Conceptual differences between statistical and dynamical approaches and the selection of experimental observables for identification of these processes are outlined. New and perspective developments, like inclusion of in-medium modifications of the properties of hot primary fragments, are discussed. Abstract:Background: A diversity of fragmentation modes has been observed in several types of nuclear reactions, which may correspond to different breakup mechanisms. Purpose: The present work is an attempt to compare the mechanisms of the fragment emission in central heavyion collision near the Fermi energy, projectile fragmentation, and proton-induced spallation. Method: The collisions until the prefragments with excitation energy less than 2 MeV/nucleon are studied using the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) model, while the evaporations of light particles from the prefragments are described by the statistical code GEMINI. In the IQMD model, the binary nucleon-nucleon collisions with the Pauli blocking are applied to treat some features of fermionic motion phenomenologically. However, the binary collisions are scarce in the region where the relative momenta between the nucleons are small. Thus, the method of the phase space density constraint (PSDC) are applied in the IQMD model in order to treat phenomenologically the features of fermionic motion. Results: The calculations of various observables are compared to the available data. The comparison not only shows the similar regularities of the calculations to the data, but also emphasizes the role of the PSDC method. The dynamical E-rho trajectories show that the compression-expansion phase in the central HIC near the Fermi energy results in the spinodal decomposition. While in the projectile fragmentation and proton-induced spallation, the projectiles are heated without compression and then cool down with slight expansion. However, driven by the dynamical fluctuations, the spinodal instability is possible for a part of the events. The perhaps most important result of this study is the significant role of the fermionic feature in the mechanisms of the fragment emission. Conclusions: The IQMD + GEMINI framework provides a uniform description of breakup mechanisms in central collision, projectile fragmentation, and proton-induced spallation.

Abstract:We use the formulation of equilibrium statistical mechanics in order to study some important characteristics of language. Using a simple expression for the Hamiltonian of a language system, which is directly implied by the Zipf law, we are able to explain several characteristic features of human language that seem completely unrelated, such as the universality of the Zipf exponent, the vocabulary size of children, the reduced communication abilities of people suffering from schizophrenia, etc. While several explanations are necessarily only qualitative at this stage, we have, nevertheless, been able to derive a formula for the vocabulary size of children as a function of age, which agrees rather well with experimental data.

Abstract:A classical dynamical model that treats breakup stochastically is presented for low energy reactions of weakly bound nuclei. The three-dimensional model allows a consistent calculation of breakup, incomplete, and complete fusion cross sections. The model is assessed by comparing the breakup observables with continuum discretized coupled-channel quantum mechanical predictions, which are found to be in reasonable agreement. Through the model, it is demonstrated that the breakup probability of the projectile as a function of its distance from the target is of primary importance for understanding complete and incomplete fusion at energies near the Coulomb barrier.

Abstract:We present a new quantum field-theoretic definition of fully unintegrated dihadron fragmentation functions (DiFFs) as well as a generalized version for n -hadron fragmentation functions. We demonstrate that this definition allows certain sum rules to be satisfied, making it consistent with a number density interpretation. Moreover, we show how our corresponding so-called extended DiFFs that enter existing phenomenological studies are number densities and also derive their evolution equations. Abstract:Breakup reactions are one of the favored probes to study loosely bound nuclei, particularly those in the limit of stability forming a halo. In order to interpret such breakup experiments, the continuum discretized coupled channel method is typically used. In this study, the first Bayesian analysis of a breakup reaction model is performed. We use a combination of statistical methods together with a three-body reaction model (the continuum discretized coupled channel method) to quantify the uncertainties on the breakup observables due to the parameters in the effective potential describing the loosely bound projectile of interest. The combination of tools we develop opens the path for a Bayesian analysis of not only breakup processes, but also a wide array of complex processes that require computationally intensive reaction models.

Abstract:We address the problem of the post-prior equivalence in inclusive breakup reactions induced by weakly-bound nuclei. The problem is studied within the DWBA model of Ichimura, Austern, Vincent [Phys. Rev. C32, 431 (1985)]. The post and prior formulas obtained in this model are briefly recalled, and applied to several breakup reactions induced by deuterons and $^6$Li projectiles, to test their actual numerical equivalence. The different contributions of the prior-form formula are also discussed. A critical comparison with the prior-form distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) model of Udagawa and Tamura [Phys. Rev. C24, 1348 (1981)] is also provided.

