Abstract:Hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite is hydrothermally synthesized in a single step with cetyltrimethylammonium (CTA) hydroxide acting as mesoporogen and structure-directing agent. Essential to this synthesis is the replacement of NaOH with KOH. An in-depth solid-state NMR study reveals that, after early electrostatic interaction between condensed silica and the head group of CTA, ZSM-5 crystallizes around the structure-directing agent. The crucial aspect of using KOH instead of NaOH lies in the faster dissolution of silica, thereby providing sufficient nutrients for zeolite nucleation. The hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite contains mesopores and shows excellent catalytic performance in the methanol-to-hydrocarbons reaction.

Abstract:The preparation of zeolite ZSM-5 without using a template was extensively investigated. Zeolite ZSM-5 small particle aggregates were synthesized in the absence of a template using sodium silicate as the silica source and by controlling the nucleation time at high temperature with a simple two-step method in a rotating autoclave on a spit within an oven. The first stage at higher temperature consisted of accelerating the nucleation and the second stage at lower temperature consisted of obtaining small crystals in the absence of a template. The resulting zeolites were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, ammonia temperature-programmed desorption, and N2 adsorption. Compared with the micron-sized zeolite crystals that are synthesized in the one-step method, zeolite ZSM-5 small particles prepared by the two-step method have a higher specific surface area and an equivalent acid site content. The sample synthesized by the two-step method mainly contains Brönsted acid sites and a few Lewis acid sites indicating that Al is incorporated into the framework of the zeolite.

Abstract:This work reports that sub-micron sized hierarchical porous ZSM-5 particles with controllable mesoporous structures can be facilely synthesized in a seed-assisted system without using any secondary templates or organic additives. The results showed that typical samples so-obtained display relative uniform ellipsoidal sub-micron sized particles consisting of loosely packed primary nanocrystals. The mesoporous structures of ZSM-5 zeolite particles can be effectively introduced and adjusted by solely changing the quantity of NaOH in the initial synthesis mixture. The NaOH dosages significantly affect not only hierarchical mesoporosity but also the ratio of Si/Al and thus acidity of the final ZSM-5 product. Moreover, the effect of synthesis hydrothermal procedure was also investigated. The typical sample Z5-0.12 possesses high crystallinity, BET surface area, well-developed mesoporosity and improved catalytic performance in LDPE cracking. This approach constitutes a facile and cost-effective pathway to prepare sub-micron sized hierarchical porous ZSM-5 particles and might promote their application in industry.

Abstract:Uniform-sized and monodispersed boehmite core–shell and hollow spheres have been successfully synthesized using a template-free solvothermal route. The experimental parameters such as reaction duration, the trisodium citrate amounts and solvents are shown to play important roles in the formation of the AlOOH core–shell and hollow spheres. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform IR, thermal gravimetric analysis, N2 adsorption/desorption, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution TEM were used to characterize the products. The results show that the prepared polycrystalline hollow spheres are composed of well-aligned AlOOH nanowires and have an orthorhombic structure. Finally, a dissolution–renucleation mechanism was proposed for the formation of boehmite hollow structures.

Abstract:Zeolites have been widely used in various fields in industry, such as catalysis, separation, and adsorption, etc. The small pore size of the micropores in the zeolite could lead to severe diffusion resistance in mass transfer. Numerous efforts have been dedicated to imposing hierarchical pore systems into zeolites by using templates or leaching methods. Here, we report the synthesis of single-crystalline hierarchical shell-like ZSM-5 by utilizing a dissolution-recrystallization post-treatment on mesoporous ZSM-5. Tetrapropylammonium hydroxide solution was used in the post-treatment. The hierarchical porosity in the crystalline shell can be controlled by adding sodium cations into the synthesis system. The hierarchical shell-like ZSM-5 reported here shows higher catalytic activity in acetalization reactions containing bulky molecules.

