Abstract:One of the most significant challenges of luminescent materials is the thermal quenching (TQ) at high temperature. Understanding the correlation between crystal structure variation and photoluminescence (PL) quenching is significant to achieve anti‐thermal quenching (anti‐TQ) phosphors. Herein, we unveil a universal principle governing switchable TQ and anti‐TQ behaviors in zero‐dimensional (0D) organic‐inorganic hybrid manganese bromides. We observed an abnormal anti‐TQ phenomenon when phosphor is excited in the valley of PL excitation (PLE) spectrum (indirect excitation) while TQ phenomenon is observed when excited in the peak and shoulder positions of PLE. Our findings demonstrate that PL intensity is influenced by two variable parameters: the effective Mn‐ligand distance and the shortest Mn‐Mn distance. These excitation‐dependent TQ and anti‐TQ behaviors originate from the relative changes in these distances, which modulate the competition between radiative and nonradiative recombination rates, as evidenced at the molecular level by molecular dynamics simulation. X‐ray activated radioluminescence (RL) also exhibits anti‐TQ behavior, which is analogous to the indirect excitation of PL evolution when excited at PLE valley. These insights bridge the gap between PL and RL properties in 0D manganese halides and offer potential avenues for developing advanced anti‐TQ phosphors, efficient LEDs, and high‐performance scintillators.

Abstract:Red phosphor is indispensable to achieve warm white light in the white light diode (WLED) application. However, the current red phosphors suffer from high cost and harsh synthesis conditions. In this study, an oxide-based rare-earth-free red-emitting phosphor Li3Mg2NbO6:Mn4+ (LMN:Mn4+) has been successfully synthesized by a simple solid-state reaction method. The relationship between crystal structure and luminescence was investigated in detail. The site occupancy of the doping Mn4+ ion in the LMN host has been discussed from the point of bond valence sum. How the coordination environment of doping Mn4+ affects the energy level of doping Mn4+ ion has been illustrated via the Tanabe-Sugano energy-level diagram. Moreover, warm white light has been obtained using LMN:Mn4+ as compensator to the YAG:Ce3+.

Abstract:In this study, a significant improvement of deep-red luminescence was successfully achieved via the substitution approach in the Mn4+-activated Ca14-xKxAl10Zn6O35 phosphor. The optimal Mn4+ doping level x was determined by studying luminescence concentration quenching behavior. The measured photoluminescence (PL) spectrum showed five distinct vibronic structures with the main peak centered at 712 nm. A theoretical simulation work was conducted for comparison, and the predominant phonon mode involving in the vibronic transition process was revealed. From the temperature-dependent PL spectra, an abnormal luminescence enhancement was observed at the temperature rising from T=100 to 340 K, and the underlying phonon-assisted luminescence mechanism was theoretically disclosed. Finally, we studied the temperature-dependent luminescence lifetime, and the primary phonon energy in the vibronic behavior was identified from the fitting work.
Unveiling the Phonon Effect on the Narrow-Band Deep-Red Emission from Solution-Combustion Synthesized Mn4+ Doped Cayalo4 Microcrystals

Abstract:Fundamental understanding the effect of phonon vibration on the optical properties of phosphors especially the spectral evolution and dynamics of excited-states is of significant importance for their optoelectronic applications. Herein, we report a unique solution-combustion synthesis of Mn4+ doped CaYAlO4 microcrystals and demonstrate a narrow-band deep-red emission. Through the simulation of low-temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and theoretical fitting on temperature-dependent PL intensity at T<400 K, we obtained a dominant phonon energy (40 meV) involving in the vibronic coupling process, with a small Huang-Rhys factor of S=0.68. By combining with the measured lifetime evolution, luminescence thermal quenching effect was particularly attributed to four-dominant phonon interaction with Mn4+ electronic states. More intriguingly, the deviation of luminescence decay curve from the single-exponential mode at T>400 K suggests the occurrence of two radiative transitions, as a result of ionically thermal excitation to the second excited state of 4T2. These findings provide not only a general approach to identify the predominant phonon vibration, but also deep insights into the effect of weak electron-phonon coupling on PL properties of solid-state luminescent.