Abstract:We present an account of the current status of the theoretical treatment of inclusive $(d,p)$ reactions in the breakup-fusion formalism, pointing to some applications and making the connection with current experimental capabilities. Three independent implementations of the reaction formalism have been recently developed, making use of different numerical strategies. The codes also originally relied on two different but equivalent representations, namely the prior (Udagawa-Tamura, UT) and the post (Ichimura-Austern-Vincent, IAV) representations. The different implementations have been benchmarked, and then applied to the Ca isotopic chain. The neutron-Ca propagator is described in the Dispersive Optical Model (DOM) framework, and the interplay between elastic breakup (EB) and non-elastic breakup (NEB) is studied for three Ca isotopes at two different bombarding energies. The accuracy of the description of different reaction observables is assessed by comparing with experimental data of $(d,p)$ on $^{40,48}$Ca. We discuss the predictions of the model for the extreme case of an isotope ($^{60}$Ca) currently unavailable experimentally, though possibly available in future facilities (nominally within production reach at FRIB). We explore the use of $(d,p)$ reactions as surrogates for $(n,\gamma)$ processes, by using the formalism to describe the compound nucleus formation in a $(d,p\gamma)$ reaction as a function of excitation energy, spin, and parity. The subsequent decay is then computed within a Hauser-Feshbach formalism. Comparisons between the $(d,p\gamma)$ and $(n,\gamma)$ induced gamma decay spectra are discussed to inform efforts to infer neutron captures from $(d,p\gamma)$ reactions. Finally, we identify areas of opportunity for future developments, and discuss a possible path toward a predictive reaction theory.

Avenues for a number density interpretation of dihadron fragmentation functions

Abstract:In this comment, we reassess the underlying physics of the number sum rule for dihadron fragmentation functions. We will argue that, currently, there are no settled constraints on what constitutes a valid number density interpretation for multihadron fragmentation functions. Imposing overly restrictive criteria might lead to misinterpretating the data. Most importantly, and on the basis of phenomenological analyses, the slightly varying definitions used in previous work are not excluded from possessing legitimate number density interpretations (up to the usual issues with ultraviolet divergences and renormalization), so long as they are paired with appropriate factorization theorems. We advocate for further theoretical analyses to be challenged with experimental data, available at JLab or at the future EIC.

Inclusive breakup of Borromean nuclei

Abstract:We derive the inclusive breakup cross section of a three-fragment projectile nuclei, $a = b +x_1 + x_2$, in the spectator model. The resulting four-body cross section for observing $b$, is composed of the elastic breakup cross section which contains information about the correlation between the two participant fragments, and the inclusive non-elastic breakup cross section. This latter cross section is found to be a non-trivial four-body generalization of the Austern formula \cite{Austern1987}, which is proportional to a matrix element of the form, $\langle\hat{\rho}_{{x_1},{x_2}}\left|\left[W_{x_1} + W_{x_2} + W_{3B}\right]\right|\hat{\rho}_{{x_1}, {x_2}}\rangle$. The new feature here is the three-body absorption, represented by the imaginary potential, $W_{3B}$. We analyze this type of absorption and supply ideas of how to calculate its contribution.

Abstract:The ternary breakup mechanism of $^{238}\mathrm{U}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}+\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{197}\mathrm{Au}$ at $15A$ MeV has been investigated by a hybrid model that combines the improved quantum molecular dynamics (ImQMD) model together with a statistical code gemini++. The results are in good agreement with the experimental data and indicate that in peripheral reactions, ternary breakup in this reaction results from quasi-U statistical fission while for central and semicentral collisions it can be understood by a two-step mechanism: deep-inelastic collision (DIC) followed by a sequential binary breakup of one of the DIC products. In the process of DIC, there is a large mass transfer from Au to U to form transuranium. Due to the low fission barrier, such transuranium nuclei will decay into stable light nuclei through various fission modes. An event-by-event analysis shows that the second breakup mainly occurs in the deexcitation process and most of the ternary breakup events are from semicentral and peripheral collisions that correspond to deep inelastic and quasi-elastic reactions, respectively.

Abstract:Use of deuteron-induced spallation reactions at intermediate energies has recently been proposed for transmutation of several long-lived fission products (LLFPs). In the design study of a transmutation system using a deuteron primary beam, accurate cross section data of deuteron-induced reactions on the LLFPs are indispensable. Reliable model predictions play an important role in completing the necessary cross section data since currently available experimental data are very limited. Under the circumstances, we have been developing a code system dedicated for deuteron-induced reactions, which is called DEURACS. Aiming to predict the production cross sections of residual nuclei, the purpose of the present work is to clarify a role of deuteron breakup processes in deuteron-induced spallation reactions at intermediate energies. Isotopic production cross sections of residual nuclei in the deuteron-induced reactions on 93Zr and 107Pd at 100-200 MeV/nucleon are analyzed using DEURACS, in which the breakup processes are explicitly taken into account. The calculated cross sections are decomposed into individual components corresponding to the absorption of either neutron or proton in the incident deuteron, or the deuteron itself. The calculated cross sections reproduced the experimental data well over a wide mass number range of residual nuclei. From a component-by-component analysis, it was found that the components of nucleon absorption have the significant contributions to the production of residual nuclei. Consideration of the breakup processes is essential to predict the production cross sections of residual nuclei in deuteron-induced reactions. The framework of DEURACS is applicable to deuteron-induced spallation reactions at intermediate energies.

