Abstract:It is believed that unbroken PT symmetry is sufficient to guarantee that the spectrum of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian is real. We prove that this is not true. We study a Hamiltonian with complex spectrum for which PT symmetry is not spontaneously broken.

Abstract:We study a non-Hermitian two-level system with square-wave modulated dissipation and coupling. Based on the Floquet theory, we achieve an effective Hamiltonian from which the boundaries of the PT phase diagram captured exactly. Two kinds of PT symmetry are broken phases are found, whose effective Hamiltonians differ by a constant omega/2. For the time-periodic dissipation, a vanishingly small dissipation strength can lead to the PT symmetry breaking in the (2k-1)-photon resonance (Delta= (2k-1)omega), with k=1,2,3... It is worth noting that such a phenomenon can also happen in 2k-photon resonance (Delta= 2k omega), as long as the dissipation strengths or the driving times are imbalanced, namely gamma(0) not equal -gamma(1) or T-0 not equal T-1. For the time-periodic coupling, the weak dissipation induced PT Delta(eff) = k omega, where Delta(eff) = (Delta T-0(0) + Delta T-1(1))/T. In the high frequency limit, the phase boundary is given by a simple relation gamma(eff) = +/-Delta(eff).

Abstract:A physical requirement on the Hamiltonian operator in quantum mechanics is that it must generate real energy spectrum and unitary time evolution. While the Hamiltonians are Dirac Hermitian in conventional quantum mechanics, they observe PT-symmetry in PT-symmetric quantum theory. The embedding property was first studied by Günther and Samsonov [1] to visualise the evolution of unbroken PT-symmetric Hamiltonians on C2 by Hermitian Hamiltonians on C4. This paper investigates the properties of PT-symmetric quantum systems including the embedding property. We provide a full characterization of the embedding property in the general case and show that only unbroken PT-symmetric quantum systems admit this property in a finite dimensional space. Furthermore, utilizing this property, we establish a physically realizable simulation process of the unbroken PT-symmetric Hamiltonians. An observation that the unbroken PT-symmetric quantum systems can be viewed as open systems in the conventional quantum mechanics accounts for the consistency of PT-symmetric quantum theory.
Geometric Origin of Non-Bloch PT Symmetry Breaking

Abstract:The parity-time (PT) symmetry of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian leads to real (complex) energy spectrum when the non-Hermiticity is below (above) a threshold. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the non-Hermitian skin effect generates a new type of PT symmetry, dubbed the non-Bloch PT symmetry, featuring unique properties such as high sensitivity to the boundary condition. Despite its relevance to a wide range of non-Hermitian lattice systems, a general theory is still lacking for this generic phenomenon even in one spatial dimension. Here, we uncover the geometric mechanism of non-Bloch PT symmetry and its breaking. We find that non-Bloch PT symmetry breaking occurs by the formation of cusps in the generalized Brillouin zone (GBZ). Based on this geometric understanding, we propose an exact formula that efficiently determines the breaking threshold. Moreover, we predict a new type of spectral singularities associated with the symmetry breaking, dubbed non-Bloch van Hove singularity, whose physical mechanism fundamentally differs from their Hermitian counterparts. This singularity is experimentally observable in linear responses.

Abstract:By adding an imaginary interacting term proportional to ip(1)p(2) to the Hamiltonian of a free anisotropic planar oscillator, we construct a model which is described by the PT-pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian with the permutation symmetry of two dimensions. We prove that our model is equivalent to the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator and thus establish a relationship between our PT-pseudo-Hermitian system and the fourth-order derivative oscillator model. We also point out the spontaneous breaking of permutation symmetry which plays a crucial role in giving a real spectrum free of interchange of positive and negative energy levels in our model. Moreover, we find that the permutation symmetry of two dimensions in our Hamiltonian corresponds to the identity (not in magnitude but in attribute) of two different frequencies in the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator, and reveal that the unequal-frequency condition imposed as a prerequisite upon the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator can reasonably be explained as the spontaneous breaking of this identity.

Abstract:We study the parity- and time-reversal ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with two conjugated imaginary potentials $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}i\ensuremath{\gamma}$ at two end sites. The SSH model is known as one of the simplest two-band topological models which has topologically trivial and nontrivial phases. We find that the non-Hermitian terms can lead to different effects on the properties of the eigenvalues spectrum in topologically trivial and nontrivial phases. In the topologically trivial phase, the system undergos an abrupt transition from the unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry region to the spontaneously broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry region at a certain ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{c}$, and a second transition occurs at another transition point ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{{c}^{{}^{\ensuremath{'}}}}$ when further increasing the strength of the imaginary potential $\ensuremath{\gamma}$. But in the topologically nontrivial phase, the zero-mode edge states become unstable for arbitrary nonzero $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry of the system is spontaneously broken, which is characterized by the emergence of a pair of conjugated imaginary modes.

