Abstract:We give some uniform estimates for constant mean curvature solutions of the conformal vacuum Einstein constraint equations on compact manifolds. Existence of those solutions was given in a paper by J. Isenberg.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the problem of conformally deforming a metric to a prescribed kth order symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Schouten tensor on compact Riemannian manifolds with totally geodesic boundary. We prove the solvability of the problem and the compactness of the solution set for the case k >= n/2, provided the conformal class admits a k-admissible metric. These results have been proved by Gursky and Viaclovsky, Trudinger and Wang for the manifolds without boundary, and by Jin et al. and S. Chen for the locally conformally flat manifolds with boundary.

Abstract:In this paper, we solve a class of Neumann problems on a manifold with totally geodesic smooth boundary. As a consequence, we also solve the prescribing k-curvature problem of the modified Schouten tensor on such manifolds; that is, if the initial k-curvature of the modified Schouten tensor is positive for tau > n - 1 or negative for tau < 1, then there exists a conformal metric such that its k-curvature defined by the modified Schouten tensor equals some prescribed function and the boundary remains totally geodesic.

Abstract:Let M be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension n > 2. The k-curvature, for k = 1,2,...,n, is defined as the k-th elementary symmetric polynomial of the eigenvalues of the Schouten tenser. The k-Yamabe problem is to prove the existence of a conformal metric whose k-curvature is a constant. When k = 1, it reduces to the well-known Yamabe problem. Under the assumption that the metric is admissible, the existence of solutions is known for the case k = 2, n = 4, for locally conformally flat manifolds and for the cases k > n/2. In this paper we prove the solvability of the k-Yamabe problem in the remaining cases k ≤ n/2, under the hypothesis that the problem is variational. This includes all of the cases k = 2 as well as the locally conformally flat case.

Abstract:We prove the existence of a large class of initial data for the vacuum Einstein equations which possess a finite number of asymptotically Euclidean and asymptotically conformally cylindrical or periodic ends. Aside from being asymptotically constant, only mild conditions on the mean curvature of these initial data sets are imposed.

Abstract:On a compact three-dimensional Riemannian manifold with boundary, we prove the compactness of the full set of conformal metrics with positive constant scalar curvature and constant mean curvature on the boundary. This involves a blow-up analysis of a Yamabe equation with critical Sobolev exponents both in the interior and on the boundary.

Abstract:Using the implicit function theorem, we prove existence of solutions of the so-called conformally covariant split system on compact 3-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. They give rise to non-constant mean curvature (non-CMC) vacuum initial data for the Einstein equations. We investigate the conformally covariant split system defined on compact manifolds with or without boundaries. In the former case, the boundary corresponds to an apparent horizon in the constructed initial data. The case with a cosmological constant is then considered separately. Finally, to demonstrate the applicability of the conformal covariant split system in numerical studies, we provide numerical examples of solutions on manifolds and .
Uniform Convergence of Metrics on Alexandrov Surfaces with Bounded Integral Curvature

Abstract:We prove uniform convergence of metrics $g_k$ on a closed surface with bounded integral curvature (measure) in the sense of A.D. Alexandrov, under the assumption that the curvature measures $\mathbb{K}_{g_k}=\mu^1_k-\mu^2_k$, where $\mu^1_k,\mu^2_k$ are nonnegative Radon measures converging weakly to measures $\mu^1,\mu^2$ respectively, and $\mu^1$ is less than $2\pi$ at each point (no cusps). This is the global version of Yu. G. Reshetnyak's well-known result on uniform convergence of metrics on a domain in $\mathbb{C}$, and answers affirmatively the open question on the metric convergence on a closed surface. We also give an analytic proof of the fact that a (singular) metric $g=e^{2u}g_0$ with bounded integral curvature on a closed Riemannian surface $(\Sigma,g_0)$ can be approximated by smooth metrics in the fixed conformal class $[g_0]$

Abstract:In the famous textbook written by Landau and Lifshitz all the vacuum metrics of the general theory of relativity are derived, which depend on one coordinate in the absence of a cosmological constant. Unfortunately, when considering these solutions, the authors missed some of the possible solutions discussed in this article. An exact solution is demonstrated, which is absent in the book by Landau and Lifshitz. It describes space-time with a gravitational wave of zero frequency. It is shown that there are no other solutions of this type than listed above and Minkowski's metrics. The list of vacuum metrics that depend on one coordinate is not complete without the solution provided in this paper.

Abstract:In this paper we obtain first a gap theorem for a class of conformally compact Einstein manifolds with a renormalized volume that is close to its maximum value. We also use a blow-up method to derive curvature estimates for conformally compact Einstein manifolds with large renormalized volume. The major part of this paper is the study of how a property of the conformal infinity influences the geometry of the interior of a conformally compact Einstein manifold. Specifically we are interested in conformally compact Einstein manifolds with conformal infinity whose Yamabe invariant is close to that of the round sphere. Based on the approach initiated by Dutta and Javaheri we present a complete proof of the relative volume inequality(Y(partial derivative X,[(g) over cap])/Y(Sn-1 ,[gs]))(n-1) <= Vol(partial derivative B-g+(p,t))/Vol(partial derivative B-gH+(0,t)) <= Vol(B-g+(p,t))/Vol(B-gH+(0,t)) <= 1,for conformally compact Einstein manifolds. This leads not only to the complete proof of the rigidity theorem for conformally compact Einstein manifolds in arbitrary dimension without spin assumption but also a new curvature pinching estimate for conformally compact Einstein manifolds with conformal infinities having large Yamabe invariant. We also derive curvature estimates for such manifolds.
Some Uniformization Problems for a Fourth order Conformal Curvature

