Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the broken $cal PT$-symmetric hamiltonians and the weak values. It was showed that a broken $cal PT$-symmetric quantum system can be simulated by weak measurement in a large conventional quantum system. Moreover, such a paradigm reduces to the embedding paradigm when the system is unbroken $cal PT$-symmetric.

Abstract:A physical requirement on the Hamiltonian operator in quantum mechanics is that it must generate real energy spectrum and unitary time evolution. While the Hamiltonians are Dirac Hermitian in conventional quantum mechanics, they observe PT-symmetry in PT-symmetric quantum theory. The embedding property was first studied by Günther and Samsonov [1] to visualise the evolution of unbroken PT-symmetric Hamiltonians on C2 by Hermitian Hamiltonians on C4. This paper investigates the properties of PT-symmetric quantum systems including the embedding property. We provide a full characterization of the embedding property in the general case and show that only unbroken PT-symmetric quantum systems admit this property in a finite dimensional space. Furthermore, utilizing this property, we establish a physically realizable simulation process of the unbroken PT-symmetric Hamiltonians. An observation that the unbroken PT-symmetric quantum systems can be viewed as open systems in the conventional quantum mechanics accounts for the consistency of PT-symmetric quantum theory.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate $\cal PT$-symmetric quantum mechanics in the view of superposition and coherence theory. The important connections between the theories are discussed. It is argued that $\cal PT$-symmetric quantum systems are endowed with some stationary superposition or superposition-free property. A physical interpretation of $\eta$-inner product is given, showing the difference between broken and unbroken $\cal PT$-symmetric quantum systems.
Influence of Weak Measurement on Uncertainty Relations in a Quantum Dissipative System

Abstract:We investigate the influence of weak measurement on the quantum-memory-assisted entropic uncertainty relation and quantum speed limit time in a quantum dissipative system by making use of the hierarchical equations of motion method. It is demonstrated that the weak measurement and measurement reversal can suppress the entropic uncertainty during the evolution of the system, and we find a periodical crossover of the quantum speed limit time for different weak measurement strengths, which disappears when increasing the coupling strength. Similar influence of the weak measurement on uncertainty relations is then explored at the finite temperature. We also consider the effect of the counter-rotating-wave term and show that the rotating-wave approximation is an applicable approximation when studying quantum speed limit time but not appropriate when investigating the quantum-memory-assisted entropic uncertainty relation. Abstract: The $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric non-Hermitian systems have been widely studied and explored both in theory and in experiment these years due to various interesting features. In this work, we focus on the dynamical features of a triple-qubit system, one of which evolves under local $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonian. A new kind of abnormal dynamic pattern in the entropy evolution process is identified, which presents a parameter-dependent stable state, determined by the non-Hermiticity of Hamiltonian in the broken phase of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry. The entanglement and mutual information of a two-body subsystem can increase beyond the initial values, which do not exist in the Hermitian and two-qubit $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems. Moreover, an experimental demonstration of the stable states in non-Hermitian system with non-zero entropy and entanglement is realized on a four-qubit quantum simulator with nuclear spins. Our work reveals the distinctive dynamic features in the triple-qubit $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system and paves the way for practical quantum simulation of multi-party non-Hermitian system on quantum computers.

Abstract:Since the realization of quantum systems described by non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with parity-time (PT) symmetry, interest in non-Hermitian, quantum many-body models has steadily grown. Most studies to-date map to traditional quantum spin models with a non-Hermiticity that arises from making the model parameters complex or purely imaginary. Here, we present a new set of models with non-Hermiticity generated by splitting a Hermitian term into two Jordan-normal form parts, and the perturbations are confined to one or two sites. We present exact diagonalization results for the PT-threshold in such models, and provide an analytical approach for understanding the numerical results. Surprisingly, with non-Hermitian potentials confined to two or even a single site, we find a robust PT threshold that seems insensitive to the size of the quantum spin chain. Our results provide a pathway to experimentally feasible non-Hermitian quantum spin chains where the confluence of many-body effects and non-Hermiticity effects can be observed.

Non-standard quantum algebras and finite dimensional $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems

Abstract:In this work, $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonians defined on quantum $sl(2, \mathbb R)$ algebras are presented. We study the spectrum of a family of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians written in terms of the generators of the non-standard $U_{z}(sl(2, \mathbb R))$ Hopf algebra deformation of $sl(2, \mathbb R)$. By making use of a particular boson representation of the generators of $U_{z}(sl(2, \mathbb R))$, both the co-product and the commutation relations of the quantum algebra are shown to be invariant under the $\mathcal{PT}$-transformation. In terms of these operators, we construct several finite dimensional $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry Hamiltonians, whose spectrum is analytically obtained for any arbitrary dimension. In particular, we show the appearance of Exceptional Points in the space of model parameters and we discuss the behaviour of the spectrum both in the exact $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry and the broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry dynamical phases. As an application, we show that this non-standard quantum algebra can be used to define an effective model Hamiltonian describing accurately the experimental spectra of three-electron hybrid qubits based on asymmetric double quantum dots. Remarkably enough, in this effective model, the deformation parameter $z$ has to be identified with the detuning parameter of the system.

