Abstract:In this Ph.D. thesis several topics in doubly special relativity are explored. The starting point of this theory is very different from other perspectives: it is not a fundamental theory, but it is considered a low energy limit of a quantum gravity theory that tries to study its possible residual elements. In particular, in doubly special relativity the Einstenian relativity principle is generalized, adding to the speed of light $c$ another relativistic invariant, the Planck length $l_p$. This idea can really have possible experimental observations, giving place to what is known as quantum gravity phenomenology. On the other hand, doubly special relativity implies the existence of deformed composition laws for energy and momentum, which leads to a spacetime with nonlocal ingredients, an element that also appears in other approaches of quantum gravity. In particular in this thesis we consider: the role that the changes of momentum variables play in a deformed relativistic kinematics; a novel connection between the $\kappa$-Poincar\'e model and a curved momentum space; a new spacetime, which turns out to be noncommutative, making the interactions local; the possible time delay in the flight of photons as a consequence of a deformed kinematics, depending on whether observables are defined on a commutative or on a noncommutative spacetime; some computations in quantum field theory with a simple ansatz for the modified Feynman rules corresponding to a particle process; the generalization of the geometrical approach for a curved spacetime.

Abstract:A modern elementary introduction to special relativity for advanced school children or first-year university students, in Russian. I try to demonstrate that relativity does not contradict common sense; on the contrary, it follows from common sense logically. I discuss Minkowski space-time geometry in some detail. Geometrical approach, with few simple formulas but many pictures, makes results of the theory intuitively obvious.

Relativistic deformed kinematics: from flat to curved spacetimes

Abstract:Doubly special relativity has been studied for the last twenty years as a way to go beyond the special relativistic kinematics, trying to capture residual effects of a quantum gravity theory. In particular, in doubly special relativity the Einstenian relativity principle is generalized, adding to the speed of light another relativistic invariant, the Planck energy. There are several papers in the literature showing a connection between this deformed kinematics and a curved momentum space. Here we review how such kinematics can be derived from geometrical ingredients in a rigorous way, and how they can be generalized when regarding a curved spacetime. For the last aim, it is mandatory to consider a particular geometry for all phase-space variables, the so-called generalized Hamilton spaces. This construction allows us to define a spacetime in these theories, which in fact depends on the momenta. Then, starting from such a momentum dependent metric, we also revise several concepts of general relativity, with the final aim of establishing a self-consistent geometrical structure from which quantum gravity phenomenology can be explored.

Abstract:Zbigniew Oziewicz was a pioneer of the 4D space-time approach to covariant relative velocities. In the 1980s (according to private correspondence) he discovered two types of 4D relative velocities: binary and ternary, along with the rules for adding them. They were first published in conference materials in 2004, and the second time in a peer-reviewed journal in 2007. These physically logical and mathematically precise concepts are so subtle that Oziewicz's numerous preprints have yet to receive the recognition they deserve. This work was planned to be a more review, but a thorough review of the little-known results was made in an original synthetic manner with numerous generalizations. The Part I presents the Oziewicz-Świerk-Bolós (and Matolsci or Bini-Carini-Jantzen) binary relative velocity and the Oziewicz-Ungar-Dragan (also Celakoska-Chakmakov-Petrushevski on the basis of Urbantke, as well as Wyk) ternary relative velocity. The Einstein-Oziewicz and Einstein-Minkowski velocities, which are a four-dimensional generalization of Einstein velocities addition, also have a ternary character. This also applies to Oziewicz-Minkowski relative velocity, which is a time-like equivalent (generalization) of the canonical ternary velocity. It turns out that the Lorentz transformation of velocity itself is already ternary anchored. This fact is explicitly revealed by the manifestly covariant Lorentz transformation of velocity, which is the main tool of the work.

Abstract:This special feature, dedicated to Michael J. Duff FRS on the occasion of his 70th birthday, concerns topics in 'Quantum gravity, branes and M-theory'. These three intertwining subjects have been central to Duff's work; indeed many of his contributions have come to define significant aspects of what we actually mean by these terms. From the discovery of Weyl anomalies to recognising superstrings in 10 dimensions as a special case of membranes in an 11-dimensional M-theory, Duff's insights have shaped major developments across these themes. So it is an apposite setting for such a celebration and we are delighted to be able to include in this collection contributions from many of the pioneers of quantum gravity, branes and M-theory. The breadth of these topics has placed little constraint on the multiplicity of ideas appearing in these pages, from astrophysical black holes to chaotic condensed matter. Again, this is fitting as Duff's scientific remit spans a remarkable diversity of motifs, from the fundamentals of M-theory to entanglement in quantum information.

This paper presents a simple, exact resolution using only special relativity and the equivalence principle. Two earlier approximate solutions are considered, along with some background review to render the article self-contained. It is hoped that this material will be suitable for classroom instruction.

Abstract:Special relativity was discovered at the eve of the century, but finds its roots in the 19th century efforts to understand the optics and electromagnetism of moving bodies. These roots are reviewed in Parts 1 and 2, the latter being specially devoted to the works of Lorentz and of Poincare up to 1904. Part 3 contains a detailed comparison of the works of Einstein and of Poincare in 1905. It is shown that both authors succeeded in constructing a coherent and fully relativistic theory, although their ideas about the ether were radically different. In Part 4, the question of the respective merits of the three potential fathers of special relativity (i.e. Lorentz, Poincare, Einstein) is discussed again, at the light of the preceding analysis and of the "post-1905" developments of the theory.

