Abstract:In the present article, the author shows that Faltings' annihilator theorem holds for any Noetherian ring $A$ if $A$ is universally catenary; all the formal fibers of all the localizations of $A$ are Cohen-Macaulay; and the Cohen-Macaulay locus of each finitely generated $A$-algebra is open.

Abstract:Let $(R, \frak m)$ be a Noetherian local ring. This paper deals with the annihilator of Artinian local cohomology modules $H^i_{\frak m}(M)$ in the relation with the structure of the base ring $R$, for non negative integers $i$ and finitely generated $R$-modules $M$. Firstly, the catenarity and the unmixedness of local rings are characterized via the compatibility of annihilator of top local cohomology modules under localization and completion, respectively. Secondly, some necessary and sufficient conditions for a local ring being a quotient of a Cohen-Macaulay local ring are given in term of the annihilator of all local cohomology modules under localization and completion.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring of dimension $d$. In this paper, we first show that some power of the cohomology annihilator annihilates the $(d+1)$-th Ext modules for all finitely generated modules when either $R$ admits a dualizing complex or $R$ is local. Next, we study the Jacobian ideal of affine algebras over a field and equicharacteristic complete local rings, and characterize the equidimensionality of the ring in terms of the singular locus and the closed subsets defined by the cohomology annihilator and the Jacobian ideal.

Abstract:Given any commutative Noetherian ring R and an element x in R, we consider the full subcategory of its singularity category consisting of objects for which the morphism that is given by the multiplication by x is zero. Our main observation is that we can establish a relation between and for any two ring elements x and y. Utilizing this observation, we obtain a decomposition of the singularity category and consequently an upper bound on the dimension of the singularity category.

Acyclic complexes of injectives and finitistic dimensions

Abstract:For a ring $A$, we consider the question whether every bounded above cochain complex of injective $A$-modules which is acyclic is null-homotopic. We show that if $A$ is left and right noetherian and has a dualizing complex, then this implies that the finitistic dimension of $A$ is finite. In the appendix, Nakamura and Thompson show that the opposite holds over any ring. Our results give several new necessary and sufficient conditions for a ring to have finite finitistic dimension in a very general setting. Applications include a generalization of a recent result of Rickard about relations between unbounded derived categories and finitistic dimension, as well as several new characterizations of noetherian rings which satisfy the Gorenstein symmetry conjecture.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian ring. Denote by $\operatorname{mod} R$ the category of finitely generated $R$-modules and by $\operatorname{D^b}(R)$ the bounded derived category of $\operatorname{mod} R$. In this paper, we first investigate localizations and annihilators of Verdier quotients of $\operatorname{D^b}(R)$. After that, we explore upper bounds for the dimension of the singularity category of $R$ and its (strong) generators. We extend a theorem of Liu to the case where $R$ is neither an isolated singularity nor even a local ring.

On the annihilator variety of a highest weight Harish-Chandra module

Abstract:Let $G$ be a Hermitian type Lie group with maximal compact subgroup $K$. Let $L(\lambda)$ be a highest weight Harish-Chandra module of $G$ with the infinitesimal character $\lambda$. By using some combinatorial algorithm, we obtain a description of the annihilator variety of $L(\lambda)$. As an application, when $L(\lambda)$ is unitarizable, we prove that the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of $L(\lambda)$ only depends on the value of $z=(\lambda,\beta^{\vee})$, where $\beta$ is the highest root.

On finiteness theorems for automorphic forms

Abstract:In this paper, for any Shimura datum $(G,\mathcal{D})$ satisfying reasonable conditions so that many interesting cases satisfy, we prove some finiteness theorems for any graded vector space consisting of automorphic forms on $\mathcal{D}$ of some weights over the graded ring of automorphic forms on $X$ with positive parallel weights. We also discuss the integral base ring which we can work on. To realize automorphic forms as global sections on some coherent sheaves on the minimal compactification, we use the notion of reflexive sheaves and higher Koecher principle due to Kai-Wen Lan. Further, we give a more finer version of finiteness results for Siegel modular forms by using only the results of Chai-Faltings.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring, and let $\mathfrak a$ be a proper ideal of $R$. Let $M$ be a non-zero finitely generated $R$-module with the finite projective dimension $p$. Also, let $N$ be a non-zero finitely generated $R$-module with $N\neq\mathfrak{a} N$, and assume that $c$ is the greatest non-negative integer with the property that $\operatorname{H}^i_{\mathfrak a}(N)$, the $i$-th local cohomology module of $N$ with respect to $\mathfrak a$, is non-zero. It is known that $\operatorname{H}^i_{\mathfrak a}(M, N)$, the $i$-th generalized local cohomology module of $M$ and $N$ with respect to $\mathfrak a$, is zero for all $i>p+c$. In this paper, we obtain the coassociated prime ideals of $\operatorname{H}^{p+c}_{\mathfrak a}(M, N)$. Using this, in the case when $R$ is a local ring and $c$ is equal to the dimension of $N$, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the vanishing of $\operatorname{H}^{p+c}_{\mathfrak a}(M, N)$ which extends the Lichtenbaum-Hartshorne vanishing theorem for generalized local cohomology modules.