Non-Hermitian quantum walks and non-Markovianity: the coin-position interaction

Abstract:A $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric, non-Hermitian Hamiltonian in the $\mathcal{PT}$-unbroken regime can lead to unitary dynamics under the appropriate choice of the Hilbert space. The Hilbert space is determined by a Hamiltonian-compatible inner product map on the underlying vector space, facilitated by a ``metric operator". A more traditional method, however, involves treating the evolution as open system dynamics, and the state is constructed through normalization at each time step. In this work, we present a comparative study of the two methods of constructing the reduced dynamics of a system evolving under a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonian. Our system is a one-dimensional quantum walk with the spin and position degrees of freedom forming its two subsystems. We compare the information flow between the subsystems under the two methods. We find that under the metric formalism, a power law decay of the information backflow to the subsystem gives a clear indication of the transition from $\mathcal{PT}$-unbroken to the broken phase. This is unlike the information backflow under the normalized state method. We also note that even though non-Hermiticity models open system dynamics, pseudo-Hermiticity can increase entanglement between the subsystem in the metric Hilbert space, thus indicating that pseudo-Hermiticity cases can be seen as a resource in quantum mechanics.

Abstract:The theory of PT-symmetry describes the non-hermitian Hamiltonian with real energy levels, which means that the Hamiltonian H is invariant neither under parity operator P , nor under time reversal operator T , \begin{document}$ PTH = H $\end{document} . It originated from the Hamiltonian is real and symmetric is not a necessary condition for guarantee the fundamental axioms of quantum mechanics: real energy levels and unitary of the time evolution. The theory of PT-symmetry plays a significant role in the quantum physics and quantum information science. Where the problem that how to describe PT-symmetry of Hamiltonian was focused on deeply. In the paper, we propose the definition of operator F based on the PT-symmetry theory and the normalized eigenfunction of Hamiltonian. Then we give the first description of the PT-symmetry of Hamiltonian in dimensionless cases after finding the features of commutator and anti-commutator of operator \begin{document}$ CPT $\end{document} and operator F . Furthermore, we discover this method also can quantify the PT-symmetry of Hamiltonian in dimensionless cases. \begin{document}$ I(CPT,F)=\|[CPT,F]\|^{CPT} $\end{document} represents the part of PT-symmetry broken, and \begin{document}$ J(CPT,F)=\|\{CPT,F\}\|^{CPT} $\end{document} represents the part of PT-symmetry. If \begin{document}$ ReF = 0 $\end{document} it implies that Hamiltonian H is PT-asymmetry, but it is a sufficient condition, not necessary. The later is easier to operate in the experiment, but the study conditions are tighter, and it further requires that \begin{document}$ CPT\phi_n(x)=\phi_n(x) $\end{document} . If we only pay attention to whether PT-symmetry is broken, use the latter method is simpler. The former method is perhaps better to quantify the PT-symmetry broken part and the part of local PT-symmetry.

Abstract:A topological phase can often be represented by a corresponding wavefunction (exact eigenstate of a model Hamiltonian) that has a higher underlying symmetry than necessary. When the symmetry is explicitly broken in the Hamiltonian, the model wavefunction fails to account for the change due to the lack of a variational parameter. Here we exemplify the case by an integer quantum Hall system with anisotropic interaction. We demonstrate the recovery of the variational parameter in a single-mode approximation, which is consistent with the recently proposed geometric consideration of the quantum Hall phases.

Abstract:We aim to address the following question: if we start with a quantum state with a spontaneously broken higher-form symmetry, what is the fate of the system under weak local quantum measurements? We demonstrate that under certain conditions, a phase transition can be driven by weak measurements, which suppresses the spontaneous breaking of the 1-form symmetry and weakens the 1-form symmetry charge fluctuation. We analyze the nature of the transitions employing the tool of duality, and we demonstrate that some of the transitions driven by weak measurement enjoy a line of fixed points with self-duality.

