Abstract:We show that one can enumerate the vertices of the convex hull of integer points in polytopes whose constraint matrices have bounded and nonzero subdeterminants, in time polynomial in the dimension and encoding size of the polytope. This extends a previous result by Artmann et al. who showed that integer linear optimization in such polytopes can be done in polynomial time.

Abstract:Let $ G = (V, E) $ be a simple, connected graph with vertex set $ V(G) $ and $ E(G) $ edge set of $ G $. For two vertices $ a $ and $ b $ in a graph $ G $, the distance $ d(a, b) $ from $ a $ to $ b $ is the length of shortest path $ a-b $ path in $ G $. A $ k $-ordered partition of vertices of $ G $ is represented as $ {R}{p} = \{{R}{p_1}, {R}{p_2}, \dots, {R}{p_k}\} $ and the representation $ r(a|{R}{p}) $ of a vertex $ a $ with respect to $ {R}{p} $ is the vector $ (d(a|{R}{p_1}), d(a|{R}{p_2}), \dots, d(a|{R}{p_k})) $. The partition is called a resolving partition of $ G $ if $ r(a|{R}{p}) \ne r(b|{R}{p}) $ for all distinct $ a, b\in V(G) $. The partition dimension of a graph, denoted by $ pd(G) $, is the cardinality of a minimum resolving partition of $ G $. Computing precise and constant values for the partition dimension poses a interesting problem; therefore, it is possible to compute an upper bound for the partition dimension within a general family of graphs. In this paper, we studied partition dimension of the some families of convex polytopes, specifically $ \mathbb{T}_n $, $ \mathbb{U}_n $, $ \mathbb{V}_n $, and $ \mathbb{A}_n $, and proved that these graphs have constant partition dimension.

Newton polytopes of dual $k$-Schur polynomials

Abstract:Rado's theorem about permutahedra and dominance order on partitions reveals that each Schur polynomial is M-convex, or equivalently, it has a saturated Newton polytope and this polytope is a generalized permutahedron as well. In this paper we show that the support of each dual $k$-Schur polynomial indexed by a $k$-bounded partition coincides with that of the Schur polynomial indexed by the same partition, and hence the two polynomials share the same saturated Newton polytope. The main result is based on our recursive algorithm to generate a semistandard $k$-tableau for a given shape and $k$-weight. As consequences, we obtain the M-convexity of dual $k$-Schur polynomials, affine Stanley symmetric polynomials and cylindric skew Schur polynomials.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that if we decompose a polygon into two smaller polygons, then by comparing the number of extremal vertices in the original polygon versus the sum of the two smaller polygons, we can gain at most two globally extremal vertices in the smaller polygons, as well as at most two locally extremal vertices. We then will derive two discrete Four-Vertex Theorems from our results.

Abstract:We study the complexity of computing the mixed-integer hull conv(P∩(Zn×Rd)) of a polyhedron P. Given an inequality description, with one integer variable, the mixed-integer hull can have exponentially many vertices and facets in d. For n,d fixed, we give an algorithm to find the mixed-integer hull in polynomial time. Given a finite set V⊆Qn+d, with n fixed, we compute a vertex description of the mixed-integer hull of conv(V) in polynomial time and give bounds on the number of vertices of the mixed-integer hull.

On the connected (sub)partition polytope

Abstract:Let $k$ be a positive integer and let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices. A connected $k$-subpartition of $G$ is a collection of $k$ pairwise disjoint sets (a.k.a. classes) of vertices in $G$ such that each set induces a connected subgraph. The connected $k$-partition polytope of $G$, denoted by $P(G,k)$, is defined as the convex hull of the incidence vectors of all connected $k$-subpartitions of $G$. Many applications arising in off-shore oil-drilling, forest planning, image processing, cluster analysis, political districting, police patrolling, and biology are modeled in terms of finding connected (sub)partitions of a graph. This study focus on the facial structure of $P(G,k)$ and the computational complexity of the corresponding separation problems. We first propose a set of valid inequalities having non-null coefficients associated with a single class that extends and generalizes the ones in the literature of related problems, show sufficient conditions for these inequalities to be facet-defining, and design a polynomial-time separation algorithm for them. We also devise two sets of inequalities that consider multiple classes, prove when they define facets, and study the computational complexity of associated separation problems.

