Abstract:Advanced functional materials, drives and transmissions, sensors and mechanisms provide solid foundations for developing intelligent robots, for which modelling and simulation tools have contributed greatly to these developments, and facilitated deployments and applications of intelligent robots. Motivated by rapid developments of sensor fusion, intelligent control and machine learning tools and their widely availability at low cost, this special issue aims at disseminating new modelling and simulation methods for developing intelligent robotic systems and their applications. With the emerging applications to robotics, this focused section competitively selects the 10 research papers covering a spectrum of modeling of novel single robots, human-robot interactive systems, and even robotic automation process, which includes modeling of biped and wearable robots, parallel mechanisms, autonomous robots, and robot-environment interaction, as well as modeling with robot visions.

Abstract:A sensor is a device that converts a physical parameter or an environmental characteristic (e.g., temperature, distance, speed, etc.) into a signal that can be digitally measured and processed to perform specific tasks. Mobile robots need sensors to measure properties of their environment, thus allowing for safe navigation, complex perception and corresponding actions, and effective interactions with other agents that populate it. Sensors used by mobile robots range from simple tactile sensors, such as bumpers, to complex vision-based sensors such as structured light RGB-D cameras. All of them provide a digital output (e.g., a string, a set of values, a matrix, etc.) that can be processed by the robot's computer. Such output is typically obtained by discretizing one or more analog electrical signals by using an Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) included in the sensor. In this chapter we present the most common sensors used in mobile robotics, providing an introduction to their taxonomy, basic features, and specifications. The description of the functionalities and the types of applications follows a bottom-up approach: the basic principles and components on which the sensors are based are presented before describing real-world sensors, which are generally based on multiple technologies and basic devices.

Abstract:The article presents a survey of sensors relevant for robot and their sensing principles. One of the features of robot intelligence is to deal robustly with uncertainties. This is only possible when the robot is equipped with sensors; e.g., contact sensors, force sensors, distance sensors, cameras, encoders, gyroscopes. There are many applications, from different sectors that could profit from this type of technology: autonomous mobile platforms for materials handling in industry, warehouses, hospitals, etc.; forestry cutting and undergrowth management equipment; autonomous fire-fighting machines; mining machinery; advanced electrical wheel chairs; autonomous cleaning machines; security and surveillance robots. Advanced sensor systems which are now emerging in different activities from the health care services to the transportation sector and domestic services, will significantly increase the capabilities of autonomous vehicles and will enlarge their application potential.

Robot-As-A-Sensor: Forming a Sensing Network with Robots for Underground Mining Missions

Abstract:Nowadays, robots are deployed as mobile platforms equipped with sensing, communication and computing capabilities, especially in the mining industry, where they perform tasks in hazardous and repetitive environments. Despite their potential, individual robots face significant limitations when completing complex tasks that require the collaboration of multiple robots. This collaboration requires a robust wireless network to ensure operational efficiency and reliability. This paper introduces the concept of "Robot-As-A-Sensor" (RAAS), which treats the robots as mobile sensors within structures similar to Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). We later identify specific challenges in integrating RAAS technology and propose technological advancements to address these challenges. Finally, we provide an outlook about the technologies that can contribute to realising RAAS, suggesting that this approach could catalyse a shift towards safer, more intelligent, and sustainable industry practices. We believe that this innovative RAAS framework could significantly transform industries requiring advanced technological integration.

Abstract:The robotic with integrated tactile sensors can accurately perceive contact force, pressure, vibration, temperature and other tactile stimuli.Flexible tactile sensing technologies have been widely utilized in intelligent robotics for stable grasping, dexterous manipulation, object recognition and human-machine interaction.This review presents promising flexible tactile sensing technologies and their potential applications in robotics.The significance of robotic sensing and tactile sensing performance requirements are first described.The commonly used six types of sensing mechanisms of tactile sensors are briefly illustrated, followed by the progress of novel structural design and performance characteristics of several promising tactile sensors, such as highly sensitive pressure and tri-axis force sensor, flexible distributed sensor array, and multi-modal tactile sensor.Then, the applications of using tactile sensors in robotics such as object properties recognition, grasping and manipulation, and human-machine interactions are thoroughly discussed.Finally, the challenges and future prospects of robotic tactile sensing technologies are discussed.In summary, this review will be conducive to the novel design of flexible tactile sensors and is a heuristic for developing the next generation of intelligent robotics with advanced tactile sensing functions in the future.