Abstract:To each finitely presented module $M$ over a commutative ring $R$ one can associate an $R$-ideal $\mathrm{Fitt}_{R}(M)$, which is called the (zeroth) Fitting ideal of $M$ over $R$. This is of interest because it is always contained in the $R$-annihilator $\mathrm{Ann}_{R}(M)$ of $M$, but is often much easier to compute. This notion has recently been generalised to that of so-called `Fitting invariants' over certain noncommutative rings; the present author considered the case in which $R$ is an $\mathfrak{o}$-order $\Lambda$ in a finite dimensional separable algebra, where $\mathfrak{o}$ is an integrally closed commutative noetherian complete local domain. This article is a survey of known results and open problems in this context. In particular, we investigate the behaviour of Fitting invariants under direct sums. In the appendix, we present a new approach to Fitting invariants via Morita equivalence.

Abstract:We study $cd(M,N):=\sup\{j:H^j_{m}(M,N)\neq0\}$, and we prove the following over $AB$-rings: $cd(M,N)<\infty$ iff $cd(M, N)\leq2 dim R$. For locally free over the punctured spectrum, we present the better bound, namely $cd(M, N)<\infty$ iff $cd(M, N)\leq dim R,$ and show this is sharp for maximal Cohen-Macaulay, and prove that this detects freeness of $M$. We present some explicit examples to compute $cd(M, N)$. Now, suppose $R$ is only Cohen-Macaulay and of prime characteristic equipped with the Frobenius map $\varphi$. We show for some $n\gg 0$ that $cd(^{\varphi_n}R,M)<\infty$ iff $id_R(M)<\infty.$ This presents some criteria on regularity. Also, some vanishing results on $Ext^i_R(^{\varphi}R,-)$ are given, where $(-)\in\{R,^{\varphi}R\}$. We determine conditions under which the vanishing $Ext^i_R(^{\varphi}R,-)$ of restricted many $i$-th, implies the vanishing of all.

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a classical complex simple Lie algebra. Let $L(\lambda)$ be a highest weight module of $\mathfrak{g}$ with highest weight $\lambda-\rho$, where $\rho$ is half the sum of positive roots. The associated variety of the annihilator ideal of $L(\lambda)$ is called the annihilator variety of $L(\lambda)$.It is known that the annihilator variety of any highest weight module $L(\lambda)$ is the Zariski closure of a nilpotent orbit in $\mathfrak{g}^*$. But in general, this nilpotent orbit is not easy to describe for a given highest weight module $L(\lambda)$. In this paper, we will give some simple formulas to characterize this unique nilpotent orbit appearing in the annihilator variety of a highest weight module for classical Lie algebras. Our formulas are given by introducing two algorithms, i.e., bipartition algorithm and partition algorithm. To get a special or metaplectic special partition from a domino type partition, we define the H-algorithm based on the Robinson-Schensted insertion algorithm. By using this H-algorithm, we can easily determine this nilpotent orbit from the information of $\lambda$.

Abstract:We study homological behavior of modules satisfying the Auslander condition. Assume that $\mathcal{AC}$ is the class of left $R$-modules satisfying the Auslander condition. It is proved that each cycle of an exact complex with each term in $\mathcal{AC}$ belongs to $\mathcal{AC}$ for any ring $R$. As a consequence, we show that for any left Noetherian ring $R$, $\mathcal{AC}$ is a resolving subcategory of the category of left $R$-modules if and only if $_RR$ satisfies the Auslander condition if and only if each Gorenstein projective left $R$-module belongs to $\mathcal{AC}$. As an application, we prove that, for an Artinian algebra $R$ satisfying the Auslander condition, $R$ is Gorenstein if and only if $\mathcal{AC}$ coincides with the class of Gorenstein projective left $R$-modules if and only if $({\mathcal{AC}^{< \infty}},(\mathcal{AC}^{<\infty})^\bot)$ is a tilting-like cotorsion pair if and only if (${\mathcal{AC}^{< \infty}},\mathcal{I}$) is a tilting-like cotorsion pair, where $\mathcal{AC}^{<\infty}$ is the class of left $R$-modules with finite $\mathcal{AC}$-dimension and $\mathcal{I}$ is the class of injective left $R$-modules. This leads to some criteria for the validity of the Auslander and Reiten conjecture which says that an Artinian algebra satisfying the Auslander condition is Gorenstein.

Abstract:A theorem of Paul Roberts states that the integral closure of a regular local ring in a generically abelian extension is Cohen-Macaulay, provided the characteristic of the residue field does not divide the order of the Galois group. An example of Koh shows the conclusion is false in the modular case. After a modification to the statement concerning ramification over $p$ in codimension one, we give an extension of Roberts's theorem to the modular case for unramified regular local rings in mixed characteristic when the $p$-torsion of the Galois group is annihilated by $p$.