Polytopes with low excess degree

Abstract:We study the existence and structure of $d$-polytopes for which the number $f_1$ of edges is small compared to the number $f_0$ of vertices. Our results are more elegantly expressed in terms of the excess degree of the polytope, defined as $2f_1-df_0$. We show that the excess degree of a $d$-polytope cannot lie in the range $[d+3,2d-7]$, complementing the known result that values in the range $[1,d-3]$ are impossible. In particular, many pairs $(f_0,f_1)$ are not realised by any polytope. For $d$-polytopes with excess degree $d-2$, strong structural results are known; we establish comparable results for excess degrees $d$, $d+2$, and $2d-6$. Frequently, in polytopes with low excess degree, say at most $2d-6$, the nonsimple vertices all have the same degree and they form either a face or a missing face. We show that excess degree $d+1$ is possible only for $d=3,5$, or $7$, complementing the known result that an excess degree $d-1$ is possible only for $d=3$ or $5$.

Abstract:The M-convexity of dual Schubert polynomials was first proven by Huh, Matherne, Mészáros, and St. Dizier in 2022. We give a full characterization of the supports of dual Schubert polynomials, which yields an elementary alternative proof of the M-convexity result, and furthermore strengthens it by explicitly characterizing the vertices of their Newton polytopes combinatorially.

Abstract:The convex hulls of face-vertex incident vectors of 3-face-colorable convex polytopes are computed. It is found that every such convex hull is a $d$-polytope with $d+2$ or $d+3$ vertices. Utilizing Gale transform and Gale diagram, we calculate its combinatorial structure. Finally, a necessary and sufficient criterion for combinatorial equivalence of two such convex hulls is given.

Abstract:The matching polytope of a graph $G$ is the convex hull of the indicator vectors of the matchings on $G$. We characterize the graphs whose associated matching polytopes are Gorenstein, and then prove that all Gorenstein matching polytopes possess the integer decomposition property. As a special case study, we examine the matching polytopes of wheel graphs and show that they are not Gorenstein, but do possess the integer decomposition property.

Abstract:We study the natural extended-variable formulation for the disjunction of $n+1$ polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We demonstrate that the convex hull $D$ in the natural extended-variable space $\mathbb{R}^{d+n}$ is given by full optimal big-M lifting (i) when $d\leq 2$ (and that it is not generally true for $d\geq 3$), and also (ii) under some technical conditions, when the polytopes have a common facet-describing constraint matrix, for arbitrary $d\geq 1$ and $n\geq 1$. We give a broad family of examples with $d\geq 3$ and $n=1$, where the convex hull is not described after employing all full optimal big-M lifting inequalities, but it is described after one round of MIR inequalities. Additionally, we give some general results on the polyhedral structure of $D$, and we demonstrate that all facets of $D$ can be enumerated in polynomial time when $d$ is fixed.

On the Combinatorial Complexity of Approximating Polytopes

Abstract:Approximating convex bodies succinctly by convex polytopes is a fundamental problem in discrete geometry. A convex body $K$ of diameter $\mathrm{diam}(K)$ is given in Euclidean $d$-dimensional space, where $d$ is a constant. Given an error parameter $\varepsilon > 0$, the objective is to determine a polytope of minimum combinatorial complexity whose Hausdorff distance from $K$ is at most $\varepsilon \cdot \mathrm{diam}(K)$. By combinatorial complexity we mean the total number of faces of all dimensions of the polytope. A well-known result by Dudley implies that $O(1/\varepsilon^{(d-1)/2})$ facets suffice, and a dual result by Bronshteyn and Ivanov similarly bounds the number of vertices, but neither result bounds the total combinatorial complexity. We show that there exists an approximating polytope whose total combinatorial complexity is $\tilde{O}(1/\varepsilon^{(d-1)/2})$, where $\tilde{O}$ conceals a polylogarithmic factor in $1/\varepsilon$. This is a significant improvement upon the best known bound, which is roughly $O(1/\varepsilon^{d-2})$. Our result is based on a novel combination of both old and new ideas. First, we employ Macbeath regions, a classical structure from the theory of convexity. The construction of our approximating polytope employs a new stratified placement of these regions. Second, in order to analyze the combinatorial complexity of the approximating polytope, we present a tight analysis of a width-based variant of Bárány and Larman's economical cap covering. Finally, we use a deterministic adaptation of the witness-collector technique (developed recently by Devillers et al.) in the context of our stratified construction.