Abstract:As a fundamental issue in robotics academia and industry, indoor autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) have been extensively studied. For AMRs, it is crucial to obtain information about their working environment and themselves, which can be realized through sensors and the extraction of corresponding information from the measurements of these sensors. The application of sensing technologies can enable mobile robots to perform localization, mapping, target or obstacle recognition, and motion tasks, etc. This paper reviews sensing technologies for autonomous mobile robots in indoor scenes. The benefits and potential problems of using a single sensor in application are analyzed and compared, and the basic principles and popular algorithms used in processing these sensor data are introduced. In addition, some mainstream technologies of multi-sensor fusion are introduced. Finally, this paper discusses the future development trends in the sensing technology for autonomous mobile robots in indoor scenes, as well as the challenges in the practical application environments.

Abstract:Autonomous robots have recently gained traction in a variety of industries due to their efficiency and possible cost savings. However, assuring the safety and dependability of these robots is critical, especially in terms of obstacle detection and avoidance. Ultrasonic sensors, which are known for their low cost, user-friendliness, and dependability, have emerged as a popular and practical solution to this problem. In this paper, the author offer a framework for using numerous ultrasonic sensors in autonomous robots to detect and avoid obstacles.In our approach, real-time sensor data processing is used to correctly identify and quantify the distances to obstacles, which subsequently guides the robot's path adjustment using obstacle avoidance algorithms. The findings show that our proposed framework for multiple ultrasonic sensor-based range and obstacle avoidance is capable of identifying and avoiding obstacles in a variety of situations. Furthermore, this study conducted a comparison analysis between our method and standard single ultrasonic sensor-based obstacle identification and avoidance approaches, indicating that our approach is more accurate, reliable, and robust.This method ensures safe and dependable navigation in a variety of applications, including mobile robots, autonomous vehicles, and drones. Overall, our research advances the development of low-cost, highly dependable autonomous robots for obstacle recognition and avoidance, allowing them to navigate difficult settings.

Abstract:The integration of advanced sensor technologies has significantly propelled the dynamic development of robotics, thus inaugurating a new era in automation and artificial intelligence. Given the rapid advancements in robotics technology, its core area—robot control technology—has attracted increasing attention. Notably, sensors and sensor fusion technologies, which are considered essential for enhancing robot control technologies, have been widely and successfully applied in the field of robotics. Therefore, the integration of sensors and sensor fusion techniques with robot control technologies, which enables adaptation to various tasks in new situations, is emerging as a promising approach. This review seeks to delineate how sensors and sensor fusion technologies are combined with robot control technologies. It presents nine types of sensors used in robot control, discusses representative control methods, and summarizes their applications across various domains. Finally, this survey discusses existing challenges and potential future directions.

Abstract:Abstract This review provides an overview of the current state‐of‐the‐art of the emerging field of flexible multifunctional sensors for wearable and robotic applications. In these application sectors, there is a demand for high sensitivity, accuracy, reproducibility, mechanical flexibility, and low cost. The ability to empower robots and future electronic skin (e‐skin) with high resolution, high sensitivity, and rapid response sensing capabilities is of interest to a broad range of applications including wearable healthcare devices, biomedical prosthesis, and human–machine interacting robots such as service robots for the elderly and electronic skin to provide a range of diagnostic and monitoring capabilities. A range of sensory mechanisms is examined including piezoelectric, pyroelectric, piezoresistive, and there is particular emphasis on hybrid sensors that provide multifunctional sensing capability. As an alternative to the physical sensors described above, optical sensors have the potential to be used as a robot or e‐skin; this includes sensory color changes using photonic crystals, liquid crystals, and mechanochromic effects. Potential future areas of research are discussed and the challenge for these exciting materials is to enhance their integration into wearables and robotic applications.

Abstract:The field of continuum robotics is rapidly developing. The development of new kinematic structures, locomotion principles and control strategies is driving the development of new types of sensors and sensing methodologies. The sensing in continuum robots can be divided into shape perception and environment perception. The environment perception is focusing on sensing the interactions between the robot and environment. These sensors are often embedded on an outer layer of the robots, so the interactions can be detected. The shape perception is sensing the robot's shape using various principles. There are three main groups of sensors that use the properties of electricity, magnetism and optics to measure the shape of the continuum robots. The sensors based on measuring the properties of electricity are often based on measuring the electrical resistance or capacitance of the flexible sensor. Sensors based on magnetism use properties of permanent magnets or coils that are attached to the robot. Their magnetic field, flux or other properties are then tracked, and shape reconstruction can be performed. The last group of sensors is mostly based on leveraging the properties of traveling light through optical fibers. There are multiple objectives of this work. Objective number one is to clearly categorize the sensors and make a clear distinction between them. Objective number two is to determine the trend and progress of the sensors used in continuum robotics. And finally, the third objective is to define the challenges that the researchers are currently facing. The challenges of sensing the shape or the interaction with the environment of continuum robots are currently in the miniaturization of existing sensors and the development of novel sensing methods.

