Abstract:We sketch and emphasize the automatic emergence of a quantum potential Q in e.g. classical WDW type equations upon inserting a (Bohmian) complex wave function. The interpretation of Q in terms of momentum fluctuations via Fisher information and entropy ideas is discussed along with the essentially forced role of the amplitude squared as a probability density. We also review the constructions of Padmanabhan connecting entropy and the Einstein equations.

Abstract:We show that the geometric phase of Levy-Leblond arises from a low of parallel transport for wave functions and point out that this phase belongs to a new class of geometric phases due to the presence of a quantum potential.

Abstract:What is striking about de Broglie's foundational work on wave–particle dualism is the role played by pseudo-Riemannian geometry in his early thinking. While exploring a fully covariant description of the Klein–Gordon equation, he was led to the revolutionary idea that a variable rest mass was essential. DeWitt later explained that in order to obtain a covariant quantum Hamiltonian, one must supplement the classical Hamiltonian with an additional energy ħ2Q from which the quantum potential emerges, a potential that Berry has recently shown also arises in classical wave optics. In this paper, we show how these ideas emerge from an essentially geometric structure in which the information normally carried by the wave function is contained within the algebraic description of the geometry itself, within an element of a minimal left ideal. We establish the fundamental importance of conformal symmetry, in which rescaling of the rest mass plays a vital role. Thus, we have the basis for a radically new theory of quantum phenomena based on the process of mass-energy flow.

Abstract:The geometry of Quantum Mechanics in the context of uncertainty and complementarity, and probability is explored. We extend the discussion of geometry of uncertainty relations in wider perspective. Also, we discuss the geometry of probability in Quantum Mechanics and its interpretations. We give yet another interpretation to the notion of Faraday lines and loops as the locus of probability flow. Also, the possibilities of visualization of spectra of area operators by means of classical geometric forms and conventional Quantum Mechanics are explored.

Abstract:The present work is a review of a series of papers, published in the last ten years, comprising an attempt to find a suitable avenue from geometry to quantum. It shows clearly that, any non-symmetric geometry admits some built-in quantum features. These features disappear completely once the geometry becomes symmetric (torsion-less). It is shown that, torsion of space-time plays an important role in both geometry and physics. It interacts with the spin of the moving particle and with its charge. The first interaction, {\bf{Spin-Torsion Interaction}}, has been used to overcome the discrepancy in the results of the COW-experiment. The second interaction, {\bf{Charge-Torsion Interaction}}, is similar to the Aharonov-Bohm effect. As a byproduct, a new version of Absolute Parallelism (AP) geometry, the Parameterized Absolute Parallelism (PAP) geometry, has been established and developed. This version can be used to construct field theories that admit some quantum features. Riemannian geometry and conventional AP-geometry are special cases of PAP-geometry.

Abstract:The description of a closed quantum system is extended with the identification of an underlying substructure in which an expanded formulation of dynamics in the Heisenberg picture is given. Between measurements a ``state point" moves in an underlying multi-dimensional complex, projective space with constant velocity determined by the quantum state vector. Following a measurement, the point changes direction and moves with new constant velocity along one of several possible new orthogonal paths, with probabilities determined by Born's Rule. A possible generalization to a Riemannian substructure is speculated upon, suggesting an unexpected interaction with the background gravitational field.

Abstract:A model for the interpretation of spacetime as a Weyl geometry is proposed, based on the hypothesis that a system moves on any given path with a probability which is inversely proportional to the resulting change in length of the system. The results of physical measurements are calculated as the product of Weyl-conjugate gauge-dependent probabilities for the detection of conjugate objects. Each probability, expressed as a Wiener integral, is the Green's function for a diffusion equation. If the line integral of the Weyl field equals the action functional divided by ℏ this equation provides the stochastic equivalent of the Schrödinger equation, with expanding and contracting states replacing the oscillating states of standard quantum theory. These dilatations are not directly measurable within the theory, but the rates of expansion and contraction are. We establish the classical limit of the theory by proving that the most general form of the Weyl field which gives an extremum of the action is restricted to be of a special form. Particles obeying the equations of motion for these extremal Weyl fields experience no measurable dilatation. However, the Weyl field itself is classically detectable, and gives a correct description of the electromagnetic interaction of a point particle.

Abstract:We show that Quantum Mechanics can be interpreted as a modification of the Euclidean nature of 3-d space into a particular Weyl affine space which we call Q-wis. This is proved using the Bohm-de Broglie causal formulation of Quantum Mechanics. In the Q-wis geometry, the length of extended objects changes from point to point. In our proposed geometrical formulation, deformation of the standard rulers used to measure physical distances are in the core of quantum effects.

