Abstract:A surface plasmon resonance refractive index sensor based on MoS2-aluminium structure is designed for high imaging sensitivity and detection accuracy. The proposed sensor exhibits better performance than graphene-based refractive index sensor in the near-infrared regime. Ahigh imaging sensitivity ofmore than 970 RIU-1 is obtained at the wavelength of 1540 nm. The effect of aluminium thickness, number of MoS2 layers, and the analyte refractive index on the sensor performance was investigated. In addition, the sensor performance comparison of MoS2 and other two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide materials-based sensors in the near-infrared regime is also presented. The designed MoS2-based surface plasmon resonance refractive index sensor could provide potential applications in chemical and biological sensing.

Abstract:We propose refractive index sensors based on Ag-metalized nanolayer in microstructured optical fibers. The surface plasmon resonance modes and the sensing properties are theoretically analyzed using finite element method (FEM). In the calculation, Drude–Lorentz model is used to describe the Metal Dielectric constant. The calculation results show that the sensitivity of Ag-metalized SPR sensor can reach 1500nm/RIU corresponding to a resolution of 6.67×10−5RIU. Comparing with conventional detecting material-Au under the same structure, the sensitivity and 3dB bandwidth of our device are better.

Abstract:Nowdays, the study of measurement of the biological field focuses on the research of improving surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in the fields of integration and detection sensitivity. We designed a kind of grating connected surface plasmon resonance sensor. Theoretically, we analyzed the wave vector and the effective refractive index relations with the diffraction grating structure. Then we obtained the nanoparticles enhancement SPR structure with a resolution 10 times higher than that of traditional SPR sensors. Also, we used the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) analysis and simulation which showed that it was obvious with coupling effect by the nanoparticles enhancement SPR structure that the reflectance spectral bandwidth results validated the structure significantly which improved the sensitivity. Experimental results showed that the dynamic response of the designed sensor reached 10 −6 RIU (refractive index unit). This study has the certain significance to long-distance and special sensing applications.
Magneto-Optical Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensors Based On Magnetic Oxide Thin Films

Abstract:In this study, we present a new magneto-optical surface plasmon resonance sensor based on magnetic oxide and noble metal thin films. In particial, we demonstrate enhanced index sensing figure of merit (FOM) in a waveguide coupled bimetallic MOSPR waveguide structure.. Analytic and numerical calculations demonstrate the multilayer stack of prism/TiN/SiO2/Y3Fe5O12 (YIG)/Ce1Y2Fe5O12 (CeYIG)/Au has six fold higher figure of merit than Au/Co/Au structure at the wavelength of 650 nm. An optimized thickness of CeYIG 45 nm and Au 10 nm with a FOM of xxx is achieved for high sensitivity index sensing. A substantial enhancement of transverse kerr effect (TMOKE) and the index sensitivity was experimentally verified for the proposed device.

Abstract:Spurred by the continuous development of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technology, optical fiber sensors based on SPR have become a research hotspot. Although single-mode fibers (SMFs) are simple and easy to manufacture, the sensitivity is quite poor. On the other hand, even though photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) and anti-resonant fibers (ARFs) can achieve high-sensitivity detection and the wavelength sensitivity is tens of times that of SMFs, they are complex and difficult to produce. Herein, an SPR refractive index sensor composed of micro-nano optical fibers (MNFs) is designed to detect analytes in the refractive index range between 1.33 and 1.43. Analysis by the finite element method (FEM) reveals that the maximum wavelength sensitivity is 49,000 nm/RIU. The SPR sensor boasting a simple structure, low cost, and high wavelength sensitivity has enormous potential in applications such as chemical analysis, environmental monitoring, and other fields.