Abstract:ZSM-5 zeolite has good hydrothermal stability and is widely used in fields such as hydrocarbon catalytic cracking and nitrogen oxide removal. In this study, a simple crystal seed solution assisted method was developed for the synthesis of ZSM-5 zeolite without template from solid waste. The perlite tailings are not suitable for traditional perlite industrial production due to their small particle size. It was used as the main silicon source and the sole aluminum source to synthesis ZSM-5 zeolite. The effects of synthesis conditions, such as SiO2/Al2O3, Na2O/SiO2 and H2O/SiO2 molar ratios, on the properties of the products were investigated, and the best preparation conditions were optimized. The crystallization mechanism of the crystal seed solution assisted method to synthesis ZSM-5 zeolite from the perlite tailings was explored. In addition, the Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst was prepared by copper ion exchange method, and its performance of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx was studied. The experimental results showed that the product ZSM-5 zeolite has a high degree of crystallization and typical hexagonal pyramid morphology. The as-synthesized ZSM-5 zeolite had a large specific surface area, and it had both micropores and mesopores. The as-synthesized Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst had a wide denitrification activity window of 230-500 degrees C (denitrification efficiency of more than 90%) and N2 selectivity was over 96% in the temperature range of 100-540 degrees C. The crystal seed solution induced crystallization strategy can be used to prepare zeolites catalysts with high silica-alumina ratio from pearlite waste by one-step method. This method has a good industry application prospect due to simple steps and lower cost.

Abstract:ZSM-5 zeolites with hierarchical porosity have been an increasing attention due to their improvement in diffusion limitation issue. This work here reports that hierarchical porous ZSM-5 zeolites were synthesized using fumed silica and as-synthesized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) as dual-silica source for the first time with the aid of silicate-1 seed. The effects of the amounts of silicate-1 seed and as-synthesized MSNs on crystallinity, morphology, mesoporous structure and acidity of the prepared ZSM-5 zeolites were systematically investigated by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, N 2 adsorption-desorption and NH 3 -TPD techniques. The results showed that mesopores can be incorporated by introducing an appropriate amount of as-synthesized MSNs which also promote the crystallization of aluminosilicate at the same time. Moreover, the mesoporous structures of ZSM-5 zeolites can be flexibly regulated within a certain range via varying the dosage of as-synthesized MSNs. The obtained optimal sample Z-0.02ã0.2 with high crystallinity and bi-modal mesopores centered at 2.1ô nm and 3.4ô nm exhibits significantly improved catalytic performance in LDPE cracking on a TG apparatus, compared with the conventional mono-modal microporous ZSM-5 zeolite. This approach constitutes a simple and low-cost pathway to synthesize ZSM-5 zeolites with controllable hierarchical porous architecture and might facilitate their industrial application.

Abstract:Constructing hollow structure into microporous zeolites can improve the accessibility of acid sites located at the inner part and the diffusion property. Hence, the development of an efficient synthesis strategy to acquire zeolites with tunable hollow structures and acidity has attracted much attention. In this work, an innovative tandem synthesis route was proposed to prepare MFI zeolites with diverse hollow structure while maintaining solid yields exceeding 90 %. The substitution of ethanol molecules, which previously occupied the micropores, with tetrapropylammonium cations was proved to be the key factor to construct hollow structure. And a crystallization-driven particle dissolution mechanism was proposed. The dimension of the hollow cavity, particle size, and Si/Al ratio can be flexibly regulated. Interestingly, hollow MFI samples featuring the common cavity structure, "eye-like" cavity structure, or double-cavity structure can be directly synthesized by controlling the dissolution of core parts. In the 1-butene catalytic cracking reactions, a much higher conversion of 67.2 % was acquired over hollow ZSM-5 compared with that over conventional ZSM-5 (35.8 %) after 64 h of reaction. This improvement can be attributed to the eightfold increase of diffusivity in hollow ZSM-5. This facile and efficient synthesis method endows accurate regulation of the hollow structure, which is meaningful for both fundamental research and industrial applications of hollow zeolites.

Abstract:For zeolite catalysts, the regulation of active site and pore structure plays an important role in the enhancement of their catalytic performance. In this work, a one-pot and organic template-free co-regulation route is proposed to straightforwardly synthesize basic mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolites with adjustable alkaline-earth metal species. The synthesis pathway combines two decisive strategies: 1) the seed-induced interface assembly growth method and 2) the acidic co-hydrolysis/condensation of aluminosilicate species and alkaline-earth metal (e.g., Mg, Ca, Sr, or Ba) sources. It is interesting that the mesoporous structure was self-evolved through particle-attached seed-interfacial crystallization without the assistance of any template. Meanwhile, the incorporation of alkaline-earth metals species is homogeneous and highly dispersed in the solid products during the whole crystallization process, and finally generate the superior basicity. Catalysis tests of the as-synthesized samples displayed their novel performance in the typical base reaction of Knoevenagel condensation, even for bulky substrates owing to the enhanced diffusion arising from the meso/microporous network. This finding opens new possibilities for facile, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly synthesis of mesoporous high-silica zeolites with tunable acid/base properties, and deepens our understanding of the particle-attached crystallization.