Abstract:Since the realization of quantum systems described by non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with parity-time (PT) symmetry, interest in non-Hermitian, quantum many-body models has steadily grown. Most studies to-date map to traditional quantum spin models with a non-Hermiticity that arises from making the model parameters complex or purely imaginary. Here, we present a new set of models with non-Hermiticity generated by splitting a Hermitian term into two Jordan-normal form parts, and the perturbations are confined to one or two sites. We present exact diagonalization results for the PT-threshold in such models, and provide an analytical approach for understanding the numerical results. Surprisingly, with non-Hermitian potentials confined to two or even a single site, we find a robust PT threshold that seems insensitive to the size of the quantum spin chain. Our results provide a pathway to experimentally feasible non-Hermitian quantum spin chains where the confluence of many-body effects and non-Hermiticity effects can be observed.

Abstract:The {\eta} pseudo PT symmetry theory, denoted by the symbol {\eta}, explores the conditions under which non-Hermitian Hamiltonians can possess real spectra despite the violation of PT symmetry, that is the adjoint of H, denoted H^{†} is expressed as H^{†}=PTHPT. This theory introduces a new symmetry operator, {\eta}=PT{\eta}, which acts on the Hilbert space. The {\eta} pseudo PT symmetry condition requires the Hamiltonian to commute with the {\eta} operator, leading to real eigenvalues. We discuss some general implications of our results for the coupled non hermitian harmonic oscillator.

Abstract:In a recent paper Jones and Mateo used operator techniques to show that the non-Hermitian PT-symmetric wrong-sign quartic Hamiltonian H =1/2 p(2)-gx(4) has the same spectrum as the conventional Hermitian Hamiltonian (H) over tilde = 1/2p(2) + 4gx(4) -root 2gx. Here, this equivalence is demonstrated very simply by means of differential-equation techniques and, more importantly, by means of functional-integration techniques. It is shown that the linear term in the Hermitian Hamiltonian is anomalous; that is, this linear term has no classical analog. The anomaly arises because of the broken parity symmetry of the original non-Hermitian PT-symmetric Hamiltonian. This anomaly in the Hermitian form of a PT-symmetric quartic Hamiltonian is unchanged if a harmonic term is introduced into H. When there is a harmonic term, an immediate physical consequence of the anomaly is the appearance of bound states; if there were no anomaly term, there would be no bound states. Possible extensions of this work to -phi(4) quantum field theory in higher-dimensional space-time are discussed.
Extremely broken generalized $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry

Abstract:We discuss some simple Hückel-like matrix representations of non-Hermitian operators with antiunitary symmetries that include generalized $\mathcal{PT}$ (parity transformation followed by time-reversal) symmetry. One of them exhibits extremely broken antiunitary symmetry (complex eigenvalues for all nontrivial values of the model parameter) because of the degeneracy of the operator in the Hermitian limit. These examples illustrate the effect of point-group symmetry on the spectrum of the non-Hermitian operators. We construct the necessary unitary matrices by means of simple graphical representations of the non-Hermitian operators.

Behavior of eigenvalues in a region of broken-PT symmetry

Abstract:PT-symmetric quantum mechanics began with a study of the Hamiltonian $H=p^2+x^2(ix)^\varepsilon$. When $\varepsilon\geq0$, the eigenvalues of this non-Hermitian Hamiltonian are discrete, real, and positive. This portion of parameter space is known as the region of unbroken PT symmetry. In the region of broken PT symmetry $\varepsilon<0$ only a finite number of eigenvalues are real and the remaining eigenvalues appear as complex-conjugate pairs. The region of unbroken PT symmetry has been studied but the region of broken PT symmetry has thus far been unexplored. This paper presents a detailed numerical and analytical examination of the behavior of the eigenvalues for $-4<\varepsilon<0$. In particular, it reports the discovery of an infinite-order exceptional point at $\varepsilon=-1$, a transition from a discrete spectrum to a partially continuous spectrum at $\varepsilon=-2$, a transition at the Coulomb value $\varepsilon=-3$, and the behavior of the eigenvalues as $\varepsilon$ approaches the conformal limit $\varepsilon=-4$.

