Abstract:We consider a purely algebraic result. Then given a circle or cyclic group of prime order action on a manifold, we will use it to estimate the lower bound of the number of fixed points. We also give an obstruction to the existence of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ action on manifolds with isolated fixed points when $p$ is a prime.

Abstract:Consider a locally compact group $G$ and a locally compact space $X$. A local right action of $G$ on $X$ is a continuous map $(x,p)\mapsto x\cdot p$ from an open subset $\Gamma$ of the Cartesian product $X\times G$ to $X$ satisfying certain obvious properties. A global right action of $G$ on $X$ gives rise to a global left action of $G$ on the space $C_c(X)$ of continuous complex functions with compact support in $X$ by the formula $p\,\cdot f:x\mapsto f(x\cdot p)$. In the case of a local action, one still can define $p\,\cdot f$ in $C_c(X)$ by this formula for $f\in C_c(X)$ and $p$ in a neighborhood $V_f$ of the identity in $G$. This yields a local left action of $G$ on $C_c(X)$. Given a local right action of $G$ on $X$, a function $f\in C_c(X)$ is called polynomial if there is a neighborhood $V$ of the identity, contained in $V_f$, and a finite-dimensional subspace $F$ of $C_c(X)$ containing all the functions $v\cdot f$ for $v\in V$. In this paper we study such polynomial functions. If $G$ acts on itself by multiplication, we are also interested in the local actions obtained by restricting it to an open subset of $G$. This is the typical situation that is encountered in our paper on bicrossproducts of groups with a compact open subgroup. In fact, the need for a better understanding of polynomial functions for that case has led us to develop the theory in general here.

Abstract:This paper presents a modified version of Leibman's group-theoretic generalizations of the difference calculus for polynomial maps from nonempty commutative semigroups to groups, and proves that it has many desirable formal properties when the target group is locally nilpotent and also when the semigroup is the set of nonnegative integers. We will apply it to solve Waring's problem for general discrete Heisenberg groups in a sequel to this paper.

Abstract:On the generalized tangent bundle of a smooth manifold, we study skew-symmetric endomorphism satisfying an arbitrary polynomial equation with real constant coefficients. We study the compatibility of these structures with the de Rham operator and the Courant-Dorfman bracket. In particular we isolate several conditions that when restricted to the motivating example of generalized almost complex structure are equivalent to the notion of integrability.

Abstract: In this paper, we will develop more character varieties for a finite group $G$ by generalizing original character theory of Frobenius to good partition algebras. In the view of this generalization theory, we will reformulate the refined McKay conjecture and part of Navarro' conjecture on degrees of irreducible characters into a new general conjecture in the form of equality of polynomials. We will define the Frobenius polynomial, degree polynomial and prove that the ordinary character table of $G$ is equivalent to the Frobenius polynomial of the center of $FG$. We find a new series of invariants $p_{ijl}$ for a finite group. As an application of this new invariants, we prove that the normal series of a finite pure perfect group is determined by the lengths of its conjugate classes.

Abstract:In this paper we consider two functions related to the arithmetic and geometric means of element orders of a finite group, showing that certain lower bounds on such functions strongly affect the group structure. In particular, for every prime p , we prove a sufficient condition for a finite group to be p -nilpotent, that is, a group whose elements of p′ -order form a normal subgroup. Moreover, we characterize finite cyclic groups with prescribed number of prime divisors.

Abstract:We construct a finite subgroup of Brauer-Manin obstruction for detecting the existence of integral points on integral models of homogeneous spaces of linear algebraic groups of multiplicative type. As application, the strong approximation theorem for linear algebraic groups of multiplicative type is established. Moreover, the sum of two integral squares over some quadratic fields is discussed.

Abstract:We give strong necessary conditions on the admissibility of a Polish group topology for an arbitrary graph product of groups $G(\Gamma, G_a)$, and use them to give a characterization modulo a finite set of nodes. As a corollary, we give a complete characterization in case all the factor groups $G_a$ are countable.

