Abstract:In this paper, the robust stability and stabilization problem for a class of linear uncertain neutral systems with time-varying delays is considered. Based on an augmented Lyapunov functional, by employing linear matrix inequality (LMI) technique and free-weighting matrix approach, sufficient conditions for the design of state feedback controller is presented. The derived controller is applied for the robust stabilization of the linear neutral system in the presence of time-varying delays and parameter uncertainties. The results are established in the form of LMI, which can be easily solved by standard numerical software. Finally, numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the validity and less conservatism of the results.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the Timoshenko beam with only one dynamic control boundary condition of fractional derivative type. We show that the system is not uniformly stable by a spectrum method but it is polynomial stable using the frequency domain approach and Borichev and Tomilov’s result. These results improve some recent results in the literature.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a vibrating beam with one segment made of viscoelastic material of a Kelvin–Voigt (shorted as K–V) type and other parts made of elastic material by means of the Timoshenko model. We have deduced mathematical equations modelling its vibration and studied the stability of the semigroup associated with the equation system. We obtain the exponential stability under certain hypotheses of the smoothness and structural condition of the coefficients of the system, and obtain the strong asymptotic stability under weaker hypotheses of the coefficients.

Abstract:In this paper we study the stabilization of a non-uniform Timoshenko beam with indefinite damping terms under boundary control and prove how the damping terms can affect the decay rate asymptotically. Using the theory of perturbed problems, we obtain the stability and establish the spectrum determined growth condition for the problem. Moreover, when the two damping terms are indefinite, we provide a condition to obtain  the exponential stability.

Abstract:In this paper, we examine the stability of a nonlinear shear beam system. We demonstrate the well-posedness of the system using the Faedo-Galerkin method and establish exponential stability through the multiplier method. Our findings improve upon previously obtained stability results for certain nonlinear Timoshenko-type systems, as we do not require the use of two controls to achieve exponential stability. We also provide numerical experiments at the end to support our theoretical results.

Abstract:The problem of boundary feedback stabilization of rotating Timoshenko beam, arising from control of flexible robot arms, is studied in this paper. First, under gain adaptive direct strain feedback controls, a counterexample is given to show that the corresponding closed loop system is not asymptotically stable, which is contrary to traditional conjecture. The counterexample given in this paper also exemplifies an interesting result: certain two two-order linear partial differential equations with five homogeneous boundary conditions have non-trivial solutions. Then, with an additional boundary feedback control, the related energy of the closed loop system is proved to be strongly stable, or more precisely, the configuration of the beam can be exponentially stabilized with some suitable non-linear boundary feedback controls with adaptive gain.

Abstract:This study mainly focuses on the boundary control problem for a novel flexible Timoshenko beam manipulator system with measurement delay terms. The actuator structure of the manipulator consisted of a translational slider and a rotational motor, which are able to provide two inputs to influence different variables in boundary conditions of the Timoshenko partial differential equations. A static feedback boundary controller is proposed to realise exponential stability of the closed-loop system based on $C_0$<math>C0</math>-semigroup and fundamental solutions. The controller is independent of the precise knowledge of parameters in the delay terms directly, so it has robustness to time delays in certain degree. Numerical simulations are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the indirect boundary stability and exact controllability of a one-dimensional Timoshenko system. In the first part of the paper, we consider the Timoshenko system with only one boundary fractional damping. We first show that the system is strongly stable but not uniformly stable. Hence, we look for a polynomial decay rate for smooth initial data. Using frequency domain arguments combined with the multiplier method, we prove that the energy decay rate depends on coefficients appearing in the PDE and on the order of the fractional damping. Moreover, under the equal speed propagation condition, we obtain the optimal polynomial energy decay rate. In the second part of this paper, we study the indirect boundary exact controllability of the Timoshenko system with mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions and boundary control. Using non-harmonic analysis, we first establish a weak observability inequality, which depends on the ratio of the waves propagation speeds. Next, using the HUM method, we prove that the system is exactly controllable in appropriate spaces and that the control time can be small.

