0} \to \pi^{-} \ell^{+} \nu$ utilizing $189 \, \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ data collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. This reveals the derived branching fractions and $|V_{xb}|$. The shape measurement of $B \to D^{*} \ell \nu$ at Belle extracted $|V_{cb}|$ employing new lattice-QCD calculations as input and provided additional tests on the universality of light lepton flavors. In the realm of inclusive decay, the measurement for $|V_{ub}|$ and the differential spectra of $B \to X_{u} \ell \nu$ decays have been performed. This presentation also encapsulates the new analyses of $|V_{ub}|^{\mathrm{excl}}/|V_{ub}|^{\mathrm{incl}}$ and $|V_{ub}|^{\mathrm{incl}}/|V_{cb}|^{\mathrm{incl}}$ ratios.

Abstract:In the early 80's Sanda-san and collaborators wrote key papers on the direct and clean determination of the unitarity angle $\phi_1$ ($\beta$). This motivated many of us for analogously coming up with ways for direct and clean determinations of the other two unitarity angles, $\phi_2 (\alpha)$ and $\phi_3 (\gamma)$. Current status of these direct determinations as well as our expectations for when Belle-II has 50 $ab^{-1}$ of luminosity and LHCb with some upgrades, will be given. In particular, it is emphasized that for direct determination of $\phi_3$, Belle-II should be able to handle final states in $D^0$ or $\bar D^0$ Dalitz decays, that contain one $\pi^0$ (which are difficult for LHCb) then they may make further inroads in improving the accuracy of $\phi_3$ determination. Early lattice inputs for constraining the unitarity triangle (UT) are briefly recalled. Its crucial role in supporting the Kobayashi-Maskawa theory of CP violation is emphasized. Over the years lattice methods have made significant progress and latest constraints from these for the UT will be discussed as well as compatibility with current direct determinations and some comments on future outlook will be made.

Measurements of $\boldsymbol{B\rightarrow Kπ}$ and $\boldsymbol{B\rightarrow ππ}$ Branching Fractions and $\boldsymbol{\mathcal{A}_{CP}}$ Asymmetries at Belle II

Abstract:Analyses of $B$ meson decays to charmless hadronic final states are an important part of the Belle II program. They are sensitive to effects from non-standard model physics and provide experimentally precise constraints on the weak interactions of quarks. We present recent Belle II results on branching fractions and direct $CP$-violating asymmetries of the decays $B^0 \rightarrow K^+\pi^-$, $B^+ \rightarrow K^+\pi^0$, $B^+ \rightarrow K^0\pi^+$, and $B^0 \rightarrow K^0\pi^0$, and use these to test the standard model through an isospin-based sum rule. In addition, we measure the branching fraction and direct $CP$ asymmetry of the decay $B^+ \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^0$ and the branching fraction of the decay $B^0 \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-$, which contribute towards the determination of the CKM angle $\phi_2$. The data are collected with the Belle II detector from the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider, consisting of $387 \times 10^6$ $\Upsilon(4S)\rightarrow B\bar{B}$ events. We obtain $-0.03 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.04$ for the sum rule, in agreement with the standard model expectation of zero and with a precision comparable to the best existing determinations.

New results on $|V_{ub}|$ using inclusive and exclusive $B$ decays from the Belle experiment

Abstract:We present two recent measurements of semileptonic B decays at Belle, offering valuable insights into the determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element $|V_{ub}|$. These analyses use the full Belle dataset, comprising $772 \times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. With an innovative strategy, the inclusive $B \to X_u \ell \nu$ and exclusive $B \to \pi \ell \nu$ decays are simultaneously analyzed for the first time, and the $|V_{ub}|$ ratio is extracted as $|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{excl.}}|/|V_{ub}^{\mathrm {incl.}}|=0.97 \pm 0.12$. Furthermore, we provide preliminary results for the inclusive branching fractions ratio of $B \to X_u \ell \nu$ and $B \to X_c \ell \nu$ decays, accompanied by additional interpretations aimed at deriving the inclusive $|V_{ub}|/|V_{cb}|$ ratio.