Abstract:The variation of the crystalline structure presented in XRD and the significant shift in the excitation absorption band of photoluminescence spectroscopy indicate that Li+ ions tend to occupy Zn2+ sites. An intriguing phenomenon that the emission color changed with the Li+ doping content can be observed. ZnAl2O4 with a typical spinel structure is highly expected to be a novel rare‐earth‐free ion‐activated oxide phosphor with red emission, which holds high actual meaning for advancing phosphor‐converted light‐emitting diode (pc‐LED) lighting. Among the rare‐earth‐free activators, Mn4+ ions have emerged as one of the most promising activators. Considering the price advantage of MnCO3 generating Mn2+ ions and the charge compensation effect potentially obtaining Mn4+ ions from Mn2+ ions, this research delves into a collection of ZnAl2O4:Mn2+(Mn4+), x Li+ (x = 0%–40%) phosphors with Li+ as co‐dopant and MnCO3 as Mn2+ dopant source prepared by a high temperature solid‐state reaction method. The lattice structure was investigated using X‐ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL), and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectroscopy. Results suggest a relatively high probability of Li+ ions occupying Zn2+ lattice sites. Furthermore, Li+ ion doping was assuredly found to facilitate the oxidization of Mn2+ to Mn4+, leading to a shift of luminescence peak from 516 to 656 nm. An intriguing phenomenon that the emission color changed with the Li+ doping content was also observed. Meanwhile, the luminescence intensity and quantum yield (QY) at different temperatures, as well as the relevant thermal quenching mechanism, were determined and elucidated detailedly.

Abstract:Transition metal (TM) substitution has been widely applied to change complex oxides crystal structures to create high energy density electrodes materials in high performance rechargeable lithium‐ion batteries. The complex local structure in the oxides imparted by the TM arrangement often impacts their electrochemical behaviors by influencing the diffusion and intercalation of lithium. Here, a major discrepancy is demonstrated between the global and local structures of the promising high energy density and high voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 spinel cathode material that contradicts the existing structural models. A new single‐phase lattice‐cell orientation disorder model is proposed as the mechanism for the local ordering that explains how the inhomogeneous local distortions and the coherent connection give rise to the global structure in the complex oxide. Further, the single‐phase model is consistent with the electrochemical behavior observation of the materials.
Mn–Mn Magnetic Coupling Interaction-Induced Red Emission in a Tetra-Coordinated Lattice

Abstract:Strong magnetic coupling interactions originating from a short Mn-Mn distance in some heavy Mn2+-doped matrices have important effects on luminescence of single Mn2+ ions and close-knit Mn2+-Mn2+ pairs. However, the intrinsic mechanism of controlling spectral regulation remains elusive since the underlying relationship among Mn-Mn distances, magnetic coupling interactions, and optical properties is unclear. Herein, we create an unusual red emission (620 nm) of Mn2+ in a typical tetra-coordinated lattice of Li2CdGeO4 by simply enhancing the Mn2+-doped level in addition to regular green emission (528 nm). Although the dual emission peaks occupy the same tetra-coordinated crystallographic lattice of CdO4, different temperature-dependent emission behaviors are observed, which expands a possibility in optical thermometry sensors. Detailed Mn-Mn distances are calculated via Rietveld refinement analysis, and their effects on the Mn-Mn coupling interactions are evaluated. Furthermore, the Mn-Mn coupling interaction types are identified through electron spin resonance and magnetic measurements. The continuously decreasing distances between Mn2+ ions strengthen the dipole-dipole coupling effect, resulting in the atypical red emission in a tetra-coordinated lattice environment. These findings elucidate the spectral regulation mechanism from the perspective of magnetic coupling interactions, providing a new pathway to regulate Mn2+-related emission.
Localized Charge Accumulation Driven by Li + Incorporation for Efficient LED Phosphors with Tunable Photoluminescence