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the existence of conformal deformations that uniformize fourth order curvature on 4-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with positive conformal invariants. Specifically, we prove that any closed, compact Riemannian manifold with positive Yamabe invariant and total $Q$-curvature can be conformally deformed into a metric with positive scalar curvature and constant $Q$-curvature. For a Riemannian manifold with umbilic boundary, positive first Yamabe invariant and total $(Q, T)$-curvature, it is possible to deform it into two types of Riemannian manifolds with totally geodesic boundary and positive scalar curvature. The first type satisfies $Q\equiv \text{constant}, T \equiv 0$ while the second type satisfies $Q\equiv 0, T \equiv \text{constant}$.

Abstract:The structure of the history phase space $\cal G$ of a covariant field system and its history group (in the sense of Isham and Linden) is analyzed on an example of a bosonic string. The history space $\cal G$ includes the time map $\sf T$ from the spacetime manifold (the two-sheet) $\cal Y$ to a one-dimensional time manifold $\cal T$ as one of its configuration variables. A canonical history action is posited on $\cal G$ such that its restriction to the configuration history space yields the familiar Polyakov action. The standard Dirac-ADM action is shown to be identical with the canonical history action, the only difference being that the underlying action is expressed in two different coordinate charts on $\cal G$. The canonical history action encompasses all individual Dirac-ADM actions corresponding to different choices $\sf T$ of foliating $\cal Y$. The history Poisson brackets of spacetime fields on $\cal G$ induce the ordinary Poisson brackets of spatial fields in the instantaneous phase space ${\cal G}_{0}$ of the Dirac-ADM formalism. The canonical history action is manifestly invariant both under spacetime diffeomorphisms Diff$\cal Y$ and temporal diffeomorphisms Diff$\cal T$. Both of these diffeomorphisms are explicitly represented by symplectomorphisms on the history phase space $\cal G$. The resulting classical history phase space formalism is offered as a starting point for projection operator quantization and consistent histories interpretation of the bosonic string model.

Dimension constraints in some problems involving intermediate curvature

Abstract:In <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2207.08617" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2207.08617">arXiv:2207.08617</a> [math.DG] Brendle-Hirsch-Johne proved that $T^m\times S^{n-m}$ does not admit metrics with positive $m$-intermediate curvature when $n\leq 7$. Chu-Kwong-Lee showed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2208.12240" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2208.12240">arXiv:2208.12240</a> [math.DG] a corresponding rigidity statement when $n\leq 5$. In this paper, we show the sharpness of the dimension constraints by giving concrete counterexamples in $n\geq 7$ and extending the rigidity result to $n=6$. Concerning uniformly positive intermediate curvature, we show that simply-connected manifolds with dimension $\leq 5$ and bi-Ricci curvature $\geq 1$ have finite Urysohn 1-width. Counterexamples are constructed in dimension $\geq 6$.

Abstract:We extend the study of the vacuum Einstein constraint equations on manifolds with ends of cylindrical type initiated by Chruściel and Mazzeo (2012) and Chruściel et al (2012 Adv. Theor. Math. Phys. at press) by finding a class of solutions to the fully coupled system on such manifolds. We show that given a Yamabe positive metric g which is conformally asymptotically cylindrical on each end and a 2-tensor K such that (trgK)2 is bounded below away from zero and asymptotically constant, then we may find an initial data set such that lies in the conformal class of g.

A rigidity theorem for asymptotically flat static manifolds and its applications

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Minkowski-type inequality for asymptotically flat static manifolds $(M^{n}, g)$ with boundary and with dimension $ n < 8$ that was establishedby McCormick. First, we show that any asymptotically flat static $(M^{n},g)$ which achieves the equality and has CMC or equipotential boundary is isometric to a rotationally symmetric region of the Schwarzschild manifold. Then, we apply conformal techniques to derive a new Minkowski-type inequality for the level sets of bounded static potentials. Taken together, these provide a robust approach to detecting rotational symmetry of asymptotically flat static systems. As an application, we prove global uniqueness of static metric extensions for the Bartnik data induced by both Schwarzschild coordinate spheres and Euclidean coordinate spheres in dimension $n < 8$ under the natural condition of Schwarzschild stability. This generalizes an earlier result of Miao. We also establish uniqueness for equipotential photon surfaces with small Einstein-Hilbert energy. This is interesting to compare with other recent uniqueness results for static photon surfaces and black holes.

Solving the Einstein Constraints Numerically on Compact Three-Manifolds Using Hyperbolic Relaxation

Abstract:The effectiveness of the hyperbolic relaxation method for solving the Einstein constraint equations numerically is studied here on a variety of compact orientable three-manifolds. Convergent numerical solutions are found using this method on manifolds admitting negative Ricci scalar curvature metrics, i.e. those from the $H^3$ and the $H^2\times S^1$ geometrization classes. The method fails to produce solutions, however, on all the manifolds examined here admitting non-negative Ricci scalar curvatures, i.e. those from the $S^3$, $S^2\times S^1$, and the $E^3$ classes. This study also finds that the accuracy of the convergent solutions produced by hyperbolic relaxation can be increased significantly by performing fairly low-cost standard elliptic solves using the hyperbolic relaxation solutions as initial guesses.