Abstract:We measure the branching fraction for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay $D^0\rightarrow K^0_S\,K^0_S\,\pi^+\pi^-$ and search for $CP$ violation via a measurement of the $CP$ asymmetry $A_{\rm CP}$ as well as the $T$-odd triple-product asymmetry $a^T_{\rm CP}$. We use 922 fb$^{-1}$ of data recorded by the Belle experiment, which ran at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The branching fraction is measured relative to the Cabibbo-favored normalization channel $D^0\rightarrow K^0_S\,\pi^+\pi^-$; the result is $\mathcal{B}(D^0\rightarrow K^0_S\,K^0_S\,\pi^+\pi^-) = [4.79 \pm 0.08\,({\rm stat}) \pm 0.10\,({\rm syst}) \pm 0.31\,({\rm norm})]\times 10^{-4}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is from uncertainty in the normalization channel. We also measure $A_{\rm CP} = [-2.51\,\pm 1.44\,({\rm stat})\,^{+0.11}_{-0.10}\,({\rm syst})]\%$, and $a^T_{\rm CP} = [-1.95\,\pm 1.42\,({\rm stat})\,^{+0.14}_{-0.12}\,({\rm syst})]\%$. These results show no evidence of CP violation.

CKM and $C\!P$ violation in beauty and charm decays in LHCb

Abstract:Measurements of $C\!P$ violation and Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix in beauty and charm hadron decays are the core business of the LHCb physics programme. In this contribution, the most recent measurements performed by the LHCb collaboration on this topic are reported. The most precise measurement of time-dependent $C\!P$ asymmetry parameters in $B_s^0 \to \phi \phi$ decays has been done, providing results fully compatible with Standard Model expectations. The polarisation-dependent $C\!P$-violation parameters of the same decay are measured for the first time. The combination of beauty and charm results gives $\gamma = \left( 63.8^{+3.5}_{-3.7} \right)^\circ$. The first search for local $C\!P$ violation in $D_{(s)}^+ \to K^- K^+ K^+$ has been performed, resulting in no local $C\!P$ violation observed. The measurement of time-integrated $C\!P$ violation in $D^0 \to K^- K^+$ decays, combined with previous measurements performed by LHCb, provides evidence of direct $C\!P$ violation in charm in a single decay channel at the level of $3.8$ standard deviations.

Abstract:We present a measurement of time-dependent rate asymmetries in $B^0\to \phi K^0_S$ decays to search for non-standard-model physics in $b\to q \overline{q}s$ transitions. The data sample is collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider in 2019-2022 and contains $(387\pm 6)\times 10^6$ bottom-antibottom mesons from $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance decays. We reconstruct $162\pm17$ signal events and extract the charge-parity ($CP$) violating parameters from a fit to the distribution of the proper-decay-time difference of the two $B$ mesons. The measured direct and mixing-induced $CP$ asymmetries are $A=0.31\pm0.20\pm0.05$ and $S=0.54\pm0.26^{+0.06}_{-0.08}$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The results are compatible with the $CP$ asymmetries observed in $b\to c\overline{c} s$ transitions.

Abstract:We study CP violation in b-baryon decays of Ξb−→Ξ−D with D=D0,D ̄0 and Di(i=1,2). We find that these baryonic decay processes provide an ideal opportunity to measure the weak phase due to the absence of the relative strong phase. Explicitly, we relate ρ ̄ and η ̄ the CKM elements with the decay rate ratios of Ri=Γ(Ξb−→Ξ−Di)/Γ(Ξb−→Ξ−D0) without the charge conjugate states. As a complementary, we also examine the decay distributions of Λb→Λ(→pπ−)D. There are in total 32 decay observables, which can be parameterized by 9 real parameters, allowing the experiments to extract the angle γ≡arg⁡(−VudVub⁎/VcdVcb⁎) in the CKM unitarity triangle. In addition, the feasibilities of the experimental measurements are discussed. We find that ρ ̄ and η ̄ can be extracted at LHCb Run3 from Ξb−→Ξ−D, and a full analysis of Λb→Λ(→pπ−)D is available at LHCb Run4.