Abstract:We show that the standard Heisenberg algebra of quantum mechanics admits a noncommutative differential calculus Ω1 depending on the Hamiltonian p2/2m + V(x), and a flat quantum connection ∇ with torsion such that a previous quantum-geometric formulation of flow along autoparallel curves (or “geodesics”) is exactly Schrödinger’s equation. The connection ∇ preserves a non-symmetric quantum metric given by the canonical symplectic structure lifted to a rank (0, 2) tensor on the extended phase space where we adjoin a time variable. We also apply the same approach to obtain a novel flow generated by the Klein–Gordon operator on Minkowski spacetime with a background electromagnetic field, by formulating quantum “geodesics” on the relativistic Heisenberg algebra with proper time for the external geodesic parameter. Examples include quantum geodesics that look like a relativistic free particle wave packet and a hydrogen-like atom.

Abstract:Geometric quantum mechanics, through its differential-geometric underpinning, provides additional tools of analysis and interpretation that bring quantum mechanics closer to classical mechanics: state spaces in both are equipped with symplectic geometry. This opens the door to revisiting foundational questions and issues, such as the nature of quantum entropy, from a geometric perspective. Central to this is the concept of geometric quantum state -- the probability measure on a system's space of pure states. This space's continuity leads us to introduce two analysis tools, inspired by Renyi's information theory, to characterize and quantify fundamental properties of geometric quantum states: the quantum information dimension that is the rate of geometric quantum state compression and the dimensional geometric entropy that monitors information stored in quantum states. We recount their classical definitions, information-theoretic meanings, and physical interpretations, and adapt them to quantum systems via the geometric approach. We then explicitly compute them in various examples and classes of quantum system. We conclude commenting on future directions for information in geometric quantum mechanics.

Unfinished History and Paradoxes of Quantum Potential. I. Non-Relativistic Origin, History and Paradoxes

Abstract:The first of the two related papers analising and explaining the origin, manifestations and parodoxical features of the quantum potential (QP) from the non-relativistic and relativistic point of view. QP arises in the quantum Hamiltonian, under various procedures of quantization of the systems whose Hamilton functions are the positive-definite quadratic forms in momenta with coefficients depending on the coordinates in (n-dimensional) configurational space (natural systems). Owing to the Riemannian structure thus introduced in the space, the result of quantization is considered as quantum mecanics (QM) of a particle. Contradiction of QP to the Principles of General Covariance and Equivalence is discussed. It is found that actually the historically first Hilbert space based quantization by E. Schrödinger (1926), after revision in the modern framework of QM, also leads to QP in the form that B. DeWitt had been found 26 years later. Efforts to avoid QP or reduce its drawbacks are discussed. The general conclusion is that some form of QP and a violation of the principles of general relativity induced by it are apparently inevitable in the non-relativistic QM. It is shown also that Feynman quantization singles out two versions of QP, which both determine two bi-scalar propagators which fix two different algorithms of path integral calculation. In the accompanying paper under the same general title and the subtitle "The Relativistic Point of View", relation of the non-relativistic QP to the quantum theory of the scalar field non-minimally coupled to the curved space-time metric is considered.

Abstract:Quantum geometry defines the phase and amplitude distances between quantum states. The phase distance is characterized by the Berry curvature and thus relates to topological phenomena. The significance of the full quantum geometry, including the amplitude distance characterized by the quantum metric, has started to receive attention in the last few years. Various quantum transport and interaction phenomena have been found to be critically influenced by quantum geometry. For example, quantum geometry allows counterintuitive flow of supercurrent in a flat band where single electrons are immobile. In this Essay, I will discuss my view of the important open problems and future applications of this research topic and will try to inspire the reader to come up with further ideas. At its best, quantum geometry can open a new chapter in band theory and lead to breakthroughs as transformative as room-temperature superconductivity. However, first, more experiments directly showing the effect of quantum geometry are needed. We also have to integrate quantum geometry analysis in our most advanced numerical methods. Further, the ramifications of quantum geometry should be studied in a wider range, including electric and electromagnetic responses and interaction phenomena in free- and correlated-electron materials, bosonic systems, optics, and other fields.

Abstract:Geometrical methods in quantum information are very promising for both providing technical tools and intuition into difficult control or optimization problems. Moreover, they are of fundamental importance in connecting pure geometrical theories, like GR, to quantum mechanics, like in the AdS/CFT correspondence. In this paper, we first make a survey of the most important settings in which geometrical methods have proven useful to quantum information theory. Then, we lay down a general framework for an action principle for quantum resources like entanglement, coherence, and anti-flatness. We discuss the case of a two-qubit system.

