Abstract:When the limiting compensator of a sequence of martingales is continuous, we obtain a weak convergence theorem for the martingales; the limiting process can be written as a Brownian motion evaluated at the compensator and we find sufficient conditions for both processes to be independent. Examples of applications are provided, notably for occupation time processes and statistical estimators of financial volatility measures.

Abstract:A convergence theorem for martingales with càdlàg trajectories (right continuous with left limits everywhere) is obtained in the sense of the weak dual topology on Hilbert space, under conditions that are much weaker than those required for any of the usual Skorohod topologies. Examples are provided to show that these conditions are also very easy to check and yield useful asymptotic results, especially when the limit is a mixture of stochastic processes with discontinuities.

Abstract:The central limit theorem of martingales is the fundamental tool for studying the convergence of stochastic processes, especially stochastic integrals and differential equations. In this paper, the central limit theorem and the functional central limit theorem are obtained for martingale-like random variables under the sub-linear expectation. As applications, the Lindeberg’s central limit theorem is obtained for independent but not necessarily identically distributed random variables, and a new proof of the Lévy characterization of a GBrownian motion without using stochastic calculus is given. For proving the results, Rosenthal’s inequality and the exponential inequality for the martingale-like random variables are established.

Abstract:In this paper, by establishing a Borel–Cantelli lemma for a capacity which is not necessarily continuous, and a link between a sequence of independent random variables under the sub-linear expectation and a sequence of independent random variables on ℝ∞ under a probability, we give the sufficient and necessary conditions of the strong law of large numbers for independent and identically distributed random variables under the sub-linear expectation, and the sufficient and necessary conditions for the convergence of an infinite series of independent random variables, without the assumption on the continuity of the capacities. A purely probabilistic proof of a weak law of large numbers is also given.
A note on the renormalization group approach to the Central Limit Theorem

Abstract:Two proofs of the Central Limit Theorem using a renormalization group approach are presented. The first proof is conducted under a third moment assumption and shows that a suitable renormalization group map is a contraction over the space of probability measures with a third moment. The second proof uses Lyapunov stability and works under a second moment condition. These are by far not the most optimal proofs of the CLT, and the main interest of the proofs are their existence, the CLT being the simplest case in which a renormalization group argument should apply. None of the tools used in this note are new. Similar proofs are known amongst expert in limit theorems, but explicit references are not so easy to come by for non-experts in the field.

Abstract:A sharp version of the Central Limit Theorem for linear combinations of iterates of an inner function is proved. The authors previously showed this result assuming a suboptimal condition on the coefficients of the linear combination. Here we explain a variation of the original argument which leads to the sharp result. We also review the steps of the proof as well as the main technical tool, which is Aleksandrov Desintegration Theorem for Aleksandrov-Clark measures.

Abstract:A central limit theorem is established for a sum of random variables belonging to a sequence of random fields. The fields are assumed to have zero mean conditional on the past history and to satisfy certain conditional $\alpha$-mixing conditions in space or time. Exploiting conditional centering and the space-time structure, the limiting normal distribution is obtained for increasing spatial domain, increasing length of the sequence, or both of these. The theorem is very well suited for establishing asymptotic normality in the context of unbiased estimating function inference for a wide range of space-time processes. This is pertinent given the abundance of space-time data. Two examples demonstrate the applicability of the theorem.

We prove that if $1 / f(x, z)$ is twice differentiable, then there exists a constant $\mu$ such that the distribution of $(Y_n - \mu n) / \sqrt{n}$ converges weakly to a normal distribution as $n \to \infty$. If $Y_n = X_1 + \cdots + X_n$, where $(X_n)_n$ are i.i.d. random variables, then we recover the classical (Lindeberg$\unicode{x2013}$Lévy) central limit theorem. We also prove the 2020 conjecture of Defant that if $\pi_n \in \mathfrak{S}_n$ is a uniformly random permutation, then the distribution of $(\operatorname{des} (s(\pi_n)) + 1 - (3 - e) n) / \sqrt{n}$ converges, as $n \to \infty$, to a normal distribution with variance $2 + 2e - e^2$.

In terms of densities $p_n$ of $Z_n$, this is a strengthened variant of the local limit theorem taking the form $\sup_x (p_n(x) - \varphi(x))/\varphi(x) \rightarrow 0$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$.

Abstract:We extend the central limit theorem under the Dedecker-Rio condition to adapted stationary and ergodic sequences of random variables taking values in a class of smooth Banach spaces. This result applies to the case of random variables taking values in $L^p(\mu)$, with $2 \leq p < \infty$ and $\mu$ a $\sigma$-finite real measure. As an application we give a sufficient condition for empirical processes indexed by Sobolev balls to satisfy the central limit theorem, and discuss about the optimality of these conditions.

Abstract:We present and discuss the many results obtained concerning a famous limit theorem, the local limit theorem, which has many interfaces, with Number Theory notably, and for which, in spite of considerable efforts, the question concerning conditions of validity of the local limit theorem, has up to now no satisfactory solution. These results mostly concern sufficient conditions for the validity of the local limit theorem and its interesting variant forms: strong local limit theorem, strong local limit theorem with convergence in variation. Quite importantly are necessary conditions, and the results obtained are sparse, essentially: Rozanov's necessary condition, Gamkrelidze's necessary condition, and Mukhin's necessary and sufficient condition. Extremely useful and instructive are the counter-examples due to Azlarov and Gamkrelidze, as well as necessary and sufficient conditions obtained for a class of random variables, such as Mitalauskas' characterization of the local limit theorem in the strong form for random variables having stable limit distributions. The method of characteristic functions and the Bernoulli part extraction method, are presented and compared. A second part of the survey is devoted to the more recent study of the almost sure local limit theorem, instilled by Denker and Koch. The almost sure local limit theorems established already cover the i.i.d. case, the stable case, Markov chains, the model of the Dickman function. Our aim in writing this monograph was notably to bring to knowledge many interesting results obtained by the Lithuanian and Russian Schools of Probability during the sixties and after, and which are essentially written in Russian, and moreover often published in Journals of difficult access.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a central limit theorem for a sequence of iterated Shorohod integrals using the techniques of Malliavin calculus. The convergence is stable, and the limit is a conditionally Gaussian random variable. Some applications to sequences of multiple stochastic integrals, and renormalized weighted Hermite variations of the fractional Brownian motion are discussed.

Abstract:We formulate and establish the central limit theorem for products of i.i.d. random variables on arbitrary simply connected nilpotent Lie groups, allowing a possible bias. Two new phenomena arise in the presence of a bias: (a) the walk spreads out at a higher rate in the ambient group, (b) the limiting hypoelliptic diffusion process may not have full support. We study the limiting distribution, prove estimates on its density and describe its support. We also establish corresponding Berry-Esseen bounds under optimal moment assumptions, as well as an analogue of Donsker's invariance principle. Various examples of nilpotent Lie groups are treated in detail showing the variety of different behaviours. We also obtain a characterization of when the limiting distribution is an ordinary gaussian and answer a question of Tutubalin from the 1960s regarding asymptotically close distributions on nilpotent Lie groups.

Abstract:Using Stein's method, we prove an abstract result that yields multivariate central limit theorems with a rate of convergence for time-dependent dynamical systems. As examples we study a model of expanding circle maps and a quasistatic model. In both models we prove multivariate central limit theorems with a rate of convergence.
