Abstract:We prove that the integral closures of the powers of a squarefree monomial ideal I equal the symbolic powers if and only if I is the edge ideal of a Fulkersonian hypergraph.

Abstract:Combinatorial properties of some ideals related to strong quasi-n-partites graphs are examined. We prove that the edge ideal of a strong quasi-n-partite graph is not integrally closed and we give an expression for its integral closure. Moreover, we are able to determine the structure of the ideals of vertex covers for the edge ideals associated to a strong quasi-n-partite graph.

Abstract:Let $k$ be a field, let $A$ and $B$ be polynomial rings over $k$, and let $S= A \otimes_k B$. Let $I \subseteq A$ and $J \subseteq B$ be monomial ideals. We establish a binomial expansion for rational powers of $I+J \subseteq S$ in terms of those of $I$ and $J$. Particularly, for a positive rational number $u$, we prove that $(I+J)_u = \sum_{0 \le \omega \le u, \ \omega \in \mathbb{Q}} I_\omega J_{u-\omega},$ and that the sum on the right hand side is a finite sum. This finite sum can be made more precise using jumping numbers of rational powers of $I$ and $J$. We further give sufficient conditions for this formula to hold for the integral closures of powers of $I+J$ in terms of those of $I$ and $J$. Under these conditions, we provide explicit formulas for the depth and regularity of $\overline{(I+J)^k}$ in terms of those of powers of $I$ and $J$.

Abstract:We classify all unmixed monomial ideals I of codimension 2 which are generically a complete intersection and which have the property that the symbolic power algebra A(I) is standard graded. We give a lower bound for the highest degree of a generator of A(I) in the case that I is a modification of the vertex cover ideal of a bipartite graph, and show that this highest degree can be any given number. We furthermore give an upper bound for the highest degree of a generator of the integral closure of A(I) in the case that I is a monomial ideal which is generically a complete intersection.

Abstract:Let $I$ be a monomial ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring $R = k[x_1,...,x_r]$. In this paper we give an upper bound on $\overline{\dstab} (I)$ in terms of $r$ and the maximal generating degree $d(I)$ of $I$ such that $\depth R/\overline{I^n}$ is constant for all $n\geqslant \overline{\dstab}(I)$. As an application, we classify the class of monomial ideals $I$ such that $\overline{I^n}$ is Cohen-Macaulay for some integer $n\gg 0$.

Abstract:We investigate the rational powers of ideals. We find that in the case of monomial ideals, the canonical indexing leads to a characterization of the rational powers yielding that symbolic powers of squarefree monomial ideals are indeed rational powers themselves. Using the connection with symbolic powers techniques, we use splittings to show the convergence of depths and normalized Castelnuovo-Mumford regularities. We show the convergence of Stanley depths for rational powers, and as a consequence of this we show the before-now unknown convergence of Stanley depths of integral closure powers. In addition, we show the finiteness of asymptotic associated primes, and we find that the normalized lengths of local cohomology modules converge for rational powers, and hence for symbolic powers of squarefree monomial ideals.

Abstract:Let $J$ be any ideal in a strongly $F$-regular, diagonally $F$-split ring $R$ essentially of finite type over an $F$-finite field. We show that $J^{s+t} \subseteq \tau(J^{s - \epsilon}) \tau(J^{t-\epsilon})$ for all $s, t, \epsilon > 0$ for which the formula makes sense. We use this to show a number of novel containments between symbolic and ordinary powers of prime ideals in this setting, which includes all determinantal rings and a large class of toric rings in positive characteristic. In particular, we show that $P^{(2hn)} \subseteq P^n$ for all prime ideals $P$ of height $h$ in such rings.

Abstract:Let $G_\omega$ be an edge-weighted simple graph. In this paper, we give a complete characterization of the graph $G_\omega$ whose edge ideal $I(G_\omega)$ is integrally closed. We also show that if $G_\omega$ is an edge-weighted star graph, a path or a cycle, and $I(G_\omega)$ is integrally closed, then $I(G_\omega)$ is normal.