Abstract:We have designed a metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) nanoantenna array that can support both localized surface plasmon (LSP) modes and magnetic plasmon polariton (MPP) modes. Due to the differences in environmental response among the modes, the array achieves a wide refractive index detection within range of 1.00–1.60. Its sensitivity reaches 522.76 nm/RIU. In addition, we also proposed a universal computing model for sensing under certain disturbances, indicating that the excessive emphasis on the stability of reference signal is unnecessary in self-reference sensing. Benefiting from the quasi-invariant property of magnetic plasmon resonance, the chip has been verified to maintain a significant detection accuracy even under certain perturbations. This work has potential applications in environmental sensing with integrated optics, as well as in the fields of biomedical research and diagnosis.
Plasmonic molybdenum trioxide quantum dots with noble metal-comparable surface enhanced Raman scattering

Abstract:We propose a one-pot solution strategy to prepare sub-stoichiometric MoO3 quantum dots (MoO3--QDs) with single-layered, vacancy-containing and few-crystalline features, which display surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in both visible and near-infrared regions without illumination. In a biosensing system, they show high sensitivity and optimum SPR absorption, differing from that of MoO3 nanosheets. Importantly, MoO3--QDs show outstanding surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance (with an enhancement factor up to 10(6) and a detection limit as low as 10(-9) M), which outperforms previously reported semiconductors and is comparable to noble metals. This remarkable SERS activity is the first obtained in metal oxide QDs, which opens a promising avenue for the development of high-sensitivity, non-noble metal-based SERS substrates.

Abstract:We investigate a novel, to the best of our knowledge, D-type photonic crystal fiber-based refractive index microbiosensor that works on surface plasmon resonance. We study the performance of the proposed sensor using the finite element method. Further, we analyze the influence of various materials, namely, gold, silver, and indium tin oxide that are deposited on the D-type fiber surface. Of these metals, gold has been examined to be advantageous owing to its enhanced sensitivity and greater chemical stability. The proposed microbiosensor exhibits a high wavelength sensitivity of 19,000 nm/RIU in the sensing range of 1.40-1.41, and its wavelength interrogation resolution is 5.26 x 10(-6) RIU. Besides, this novel scheme provides a high amplitude sensitivity of 569 RIU-1 with the corresponding resolution of 2.63 x 10(-6) RIU. Further, the linearity of the proposed microbiosensor, R-2, is 0.9745 in the sensing environment of the refractive index ranging between 1.31 and 1.40. Finally, optimizing the metal coating thickness, diameter of the air-hole, and the lattice pitch of the proposed sensor have been conducted systematically, in order to augment the sensing performance of the proposed sensor. We foresee that the proposed microbiosensor would turn out to be an appropriate candidate in sensing the analyzes of high refractive index. (C) 2021 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Optical biosensors with the high sensitivity is an important tool for environment monitoring, disease diagnosis and drug development. Integrating the biosensor could reduce the size and cost and is desirable for home and outdoor use. However, the integrated structure always results in the worsening of sensitivity and narrowing of sensing range, especially for small molecule sensing. In this work, we propose an integrated plasmonic biosensor based on the resonant structure composed of dielectric grating and metal film. With vertically incident light from the grating side, the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode could be excited at certain wavelength and the reflected light would vanish. Simulation results indicate that, when varying refractive index (n(det)) of detection layer, the energy of reflected light changes dramatically. Assuming the resolution of the power meter is 0.01dB, the sensing resolution could be 4.37x10(-6) RIU, which is very close to the bulk lens based SPP biosensor by monitoring the light intensity variation. Since antibody and antigen always have the size of tens of nanometers, it is necessary to check the sensing ability of the sensor in tens of nanometers. Fixing n(det) and varying the thickness of detection layer, calculation result demonstrates that the reflected light energy is sensitive to the thickness change with one hundred nanometers. This attributes to the surface mode property of SPP mode.

Abstract:A surface plasmon resonance imaging biosensor based on $\text{MoS}_2$ deposited on Aluminium substrate is designed for high imaging sensitivity and detection accuracy. The proposed biosensor exhibits better performance than graphene-based biosensor in the near-infrared regime. Abstract:A high-performance wide-angle refractive index sensor based on a simple onedimensional (1D) metallic deep nanogroove array with high aspect ratio is experimentally fabricated and demonstrated. The 1D deep groove array is featured by the excitation of magnetic plasmon (MP), referring to an effective coupling of incident electromagnetic waves with a strong magnetic response induced inside the deep grooves. Utilizing the MP resonances that are extremely sensitive to the surrounding dielectric medium, we successfully achieve a refractive index sensitivity (RIS) up to $\sim$1300 nm/RIU, which is higher than that of most experimentally designed plasmonic sensors in infrared region. Importantly, benefiting from angle-independent MP resonances with strong confinement of magnetic field inside the deep grooves and strong electric field localization at the groove openings, we demonstrate wide-angle sensing capability valid in a broadband infrared region with an excellent linear dependence on the change of refractive index. Such a MP-based sensor, together with its simple 1D flat nature and ease of fabrication, has great potential for practical design of high sensitive, cost-effective and compact sensing devices.

