Abstract:Soft robotics is an exciting field of science and technology that enables robots to manipulate objects with human-like dexterity. Soft robots can handle delicate objects with care, access remote areas, and offer realistic feedback on their handling performance. However, increased dexterity and mechanical compliance of soft robots come with the need for accurate control of the position and shape of these robots. Therefore, soft robots must be equipped with sensors for better perception of their...

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores sensing technology and its applications in the field of soft robotics. Due to their unique flexibility and adaptability, soft robots excel in handling delicate or fragile objects, but this also brings about the need for precise control and perception. To achieve efficient control and feedback, soft robots need to integrate various sensors to perceive their surrounding environment, position, force, temperature, shape, etc. The paper first introduces the actuation technologies and material choices for soft robots, including fluid actuation, dielectric elastomer actuation, contact-driven deformation, tendon-driven deformation, shape memory material actuation, and magnetic actuation, among others. It analyzes the characteristics and limitations of these actuation methods. Additionally, it discusses the energy requirements for different actuation mechanisms. Subsequently, the paper focuses on sensing technologies used for soft robots, particularly those designed for the characteristics of soft robots. It mentions several common sensing mechanisms, such as resistive sensors, piezoresistive sensors, and capacitive sensors, and demonstrates through examples how these sensors can be integrated into soft robots to monitor aspects like contact force and bending state. For instance, by integrating strain and pressure sensors into soft actuators, it is possible to estimate contact force and bending state; using liquid metal as a strain sensor embedded in fluid channels can simplify the manufacturing process and provide real-time feedback; employing multi-material 3D printing technology to create soft robots with sensing capabilities makes the integration of sensors and soft robots more seamless. In summary, the paper aims to emphasize the importance of sensing technology in soft robotics and reviews recent advancements in this field, aiming to inspire more innovation and enhance the functionality and application range of soft robots.
