Abstract:Let ğ��o be a 5-group of maximal class with major centralizer G 1 = C G â�¢ ( G 2 / G 4 ) . In this paper, we prove that the irreducible character degrees of a 5-group ğ��o of maximal class are almost determined by the irreducible character degrees of the major centralizer G 1 and show that the set of irreducible character degrees of a 5-group of maximal class is either { 1 , 5 , 5 3 } or { 1 , 5 , â€¦ , 5 k } with k â‰¥ 1 .

We callS a Cl-subset ofG, if for any isomorphism Cay(G,S) ≈ Cay(G,T) there is an α∈ Aut(G) such thatS α =T. Assume that m is a positive integer.G is called anm-Cl-group if every subsetS ofG withS =S −1 and | S | ≤m is Cl. In this paper we prove that the alternating groupA 5 is a 4-Cl-group, which was a conjecture posed by Li and Praeger.

Abstract:We find for g at most 5 a stratification of depth g-2 of the moduli space ofcurves M_g with the property that its strata are affine and the classes oftheir closures provide a Q-basis for the Chow ring of M_g. The first propertyconfirms a conjecture of one of us. The way we establish the second propertyyields new (and simpler) proofs of theorems of Faber and Izadi which, takentogether, amount to the statement that in this range the Chow ring is generatedby the lambda-class.

Abstract:We establish two characterizations of an algebraic group scheme $\bigwedge^m GL_n$ over $\mathbb{Z}$. Geometrically, the scheme $\bigwedge^m GL_n$ is a stabilizer of an explicitly given invariant form or, generally, an invariant ideal of forms. Algebraically, $\bigwedge^m GL_n$ is isomorphic (as a scheme over $\mathbb{Z}$) to a normalizer of the elementary subgroup functor $\bigwedge^m E_n$ and a normalizer of the subscheme $\bigwedge^m SL_n$. Our immediate goal is to apply both descriptions in the "sandwich classification" of overgroups of the elementary subgroup. Additionally, the results can be seen as a solution of the linear preserver problem for algebraic group schemes over $\mathbb{Z}$, providing a more functorial description that goes beyond geometry of the classical case over fields.

Abstract:Let $\Pi$ be a cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_5(\mathbb{A}_\mathbb{Q})$, and let $\Sigma = \mathrm{Ind}(\pi, \chi_2|\cdot|^{1/2}, \chi_3|\cdot|^{-1/2})$ be an automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_4(\mathbb{A}_\mathbb{Q})$ induced from the standard parabolic subgroup of the form $(2, 1, 1)$ where $\pi$ is a cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{A}_\mathbb{Q})$. Assume that $\Pi_{\infty}$ and $\Sigma_{\infty}$ are cohomological with respect to the trivial representation in which case $s=1/2$ is a critical point for the Rankin-Selberg $L$-function $L(s, \Pi \times \Sigma)$. Following Mahnkopf, we prove a result about $L(\tfrac{1}{2}, \Pi \times \Sigma)$, and as a corollary, obtain an algebraicity result for the ratio $L(1, \Pi \times \chi)/L(1, \Pi \times \chi')$, where $\chi,\chi'$ are finite order Hecke characters such that $\chi_{\infty} = \chi'_{\infty} = \mathrm{sgn}$.

Normalizer Quotients of Symmetric Groups and Inner Holomorphs

Abstract:We show that every finite group $T$ is isomorphic to a normalizer quotient $N_{S_n}(H)/H$ for some $n$ and a subgroup $H\leq S_n$. We show that this holds for all large enough $n\ge n_0(T)$ and also with $S_n$ replaced by $A_n$. The two main ingredients in the proof are a recent construction due to Cornulier and Sambale of a finite group $G$ with $\mathrm{Out}(G)\cong T$ (for any given finite group $T$) and the determination of the normalizer in $\mathrm{Sym(G)}$ of the inner holomorph $\mathrm{InHol}(G)\leq\mathrm{Sym}(G)$ for any centerless indecomposable finite group $G$, which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:Given a class ℑ of finite groups, a subgroup H of a group G is called ℑ n - normal in G if there exists a normal subgroup T of G such that HT is a normal subgroup of G and ( H ∩ T ) H G / H G is contained in the ℑ-hypercenter Z ∞ ℑ ( G/H G ) of G/H G . We obtain some results about the ℑ n -normal subgroups and use them to study the structure of some groups.