Abstract:By generalizing Frobenius' polynomial method to good partition algebra, we will develop new character theories for a finite group $G$. A uniform defining equations are derived for these kinds of character theories. The new character theories leads to various factorizations of the group determinant. We will show that these new character theories are equivalent to the Frobenius polynomials of the correspondent good partition algebras. In particular, the character table of a finite group $G$ can be replaced by the Frobenius polynomial of $G$ which is a kind of degenerate of the group determinant. As applications, we find a new series of invariants $p_{ijl}$ for a finite group. In particular, a finite simple group is determined by these invariants. As further applications, the degrees of all irreducible characters can also be realized as the solutions of a polynomial of $G$ and we can combine the refined McKay conjecture and part of Galois conjecture of Navarro on degrees of irreducible characters into a new general conjecture.

Abstract:Exponential semi-polynomials on semigroups are natural generalizations of exponential polynomials on groups. We show that several of the standard properties of exponential polynomials on groups also hold for exponential semi-polynomials on semigroups. The main result is that for topological commutative monoids S belonging to a certain class, a function in C ( S ) is an exponential semi-polynomial if and only if it is contained in a finite dimensional translation invariant linear subspace. We also show that some standard results about polynomials on commutative semigroups are in fact valid on all semigroups.

Abstract:We study the action of the group of polynomial automorphisms of C^n (n>2) which preserve the Markoff-Hurwitz polynomial H(x):= x_1^2 + x_2^2 + ... + x_n^2 - x_1 x_2 ... x_n. Our main results include the determination of the group, the description of a non-empty open subset of C^n on which the group acts properly discontinuously (domain of discontinuity), and identities for the orbit of points in the domain of discontinuity.

Abstract:The theory of a two-valued algebraic group structure on a complex plane and complex projective line is developed. In this theory, depending on the choice of the neutral element, the local multiplication law is given by the Buchstaber polynomial or the generalized Kontsevich polynomial. One of the most exciting results of our studies is a simple construction of a two-valued algebraic group on $\mathbb C$ different from known coset-construction.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to show that fundamental concepts in higher-order Fourier analysis can be nauturally extended to the non-commutative setting. We generalize Gowers norms to arbitrary compact non-commutative groups. On the structural side, we show that nilspace theory (the algebraic part of higher-order Fourier analysis) can be naturally extended to include all non-commutative groups. To this end, we introduce generalized nilspaces called "groupspaces" and demonstrate that they possess properties very similar to nilspaces. We study $k$-th order generalizations of groups that are special groupspaces called {\it k-step} groupspaces. One step groupspaces are groups. We show that $k$-step groupspaces admit the structure of an iterated principal bundle with structure groups $G_1,G_2,\dots,G_k$. A similar, but somewhat more technical statement holds for general groupspaces, with possibly infinitely many structure groups. Structure groups of groupspaces are in some sense analogous to higher homotopy groups. In particular we use a version of the Eckmann-Hilton argument from homotopy theory to show that $G_i$ is abelian for $i\geq 2$. Groupspaces also show some similarities with $n$-groups from higher category theory (also used in physics) but the exact relationship between these concepts is a subject of future research.

Abstract:In the late 80s, V.~Arnold and V.~Vassiliev initiated the topological study of the space of real univariate polynomials of a given degree d and with no real roots of multiplicity exceeding a given positive integer. Expanding their studies, we consider the spaces of real monic univariate polynomials of degree d whose real divisors avoid sequences of root multiplicities taken from a given poset of compositions which is closed under certain natural combinatorial operations. In this paper, we concentrate on the fundamental group of such spaces. We find explicit presentations for the fundamental groups in terms of generators and relations and show that in a number of cases they are free with rank bounded from above by a quadratic function in d. We also show that the fundamental group stabilizes for d large. We further show that the fundamental groups admit an interpretation as special bordisms of immersions of 1-manifolds into the cylinder S^1 \times R, whose images avoid the tangency patterns from the poset with respect to the generators of the cylinder.

Abstract:In this paper we study the finite groups in which every element has prime power order, briefly them EPPO-groups. The classification of EPPO-groups is given including the cases of solvable, non-solvable and simple EPPO-groups. This paper is published in Journal of Yunnan Education College, no.1(1986), p.2-10 (in Chinese). Translate it to English is helpful for readers for citing some conclusions of this paper. For example, the result of solvable EPPO-groups(see Theorem 2.4 in the text) is detailed more than G. Higman's conclusion (see reference 1 in this paper).