Abstract:We investigate the metamaterials consisting of top layer U-shaped metallic split-ring resonators, the middle thin dielectric layer, and the bottom thick metal film, which can realize high-quality refractive index sensing. When propagating surface plasmon polaritons are introduced, two ultra-narrow-band hybridized modes will appear, whose full width at half maximum can reach up to 2.5 nm. Because of the ultra-narrow linewidth and huge magnetic field enhancement at hybridized modes, the metamaterials display very high sensitivity (S = 912 nm RIU-1, S* = 95.64 RIU-1) and large figure of merit (FOM = 364.8, FOM*= 160 740.34), which has great potential in label-free biomedical sensing.

Abstract:Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) owing to its extreme sensitivity to the refractive index of surrounding medium has been widely applied to chemical and biological sensing. However, it is difficult to realize SPR sensing simultaneously with large sensitivity and figure of merit (FOM) in a conventional prism coupling structure. In this paper, we numerically study the SPRs in a polymer-protected sodium thin film and sinusoidal nanograting based on a prism Kretschmann configuration using finite element method (FEM). In the near-infrared wavelengths, both angular and wavelength interrogation are investigated and high sensitivity (14.9 mRIU and 750 degRIU for the thin film and nanograting, respectively) and FOM (480.6 RIU and 255.6 RIU for the thin film and nanograting, respectively) can be achieved simultaneously. It should be noticed that the large FOM mainly originates from the narrow resonant linewidth. Additionally, our nanograting structure can support a self-reference sensing scheme, which is beneficial to realize accurate sensing. Our FEM simulations are in good agreement with the calculation by the transfer matrix method (TMM) and rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA). Our proposed sodium-based SPR structures do not require complex plasmonic nanostructures and are compatible with a thermo-assisted spin-coating process, which shows great potential in realizing high-performance optical sensing beyond noble metals and expands the application scope of sodium-based plasmonic devices.

Abstract:In this paper, the magneto-optical effects and the sensing performance of one-dimensional all-metal magnetic nanogratings (AMMNs) composed of noble metal and magnetic metal is studied theoretically. The transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) is realized by the magneto-optical surface plasmon resonance (MO-SPR) caused by the oblique incident of TM polarized light on a periodic subwavelength grating (Ag/Co/Ag), which is also the principle of refractive index sensor performance. We demonstrate that the behavior of TMOKE spectra can be controlled by tuning the geometric parameters of AMMNs, including the width and thickness of noble metal Ag and magnetic metal Co. Notably, the physical mechanism of the ultra-narrow resonances in such nanostructures is the coupling effect of surface plasmon resonances and diffracted modes in all-metal periodic array gratings. This technique achieves higher resolution than traditional surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in refractive index sensor applications. The results show that the structure supports a narrow MO-SPR with a bandwidth of 8 nm, and the absolute value of TMOKE is as high as 0.9, which is almost an order of magnitude larger than the reported plasmonic resonant refractive index sensor. After theoretical calculation, the refractive index sensitivity reaches 720 nmRIU-1, and the figure of merit reaches 7579 RIU-1. This strategy is very important for obtaining refractive index sensors.

Surface phonon resonance: A new mechanism for enhancing photonic spin Hall effect and refractive index sensor

Abstract:Metal-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) plays an important role in enhancing the photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) and developing sensitive optical sensors. However, the very large negative permittivities of metals limit their applications beyond the near-infrared regime. In this work, we theoretically present a new mechanism to enhance the photonic SHE by taking advantage of SiC-supported surface phonon resonance (SPhR) in the mid-infrared regime. The transverse displacement of photonic SHE is very sensitive to the wavelength of incident light and the thickness of SiC layer. Under the optimal parameter setup, the calculated largest transverse displacement of SiC-based SPhR structure reaches up to 163.8 μm, which is much larger than the condition of SPR. Moreover, a NO 2 gas sensor based on the SPhR-enhanced photonic SHE is theoretically proposed with the superior sensing performance. Both the intensity and angle sensitivity of this sensor can be effectively manipulated by varying the damping rate of SiC. The results may provide a promising paradigm to enhance the photonic SHE in the mid-infrared region and open up new opportunity of highly sensitive refractive index sensors.