Abstract:Mn4+ ion-doped red-emitting oxides are promising candidates for light-emitting-diode phosphors, but the formation and stabilization of Mn4+ in the oxide matrix remain a challenge due to the spontaneous reduction of Mn4+ to Mn2+. In this work, we demonstrate that the incorporation of Li+ can regulate the valence of Mn ions doped in spinel-phase ZnAl2O4 and enable tuning of the luminescence of Mn2+ and Mn4+ dopants. Both experimental and calculation results show that the incorporation of Li+ ions can lead to localized charge accumulation around themselves, thereby consuming the excess charges and suppressing the self-reduction of Mn4+. This finding allows for the realization of pure red emission of Mn4+ in ZnAl2O4 for the first time and the fabrication of a corresponding warm white-light-emitting-diode prototype. The Li+-dependent dual emission of Mn2+ (green) and Mn4+ (red) co-doped in ZnAl2O4 can be conveniently utilized to design a ratiometric optical thermometer with excellent visual responses. Abstract:White light-emitting diodes provide widespread applications in lighting, electronic equipment, and high-tech displays. However, thermal quenching effect severely limits their practical application. Here, we developed an orange-red phosphor β-KMg(PO3)3:Mn2+, which emits bright orange-red light when excited by ultraviolet light without the energy transfer of sensitizer, owing to the strong crystal field provided by β-KMg(PO3)3 for Mn2+. The self-reduction of Mn4+ → Mn2+ and good thermal stability have been realized in an ambient atmosphere. The defect types were verified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and cationic vacancy plays a significant role in the self-reduction of Mn4+ → Mn2+. Furthermore, the properties of the trap energy levels were studied by thermoluminescence. The recombination luminescence of the detrapped carriers released from the deep trap levels at high temperatures suppresses the luminescence loss of thermal quenching. Moreover, the trap energy levels play an important role in the mechanoluminescence of β-KMg(PO3)3:Mn2+. Abstract:Pursuing of the capabilities of predicting the luminescent properties of 3d ions doped phosphors before performing experimental exploitation is always a focus of experimental investigation, which is still suspended so far. As a tentative step in this work, we developed a simple relationship to predict the emission peak of Mn2+ only based on its three local-environmental-related parameters: the average bond length between Mn2+ and its ligand anions, ligand orbitals energy and the distortion of its crystal field by focusing on tetrahedral sites. With the relationship, it offers a possible and easier approach to access the emission peaks of Mn2+ in a tetrahedral site, as we find the emission energy increases dominantly with the increase of the bond lengths between Mn2+ and its ligand anions and decreases with the rise of the ligand orbitals energy, while the factor of crystal field distortion could make the emission of Mn2+ red-shifted normally in a margin of several dozens of meV with a rare exception for an extremely large crystal field distortion with larger red-shift about 100–200 meV. We believe this high prediction accuracy of Mn2+ emission peak energy could facilitate more experimental efforts in synthesizing new Mn2+ activated phosphor with target emission position in future.

Abstract:Altering the local symmetry of an activator by lattice tuning is considered an effective strategy to optimize the luminescence performance of phosphors. Herein, the novel Mn4+-activated double perovskite phosphor La1.67MgTaO6 (LMTO) with A-site defects was successfully prepared. Benefiting from the random occupation of the nearest A-site by cations and vacancies, the distorted [MnO6] octahedra lack the inversion center. The LMTO:0.4 mol%Mn4+ phosphor has a significant zero-phonon line intensity with a high internal quantum efficiency (IQE) value of 62.97% after the Laporte selection rule is broken. Furthermore, local lattice tuning was performed by increasing the randomness of the A-site and the distortion index of the [MnO6] octahedron by co-doping with Ca2+ or Sr2+ ions. Importantly, the IQE value of the samples was enhanced from 62.97% to 72.65% and the activation energy increased from 0.497 eV to 0.548 eV, which can be well applied in the fields of plant cultivation and warm white light-emitting diodes. These studies provide valid fundamental insights for the selection of excellent luminescent matrices to obtain efficient Mn4+-activated phosphors via local lattice tuning.
Structural confinement-induced highly efficient deep-red emission and negative thermal quenching performance in Mn4+-activated Ca7Mg2Ga6−yAlyO18:Mn4+ phosphors