Abstract:Herein, a perceptive of recent progress in multimodal sensing and processing systems of advanced robotics is presented, with an emphasis on fusion of multimodal sensors, data fusion algorithms, and their advanced applications. Multimodal sensors for tactile, vision, and olfactory information and data fusion algorithms (feature extraction and bioinspired fusion architecture) are reviewed, and future challenges are also discussed. Nature has proved that multiple sense and processing capabilities are critical for target recognition and race survival. As such, advanced robots that perform missions in an unstructured environment highly need organism‐similar multimodal sensing and processing systems for sophisticated unstructured environmental stimuli. Herein, recent progress in multimodal sensing and processing systems for advanced robotics is reviewed. Multimodal sensors including tactile sensors that capture surface properties of objects (i.e., thermal conductivity, temperature, softness, and electron affinity), visual sensors that capture the color and size of objects, and gas sensors that capture object smell are summarized. The multimodal data fusion algorithms that process multimodal signals from multimodal sensors to achieve object recognition and decision making are also presented. The challenges and future development of multimodal sensors and data fusion algorithms are further discussed. Advances in these areas open new avenues for advanced robotics applications in human–robot collaboration, rescue missions, garbage sorting, and intelligent prosthetics.

Abstract:Perception capability assumes significant importance for human–robot interaction. The forthcoming industrial environments will require a high level of automation to be flexible and adaptive enough to comply with the increasingly faster and low-cost market demands. Autonomous and collaborative robots able to adapt to varying and dynamic conditions of the environment, including the presence of human beings, will have an ever-greater role in this context. However, if the robot is not aware of the human position and intention, a shared workspace between robots and humans may decrease productivity and lead to human safety issues. This paper presents a survey on sensory equipment useful for human detection and action recognition in industrial environments. An overview of different sensors and perception techniques is presented. Various types of robotic systems commonly used in industry, such as fixed-base manipulators, collaborative robots, mobile robots and mobile manipulators, are considered, analyzing the most useful sensors and methods to perceive and react to the presence of human operators in industrial cooperative and collaborative applications. The paper also introduces two proofs of concept, developed by the authors for future collaborative robotic applications that benefit from enhanced capabilities of human perception and interaction. The first one concerns fixed-base collaborative robots, and proposes a solution for human safety in tasks requiring human collision avoidance or moving obstacles detection. The second one proposes a collaborative behavior implementable upon autonomous mobile robots, pursuing assigned tasks within an industrial space shared with human operators.

Abstract:The developments in sensor technology, information processing, computer science, and artificial intelligence significantly improved robots' autonomy. Robots' external perception relies on sensing technology. Thus, capturing accurate sensor information is vital for ensuring robotic security and improving human-machine interaction performance. This paper classifies the main robotic sensors, describes multi-sensor information fusion and processing and contrasts the state-of-the-art sensor technologies for collaborative robots with other state-of-the-art technologies in related fields. In addition, this paper also introduces collaborative robots' perception applications of the state-of-the-art representative products, the new designs for collaborative robots, the interactive applications of the intelligent Kinect sensor with collaborative robots, and the important applications of collaborative robots in the medical fields. Through a deep analysis of relevant information, this paper aims to introduce the integration of the state-of-the-art sensor technologies and collaborative robots, with hoping of guiding significance for the applications of robot sensors. This paper finally emphasizes the sensors' impact on robot performance and discusses future research on sensor technologies in robotics.

Abstract:The reliable operation of the sensors of robot joint drive systems (RJDs) is a key factor in ensuring the safety of equipment and personnel. Over the years, additional safety-related systems have been designed to prevent safety incidents caused by robot failures, ignoring the functional safety issues of the robot sensors themselves. In view of this, based on IEC61508, a functional safety analysis and design method for sensors of RJDs is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the hazard analysis and risk assessment clarified the goals that the safety protection function of the RJD's sensor should achieve. Then, by establishing the motor drive model and transmission model, a model-based sensor fault diagnosis and isolation strategy is proposed. Considering the fault-tolerant operation of system, a fail-operational hardware architecture of the safety-related system is designed. Markov analysis shows that the safety integrity level (SIL) of safety-related systems can reach SIL3. Finally, experiments are designed to validate the proposed fault diagnosis and fault tolerance strategy. The results show that the safety-related system can effectively locate sensor failures, realize fault-tolerant control when a single sensor fails and perform safe torque off (STO) protection when multiple sensors fail.