Abstract:Long-range surface plasmon resonance (LRSPR), generated from a coupled plasmon polariton in a thin metal slab sandwiched by two dielectrics, has attracted more and more attention due to its merits, such as longer propagation and deeper penetration than conventional single-interface surface plasmon resonance. Many useful applications related to light–medium interaction have been demonstrated based on the LRSPR effect, especially in the sensing area. Here, we propose and demonstrate an LRSPR-based refractive index sensor by using a SiO2-Au-TiO2 heterostructure, in which a D-shaped honeycomb-microstructure optical fiber (MOF) is designed as the silica substrate and then deposited with a gold film and thin-layer titanium dioxide (TiO2). By using the full-vector finite-element method (FEM), this heterostructure is numerically investigated and demonstrated to excite LRSPR without a buffer layer, which is usually necessary in previous LRSPR devices. Through comprehensive discussion about the influence of structural parameters on the resonant wavelength, the excitation of the LRSPR in the proposed heterostructure is revealed to be highly related to the effective refractive index of MOF’s fundamental core mode, which is mainly determined by the MOF’s pitch, the thicknesses of the silica web and the planar-layer silica. Moreover, the thin-layer TiO2 plays an important role in significantly enhancing the resonance and the sensitivity to analyte’s refractive index as well, when it is coated on the top of the Au film rather than between the metal and waveguide. Finally, the proposed LRSPR sensor based on SiO2-Au-TiO2 heterostructure shows an ultra-high wavelength sensitivity of 20,100 nm/RIU and the corresponding minimum resolution is as low as 4.98×10−7 RIU. Thus, the proposed LRSPR device offers considerable potential for sensing applications in biomedical and biochemical areas.

Abstract:In order to cope with the crosstalk between temperature and refractive index (RI) caused by high-temperature environments, this study proposes to modify the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) fiber optic sensors with molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). MoS2 efficiently modulates the resonance wavelength, enabling the sensor to operate in high-temperature environments. The effect of MoS2 film thickness on the resonance wavelength was investigated by depositing MoS2 film on the surface of no-core fiber (NCF) using the magnetron sputtering method. The analysis shows that MoS2 can induce a significant redshift of the resonance dip, and the degree of redshift is related to the film thickness. In addition, a dual-parameter SPR sensor capable of detecting RI at high temperatures was prepared in this work by selecting the optimal Ag film thickness and MoS2 film thickness. The sensor was obtained by cascading an Ag-based NCF with an Ag/MoS2-based NCF, which was simulated and tested experimentally. The results show that the maximum temperature sensitivity is 4.3 nm/°C over the 50 °C–90 °C temperature range. The maximum RI sensitivity is 5243.4 nm/RIU over the RI range of 1.333–1.395. The test results also show that the two channels of the sensor are independent of each other and have good stability. Therefore, Ag/MoS2-based SPR sensors have the advantages of adjustable bandwidth, dual-parameter independent detection, and high sensitivity. These are essential in the future fields of multiparameter sensing, compensated detection, and real-time biomonitoring.

By constructing a three-layer structure which comprises the periodic Au nanodisk array, Cc: YIG film, and TiN film, the coupling between the Au nanodisk' s localized surface plasmon resonance LSPR) and the TiN/Ce: YIG interface propagation surface plasmon resonance can be realized, which can significantly reduce the scattering loss of LSPR and enhance the magneto-optical effect. The absolute value of the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) of MOSPR reaches 0.21. Using the MOSPR and the strong magneto-optical effect of the magneto-optical oxide to prepare the sensor can significantly improve the figure of merit ( FoM) of the LSPR sensor. Based on the TMOKE spectrum for sensing, the sensor's FoM is up to 2192.4586 R1U(-1). This research provides a new idea for the preparation of LSPR devices with high sensitivity and high FoM.