Abstract:High quantum efficiency (QE) and thermally stable emission are indispensable for the application of phosphors. Owing to the strong coupling between the lattice and naked d-orbitals of Mn 4+ , Mn 4+ -activated oxide red-emitting phosphors usually exhibit a low QE and serious thermal quenching (TQ), which strictly inhibit their prospective application. Herein, we rationally designed a novel phosphor series Ca 7 Mg 2 Ga 6− y Al y O 18 :0.02Mn 4+ (CMGA y O:Mn 4+ , 0 ≤ y ≤ 1.5), which adopts a high structural symmetry of the space group F 432. Highly efficient and thermally stable deep-red emissions ( λ em = 721 nm) were achieved simultaneously by structurally confining the Mn 4+ -emitting centres at the isolated octahedrally coordinated sites. Specifically, the highest internal and external quantum efficiencies of 90.2 and 75.9%, respectively, were obtained for CMGA 1.5 O:Mn 4+ due to Al 3+ -alloying-induced local structure modification and suppression of non-radiative transitions. Excellent thermal stabilities of 99, 102.2, and 87.9% of room-temperature photoluminescence intensities were retained at 423 K for CMGA y O:Mn 4+ with y = 0, 0.5, and 1.5, respectively. CMGA 0.5 O:Mn 4+ exhibits an abnormal negative TQ behaviour over the measured temperature range (298–473 K), which is attributed to the energy gain via the electron–phonon interactions of the isolated MnO 6 octahedra. Moreover, in situ high-pressure emission spectra of CMGO:0.02Mn 4+ showed that the emission position is highly sensitive to the external pressure with redshift coefficients of 2.8(2) and 1.16(4) nm GPa −1 in different pressure regions. These excellent photoluminescence properties of CMGA y O:Mn 4+ phosphors signify their great application potential in red LEDs and optical pressure sensors. The findings of this work have paved an avenue for the design of high-performance Mn 4+ -activated phosphors.

Abstract:The burgeoning demand for materials with tunable photoluminescence properties for applications has necessitated the exploration of novel luminescent materials. This study presents the synthesis and characterization of a novel 0D organic-inorganic hybrid metal halide (OIHMH) single crystal, C6H14N2CdBr4, which exhibits intriguing luminescent properties upon Mn2+ doping. The introduction of single Mn2+ ions results in a dual-emission, with the unexpected emergence of a red emission peak at 627 nm, in addition to the conventional tetrahedral green emission at 525 nm. This dual-emission is attributed to the distinct inter-tetrahedral distances within the crystal structure of C6H14N2CdBr4with varying distances between [CdBr4]2- tetrahedra, influencing the spatial distribution and interaction of the [MnBr4]2- tetrahedra. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and theoretical calculations reveal the 627 nm and 525 nm emissions are attributed to the d-d transition of magnetic coupled Mn2+-Mn2+ pairs and isolated Mn2+ ions, respectively. This study not only advances the understanding of the luminescence mechanisms of Mn2+ but also paves the way for the development of tunable luminescent materials.

Abstract:Under the excitation of ultraviolet, X-ray, and mechanical stress, intense orange luminescence (Mn 2+ , 4 T 1 → 6 A 1 ) can be generated in Mn 2+ -doped SrZn 2 S 2 O crystal in orthorhombic space group of Pmn2 1 . Herein, the multiple energy conversion in SrZn 2 S 2 O:Mn 2+ , that is, photoluminescence (PL), X-ray-induced luminescence, and mechanoluminescence, is investigated. Insight in luminescence mechanisms is gained by evaluating the Mn 2+ concentration effects. Under the excitation of metal-to-ligand charge-transfer transition, the most intense PL is obtained. X-ray-induced luminescence shows similar features with PL excited by band edge UV absorption due to the same valence band to conduction band transition nature. Benefiting much from trap levels introduced by Mn 2+ impurities, the quenching behavior mechanoluminescence is more like the directly excited PL from Mn 2+ d-d transitions. Interestingly, this concentration preference leads to varying degrees of spectral redshift in each mode luminescence. Further, SrZn 2 S 2 O:Mn 2+ exhibits a good linear response to the excitation power, which makes it potential candidates for applications in X-ray radiation detection and mechanical stress sensing.