Abstract:Application of ultrasound power to the mother liquor is popular pretreatment for zeolite synthesis which offers a simple way of accelerating crystallization process and finetuning the properties of nanocrystalline zeolites. In this work, sonication-aided synthesis of mesoporous ZSM-5 at low temperature and ambient pressure was systematically studied, in an attempt to reach efficient and benign synthesis of zeolites with hierarchical pore structure, which has wide applications as catalysts and sorbents. The effects of sonication duration, power density, sonication temperature and seeding on the crystallization of ZSM-5 were investigated. The obtained samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, BET and VOCs capture. High quality mesoporous ZSM-5 can be obtained by a facile 5 d synthesis at 363 K, much faster than conventional hydrothermal synthesis. The reduced synthesis time was mainly attributed to the enhanced crystallization kinetics caused by the fragmentation of seeds and nuclei, while sonication radiation had little impact on the nucleation process. Compared with control sample, mesoporous ZSM-5 prepared by sonochemical method had higher surface area and mesoporosity which demonstrated improved adsorption performance for the capture of isopropanol.

Abstract:Mesocrystal zeolite with well-defined morphology owns mesoporous channels and single crystal characteristics, which could promote diffusion efficiency, stability and catalytic activity. Thus, we performed the controllable synthesis of ZSM-5 mesocrystal without special additives and complex methods. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and fast Fourier transform (FFT) showed diffraction spots regardless of crystallization time, which indicated the well oriented feature of synthesized ZSM-5 zeolites. The crystallization process was further investigated. The oriented particle attachment (OPA) effectively guided the synthesis process of mesocrystals, which followed the nonclassical crystallization mechanism. The crystallinity curve exhibited valley-like shape, which manifested that the crystallization pathway went through three stages: fast precipitation, deconstruction and reorganization. The plausible formation mechanism was proposed, which might be useful for the fabrication of ZSM-5 mesocrystal. The prepared zeolites showed superior catalytic performance in aldol condensation reaction between benzaldehyde and 2-hydroxyacetophenone, obtaining 93% of the conversion.

Racing Crystallization Mechanism for Economical Design of Single-Crystal Hollow ZSM-5 with the Broken Limit of Si/Al Ratio and Improved Mass Transfer

Abstract:Development of economic strategy to synthesize hollow zeolite with widely tunable Si/Al ratios providing variable acidity is of great significance in industry. Here, a one-step and low-cost strategy without mesoporogen was successfully developed to synthesize single-crystal hollow ZSM-5 containing mesopores/macropores, with variable Si/Al ratios of about 14–∞ and 114–∞ at critical TPA+/SiO2 ratios of 0.05–0.1 and 0.05, respectively. This is the first time the usage of a large amount of TPAOH was avoided while breaking the traditional limitation of Si/Al ratio (25–50). The component of synthesis system and crystallization temperature acting as the vital roles in hollow structure has been confirmed by a series of characterization. Moreover, according to the investigation of the evolution process, a novel racing crystallization mechanism based on the competition relationship between surface crystallization and the internal dissolution rate was proposed for the first time. The racing crystallization mechanism and internal nonprotective aluminum become the crucial factors for synthesis. The prepared hollow ZSM-5 zeolites exhibit superior catalytic performance in the different acidity-catalyzed condensation involving large molecules between benzaldehyde and n-butyl alcohol as well as 2-hydroxyacetophenone, which is mainly attributed to the property acidity, more accessible active Al sites on the surface, and shorter diffusion path. By calculating, the effectiveness factor (η) of hollow zeolite is close to 1, further confirming its better mass transfer ability. Abstract:Columned ZSM-5 zeolite monoliths with hierarchical structure and excellent mechanical strength were successfully prepared by a hydrothermal transformation method. The pre-formed extrudates of aluminosilicate embedded with β zeolite were subjected to a hydrothermal synthesis system and the hierarchical porous ZSM-5 zeolite monoliths with the same columned shape were obtained after the hydrothermal treatment. The intra-particle hollow structure formed during hydrothermal synthesis was attributed to the digestion of inner β zeolite accompanying with the growth of ZSM-5 zeolite shell. The related data of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis, N2-sorption experiment and mercury intrusion prosimetry (MIP), showed ZSM-5 zeolite monolith had enriched multi-porosity and excellent mechanical stability, which contribute to its further application in field of catalysis and separation. The obtained hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite monoliths showed superior catalytic performance in α-pinene isomerization for their proper acidity and good diffusion, compared with the ZSM-5 zeolite sample prepared from the precursor without β zeolite.