Abstract:Starting from the working hypothesis that both physics and the corresponding mathematics and in particular geometry have to be described by means of discrete concepts on the Planck-scale, one of the many problems one has to face in this enterprise is to find the discrete protoforms of the building blocks of our ordinary continuum physics and mathematics living on a smooth background, and perhaps more importantly find a way how this continuum limit emerges from the mentioned discrete structure. We model this underlying substratum as a structurally dynamic cellular network (basically a generalisation of a cellular automaton). We regard these continuum concepts and continuum spacetime in particular as being emergent, coarse-grained and derived relative to this underlying erratic and disordered microscopic substratum, which we would like to call quantum geometry and which is expected to play by quite different rules, namely generalized cellular automaton rules. A central role in our analysis is played by a geometric renormalization group which creates (among other things) a kind of sparse translocal network of correlations between the points in classical continuous space-time and underlies, in our view, such mysterious phenomena as holography and the black hole entropy-area law. The same point of view holds for quantum theory which we also regard as a low-energy, coarse-grained continuum theory, being emergent from something more fundamental. In this paper we review our approach and compare it to the quantum graphity framework.

Abstract:International Journal of Modern Physics D, Ahead of Print. General relativity (GR) in its current classical formulation is fundamentally different from quantum mechanics (QM). We argue that the everlasting battle for exploring and understanding the Universe and then privileging a consistent perception of reality is therefore awaiting a consolidator rather than a conqueror. This should be capable of either unifying these two different benchmarks or at least bringing one closer to another! The latter conservatively describes the consolidating quantum geometric approach, which combines generalization of QM to relativistic energies and gravitational fields and continuous Riemann to discretized Finsler geometry. We found that this type of quantum geometric approach seems to unveil additional quantum-conditioned spacetime curvatures (QCC), sources of gravitation), which obviously could not be disclosed in Einstein's GR, especially at large scales. This study introduces analytical and numerical analyses of QCC. We conclude that (i) nature and characteristics of QCC are fundamentally distinguishable from the classical GR's spacetime curvatures, (ii) the QCC are intrinsic, real and essential, i.e. not artifacts that would be removed in a certain coordinate transformation and (iii) the magnitude of QCC are nonnegligible to be underestimated. We also conclude that the spacetime at quantum scales seems to be no longer smooth or continuous so that the proposed quantum geometric approach would be regarded as a novel mathematical framework for the emergence of quantum gravity. Last but not least, a maximal proper force is predicted as a new physical constant, which is responsible for the maximal and gravitational acceleration of a quantum particle that would live in the emerged spacetime curvatures. Thereby, the quantum geometric nature of QCC can be accessed and assessed.

Abstract:This is a non-standard exposition of the main notions of quantum mechanics and quantum field theory including some recent results. It is based on the algebraic approach where the starting point is a star-algebra and on the geometric approach where the starting point is a convex set of states. Standard formulas for quantum probabilities are derived from decoherence. This derivation allows us to go beyond quantum theory in the geometric approach. Particles are defined as elementary excitations of the ground state (and quasiparticles as elementary excitations of any translation invariant state). The conventional scattering matrix does not work for quasiparticles (and even for particles if the theory does not have particle interpretation). The analysis of scattering in these cases is based on the notion of inclusive scattering matrix, closely related to inclusive cross-sections. It is proven that the conventional scattering matrix can be expressed in terms of Green functions (LSZ formula) and the inclusive scattering matrix can be expressed in terms of generalized Green functions that appear in the Keldysh formalism of non-equilibrium statistical physics. The derivation of the expression of the evolution operator and other physical quantities in terms of functional integrals is based on the notion of the symbol of an operator; these arguments can be applied also in the geometric approach. The notion of inclusive scattering matrix makes sense in the geometric approach (but it seems that one cannot give a definition of the conventional scattering matrix in this situation). The geometric approach is used to show that quantum mechanics and its generalizations can be considered as classical theories where our devices can measure only a part of observables.

Quantum Probability Geometrically Realized in Projective Space

Abstract:The principal goal of this paper is to pass all quantum probability formulas to the projective space associated to the complex Hilbert space of a given quantum system, providing a more complete geometrization of quantum theory. Quantum events have consecutive and conditional probabilities, which have been used in the author's previous work to clarify 'collapse' and to generalize the concept of entanglement by incorporating it into quantum probability theory. In this way all of standard textbook quantum theory can be understood as a geometric theory of projective subspaces without any special role for the zero-dimensional projective subspaces, which are also called pure states. The upshot is that quantum theory is the probability theory of projective subspaces, or equivalently, of quantum events. For the sake of simplicity the ideas are developed here in the context of a type I factor, but comments will be given about how to adopt this approach to more general von Neumann algebras.