Broadening the scope of weak quantum measurements I: A single particle accurately measured yet left superposed

Abstract:Weak measurement is unique in enabling measurements of non-commuting operators as well as otherwise-undetectable peculiar phenomena predicted by the Two-State-Vector-Formalism (TSVF). This article, the first in two parts, explores novel applications of weak measurement. We first revisit the basic principles of quantum measurement with the aid of the Michelson interferometer. Weak measurement is then introduced in a simple visualized manner by a specific choice of the reflecting mirror's position and momentum uncertainties. Having introduced the method, we proceed to its refinement for a single particle. We consider a photon going back and forth inside the interferometer, oscillating between a superposed and a localized state, while subjected to alternating strong and weak measurements. This cyclic process enables directly measuring both the photon's position ("which-path") and momentum (interference), without disturbing either. An alternative explanation of this result, not invoking weak values, is thoroughly considered and shown to be at odds with the experimental data. Finally a practical application of this experiment is demonstrated, where a single photon measures the various transmission coefficients of a multiport beam-splitter yet remains superposed. This method is then generalized to measurement of the wave-function itself, performed again on a single particle.

Weak and Strong Measurement of a Qubit Using a Switching-Based Detector

Abstract:We analyze the operation of a switching-based detector that probes a qubit's observable that does not commute with the qubit's Hamiltonian, leading to a nontrivial interplay between the measurement and free-qubit dynamics. In order to obtain analytical results and develop intuitive understanding of the different possible regimes of operation, we use a theoretical model where the detector is a quantum two-level system that is constantly monitored by a macroscopic system. We analyze how to interpret the outcome of the measurement and how the state of the qubit evolves while it is measured. We find that the answers to the above questions depend on the relation between the different parameters in the problem. In addition to the traditional strong-measurement regime, we identify a number of regimes associated with weak qubit-detector coupling. An incoherent detector whose switching time is measurable with high accuracy can provide high-fidelity information, but the measurement basis is determined only upon switching of the detector. An incoherent detector whose switching time can be known only with low accuracy provides a measurement in the qubit's energy eigenbasis with reduced measurement fidelity. A coherent detector measures the qubit in its energy eigenbasis and, under certain conditions, can provide high-fidelity information.
Quantum measurements as weighted symmetry breaking processes: the hidden measurement perspective

Abstract:The purpose of the present note is twofold. Firstly, we highlight the similarities between the ontologies of Kastner's possibilist transactional interpretation (PTI) of quantum mechanics - an extension of Cramer's transactional interpretation - and the authors' hidden-measurement interpretation (HMI). Secondly, we observe that although a weighted symmetry breaking (WSB) process was proposed in the PTI, to explain the actualization of incipient transactions, no specific mechanism was actually provided to explain why the weights of such symmetry breaking are precisely those given by the Born rule. In other terms, PTI, similarly to decoherence theory, doesn't explain a quantum measurement in a complete way, but just the transition from a pure state to a fully reduced density matrix state. On the other hand, the recently derived extended Bloch representation (EBR) - a specific implementation the HMI - precisely provides such missing piece of explanation, i.e., a qualitative description of the WSB as a process of actualization of hidden measurement-interactions and, more importantly, a quantitative prediction of the values of the associated weights that is compatible with the Born rule of probabilistic assignment. Therefore, from the PTI viewpoint, the EBR provide the missing link for a complete description of a quantum measurement. However, EBR is in a sense more general than PTI, as it does not rely on the specific notion of transaction, and therefore remains compatible with other physical mechanisms that could be at the origin of the measurement-interactions.

Decomposing qubit positive-operator valued measurements into continuous destructive weak measurements

Abstract:It has been shown that any generalized measurement can be decomposed into a sequence of weak measurements corresponding to a stochastic process. However, the weak measurements may require almost arbitrary unitaries, which are unlikely to be realized by any real measurement device. Furthermore, many measurement processes are destructive, like photon counting procedures that terminate once all photons are consumed. One cannot expect to have full control of the evolution of a state under such destructive measurements, and the possible unitaries allow only a limited set of weak measurements. In this paper, we consider a qubit model of destructive weak measurements, which is a toy version of an optical cavity, in which the state of an electromagnetic field mode inside the cavity leaks out and is measured destructively while the vacuum state |0> leaks in to the cavity. At long times, the state of the qubit inevitably evolves to be |0>, and the only available control is the choice of measurement on the external ancilla system. Surprisingly, this very limited model can still perform an arbitrary projective measurement on the qubit in any basis, where the probability of getting an outcome satisfies the usual Born rule. Combining this method with probabilistic post processing, the result can be extended to any generalized measurement with commuting POVM elements. This implies, among other results, that any two-outcome POVM on a qubit can be decomposed into a sequence of destructive weak measurements by this restricted measurement device.