CP Violation in $B \to K\ell^+\ell^-$ Decays: New Opportunities in the High-Precision Era

Abstract:Experimental data on rare $B$-meson decays indicate deviations from Standard Model predictions. In studies of these decays, possible new sources of CP violation are often neglected. We discuss CP violation in the rare $B$-meson decays $B\to K\ell^+\ell^- (\ell = \mu,e)$ and point to two phenomena that arise when new sources of CP violation are included. First, the Wilson coefficients $C_{9\ell}$ and $C_{10\ell}$ become complex, and we show how we can extract their values from measurements of direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetries. Second, new sources of CP violation can generate nontrivial lepton flavour universality violation. Such a violation is usually measured through ratios like $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$, but we show that measuring only these ratios leaves a large parameter space unexplored. These results bring exciting opportunities to reveal New Physics effects in the high-precision era.

This motivated many of us for analogously coming up with ways for direct and clean determinations of the other two unitarity angles, φ2(α) and φ3(γ). Current status of these direct determinations as well as our expectations for when Belle-II has 50 ab−1 of luminosity and LHCb with some upgrades, will be given. In particular, it is emphasized that for direct determination of φ3, Belle-II should be able to handle final states in D0 or $\bar{D}^0$ Dalitz decays, that contain one π0 (which are difficult for LHCb) then they may make further inroads in improving the accuracy of φ3 determination. Early lattice inputs for constraining the unitarity triangle (UT) are briefly recalled. Its crucial role in supporting the Kobayashi-Maskawa theory of CP violation is emphasized. Over the years lattice methods have made significant progress and latest constraints from these for the UT will be discussed as well as compatibility with current direct determinations and some comments on future outlook will be made.

$C\!P$ violation in beauty and charm quarks at LHCb

Abstract:The LHCb experiment has been reporting remarkable $C\!P$-violation (CPV) measurements concerning the sectors of $b$ and $c$ quarks. Recently, the new measurements of time-integrated CPV with $D^0\to K^+ K^-$ decays led to the first evidence ($3.8\sigma$) of CPV in a single charmed decay. The first search for CPV in the $D_{(s)}^+\to K^+K^+K^-$ decays was executed. The knowledge of the CKM parameter $\gamma$ was improved by new results; the current combination of the LHCb measurements is: $\left(63.8^{+3.5}_{-3.7}\right)^\circ$. The study of $B_s^0\to\phi\phi$ decays resulted in the most precise measurement of time-dependent CPV in any penguin-dominated $B$ meson decay. All the results are consistent with the Standard-Model predictions.

Semileptonic $B$ decays from Belle and Belle II

Abstract:This report summarizes recent measurements of the CKM matrix elements $|V_{cb}|$, $|V_{ub}|$, and lepton-flavor universality tests in semileptonic B decays from the Belle and Belle~II experiments. The decay branching factions $R(D^{*})$ and $R(X)$ are measured with the Belle~II early dataset and the results are found to be consistent with the Standard Model predictions. From a simultaneous measurement of untagged $B^0 \to \pi^{-} \ell^{+} \nu$ and $B^{+} \to \rho^0 \ell^{+} \nu$, the $|V_{ub}|$ value is determined incorporating external theoretical constraints on the decay form factors. The first measurement of the full angular coefficients for $B \to D^* \ell \nu$ decays at Belle provides comprehensive information for determining the decay form factors and $|V_{\mathrm{cb}}|$. This presentation also includes measurements of the ratios $|V_{ub}|^{\mathrm{excl}}/|V_{ub}|^{\mathrm{incl}}$ and $|V_{ub}|^{\mathrm{incl}}/|V_{cb}|^{\mathrm{incl}}$.

Abstract:The investigation of $B$ meson decays to charmed and charmless hadronic final states is a keystone of the Belle II program. Analyses of such decays provide reliable and experimentally precise constraints on the weak interactions of quarks. They are sensitive to effects from non-SM physics, and further our knowledge about uncharted $b\rightarrow c$ hadronic transitions. We present new results from combined analyses of Belle and Belle II data to determine the quark-mixing parameter $\phi_3$ (or $\gamma$), and from the Belle II analyses of two-body decays that are related to the determination of $\phi_2$ (or $\alpha$). We also present recent Belle II results on branching ratios and direct $\textit{CP}$-violating asymmetries of several $B$ decays, which result in a competitive standard-model test based on the $K\pi$ isospin sum rule and first observations of three new $B \rightarrow D^{(*)} K K_S^0$ decays.
