Abstract:We give a short proof of the fact that bounded earthquakes of the unit disk induce quasisymmetric maps of the unit circle. By a similar method, we show that symmetric maps are induced by bounded earthquakes with asymptotically trivial measures.

Abstract:We study earthquake deformations on Teichmüller space associated with simple closed curves of the once-punctured torus. We describe two methods to get an explicit form of the earthquake deformation for any simple closed curve. The first method is rooted in linear recurrence relations, the second in hyperbolic geometry. The two methods align, providing both an algebraic and geometric interpretation of the earthquake deformations. We convert the expressions to other coordinate systems for Teichmüller space to examine earthquake deformations further. Two families of curves are used as examples. Examining the limiting behavior of each gives insight into earthquakes about measured geodesic laminations, of which simple closed curves are a special case.

Abstract:Thurston's earthquake theorem asserts that every orientation-preserving homeomorphism of the circle admits an extension to the hyperbolic plane which is a (left or right) earthquake. The purpose of these notes is to provide a proof of Thurston's earthquake theorem, using the bi-invariant geometry of the Lie group $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb R)$, which is also called Anti-de Sitter three-space. The involved techniques are elementary, and no background knowledge is assumed apart from some two-dimensional hyperbolic geometry.

Best Lipschitz maps and Earthquakes

Abstract:This is the third paper in a series in which we prove Thurston's conjectural duality between best Lipschitz maps and transverse measures. In the second paper we found a special class of best Lipschitz maps between hyperbolic surfaces (infinity harmonic maps), which induce dual Lie algebra valued transverse measures with support on Thurston's canonical lamination. The present paper examines these Lie algebra valued measures in greater detail. For any measured lamination we are led to define a Lie algebra valued measure and conversely every Lie algebra valued transverse measure arrises from this process. Furthermore, we show that such measures are infinitesimal earthquakes. This construction provides a natural correspondence between best Lipschitz maps and earthquakes.

Earthquake theorem for cluster algebras of finite type

Abstract:We introduce a cluster algebraic generalization of Thurston's earthquake map for the cluster algebras of finite type, which we call the \emph{cluster earthquake map}. It is defined by gluing exponential maps, which is modeled after the earthquakes along ideal arcs. We prove an analogue of the earthquake theorem, which states that the cluster earthquake map gives a homeomorphism between the spaces of $\mathbb{R}^\mathrm{trop}$- and $\mathbb{R}_{>0}$-valued points of the cluster $\mathcal{X}$-variety. For those of type $A_n$ and $D_n$, the cluster earthquake map indeed recovers the earthquake maps for marked disks and once-punctured marked disks, respectively. Moreover, we investigate certain asymptotic behaviors of the cluster earthquake map, which give rise to "continuous deformations" of the Fock--Goncharov fan.

Stationary measures on the circle from hyperbolic surfaces with cusps cannot be straightened by quasi-symmetries

Abstract:Stationary measures on the circle that arise from a large class of random walks on the fundamental group of a finite-area complete hyperbolic surface with cusps are singular with respect to the Lebesgue measure. In particular, it is sufficient for singularity that a stationary measure satisfies an exponential decay for cusp excursions with excursions being measured in the path metric on horocycles bounding cusps. In this note, we settle a conjecture of McMullen by proving that the singularity of stationary measures satisfying such exponential decay is quasi-symmetrically stable, that is under push-forward by any quasi-symmetry of the circle the measure remains singular.

Conformal Geometry and Dynamics of the American Mathematical Society

Abstract:In this paper we study the typical speed of a generic earthquake trajectory leaving compact sets in the moduli space of the once-punctured torus. Mirzakhani showed that the earthquake flow is measurably equivalent to the horocyclic flow, which has been studied extensively. Our main result shows that the earthquake flow and the horocyclic flow behave very differently in cusp excursions. In particular, we prove a relation between the systole function and continued fractions and discuss the cusp excursions of earthquake trajectories.

Abstract:We define deformations of certain geometric objects in hyperbolic 3-space. Such an object starts life as a hyperbolic plane with a measured geometric lamination. Initially the hyperbolic plane is embedded as a standard hyperbolic subspace. Given a complex number t, we obtain a corresponding object in hyperbolic 3-space by earthquaking along the lamination, parametrized by the real part of t, and then bending along the image lamination, parametrized by the complex part of t. In the literature, it is usually assumed that there is a quasifuchsian group that preserves the structure, but this paper is more general and makes no such assumption. Our deformation is holomorphic, as in the lambda-lemma, which is a result that underlies the results in this paper. Our deformation is used to produce a new, more natural proof of Sullivan's theorem: that, under standard topological hypotheses, the boundary of the convex hull in hyperbolic 3-space of the complement of an open subset U of the 2-sphere is quasi-conformally equivalent to U, and that, furthermore, the constant of quasiconformality is a universal constant. Our paper presents a precise statement of Sullivan's Theorem. We also generalize much of McMullen's Disk Theorem, describing certain aspects of the parameter space for certain parametrized spaces of 2-dimensional hyperbolic structures.
The infinitesimal earthquake theorem for vector fields on the circle

Abstract:We prove that any continuous vector field on a circle is the extension in a suitable sense, of a unique infinitesimal earthquake of the hyperbolic plane. Furthermore, we obtain other extension results when the vector field is assumed only to be upper or lower semicontinuous. This leads to a generalization of Kerckhoff's and Gardiner's infinitesimal earthquake theorems to a broader setting, using a completely novel approach. The proof is based on the geometry of the dual of Minkowski three-space, also called Half-pipe three-geometry. In this way, we obtain a simple characterization of Zygmund vector fields on the circle in terms of width of convex hulls.