Abstract:If $A$, $B$, $C$ are subsets in a finite simple group of Lie type $G$ at least two of which are normal with $|A||B||C|$ relatively large, then we establish a stronger conclusion than $ABC = G$. This is related to a theorem of Gowers and is a generalization of a theorem of Larsen, Shalev, Tiep and the second author and Pyber.

Abstract:If $H$ is a Hall subgroup of a finite group $G$, it was proven in 1989 using the classification of finite simple groups that all the irreducible complex characters of $H$ extend to $G$ if and only if there is $N\trianglelefteq G$ such that $HN=G$ and $H\cap N=1$. In this note we offer a modular version of this result under more general hypothesis.

Abstract:We extend the computations in our prior work to find the cohomology in degree five of a congruence subgroup Gamma of SL_4(Z) with coefficients in Sym^g(K^4), twisted by a nebentype character eta, along with the action of the Hecke algebra. This is the top cuspidal degree. In this paper we take K to be a finite field of large characteristic, as a proxy for the complex numbers. For each Hecke eigenclass found, we produce the unique Galois representation that appears to be attached to it. The computations require modifications to our previous algorithms to accommodate the fact that the coefficients are not one-dimensional.

Abstract:Using the results of J. Arthur on the representation theory of classical groups with additional work by Colette Moeglin and its relation with representations of affine Hecke algebras established by the author, we show that the category of smooth complex representations of a split $p$-adic classical group and its pure inner forms is naturally decomposed into subcategories which are equivalent to a tensor product of categories of unipotent representations of classical groups (in the sense of G. Lusztig). A statement of this kind had been conjecture by G. Lusztig. All classical groups (general linear, orthogonal, symplectic and unitary groups) appear in this context. We get also parameterizations of representations of affine Hecke algebras, which seem not all to be in the literature yet. All this should also shed some light on what is known as the stable Bernstein center.

Abstract:In general, the normalizer N G ( H G ) N_G(H_G) of a maximal torus H G H_G in a semisimple complex Lie group G G does not admit a presentation as a semidirect product of H G H_G and the corresponding Weyl group W G W_G . Meanwhile, such splitting exists for classical groups corresponding to the root systems A l A_\ell , B l B_\ell , D l D_\ell . For the remaining classical groups corresponding to the root systems C l C_\ell , there still exists an embedding of the Tits extension W G T W^T_G of W G W_G into the normalizer N G ( H G ) N_G(H_G) . Here an explicit unified construction is proposed for the lifts of the Weyl groups into normalizers of maximal tori for general linear and orthogonal Lie groups via embedding into the general linear groups. For the symplectic group S p 2 l \mathrm {Sp}_{2\ell } , an explanation of the impossibility of embedding W S p 2 l W_{\mathrm {Sp}_{2\ell }} into the normalizer N S p 2 l ( H S p 2 l ) N_{\mathrm {Sp}_{2\ell }}(H_{\mathrm {Sp}_{2\ell }}) is suggested. Also, explicit formulas are computed for the adjoint action of the lifts of the Weyl groups on g = L i e ( G ) \mathfrak {g}=\mathrm {Lie}(G) . Finally, examples of Weyl groups lifts are given for the groups closely associated with classical Lie groups.

The multiple holomorph of centerless groups

Abstract:Let $G$ be a group. The holomorph $\mathrm{Hol}(G)$ may be defined as the normalizer of the subgroup of either left or right translations in the group of all permutations of $G$. The multiple holomorph $\mathrm{NHol}(G)$ is in turn defined as the normalizer of the holomorph. Their quotient $T(G) = \mathrm{NHol}(G)/\mathrm{Hol}(G)$ has been computed for various families of groups $G$. In this paper, we consider the case when $G$ is centerless, and we show that $T(G)$ must have exponent at most $2$ unless $G$ satisfies some fairly strong conditions. As applications of our main theorem, we are able to show that $T(G)$ has order $2$ for all almost simple groups $G$, and that $T(G)$ has exponent at most $2$ for all centerless perfect or complete groups $G$.

Super Kähler structures on the complex Abelian Lie supergroups

Abstract:We consider a real Abelian Lie supergroup $G$ acting on its complexification $M$, equipped with a $G$-invariant super Kähler form. We extend the scheme of classical geometric quantization to this setting and construct a unitary $G$-representation. We show that the occurrences of its irreducible subrepresentations are governed by the image of the moment map of the super Kähler form. As an application, we construct a Gelfand model of $G$, namely a unitary $G$-representation in which every unitary irreducible representation occurs exactly once.