Abstract:In this paper, the numerical approximation of a Timoshenko beam with boundary feedback is considered. We derived a linearized three-level difference scheme on uniform meshes by the method of reduction of order for a Timoshenko beam with boundary feedback. It is proved that the scheme is uniquely solvable, unconditionally stable and second order convergent in L∞ norm by using the discrete energy method. A numerical example is presented to verify the theoretical results.

Abstract:The main concern of this paper is to study the boundary stabilization problem of the disk-beam system. To do so, we assume that the boundary control is either of a force type control or a moment type control and is subject to the presence of a constant time-delay. First, we show that in both cases, the system is well-posed in an appropriate functional space. Next, the exponential stability property is established. Finally, the obtained outcomes are ascertained through numerical simulations.

Abstract:In this paper we consider a hybrid elastic model consisting of a Timoshenko beam and a tip load at the free end of the beam. Under the equal speed wave propagation condition, we show polynomial decay for the model which includes the rotary inertia of the tip load when feedback boundary moment and force controls are applied at the point of contact between the beam and the tip load.

Abstract:The stability of an elastic beam is studied when the beam is subjected to a longitudinal force governed by a feedback loop. The setup of the simplified mechanical model is motivated by a basic problem of electroacoustics. The corresponding governing equation is the 1D wave equation with delayed boundary conditions. By means of the D׳Alembert solution, the system can be transformed into a delay differential equation of neutral type that includes two time delays. The intricate stability chart is constructed analytically in the parameter plane of the gain parameter and the ratio of the time delays. The complete chart extends the numerical results of the literature, while it also draws attention to the numerical difficulties of finite degree of freedom approximations and to the extreme sensitivity of the dynamics with respect to the time delay parameters of the system.

Abstract:We consider an inhomogeneous Euler-Bernoulli (EB) beam of length $L$ clamped at both ends and subject to : an external frictional damping and a thermal effect (Fourier law). We prove the well-posedness of the model and analyze the behavior of the solution as $t \rightarrow + \infty.$ The existence is proved using semigroup theory, and the exponential stabilization of solutions is obtained considering multiplier technique. A numerical illustration of the energy decay is given, based on initial data close to a real physical experiment.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the asymptotic behavior of a linear problem that describes the vibrations of a coupled suspension bridge. The single-span road-bed is modeled as an extensible thermoelastic damped beam, which is simply supported at the ends. The heat conduction is governed by Cattaneo's law. The main cable is modeled as a damped string and is connected to the road-bed by a distributed system of one-sided elastic springs. First, utilizing the theory of semigroups, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution. Second, by constructing an appropriate Lyapunov functional, we establish exponential stability using the energy method. Numerically, we introduce fully discrete approximations based on the finite-element method to approximate the spatial variable and the implicit Euler scheme to discretize the time derivatives. Then, we show that the discrete energy decays, and a priori error estimates are established. Finally, some numerical simulations are presented to show the accuracy of the algorithm and the behavior of the solution.

Abstract:This article is dedicated to the investigation of the stabilization problem of a flexible beam attached to the center of a rotating disk. We assume that the feedback law contains a nonlinear torque control applied on the disk and nonlinear boundary controls exerted on the beam. Thereafter, it is proved that the proposed controls guarantee the exponential stability of the system under a realistic smallness condition on the angular velocity of the disk and general assumptions on the nonlinear functions governing the controls. We used here the strategy of Lasiecka and Tataru and Alabau-Boussouira. This permits to improve the stability result shown in \cite{CH:99} in the sense that, on one hand, we deal with a general form of the nonlinear functions involved in the boundary controls. On the other hand, we manage to weaken the conditions on those functions unlike in B. Chentouf and J. F. Couchouron, Nonlinear feedback stabilization of a rotating body-beam without damping, ESAIM: COCV., 4 (1999), 515-535, where the authors consider a special type of functions that are almost linear.