Abstract:A novel red-emitting Lu3Al5O12:Mn4+ (LuAG:Mn4+) phosphor was synthesized by a solid-state reaction. The emission-band position is shifted to red region by gradually increasing the amount of substitution of Lu3+ for Y3+, eventually yielding fully Y3Al5O12:Mn4+ (YAG:Mn4+). The compared structural and optical properties of the phosphors were investigated. From the experimentally measured spectroscopic data, crystal field parameter Dq and Racah parameters B and C are calculated to be 2127, 1464, and 3620 cm-1 in LuAG:Mn4+, respectively. In YAG:Mn4+, Dq, B, and C are calculated to be 2082, 1524, and 3740 cm-1, respectively. Impressively, Ca2+/Li+/Mg2+/Sr2+/Sc3+/Na+ dopants were found to be beneficial for enhancing Mn4+ luminescence, and the related mechanisms were systematically discussed.

Abstract:Altering the local symmetry of activator by lattice tuning is considered an effective strategy to optimize the luminescence performance of phosphors. Herein, a novel Mn4+-activated double perovskite phosphor of La1.67MgTaO6 (LMTO) with A-site defects was successfully prepared. Benefiting from the nearest A-site of random occupation with cations and vacancies, the [MnO6] octahedra having distorted property is lacking the inversion center. The LMTO: 0.4 mol%Mn4+ phosphor has a significant zero-phonon line intensity with a high internal quantum efficiency (IQE) value of 62.97% after the Laporte selection rule is broken. Further, local lattice tuning was designed by increasing the randomness of the A-site and the distortion index of the [MnO6] octahedron by co-doping with Ca2+ or Sr2+ ions. Importantly, the IQE value of the samples was enhanced from 62.97% to 72.65% and the activation energy increased from 0.497 eV to 0.548 eV, which can be well applied in the field of plant cultivation and warm white light-emitting diodes. These studies provide valid fundamental insights for the selection of excellent luminescent matrices to obtain efficient Mn4+-activated phosphors via local lattice tuning.

Abstract:At —195°C, the photoluminescence spectrum of Li2TiO3: Mn phosphors has been found to consist of nine narrow bands in the red. This is typical of phosphors activated by Mn+4 ions. The phosphorescence at —195°C decays exponentially with a lifetime of 1.1 milliseconds. Disordering of the cation arrangement in the Li2TiO3 structure by addition of MgO or heat treatment results in a disappearance of the fine structure in the emission and its replacement by a single broad band. The phosphorescence consists of a number of faster superimposed exponential decays. These results are interpreted qualitatively in terms of the changes in interaction of the states of the Mn+4 ion with the crystal.

Abstract:The synthesis methods (one- or two-pot) of stable Mn2+ doped ZnxCd1-xS and ZnxCd1-xS/ZnS quantum dots are reported in this study with a quantum yield (QY) of ∼60% in anhydrous and ∼30% in aqueous media for Mn2+ photoluminescence (PL). Mn2+-localization in the prepared QDs was characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Structural parameters were established by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, time-gated luminescence measurements allowed to elucidate the relaxation dynamics of exciton, traps and 4T1 excited Mn2+. High-order derivative spectral analyses of the photoluminescence (PL) bands of Mn2+ accompanied with Gauss peaks decomposition have been employed. This analysis revealed narrow peaks in the spectral range from green (∼537 nm) to far-red (∼655 nm). These PL peaks can be associated with different locations of Mn2+ in QDs that are characterized by different strengths of the crystal field around Mn2+. Dopant localization sites and relaxation processes control the quantum yield of Mn2+, providing higher photocatalytic activity, pronounced electroluminescence, and higher sensitivity.