Abstract:In this article, we define two new versions of integral and Frobenius closures of ideals which incorporate an auxiliary ideal and a real parameter. These additional ingredients are common in adjusting old definitions of ideal closures in order to generalize them to pairs, with an eye towards further applications in algebraic geometry. In the case of tight closure, similar generalizations exist due to N. Hara and K.I. Yoshida, as well as A. Vraciu. We study their basic properties and give computationally effective calculations of the adjusted tight, Frobenius, and integral closures in the case of affine semigroup rings in terms of the convex geometry of the associated exponent sets.

Abstract:In this article, our aim is to extend the class of monomial ideals for which symbolic and ordinary powers coincide. This property has been characterized for the class of edge ideals of simple graphs, and in this article, we study a completely new class of monomial ideals associated to simple graphs, namely the class of generalized edge ideals. We give a complete description of the primary components associated to the minimal associated primes of these ideals. Using this description, and assuming some conditions on the relative weights, we completely characterize the equality of ordinary and symbolic powers of generalized edge ideals. After that, we also characterize generalized edge ideals of the 3-cycle for which this equality holds.

Abstract:We study the symbolic $F$-splitness of families of binomial edge ideals. We also study the strong $F$-regularity of the symbolic blowup algebras of families of binomial edge ideals. We make use of Fedder-like criteria and combinatorial properties of the graphs associated to the binomial edge ideals in order to approach the aforementioned scenarios.

Abstract:Given a square-free monomial ideal $I$, satisfying certain hypotheses, in a polynomial ring $R$ over a field $\mathbb{K}$, we compute the projective dimension of $I$. Specifically, we focus on the cases where the 1-skeleton of an associated hypergraph is either a string or a cycle. We investigate the impact on the projective dimension when higher dimensional edges are removed. We prove that the higher dimensional edge either has no effect on the projective dimension or the projective dimension only goes up by one with the extra higher dimensional edge.

Abstract:Let $R = \mathbb{K}[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$ be a polynomial ring over a field $\mathbb{K}$, and let $I \subseteq R$ be a monomial ideal of height $h$. We provide a formula for the multiplicity of the powers of $I$ when all the primary ideals of height $h$ in the irredundant minimal primary decomposition of $I$ are irreducible. This is a generalization of \cite[Theorem 1.1]{TV}. Furthermore, we present a formula for the multiplicity of powers of special powers of monomial ideals that satisfy the aforementioned conditions. Here, the $m$-th special power of a monomial ideal refers to the ideal generated by the $m$-th powers of all its minimal generators. Finally, we explicitly provide a formula for the multiplicity of powers of special powers of edge ideals in vertex-weighted oriented graphs using combinatorial properties.

Abstract:As a generalization of the ideals of star configurations of hypersurfaces, we consider the a-fold product ideal Ia(f m1 1 center dot center dot center dot f ms s ) when f1, ... , fs is a sequence of n-generic forms and 1 < a < m1 + center dot center dot center dot + ms. Firstly, we show that this ideal has complete intersection quotients when these forms are of the same degree and essentially linear. Then, we study its symbolic powers while focusing on the uni-form case with m1 = center dot center dot center dot = ms. For large a, we describe its resurgence and symbolic defect. And for general a, we also investigate the corre-sponding invariants for meeting-at-the-minimal-components version of symbolic powers.

Abstract:We introduce the class of sparse symmetric shifted monomial ideals. These ideals have linear quotients and their Betti numbers are computed. Using this, we prove that the symbolic powers of the generalized star configuration ideal are sequentially Cohen–Macaulay under some mild genericness assumption. With respect to these symbolic powers, we also consider the Harbourne–Huneke containment problem and establish the Demailly-like bound.

Abstract:Symbolic powers are studied in the combinatorial context of monomial ideals. When the ideals are generated by quadratic squarefree monomials, the generators of the symbolic powers are obstructions to vertex covering in the associated graph and its blowups. As a result, perfect graphs play an important role in the theory, dual to the role played by perfect graphs in the theory of secants of monomial ideals. We use Gröbner degenerations as a tool to reduce questions about symbolic powers of arbitrary ideals to the monomial case. Among the applications are a new, unified approach to the Gröbner bases of symbolic powers of determinantal and Pfaffian ideals.