Abstract:Comprehensive study on parity-time (PT) symmetric systems demonstrates the novel properties and innovative application of non-Hermitian physics in recent years. In the quantum regime, PT symmetric physics exhibits unique quantum dynamical behaviors such as spontaneous state-distinguishability oscillation. However, the construction and control of a PT symmetric quantum system are still challenging, that and restrict the experimental investigation of PT symmetric quantum nature and application. In this Letter, we propose and construct a recycling-structure PT symmetric quantum simulator for the first time, which can effectively simulate the discrete-time dynamical process of a PT symmetric quantum system in both unbroken and broken phases, to be different from our previous work [J.-S. Tang, et al., Nat. Photonics 10, 642 (2016)]. We investigate the dynamical features of quantum state distinguishability based on the PT symmetric simulator. Our results demonstrate the novel PT symmetric quantum dynamics characterized by the periodical oscillation of state distinguishability in the unbroken phase, and the monotonic decay of that in the broken phase. This work also provides a practical experimental platform for the future intensive study of PT symmetric quantum dynamics.
Demystifying weak measurements

Abstract:A large literature has grown up around the proposed use of 'weak measurements' (i.e., unsharp measurements followed by post-selection) to allegedly provide information about hidden ontological features of quantum systems. This paper attempts to clarify the fact that 'weak measurements' involve strong (projective) measurements on one (pointer) member of an entangled system. The only thing 'weak' about such measurements is that the correlation established via the entanglement does not correspond to eigenstates of the 'weakly measured observable' for the remaining component system(s) subject to the weak measurement. All observed statistics are straightforwardly and easily predicted by standard quantum mechanics. Specifically, it is noted that measurement of the pointer steers the remaining degree(s) of freedom into new states with new statistical properties-constituting a non-trivial (even if generally small) disturbance. In addition, standard quantum mechanics readily allows us to conditionalize on a final state if we choose, so the 'post-selection' that features prominently in time-symmetric formulations is also equipment from standard quantum theory. Assertions in the literature that weak measurements leave a system negligibly disturbed, and/or that standard quantum theory is cumbersome for computing the predicted measurement results, are therefore unsupportable, and ontological claims based on such assertions need to be critically reassessed.

Minimally-disturbing Heisenberg-Weyl symmetric measurements using hard-core collisions of Schrödinger particles

Abstract:In a previous paper we have presented a general scheme for the implementation of symmetric generalized measurements (POVMs) on a quantum computer. This scheme is based on representation theory of groups and methods to decompose matrices that intertwine two representations. We extend this scheme in such a way that the measurement is minimally disturbing, i.e., it changes the state vector \ket{\Psi} of the system to \sqrt{\Pi} \ket{\Psi} where \Pi is the positive operator corresponding to the measured result. Using this method, we construct quantum circuits for measurements with Heisenberg-Weyl symmetry. A continuous generalization leads to a scheme for optimal simultaneous measurements of position and momentum of a Schr"odinger particle moving in one dimension such that the outcomes satisfy \Delta x \Delta p \geq \hbar. The particle to be measured collides with two probe particles, one for the position and the other for the momentum measurement. The position and momentum resolution can be tuned by the entangled joint state of the probe particles which is also generated by a collision with hard-core potential. The parameters of the POVM can then be controlled by the initial widths of the wave functions of the probe particles. We point out some formal similarities and differences to simultaneous measurements of quadrature amplitudes in quantum optics.

Abstract:PT-symmetric theory is developed to extend quantum mechanics to a complex region, but it wins its great success first in classical systems, for example, optical waveguides and electric circuits, etc., because there are so many counterintuitive phenomena and striking applications, including unidirectional light transport, PT-enhanced sensors (one kind of exceptional-point-based sensor), and wireless power transfer. However, these phenomena and applications are mostly based on the ability to approach a PT-symmetric broken region, which makes it difficult to transfer them to the quantum regime, since the broken quantum PT-symmetric system has not been constructed effectively, until recently several methods have been raised. Here, we construct a quantum PT-symmetric system assisted by weak measurement, which can effectively transit from the unbroken region to the broken region. The full energy spectrum including the real and imaginary parts is directly measured using weak values. Furthermore, based on the ability of approaching a broken region, we for the first time translate the previously mentioned PT-enhanced sensor into the quantum version, and investigate its various features that are associated to the optimal conditions for sensitivity enhancement. In this experiment, we obtain an enhancement of 8.856 times over the conventional Hermitian sensor. Moreover, by separately detecting the real and imaginary parts of energy splitting, we can derive the additional information of the direction of perturbations. Our work paves the way of leading classical interesting PT phenomena and applications to their quantum counterparts. More generally, since the PT system is a subset of non-Hermitian systems, our work will be also helpful in the studies of general exception point in the quantum regime.