Abstract:The transformation of an atomic nucleus into two excited fission fragments is modeled as a strongly damped evolution of the nuclear shape. As in previous studies, it is assumed that the division of mass and charge is frozen in at a critical neck radius of c0=2.5fm. In order to also determine the energetics, we follow the system further until scission occurs at a smaller neck radius, at which point the shapes of the proto-fragments are extracted. The statistical energy available at scission is then divided on the basis of the respective microscopic level densities. This approach takes account of important (and energy-dependent) finite-size effects. After the fragments have been fully accelerated and their shapes have relaxed to their equilibrium forms, they undergo sequential neutron evaporation. The dependence of the resulting mean neutron multiplicity on the fragment mass, ν¯(A), including the dependence on the initial excitation energy of the fissioning compound nucleus, agrees reasonably well with observations, as demonstrated here for 235U(n, f), and the sawtooth appearance of ν¯(A) can be understood from shell-structure effects in the level densities.

Abstract:We introduce an approach to particle breakage, wherein the particle is modeled as an aggregate of polyhedral cells with their common surfaces governed by the Griffith criterion of fracture. This model is implemented within a discrete element code to simulate and analyze the breakage behavior of a single particle impacting a rigid plane. We find that fracture dynamics involves three distinct regimes as a function of the normalized impact energy ω . At low values of ω , the particle undergoes elastic rebound and no cracks occur inside the particle. In the intermediate range, the particle is damaged by nucleation and propagation of cracks, and the effective restitution coefficient declines without breakup of the particle. Finally, for values of ω beyond a well-defined threshold, the particle breaks into fragments and the restitution coefficient increases with ω due to kinetic energy carried away by the fragments. We show that particle damage, restitution coefficient, and fracture efficiency (the amount of energy input consumed for particle fracture) collapse well as a function of dimensionless scaling parameters. Our data are also sufficiently accurate to scale fragment size and shape distributions. It is found that fragment masses (volumes) follow a power-law distribution with an exponent decreasing with fracture energy. Interestingly, the average elongation and flatness of fragments are very close to those observed in experiments and lunar samples at the optimal fracture efficiency. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.109.044907 ©2024 American Physical Society

Understanding fission fragment mass distributions in a modified shape of random neck rupture model

Abstract:The variances of the fission fragment mass distributions for symmetric fission over a wide range of the fissility of the compound nucleus have been investigated within the frame work of Random Neck Rupture Model (RNRM) proposed by Brosa et. al.,. The shape of the fissioning nucleus is generated using crel=1 in the RNRM model, which results in a smooth and continuous shape of fissioning nucleus. This modified shape of RNRM model has been used to analyse experimental data of mass variances for symmetric mass distributions of 27 systems leading to understanding of scission shape dynamics in a wide region of fissility 0.7-0.95. The neck radius is an important parameter of the RNRM model and this has been varied to fit the experimental mass variances data. The systematics of resulting neck radii are studied of as a function fissility and nuclear potential through {\gamma}o, the surface energy coefficient. Further average total kinetic energies of fission fragments <TKE> are studied of as a function of fissility and {\gamma}o parameter. It is observed that the neck radii that fit the experimentally observed variances of the mass distributions fall into two groups and these groups are related to two groups of experimentally observed <TKE>s. Empirical formulae have been obtained for the neck radii for these two groups of fissioning systems. Use of the empirical formulae for neck radii predict the mass variances reasonably well for these systems and it is shown that these empirical neck radii are better estimates than starting with the Rayleigh criterion.16pages,7 figures

Abstract:Deuteron breakup in collision with a Mg24 nucleus is studied using rigorous three-body scattering equations, extended to include also the excitation of the nucleus. Predictions based on local and nonlocal nucleon-nucleus optical potentials with rotational quadrupole deformation enabling the excitation of the Mg24(2+) state are compared. Definition of fragmentation functions and the violation of sum rules

Abstract:We point out a problem with the formulation and derivations of sum rules for quark fragmentation functions that impacts their validity in QCD, but which potentially points toward an improved understanding of final states in inclusive hard processes. Fragmentation functions give the distribution of final-state hadrons arising from a parton exiting a hard scattering, and the sum rules for momentum, electric charge, etc. express conservation of these quantities. The problem arises from a mismatch between the quark quantum numbers of the initial quark and the fact that all observed final-state hadrons are confined bound states with color zero. We point that, in a confining theory like QCD, the Wilson line in the operator definition of a fragmentation function entails that the final state in a fragmentation function includes a bound state in the external field generated by the Wilson line. We justify this with the aid of general features of string hadronization. The anomalous bound states are restricted to fractional momentum z=0 . They tend to invalidate sum rules like the one for charge conservation when applied to the fragmentation functions inferred from experimental data but not the momentum sum rule. We propose to exploit our ideas in future studies as a way to relate the fragmentation functions extracted from inclusive cross sections to more detailed nonperturbative descriptions of final state hadronization. Abstract:We derive closed expressions for the nuclear breakup cross sections in the adiabatic limit using the Austern-Blair theory. These expressions are appropriate for the breakup of weakly bound nuclei. The concept of an exit doorway that mediates the coupling between the entrance channel and the breakup continuum is used. We prove the validity of the scaling law that dictates that the nuclear breakup cross section scales linearly with the radius of the target. We also compare our results for the nuclear breakup cross section of $^{11}$Be, $^8$B on several targets with recent CDCC calculation.