Abstract:We prove that in finite dimensions, a Parity-Time (PT)-symmetric Hamiltonian is necessarily pseudo-Hermitian regardless of whether it is diagonalizable or not. This result is different from Mostafazadeh's [J. Math. Phys. 43, 205-214 (2002)]. Result, which requires the Hamiltonian to be diagonalizable. PT-symmetry breaking often occurs at exceptional points where the Hamiltonian is not diagonalizable. Our result implies that PT-symmetry breaking is equivalent to the onset of instabilities of pseudo-Hermitian systems, which was systematically studied by Krein et al. [Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR N.S. 73, 445 (1950)]. In particular, we show that the mechanism of PT-symmetry breaking is the resonance between two eigenmodes with opposite signs of actions.

Abstract:We review recent work on the generalization of PT symmetry. We show that, in addition to PT-symmetric complex potentials, there are also large classes of non-PT-symmetric complex potentials which also feature all-real spectra. In addition, some classes of these non-PT-symmetric potentials allow phase transitions which do or do not go through exceptional points. These non-PT-symmetric potentials are constructed by a variety of methods, such as the symmetry and supersymmetry methods and the soliton theory. A generalization of PT symmetry in multi-dimensions is also reviewed.

Abstract:In this work, $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonians defined on quantum $sl(2, \mathbb R)$ algebras are presented. We study the spectrum of a family of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians written in terms of the generators of the non-standard $U_{z}(sl(2, \mathbb R))$ Hopf algebra deformation of $sl(2, \mathbb R)$. By making use of a particular boson representation of the generators of $U_{z}(sl(2, \mathbb R))$, both the co-product and the commutation relations of the quantum algebra are shown to be invariant under the $\mathcal{PT}$-transformation. In terms of these operators, we construct several finite dimensional $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry Hamiltonians, whose spectrum is analytically obtained for any arbitrary dimension. In particular, we show the appearance of Exceptional Points in the space of model parameters and we discuss the behaviour of the spectrum both in the exact $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry and the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry dynamical phases. As an application, we show that this non-standard quantum algebra can be used to define an effective model Hamiltonian describing accurately the experimental spectra of three-electron hybrid qubits based on asymmetric double quantum dots. Remarkably enough, in this effective model, the deformation parameter $z$ has to be identified with the detuning parameter of the system.

Abstract:A possible method to investigate non-Hermitian Hamiltonians is suggested through finding a Hermitian operator η+ and defining the annihilation and creation operators to be η+ -pseudo-Hermitian adjoint to each other. The operator η+ represents the η+ -pseudo-Hermiticity of Hamiltonians. As an example, a non-Hermitian and non-PT-symmetric Hamiltonian with imaginary linear coordinate and linear momentum terms is constructed and analyzed in detail. The operator η+ is found, based on which, a real spectrum and a positive-definite inner product, together with the probability explanation of wave functions, the orthogonality of eigenstates, and the unitarity of time evolution, are obtained for the non-Hermitian and non-PT-symmetric Hamiltonian. Moreover, this Hamiltonian turns out to be coupled when it is extended to the canonical noncommutative space with noncommutative spatial coordinate operators and noncommutative momentum operators as well. Our method is applicable to the coupled Hamiltonian. Then the first and second order noncommutative corrections of energy levels are calculated, and in particular the reality of energy spectra, the positive-definiteness of inner products, and the related properties (the probability explanation of wave functions, the orthogonality of eigenstates, and the unitarity of time evolution) are found not to be altered by the noncommutativity.
Quantum-Classical Correspondence of Non-Hermitian Symmetry Breaking

Abstract:Real-to-complex spectral transitions and the associated spontaneous symmetry breaking of eigenstates are central to non-Hermitian physics, yet their underlying physical mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we resolve the mystery by employing the complex path integral formalism and developing a generalized Gutzwiller trace formula. These methodologies enable us to establish a universal quantum-classical correspondence that precisely links the real or complex nature of individual energy levels to the symmetry properties of their corresponding semiclassical orbits. Specifically, in systems with a general $\eta$-pseudo-Hermitian symmetry, real energy levels are quantized along periodic orbits that preserve the corresponding classical $S_\eta$ symmetry. In contrast, complex conjugate energy levels arise from semiclassical orbits that individually break the $S_\eta$ symmetry but together form $S_\eta$-symmetric pairs. This framework provides a unified explanation for the spectral behaviors in various continuous non-Hermitian models and for the ${PT}$ transition in two-level systems. Our work uncovers the physical mechanism of non-Hermitian symmetry breaking and introduces a new perspective with broad implications for the control and application of non-Hermitian phenomena.