Abstract:A new type of hierarchically porous ZSM-5-type zeolite, Hp-ZSM, with well defined macro-/meso-/microporous structures was facilely synthesized via a simple steam-assisted conversion route in the presence of ethanol. This novel material exhibits a tri-modal porous structure: a macroporous network with macropore sizes of 50-200 nm; a well defined mesoporous structure of pore size around 2.5 nm in the macroporous framework and a typical microporous ZSM-5 structure in the mesoporous framework. A micro-emulsion mechanism was proposed for the formation of the macroporosity where ethanol is assumed to form 'oil' droplets in the water phase in the presence of surfactants.
Direct Preparation of *MRE Zeolites with Ultralarge Mesoporosity: Strategy and Working Mechanism

Abstract:Introduction of mesopore is critical for applications where mass-transport limitations within microporous networks, especially for zeolite with one-dimensional microporous network, hinder their performance. Generally, the creation of mesopore in zeolite through a direct synthesis route is strongly dependent on complex and expensive organic molecules, which limits their commercial application. Here, we successfully developed a facile synthesis route for preparing ZSM-48 zeolite (*MRE topology) with ultralarge mesoporosity in which typical 1,6-hexylenediamine worked as an organic structure-directing agent, innovatively assisted by a simple crystal growth modifier (tetraethylammonium bromide, TEABr). The working mechanism of TEABr during crystallization was revealed and proposed on the basis of TEM, thermal gravimetric mass spectrum, and 13C cross-polarization magic angle spinning NMR characterization results. In the process, TEA+ ions preferentially interacted with the solid during the induction period, which effectively suppressed the aggregation of ZSM-48 primary nanorods. As a result, ultralarge mesoporosity of 0.97 cm3·g–1 was constructed through the stacking of the nanorods. Interestingly, TEA+ ions only took part in the crystallization process and did not occlude in the pores of the final zeolites indicating its potential in recyclability. Moreover, similar synthesis strategy could be applied for the preparation of hierarchical ferrierite zeolites, implying the universality of this strategy. Abstract:The morphology and mesoporosity of zeolite are two vital properties to determine its performance in diverse applications involving adsorption and catalysis; while it remains a big challenge for the synthesis and regulation of zeolites with exceptional morphology/porosity only through inorganic-ions-based modification. Herein, by simply optimizing the alkali metal type (K+ or Na+), as well as alkali/water ratio and crystallization temperature, the zeolite ZSM-5 mesocrystals with diverse mesostructures are simply and controllably prepared via fine-tuning the crystallization mechanism in an organotemplate-free, ions-mediated seed-assisted system. Moreover, the impacts of these key parameters on the evolution of seed crystals, the development and assembly behavior of aluminosilicate species and the solution-phase process during zeolite crystallization are investigated by means of directional etching in NH4F or NaOH solutions. Except for the morphology/mesoporosity modulation, their physical and chemical properties, such as particle size, microporosity, Si/Al ratio and acidity, can be well maintained at a similar level. As such, the p/o-xylene adsorption and catalytic performance of o-xylene isomerization are used to exhaustively evaluate the synergistically enhanced catalytic activity and shape selectivity of the obtained products. This work demonstrates the possibility of effectively constructing novel zeolite mesostructures by simply altering parameters on simple ions-controlled crystallization and provides good models to inspect the impacts of mesoporosity or morphology on their catalytic performances.

Abstract:An innovative hydrothermal method has been successfully applied to the synthesis of hierarchical ZSM-5/beta composite zeolites with different mass ratios. Firstly, the ZSM-5 zeolites were coated with amorphous silica and aluminum species by a spray drying process. Then, the precursor powder was hydrothermally crystallized for only 1-2 days with the addition of tetraethyl ammonium hydroxide (TEAOH). The obtained products were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, N2 physical adsorption-desorption, 27Al MAS NMR, ICP, pyridine-IR and NH3-TPD techniques. The characterization results imply that the ZSM-5/beta composite zeolites exhibit hierarchical-pores, higher external surface areas and larger mesopore volumes as compared to those of the pure ZSM-5 and beta zeolite. Moreover, the pore structure and acid sites of the ZSM-5/beta composite can be adjusted by changing the mass ratio of ZSM-5/beta. Finally, the ZSM-5/beta composite catalysts exhibit good catalytic performances in the cracking of 1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene (1,3,5-TIPB).