Aspects of clock synchronization in relativistic kinematics -- a tutorial

Abstract:This tutorial, addressing physics teachers and undergraduate students, aims at clarifying some aspects of time in special relativity. In particular, time dilation is usually presented only as the well-known ratio of lab time over proper time, $R$. Above ratio is useful, e.g. for describing the decay length of an unstable particle in the lab. But essential characteristics of time dilation, missed out in many textbooks, are manifest in the differences (quadratic, absolute and relative) between lab time and proper time. After an introduction to the basics, we regard the movement of a clock over a fixed spatial distance $\Delta x$. Explicit formulae are given for $R$ and for the differences, and their behaviour as functions of the velocity is discussed and plotted. Approximate formulae are given for very slow movements. Time synchronization within an inertial system by "slowly" moving a clock over a finite distance $\Delta x$, mentioned vaguely in some textbooks, may quantitatively be comprehended by requiring the time difference to be less than the clock's time resolution. We derive explicit formulae for the maximal velocity obeying these constraints (to the best of our knowledge not presented elsewhere).

Abstract:We start this short note by remembering the beginnings of the Warsaw School of Quantum Optics, evidently stimulated by Iwo Bialynicki-Birula at the Warsaw University, and then Centre for Theoretical Physics of Polish Academy of Sciences, and Adam Kujawski and Zofia Bialynicka-Birula at the Institute of Physics of Polish Academy of Sciences. In the theoretical approaches of the Warsaw School Quantum Field Theory was always present, and Quantum Optics was considered to be Applied Quantum Electrodynamics (QED). All of us who grew up in this fantastic community have carried and are still carrying the gospel to others. In particular, now QED began her run on the red carpet of Super Instense Laser Matter Interactions, Attosecond-physics, and Ultrafast Laser Physics, in general. We will elaborate on the recent progress in this direction, and on the open questions towards future investigations. This paper celebrates the 90th birthday of Prof. Iwo Bialynicki-Birula, our QED guru!

Abstract:The status of experimental tests of general relativity is reviewed on the occasion of its 75th anniversary. Einstein's equivalence principle is well supported by experiments such as the Eötvös experiment, tests of special relativity, and the gravitational redshift experiment. Tests of general relativity have reached high precision, including the light deflection and the perihelion advance of Mercury, proposed by Einstein 75 years ago, and new tests such as the Shapiro time delay and the Nordtvedt effect in lunar motion. Gravitational wave damping has been detected to an accuracy of 1 percent on the basis of measurements of the binary pulsar. The status of the "fifth force" is discussed, along with the frontiers of experimental relativity, including proposals for testing relativistic gravity with advanced technology and spacecraft.

Angularly Deformed Special Relativity and its Results for Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:In this paper, the deformed Special Relativity, which leads to an essentially new theoretical context of quantum mechanics, is presented. The formulation of the theory arises from a straightforward analogy with the Special Relativity, but its foundations are laid through the hypothesis on breakdown of the velocity-momentum parallelism which affects onto the Einstein equivalence principle between mass and energy of a relativistic particle. Furthermore, the derivation is based on the technique of an eikonal equation whose well-confirmed physical role lays the foundations of both optics and quantum mechanics. As a result, we receive the angular deformation of Special Relativity which clearly depicts the new deformation-based theoretical foundations of physics, and, moreover, offers both constructive and consistent phenomenological discussion of the theoretical issues such like imaginary mass and formal superluminal motion predicted in Special Relativity for this case. In the context of the relativistic theory, presence of deformation does not break the Poincaré invariance, in particular the Lorentz symmetry, and provides essential modifications of both bosons described through the Klein-Gordon equation and fermions satisfying the Dirac equation. On the other hand, on the level of discussion of quantum theory, there arises the concept of emergent deformed space-time, wherein the presence of angular deformation elucidates a certain new insight into the nature of spin, as well as both the Heisenberg uncertainty principle and the Schrödinger wave equation.

Abstract:General relativity came to life in 1915, when Albert Einstein formulated his field equations. These unify space, time, and gravitation, where the latter acts through curvature. Thereby the laws of physics obtain a geometric nature. Mathematical general relativity investigates spacetimes, which are manifolds equipped with a Lorentzian metric obeying the related Einstein-matter systems of nonlinear partial differential equations. The fruitful interactions of mathematics and physics in general relativity have produced breakthroughs in all the related research fields. This volume includes 14 articles presenting aspects of the most important general relativity research of the past 100 years. Among them we find cosmological and non-cosmological questions, the Cauchy problem for the Einstein equations, stability results, black holes and their formation, gravitational waves and their memory effect, the concept of energy, and the asymptotics of spacetimes. Through geometric analysis and advanced theory of nonlinear partial differential equations, long-standing problems have been solved lately that had remained locked since the beginnings of this beautiful theory of general relativity. Many more burning questions have been formulated and are yet to be answered.

Abstract:The development of both special and general relativity is accomplished in a series of 6 papers using a simple approach. The purpose is to explain the how and why of relativity to a broad public, and to be useful for students of physics by providing alternate ways to develop and view relativistic phenomena. In this first paper, the rules for special relativity are developed to explain velocity-related time dilation and length contraction, and the interchangeable nature of mass and energy. In subsequent papers, conservation of energy is applied to show how gravity affects time speed, fall velocities, and length measurements, the effect known as the Shapiro Time Delay, the precession of satellites and planets, gravitational lensing, the appearance of Lorentz contraction and a simple resolution of the Ehrenfest paradox.

Abstract:We consider three possible approaches to formulating coordinate transformations on position space associated with non-linear Lorentz transformations on momentum space. The first approach uses the definition of velocity and gives the standard Lorentz transformation. In the second method, we translate the behavior in momentum space into position space by means of Fourier transform. Under certain conditions, it also gives the standard Lorentz transformation on position space. The third approach investigates the covariance of the modified Klein-Gordon equation obtained from the dispersion relation.