Asymmetrical Interaction Induced Real Spectra and Exceptional Points in a Non-Hermitian Hamiltonian

Abstract:Non-Hermitian systems with parity-time symmetry have been developed rapidly and hold great promise for future applications. Unlike most existing works considering the symmetry of the free energy terms (e.g., gain-loss system), in this paper, we report that a realizable non-Hermitian interaction between two quantum resonances can also have a real spectrum after the exceptional point. That phenomenon is similar with that in the gain-loss system so that the non-Hermitian interaction can be an excellent substitute for quantum gain. Such a non-Hermitian interaction can be realized in designed optomechanics, and we find that its dynamics are in accordance with those of normal gain system as expected. As examples, the phase transition near the exceptional point and the induced chaos in weak nonlinear coupling are shown and analyzed for an intuitive visual. Our results provide a platform for realizing parity-time symmetry devices and studying properties of non-Hermitian quantum mechanics.
Imaginary eigenvalues of Hermitian Hamiltonian with an inverted potential well and transition to the real spectrum at exceptional point by a non-Hermitian interaction

Abstract:We in this paper study the hermiticity of Hamiltonian and energy spectrum for the SU(1; 1) systems. The Hermitian Hamiltonian can possess imaginary eigenvalues in contrast with the common belief that hermiticity is a suffcient condition for real spectrum. The imaginary eigenvalues are derived in algebraic method with imaginary-frequency boson operators for the Hamiltonian of inverted potential well. Dual sets of mutually orthogonal eigenstates are required corresponding respectively to the complex conjugate eigenvalues. Arbitrary order eigenfunctions seen to be the polynomials of imaginary frequency are generated from the normalized ground-state wave functions, which are spatially non localized. The Hamiltonian including a non-Hermitian interaction term can be converted by similarity transformation to the Hermitian one with an effective potential of reduced slope, which is turnable by the interaction constant. The transformation operator should not be unitary but Hermitian different from the unitary transformation in ordinary quantum mechanics. The effective potential vanishes at a critical value of coupling strength called the exceptional point, where all eigenstates are degenerate with zero eigenvalue and transition from imaginary to real spectra appears. The SU(1; 1) generator $\widehat{S}_{z}$ with real eigenvalues determined by the commutation relation of operators, however, is non-Hermitian in the realization of imaginay-frequency boson operators. The classical counterpart of the quantum Hamiltonian with non-Hermitian interaction is a complex function of the canonical variables. It becomes by the canonical transformation of variables a real function indicating exactly the one to one quantum-classical correspondence of Hamiltonians.

Real-potential-driven Anti- PT -Symmetry Breaking in Non-Hermitian Su–Schrieffer–Heeger Model

Abstract:Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with anti- PT symmetry show distinct discrepancies compared to PT -symmetric systems. Here we investigate the non-Hermitian Su–Schrieffer–Heeger (SSH) model and reveal the interplay between anti- PT symmetry and different topological phases, in which the anti- PT symmetry is triggered by introducing real chemical potential and imaginary nearest-neighbor hopping. Three types of anti- PT -symmetric SSH models with different on-site configurations are investigated, and the effect of each on-site configuration on the energy spectrum of system is analyzed and discussed. We find that the type of on-site configuration affects the energy spectrum of the same topological region significantly and each on-site configuration has distinguishable impacts on the energy spectra of different topological regions. Moreover, the spontaneous anti- PT -symmetry-breaking transitions undergone in both of the topologically trivial and nontrivial regions are also clarified. Furthermore, we address the corresponding eigenstates of some specific eigenvalues and some interesting localized phenomena are observed. Our results enrich the study of non-Hermitian topological phases and broaden the understanding of anti- PT -symmetric systems.
Hilbert space fragmentation imposed real spectrum of non-Hermitian systems

Abstract:We show that constraints imposed by strong Hilbert space fragmentation (HSF) along with the presence of certain global symmetries can ensure the reality of eigenspectra of non-Hermitian quantum systems; such a reality cannot be guaranteed by global symmetries alone. We demonstrate this insight for two interacting finite chains, namely the fermionic Nelson-Hatano and the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger models, none of which has a $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. We show analytically that strong HSF and real spectrum are both consequences of the same dynamical constraints in the limit of large interaction, provided the systems have sufficient global symmetries. We also show that a local equal-time correlation function can detect the many-body exceptional point at a finite critical interaction strength above which the eigenspectrum is real.