Abstract:We consider, for complete bipartite graphs, the convex hulls of characteristic vectors of all matchings, extended by a binary entry indicating whether the matching contains two specific edges. This polytope is associated with the quadratic matching problem with a single linearized quadratic term. We provide a complete irredundant inequality description, which settles a conjecture by Klein [ Combinatorial Optimization with One Quadratic Term , Ph.D. thesis, TU Dortmund, Dortmund, Germany]. In addition, we also derive facetness and separation results for the polytopes. The completeness proof is based on a geometric relationship to a matching polytope of a nonbipartite graph. Using standard techniques, we finally extend the result to capacitated $b$-matchings.

Abstract:We consider the problem of characterizing the convex hull of the graph of a bilinear function $f$ on the $n$-dimensional unit cube $[0,1]^n$. Extended formulations for this convex hull are obtained by taking subsets of the facets of the Boolean Quadric Polytope (BQP). Extending existing results, we propose a systematic study of properties of $f$ that guarantee that certain classes of BQP facets are sufficient for an extended formulation. We use a modification of Zuckerberg's geometric method for proving convex hull characterizations [Geometric proofs for convex hull defining formulations, Operations Research Letters \textbf{44} (2016), 625--629] to prove some initial results in this direction. In particular, we provide small-sized extended formulations for bilinear functions whose corresponding graph is either a cycle with arbitrary edge weights or a clique or an almost clique with unit edge weights.

Abstract:Very recently, Galashin, Postnikov, and Williams introduced the notion of higher secondary polytopes, generalizing the secondary polytope of Gelfand, Kapranov, and Zelevinsky. Given an $n$-point configuration $\mathcal{A}$ in $\mathbb{R}^{d-1}$, they define a family of convex $(n-d)$-dimensional polytopes $\widehat{\Sigma}_{1}, \ldots, \widehat{\Sigma}_{n-d}$. The $1$-skeletons of this family of polytopes are the flip graphs of certain combinatorial configurations which generalize triangulations of $\text{conv} \mathcal{A}$. We restrict our attention to $d=2$. First, we relate the $1$-skeleton of the Minkowski sum $\widehat{\Sigma}_{k} + \widehat{\Sigma}_{k-1}$ to the flip graph of "hypertriangulations" of the deleted $k$-sum of $\mathcal{A}$ when $\mathcal{A}$ consists of distinct points. Second, we compute the diameter of $\widehat{\Sigma}_{k}$ and $\widehat{\Sigma}_{k}+\widehat{\Sigma}_{k-1}$ for all $k$.

Abstract:Given any polytope $P$ and any generic linear functional ${\bf c} $, one obtains a directed graph $G(P,{\bf c})$ from the 1-skeleton of $P$ by orienting each edge $e(u,v)$ from $u$ to $v$ for ${\bf c} (u) < {\bf c} ( v)$. For $P$ a simple polytope and $G(P,{\bf c})$ the Hasse diagram of a lattice $L$, the join of any collection $S$ of elements which all cover a common element $u$ in $L$ is proven to equal the sink of the smallest face of $P$ containing $u$ and all of the elements of $S$. The author conjectures for such $G(P,{\bf c})$ that no directed path in $G(P,{\bf c})$ ever revisits any facet of $P$. This would imply for such $P$ and ${\bf c}$ that the simplex method for linear programming is efficient under all possible pivot rules. This conjecture is proven for 3-polytopes and for spindles. For simple polytopes in which $G(P,{\bf c})$ is the Hasse diagram of a lattice $L$, the order complex of each open interval in $L$ is proven homotopy equivalent to a ball or a sphere. Applications are given to the weak Bruhat order, the Tamari lattice, and the Cambrian lattices. This paper concludes with an appendix by Dominik Preußproving the monotone Hirsch conjecture for $P$ a simple polytope and $G(P,{\bf c})$ the Hasse diagram of a lattice. This confirms one of the main consequences that the author's conjecture would have.

Abstract:Efficiently enumerating all the extreme points of a polytope identified by a system of linear inequalities is a well-known challenge issue.We consider a special case and present an algorithm that enumerates all the extreme points of a bisubmodular polyhedron in $\mathcal{O}(n^4|V|)$ time and $\mathcal{O}(n^2)$ space complexity, where $ n$ is the dimension of underlying space and $V$ is the set of outputs. We use the reverse search and signed poset linked to extreme points to avoid the redundant search. Our algorithm is a generalization of enumerating all the extreme points of a base polyhedron which comprises some combinatorial enumeration problems.