Singular limit analysis of a model for earthquake faulting

Abstract:In this paper we consider the one dimensional spring-block model describing earthquake faulting. By using geometric singular perturbation theory and the blow-up method we provide a detailed description of the periodicity of the earthquake episodes. In particular, the limit cycles arise from a degenerate Hopf bifurcation whose degeneracy is due to an underlying Hamiltonian structure that leads to large amplitude oscillations. We use a Poincaré compactification to study the system near infinity. At infinity the critical manifold loses hyperbolicity with an exponential rate. We use an adaptation of the blow-up method to recover the hyperbolicity. This enables the identification of a new attracting manifold that organises the dynamics at infinity. This in turn leads to the formulation of a conjecture on the behaviour of the limit cycles as the time-scale separation increases. We illustrate our findings with numerics and suggest an outline of the proof of this conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the dynamical uniform boundedness principle over a family of rational maps with certain nontrivial automorphisms. Specifically, we consider a family of rational maps of an arbitrary degree $d\ge 2$ whose automorphism group contains the cyclic group of order $d$. We prove that a subfamily of this family satisfies the dynamical uniform boundedness principle.

Abstract:Let $\lambda_-$ and $\lambda_+$ be two bounded measured laminations on the hyperbolic disk $\mathbb H^2$, which "strongly fill" (definition below). We consider the left earthquakes along $\lambda_-$ and $\lambda_+$, considered as maps from the universal Teichmüller space $\mathcal T$ to itself, and we prove that the composition of those left earthquakes has a fixed point. The proof uses anti-de Sitter geometry. Given a quasi-symmetric homeomorphism $u:{\mathbb RP}^1\to {\mathbb RP}^1$, the boundary of the convex hull in $AdS^3$ of its graph in ${\mathbb RP}^1\times{\mathbb RP}^1\simeq \partial AdS^3$ is the disjoint union of two embedded copies of the hyperbolic plane, pleated along measured geodesic laminations. Our main result is that any pair of bounded measured laminations that "strongly fill" can be obtained in this manner.

Abstract:In this homage to Einstein's 144th birthday we propose a novel quantization prescription, where the paths of a path-integral are not random, but rather solutions of a geodesic equation in a random background. We show that this change of perspective can be made mathematically equivalent to the usual formulations of non-relativistic quantum mechanics. To conclude, we comment on conceptual issues, such as quantum gravity coupled to matter and the quantum equivalence principle.

Abstract:We present a detailed numerical study of certain fundamental aspects of a one-dimensional homogeneous, deterministic Burridge-Knopoff model. The model is described by a massive wave equation, in which the key nonlinearity is associated with the stick-slip velocity-weakening friction force at the interface between tectonic plates. In this paper, we present results for the statistical distribution of slipping events in the limit of a very long fault and infinitesimally slow driving rates. Typically, we find that the magnitude distribution of smaller events is consistent with the Gutenberg-Richter law, while the larger events occur in excess of this distribution. The crossover from smaller to larger events is identified with a correlation length describing the transition from localized to delocalized events. We also find that there is a sharp upper cutoff describing the maximum large event. We identify how the correlation length and this upper cutoff scale with the parameters in the model. We find that both are independent of system size, while both do depend on the spatial discretization. In addition to the magnitude distribution, we present a series of measurements of other seismologically relevant quantities, including the event duration, the size of the rupture zone, and the energy release, and discuss the relationship between our measurements and the corresponding empirical laws in seismology.

Abstract:We construct a general class of modified Ellis-Bronnikov wormholes, where one asymptotic Minkowski region is replaced by a bounded 2-sphere core, characterized by an asymptotic finite areal radius. We pursue an in-depth analysis of the resulting geometry, outlining that geodesic completeness is also guaranteed when the area function asymptotically shrinks to zero. Moreover, we perform an analysis of the circular orbits present in our model and conclude that stable circular orbits are allowed in the bounded region. As a consequence, a stable light ring may exist in the inner region and trapped orbits may appear within this bounded region. Such internal structure suggests that the bounded region can trap perturbations. Then, we study the evolution of scalar perturbations, bringing out how these geometric configurations can in principle affect the time-domain profiles of quasinormal modes, pointing out the distinctive features with respect to other black hole or wormhole geometries. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.110.044058 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:We show that for each fixed dimension $d\geq 2$, the set of $d$-dimensional klt elliptic varieties with numerically trivial canonical bundle is bounded up to isomorphism in codimension one, provided that the torsion index of the canonical class is bounded and the elliptic fibration admits a rational section. This case builds on an analogous boundedness result for the set of rationally connected log Calabi-Yau pairs with bounded torsion index. In dimension $3$, we prove the more general statement that the set of $\epsilon$-lc pairs $(X,B)$ with $-(K_X +B)$ nef and rationally connected $X$ is bounded up to isomorphism in codimension one.
